Leon looked at the invitation cards with a broad grin. He had made them from
pieces of thick green paper and decorated them with ribbons. He had also used up a whole
bottle of glitter.
"They are so shiny that they make my eyes hurt," his sister said jokingly.
Leon pulled a piece of paper out of his school bag. It was a list of names of every
child in his class. There were thirty-nine of them, but he could invite only ten children to
his birthday party. He put a tick against Bobby's name. He had often helped Leon with his
homework. Then, he put a cross against Sheila's name. She liked to taunt and sometimes
bullied the younger pupils in school.
After a while, Leon realised he had a problem. Apart from Sheila, he wanted to
invite everyone to the party. If Shelia stopped teasing him and others, he would invite her
too. Eventually, Leon told his mother he did not want a party. He did not want any of his
friends to feel disappointed.
