We Are Many 12a

Thu 17 Mar 6pm Followed by a Q&A with the Director Dir: Amir AmiraniUK 2015 110minsCast: Jeremy Corbyn, Susan Sarandon, Dr. Hans Blix, Richard Branson, Ken Loach

We Are Many tells the story of 15 February 2003, when over 30 million people in over 800 cities across the world marched in demonstration against the Iraq War. The documentary charts the events and discourse that led to the day of protest, the biggest global demonstration ever, with first person testimonies from activists and demonstrators, and contributions from many of the key leading political and cultural figures of the time.

An inspiring story about the power of modern communications which provided a template for many of the epoch-defining popular protests of the last decade.

Truth 15

Fri 18 – Thu 24 MarDir: James VanderbiltUS 2015 125minsCast: Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, Dennis Quaid, Elisabeth Moss, Topher Grace

James Vanderbilt’s (screenwriter of Zodiac, The Amazing Spiderman) directorial debut details the 2004 CBS 60 Minutes report investigating then-President George W. Bush’s draft-dodging military service, and the subsequent firestorm of criticism that cost anchor Dan Rather and producer Mary Mapes their careers.

Robert Redford is outstanding as Dan Rather, and Cate Blanchett rises to the challenge of portraying his nervy producer and confidante Mary Mapes with aplomb.

Truth is a thrilling piece of filmmaking about journalism and politics in the tawdry age of counter-messaging.

Hail, Caesar! 12a

Fri 18 – Mon 28 MarDir: Ethan Coen, Joel CoenUS 2016 106mins Cast: Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum

Set in 1950s Hollywood, the comedy follows a single day in the life of Eddie Mannix (Brolin), Head of Physical Production at Capitol Pictures. He is, however, more of a fixer; constantly putting out fires, soothing egos and solving problems for big names and stars in the industry. When Whitlock (Clooney), a dim-witted star of a cheesy Roman biblical epic is kidnapped and held for ransom, Mannix is faced with his largest problem to fix yet.

The Coen brothers (No Country for Old Men, The Big Lebowski) take on a comedy which poses serious questions about life and creative frustration.

Janis: Little Girl Blue 15

Thu 7 Apr 8.45pm Dir: Amy J. BergUS 2015 104minsCast: Cat Power, Janis Joplin, Peter Albin

Oscar-nominated documentarian Amy Berg examines the meteoric rise and untimely fall of one of the most revered and iconic rock ‘n’ roll singers of all time. Joplin’s life story is revealed for the first time on film through electrifying archival footage, reminiscent interviews with friends and family and rare personal letters, presenting an intimate and insightful portrait of a bright, complicated artist who changed music forever.

Marguerite 15

Fri 8 – Sun 10 AprDir: Xavier GiannoliFrance/Czech Republic/Belgium 2015 129minsCast: Catherine Frot, André Marcon, Michel Fau, Christa Théret

Paris, 1920s. Marguerite Dumont is a wealthy baroness who loves music, particularly opera, and adores performing for her dearest friends. However, her voice is actually jaw-droppingly awful, yet has remained blissfully unaware of this fact as both her friends and husband have kept her fantasy of her talent alive. The problem starts when she decides to perform to a real audience in Paris.

Loosely based on the true story of American socialite Florence Foster Jenkins, Catherine Frot (The Page Turner) gives a heartfelt and tender performance as the passionate and obsessive Marguerite.

The Ones Below is an engrossing take on interpersonal dynamics, making a persuasive argument on why, in London, you never seem to know your neighbours.

High-Rise 15 TBC

Fri 15 – Thu 21 AprDir: Ben WheatleyUK 2015 112minsCast: Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss

Ben Wheatley’s (Sightseers, Kill List) High-Rise is a dystopian new film based on J.G Ballard’s 1975 novel, an unrestrained and brilliant satire of both 1960s social idealism and the Thatcherite values that undermined it.

The film follows young, respectable doctor, Robert Laing (Hiddleston) who moves into a new luxury apartment in a concrete tower block. Inhabited by eccentric tenants who let off steam in endless rounds of themed parties, this insular society is managed by the high-rise’s architect Mr Royal (Irons), until everything begins to fall to pieces.

Screened at the 2015 London Film Festival where it was hailed as “close to being an instant classic” by the Evening Standard, Couple in a Hole follows a Scottish couple who fled to the French countryside after their previous home was destroyed by a wildfire.

John (Higgins – In the Loop) and Karen (Dickie – The Witch) develop a simple, almost feral existence in the woods: foraging for food, water and resources whilst staying away from close by villagers, until an encounter with a local farmer leads to a deadly climax.

A very entertaining low budget UK film that will leave you smiling.

Eddie the Eagle PG

Fri 22 – Thu 28 AprDir: Dexter FletcherUK 2016 100minsCast: Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman, Christopher Walken

British actor/director Dexter Fletcher (Sunshine on Leith) takes on the career of Michael “Eddie” Edwards, famously the first British ski-jumper to ever enter the Winter Olympics in Calgary 1988.

Taron Egerton (Testament of Youth) stars as Edwards, who in his Gloucestershire childhood fosters the seemingly unlikely goal of becoming an Olympic athlete, despite any obvious sporting skills. With sheer drive, ambition and perseverance he eventually employs a tough coach (Jackman) and manages to prove everyone wrong. A very British production about a very British hero – a film full of warmth and wit.

The Angelic Conversation PG

Sat 23 & Sun 24 AprDir: Derek JarmanUK 1985 81minsCast: Judi Dench, Paul Reynolds, Phillip WilliamsonSeven Shona Auerbach UK 1996 18mins

Before The Angelic Conversation, we will screen Seven, a short adaptaion of Shakespeare’s The Seven Ages of Man from a feminist perspective.

Derek Jarman’s The Angelic Conversation is the purest of the filmmaker’s experimental works – a lyrical visualization of the love sonnets of William Shakespeare. It is an ode to the sensuality and dark beauty of love. Judi Dench’s recitation of the poems are a lyrical visualisation of William Shakespeare’s love sonnets.

Glamour, art cinema and graceful ageingGinette Vincendeau considers the extraordinary career of Catherine Deneuve

Sat 5 Mar 11am – 3.30pm

From her early starring roles as blond ingénue in Jacques Demy’s 1960s musicals, Catherine Deneuve forged a unique career as the star of international art cinema. Now in her 70s, she shows no sign of slowing down, stepping gracefully into roles of strong, active older women, as in the recent successful art films Three Hearts and Standing Tall.

This illustrated presentation discusses the various incarnations of Catherine Deneuve and asks what the secret of such longevity on screen is.

It includes a screening of Elle s’en va (2013), directed by Emmanuelle Bercot (Polisse, Mon Roi).
