The philosophy behind our exclusive V-Lite concept is simple:

Creative combination of innovative materials and technologies in order toreduce weight, without compromising performance or comfort.

Our V-Lite collection spans all of our categories drawing from Hi-Tec’sheritage in creating innovative, lightweight footwear and sacrificing nothingin terms of comfort, stability and performance.

Each shoe in the V-Lite range is constructed using a vertical build systemthat surpasses the competition’s current technology and materialsapplication.

There are five main elements to the V-Lite Concept:

Contoured and made from a quality foam EVA, our footbeds aid instantcomfort through shock absorption points at the heel and forefoot. Eachfootbed has ventilation holes, allowing air to pass right through to keep thefoot cool and fresh. The footbeds also contain a moisture wicking liningwhich guarantees you cool, dry feet throughout prolonged use.

Lightweight leathers and synthetics, in conjunction with very light, yetdurable hardware, purposely deliver a lean and mean quality to our uppers.

The mid-sole is where most of the shock absorption takes place within ourfootwear. Made from Compression Moulded Ethel Vinyl Acetate (CMEVA) the V-Lite midsole not only weighs less than standard EVA, but is also lighter thanconventional CMEVA. All of our midsoles are contoured for good supportand fit.

Made from recycled plastics our multi density lasting board provides therigidity of a steel shank without the excess weight. Tortional rigidity isachieved via the denser rear area of the board while the front of the boardremains thinner to allow for the natural flex motion of the foot. The Stabila-Flex-Plus board is also contoured, this makes for a better fit and combatsany unwanted lateral movement of the foot within the footwear.

Tortional rigidity provides the wearer with the support required to preventankle ligament damage and pulling of the foot tendons. Such injuries canoccur when walking without ankle support on uneven surfaces found in thegreat outdoors, undulations on the Golf Course and when moving laterallyon the Court.

Outdoor V-Lite Sole Tennis V-Lite Sole Golf V-Lite Sole

Our low-profile, lightweight, carbon rubber outsoles fall under the MDT(Multi Directional Traction) family of outsoles. The lugs are angled to ensuregrip uphill, downhill and to allow mud to be ‘kicked out’ at the earliestopportunity maintaining maximum grip for as long as possible. The lowprofile alloy of carbon and rubber materials in the sole unit means the soleis both flexible, yet durable without the need for thick heavy lugs found intraditional outdoor footwear. In all categories the outsole uses minimumrubber in non-critical areas, which reduce the weight of the sole by up to 15%.

Our V-Lite tennis shoes contain a MDT herringbone tread suitable for all courtsurfaces.

In Golf we have a V-Lite sole unit that uses a high density CMEVA outsoleinstead of rubber to reduce weight without compromising performance. V-Lite Technical running shoes utilise a softer, lighter and more shockabsorbent rubber in the forefoot.

For 2 years Hi-Tec worked with SATRA® to examine the dynamics of the footin a variety of sporting contexts. The basis of the approach, utilising thelatest pressure mapping technology, was to assess and evaluate the high-pressure areas of the foot during the respective sporting movements.

The running / walking study has revealed that there are four critical phasesto the running gait. Heel strike, mid-foot stance, forefoot and toe off. Thenew insight here is the high pressure that is driven through the big toe andthe critical role that plays in balance, stability and forward propulsion.

From this advanced research Hi-Tec developed the 4:SYS concept to reflectthe different forces applied by the bare foot during the running gait.

Hi-Tec believe that if the footstrike wearing shoes could more closely reflectthat of the barefoot then that could yield some significant benefits to therunner.

This lead Hi-Tec to develop the 4:SYS midsole configuration which isintended to encourage the foot to function in a more natural way. The4:SYS midsole works by optimising the material used in the varioussections of the midsole, which in turn reflect the demands of the barefoot.8 grades of material have been moulded into the midsole - softest wherethe highest pressure is exerted, stiffer where support is required andenergy return materials in the forefoot and ‘toepulsion’ zone, where anelement of propulsion is required.

Hi-Tec 4:SYS technology has been designed to encourage the foot to returntowards the barefoot strike, subsequently delivering a more natural, morestable and more direct line transfer of energy during the running footstrike.

Independent research by Biomechanics experts Quintic Consultancy hasshown that channelling the energy through the 4:SYS midsole has enabledHi-Tec to create a shoe that delivers:

1. a faster foot strike (i.e. the foot is in contact with the ground for ashorter period of time) which by definition it gives the runner a moreenergy and time efficient stride.

2. a midsole that places less strain on the lower leg, which is essential in stabilising the foot during the footstrike.

Competitor products showed a lessefficient stride and more of a‘wobble’ during this energy transferwhich results in a more unstable, therefore less efficient stride.

The 4:SYS midsole directlychannels energy towards the centreof the heel seat region (A) thenencourages this energy through thecentre line axis line until toe off inthe most direct route possible (B).

Direct Centre Of Pressure (COP)

The COP line for the Hi-Tec Phtera and Silver Shadow X5 was 2.15% and2.3% respectively shorter than in the benchmark competitor shoes.

More direct COP line = footstrike 5 milliseconds shorter

Lower Leg Stability

The longer the COP line the more stabilising the lower limb has to endureduring each contact phase, therefore the closer the value can be to 100%the more efficient the running style will be.

V-Lite Phtera 105.34%

Silver Shadow X5 105.50%

Benchmark average 107.64%

High speed film taken during the filming has also shown that the lower legphysically has to work more to stabilise the foot the higher the COP value.

Lower COP value = Less strain on the lower leg

The CDT concept is simple, the technology is patented and it really works.Biomechanics Scientist Dr. Paul Hurrion uses the anology “You wouldn’tfire a canon from a canoe”. The proof, Padraig Harrington, instrumental inthe development of CDT Technology is hitting his driver an average of 17.5yards further. The CDT shoes provide you with added grip and torsion whichgives you the confidence to swing the club with a faster head speed andtherefore impacting the ball with more energy, equating to longer distance.

No single technology in the shoe can be credited in gaining the extrapower, control and distance, rather the creative combination ofcomponents that result in the worlds first game improvement golf shoe. The key components that contribute are:

The Launch Pad Outsole

The CDT Cleat

88% of players improved theconsistency and accuracy of theirshots using a 5 iron during testingin the CDT Power shoes.

100% of golfers using CDT Powershoes said they were hitting theball further during testing.

Since changing into the CDT Powershoes Padraig Harrington’s ballspeed has risen from 166mph -173mph.

Top level badminton and squash are amongst the most physicallydemanding of sports. In both, the ability to decelerate and stop, changedirection and move again in a split second is critical.

Working with biomechanical experts Quintic Consultancy and our worldchampion squash and badminton stars, Hi-Tec has spent over two yearsredefining the meaning of performance footwear. The result is three uniquetechnologies grounded in science and logic which combine to deliver youprovably more cushioning, control, stability and grip.

Movement in badminton is much more vertical/overhead, morereactionary and the forces, up to 6X bodyweight, are also greater thansquash. Players are also on their front foot more often. The ‘stance ofreadiness’ in badminton is a good example.

The images show the Hi-Tec 4:SYSbadminton shoe and two competitorsshoes tested by World Champion NathanRobertson.

4:SYS IN ACTIONThe Hi-Tec shoe clearly shows thepressure distribution is more evenlyspread than either competitor A or B.

PEAK FORCE IN ACTIONThe red marker shows the point of PeakForce through the waist. It is this pointthat the shot is played. The Hi-Tec S:SYSshoe clearly shows the foot is supportedunder the point of Peak Force, thismeans:Greater Surface contact = better gripMore even spread of pressure = morestability

Testing has proven that Hi-Tec 4:SYSshoes are the world’s best performancesquash and badminton shoes. FACT.

As such the 4:SYS badminton shoe is designed to work with the dynamicnature of the game at any given moment. Due to the speed with whichbadminton is played, the ability to decelerate, stop and change direction iscurcial. These movements can be split into three categories, stoppingwhen:

• Moving away from the net

• Moving sideways across the net

• Moving towards the net

The most common way all players stop anddecelerate efficiently is by performing a lunge.Due to the short distances, high impact forces must be accepted quickly and efficiently toprevent injury.

With players looking to dominate the ‘T’, movement in squash is moreroutine based. Lunging is predominant, generally with a shallower angleand lower force than badminton. Squash players can still reach 4 - 5 Xbodyweight and as a result the shoe has a wider footprint and extendedforefoot energy return element. Lateral support is also considered toprovide a more stable platform.

As with badminton the speed at which squashis played means the ability to decelerate andchange direction is crucial. These movementscan be split into three categories, stoppingwhen:

• Moving towards the rear wall

• Moving sideways across the court

• Moving towards the front wall

The most common way players stop and decelerate efficiently is byperforming a lunge. Due to the short distances, high impact forces must beaccepted quickly and efficiently to prevent injury.

• This controlled decelleration leads to an averagereduction of force of 195.6n or 35%

• Therefore 4:SYS reduces the transfer of energyfrom heel strike to when the shot is played

• Loading rates are a key predictor to injury potential

Hi-Tec’s Impact Zone helps to control andstabilise your landing. How? Simply itdelivers the cushioning and support youneed at the critical position of impacttowards the rear of your heel.

The impact forces experienced during agame are huge and what’s more thecontact anglesduring a lunge, comparedto running, are also extreme. Combinedthese angles forcus huge force throughthe back rear of the heel.Hi-Tec’s ImpactZone compound has been uniquelydeveloped to deal with these forces inthis specific location. Whilst the positionof the Impact Zone is critical it is also howit combines with the 4:SYS midsoletechnology that helps to attenuate forcesduring your lunge.

Your footwork during a rally is dynamicand constantly changing. Your footwearneeds to react to every movement. 4:SYStechnology is the culmination of 3 yearsresearch and testing into the dynamics ofmovement. It delivers more support, stability and control by increasing thetime from heel contact to shot. This inturn reduces the transfer of energyduring your footstrike. Each 4:SYS shoeadopts 5 different densities in sevenlocations to deliver more control andstability. It does not isolate pressurezones into 2 areaslike some traditionalshoes but works holistically. Shockabsorbing materials are located in zones1 & 2 to control and stabilise your lungeand landing. Energy return materials arelocated in zones 3 and 4 to provide liftafter the shot is played.

Our research with Quintic Consultancyhas identified that the highest moment ofmaximum force or Peak Force alsocoincides with the moment you play yourshot. Crucially the location of this point ofPeak Force is through the waist of theshoe. Therefore to provide the best grip, support and control at the criticalmoment the shoe needs to be flatthrough its waist or middle.

During our research we found that allcourt shoes suffered from slip - up to30mm on average. When this occurs thebody has to work harder to stabilise. Thisleads to reduced efficiency and anincrease in the probability of injury.

The Peak Force outsole provides up to 6times better grip than other leadingfootwear.

eVENT® waterproof technology provides maximum comfort for activity inharsh environments and keeps footwear DRY INSIDE™ by ventingperspiration vapour through millions of unimpeded microscopic poresengineered into a durable waterproof membrane.

Other breathable fabrics function by an indirect and slow process ofabsorption and evaporation. They contain a solid barrier of polyurethanethat inhibits the passage of perspiration vapour.

Only eVENT® technology offers Direct Venting™. There are microscopicvents engineered into the fabric, which allow unhindered passage ofperspiration vapour. This avoids the moisture retention and breathabilityinhibiting effects of polyurethane, and noticeably reduces theuncomfortable build up of moisture in the microclimate between the bodyand the eVENT® membrane.

Conventional Waterproof Membrane

eVENT® Waterproof Membrane

Conventional waterproof“breathable” fabrics try to movemoisture through a solid barrier, usually polyurethane. Though theamount of perspiration that escapesthe fabric can be measured in alaboratory, its benefit is seldomnoticed during actual use.

Sympatex® is unique. Unlike other waterproof membranes, it is a non-porous material providing high moisture transmission which allows yourfeet to breathe whilst still remaining dry. Sympatex® is also resistant toclogging from dirt and oils, so moisture transmission can continue despiteharsh external outdoor environments.

It has 2 componets (a co-polymer) Polyester and Polyether. Polyesterrejects water (Hydrophobic), Polyether attacts water (Hydrophilic). Thiscomposition allows water vapour to be pulled through the membranewithout it needing holes (an Intelligent Hydrophilic Membrane).

Conventional Waterproof MembraneMicroscopic holes in the membrane are too small for water droplets topass through from the outside, but are large enough to allow water vapourthrough from the inside.

Sympatex® Waterproof MembraneSympatex® offers a complete barrier against the elements. The watervapour is pulled through the membrane on a molecular level – thereforeno need for holes. This is known as an Intelligent Hydrophilic Membrane.

Due to the increased technical nature of our products the level of testingand quality control has become a highly sophisticated and crucial elementof the footwear production process no more so than with waterprooftesting.

Waterproof TestingThe following tests are carried out to ensure that all Hi-Tec productsintended to be waterproof are indeed waterproof. The footwear isengineered to be waterproof from its very inception and tested throughoutthe development process. Waterproof tests are performed on the entireshoe/boot as well as all components.

The following methods are used:

Flex Testing Machine

Footwear is tested semi-submerged in water to the equivalent of 26 miles(14 hours) of walking to ensure that it does not leak through prolonged use.

Seam Sealing TestThese methods test the seam of the Waterproof membrane to ensure theyare sealed correctly. They use pressure to check the quality of the seal.

Tension TestThis measures the tensilestrength of the waterproofmembrane.

It can also measure theinherent strength of uppermaterials and the attachmentstrength of eyelets and otherhardware.

Water Vapour PermeabilityThis machine simulates foottemperatures and humidity, testing the ability of the uppermaterials or waterproofmembrane to absorbmoisture and the ability ofthese materials to allowmoisture vapour to passthrough (to breathe).

Abrasion TestThis machine is used todetermine the abrasionresistance of all types of fabricsused in our footwear.

Quarter and Back Height

The height of the top-line of a shoe at the back and at the quarters affect fitand comfort. If the back height is too low heel slip may occur during walking. If the quarters, particularly the outside quarter, are too high the top-line mayrub the ankle bone. To carry out measurements the gauge is placed inside ashoe on the insole at the seat. It is a simple but accurate device and is usedin routine fit assessment work by Hi-Tec technical personnel.

Internal Shoe Size Gauge

This simple and easy to use device is used in combination with our standardfitting routines to determine the size of footwear. The flat bar is inserted inthe shoe and pushed into the toe. The slider is then moved along the scaleuntil the curved bar touches the heel. The longest length can be found bymoving the device vertically and locating the curved bar to the point ofmaximum heel curvature . At this point the size of the footwear can be readoff the scale.

During mass production the footwear materials are tested by factory qualitycontrol personnel to ensure the product meets quality standards. Checksare carried out at different stages of manufacture and on differentcomponents as follows:

1. Materials when the materials first enter the factory in their raw state

2. Pressing after the sole materials are pressed from the moulds

3. Cutting after the upper materials are cut from the material rolls

4. Stitching following stitching of the uppers

5. Stock fitting checks on sole bonding are carried out

6. Assembly Whole shoe tests are completed e.g. waterproof testing

Following this process each pair of footwear that comes off the productionline is given a final quality check.

The Last is an abstract copy of the human foot in asolid form. One of its functions is to take theplace of the human foot in the productionphase as a working surface on whichflat leather components &synthetic uppers can begiven shape.

The footwear lasts provide the foundation for the precise form and fit of Hi-Tec footwear. These hunks of plastic, cast in the shape of feet, equipeach boot and shoe with the ability to support the foot, also anticipatinghow the foot flexes and changes shape when in motion. Together with theupper's design and materials, Hi-Tec lasts have determined the fit, feel, andperformance of footwear since our first shoe back in 1974.

Each Hi-Tec last is designed with the function of the footwear in mind withconsideration made to offer a comfortable fit to suit.

What do we mean by waterproof? When our footwear is described as waterproof it means that it has beenseam seal treated or has a membrane within it that will not allow the waterto pass through.

What is Breathability?Breathability is not about the ability of a fabric to allow perspiration (ormoisture) vapour to pass through it. Materials with good breathability allowthe foot to keep cool and dry.

How do fabrics breathe? When we perspire, moisture vapour escapes from our skin. It turns to aliquid when it condenses and this can be seen as beads of sweat on theskin. A fabric will breathe if it does not impede the movement of thismoisture vapour. Waterproof membranes prevent ingress of water from theenvironment, whilst allowing moisture vapour from inside the footwear toescape. There are two different structures of breathable membranes:Porous (with pores/holes) i.e Tecproof and Non-Porous (withoutpores/holes) i.e Sympatex.

CleaningDirt is best removed when dry and brushed off. Use a damp cloth/spongeusing clear water to remove only the most stubborn dirt.

DryingNever dry footwear using a direct heat source. If footwear is very wet thenuse paper pushed inside to speed up the drying process and to keep theinside shape of the boots/shoes. Let footwear dry naturally.

Applying WaxApply wax to seams of new footwear. Leather, when new, has a smoothfactory finish and will not accept treatment until it is scuffed or showssigns of wear. Be careful to treat fabric or leather with the correct productas recommended by your retailer.

Suede and Nubuck LeatherUse a brush to restore the nap but avoid hard brushing as this may give ashabby look. Treat with a cleaner or conditioner available from mostretailers. After prolonged use nubuck and suede can become dry, brittleand cracked. The conditioner will help stop this happening in the firstplace and help replenish moisture and rejuvenate as well as offering waterand dirt repellency.

Fabric UppersFabric Uppers are generally not waterproof unless they have a lining suchas Sympatex® or Tecproof®. Their performance can be further enhanced byensuring the outer fabric is water repellent. The outer can be treated torepel water on both lined and unlined models. This may possibly darkenthe colours. When waterproofing footwear always use a product with a lowoil content, this will not break down or clog the membrane causingreduced breathability.

Shoe DeodorantCertain deodorants contain an anti-bactericide, which effectively destroysthe bacteria that causes odour. Sprayed into footwear after prolonged usewill leave them smelling fresh ready for the next activity.
