Welcome from your chairmanFirst of all, let me wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year and then, welcome to a possible newvenue for our monthly meetings. I hope you have enjoyed the festive season, eaten too much, drunk justenough and celebrated with family and friends. The “Sales” have been with us throughout although, as I amwriting this, the January Sales have yet to begin.

I hope you are all impressed with the Mansfield Town FC functionsuite: considerably bigger than the Oakham Suite with room forMansfield U3A to grow, plenty of parking for all and cheaper to hire. The committee and I hope you will pass on your thoughts to usabout the venue and a suggestion box is available for you. Pleasebear in mind that venues of this size and quality are few and farbetween in our area. I have been involved with the committee forsome years and the subject of moving to other premises has beendiscussed many times. I hope you will endorse your committee’sdecision to try this venue out for possible adoption as I feel it ticks allthe right boxes. Please think hard about any change.

Today, instead of a speaker, we have our members’ day for theentertainment. Norma Smith has worked hard to put theprogramme together in the face of a few negative responses fromsome members and their groups. U3As will only work with positiveresponses from the members and I hope those concerned willreflect on that in the future. Today, we can look forward to some ofour members presenting their activities, so sit back and enjoy.

In some ways, 2016 will be a challenging year for Mansfield U3A.We still have some issues with our web page, newsletter and otherIT, but I would like to thank Terry Whitehead, Linda Leivers and MikeAllen for taking on the extra work to keep things running smoothly, so well that most of us have not noticedthe excellent job they have been doing. David Ling is still the Web Master and keeping an eye on what wedo, so thank you for that, David.

Some of the committee will have to stand down at the AGM, so please consider taking a more active role inthe running of our U3A and stand for election.___________________________________________________________________________________

Words from the Editor

Welcome to the first Newsletter of 2016. After all the celebrations of Christmas and the NewYear, we can go look ahead to another active year in our U3A.

Today, you have your first sight of a possible new venue – the 1861 Suite at Mansfield TownFootball Ground. Enjoy your visit, and have a thoughtful look round as we shall be asking youropinion of the venue. The Committee is not going to change the meeting place just for the sakeof it, but we are having to consider matters such as cost, room size, equipment, amenities andconvenience, not just for now, but for the future.

In the past, we've had to turn away potential members because we could not seat them at ourmeetings. This has meant we have lost good members who have benefitted other U3As and notMansfield! Perhaps the time has come now to consider what is right for us and to think how wecan develop over the next few years. Many of us are getting older and, rightly, are seeking totake a 'back seat' in the running of the U3A, but we cannot do this unless we open up themembership list to new, younger members.

We will have to think carefully about the implications, but please think about the future of ourU3A when you give your opinion.

Mike Allen

Forest Town & District U3A

Our esteemed editor has asked me to “write a few words about this latest U3A and make itamusing!” So here goes.

The launch meeting on September 3rd saw a packed St Albans church with most people havingno prior knowledge of the U3A movement. With the guidance of the County development teammanager, a steering committee was formed and it was under way. At the actual inauguralmeeting a month later, 103 people enrolled as members. Their enthusiasm was obvious as theylined up and indicated their intention to join the 8 or so interest groups which it is hoped will getunderway in the near future.

As a Forest Town resident of some 29 years, I have also joined this new U3A and, although youknow Mansfield U3A is my pride and joy within the U3A movement, there could well come a daywhen I can no longer drive and would find it difficult to get to our meetings. St Albans church is within yards of my home.

My contingency plan for my increasing decrepitude is to form a U3A Hell’s Angels chapterinvolving a fleet of mobility scooters. These will be all black with chrome fittings and multiplewing mirrors. Black leather outfits will be worn at all meetings but tattoos or body piercings willnot be accepted. This U3A group will be the first of its kind within the county and possibly withinthe country. It will be co-led by me and a gentleman member of Sherwood U3A who wishes toremain anonymous at this stage.

Please let me know if you are interested in joining us!

A Concert for ChristmasOn Sunday December 13th 2015, the U3A Choir and Bellisima Ladies Choir joined together in aChristmas performance at St Albans Church, Forest Town. The Church was decked with holly and ivyon all the pillars and a Christmas tree decorated with baubles and lights (and, of course, a fairy on top)by the pulpit.

The concert began with Bellisima singing the aptly named 'Ring, Ring! We are the Carol Singers' andcontinued with the Christmas blessing and a nativity carol. Their choir mistress, Suzy Fell, then sang'Star Candles'. The U3A choir was next, singing 'Star Carol', 'Torches' and then 'Gaudete' which wasaccompanied by the beating of a drum and tambour.

All the singing wasaccompanied by JohnSellars on the electronicpiano and he went on toplay a solo, 'Sleigh Ride',at a lively pace, which goteveryone’s feet tapping.

Grace Mellor, fromBellisima sang 'Sweet LittleJesus Boy', a lovely, traditional spiritual, andthen the whole ensemble, together with the audience, sang 'The First Noel'. Bellisima performed threemore songs, including '12 or So Days of Christmas', an amusing version of the usual rendition. RachelBarry, U3A’s new choir leader, sang 'The Little Road to Bethlehem' followed by Sharon Nicholls ofBellisima with 'Mary’s Boy Child'. The U3A choir sang three more songs, one being 'Saviour’s Day'. Weall sang 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing' and I’m sure any passers-by would agree it was quiteimpressive. Well done audience! Finally, both choirs sang the uplifting 'It’s the Most Wonderful Time ofthe Year'.

Once the concert had finished, most of the capacity audience stayed to eat mince pies and othergoodies, and partake of a drop of wine, tea or fruit juice. It was during this time we were pleased to hearhow much they had enjoyed the concert. Indeed, many of them said it was the starting point of theirChristmas celebrations. Our thanks go to all at St Albans Church, especially the ladies who cater with asmile on their faces.

Antiques and Collectables Group2015 has been another interesting year for the group. We had nine meetings with differenttopics throughout the year and in July, some of us ventured to part of the Antiques Quarter inSheffield. The subjects for our meetings varied from Art Deco and jewellery to Kitchenaliaand items made from bone, ivory or Bakelite. In November, we looked at teapots and, asone member said, “I didn’t know they could be so interesting.”

We were presented with teapots made from pottery, silver, pewter and cast iron. Then we had achild’s tea set, an advertising pot with two spouts and various shaped pots including a racing car, sewing machine and a post box. One item was too fragile to bring but we were shown aphotograph of it when it had appeared on the Antiques Roadshow in 2008.

We also learned that the first purpose-built teapots were made during the Ming dynasty in the1500s. At first, the tea was drunk straight from the teapot’s spout.

Our December meeting was fun because the subject was ‘Toys and Games’. We really had a tripdown Memory Lane with well-loved dolls, board games of various types, a bagatelle, Subbuteofrom the 1970s and a beautiful chess set with a leather board. A child’s Hoover washing machinewas produced complete with a mangle, a John Bull printing set together with Dinky toys and ragbooks. It really is amazing what comes out of the bags and boxes each month!

I look forward to seeing what the group can produce in 2016 when we begin with medals, badges and certificates in January. Pat Blackwell

The Teapot That TravelledOne of the teapots at the meeting that Pat has written about came from Jean Smethan’s familywho were ironfounders in the Chesterfield area, an item interesting in spite of the fact that it wasnot silver, but a Georgian-style silver plate teapot marked Finders of Sheffield on the bottom.

This teapot had been passed down the femaleline of the family, eventually arriving in 'AuntJean’s' possession in Ndola, Zambia – part ofthe Copper Belt – where her husband was anaccountant and where it was used every day.The story becomes tragic here as the housewas broken into by a gang of robbers andmuch silver, including the teapot, was stolen. The husband fought the gang off with arevolver, but Aunt Jean was so injured(“scalped” says Jean) that she died shortlyafterwards.

Weeks later, the teapot was discovered by a gardener in the bushes surrounding the house, intact but scratched where it had slid on the concrete. It was then brought to England by heruncle and passed on down the female line to Jean Smethan. Upon his death, she inherited ashare in the house, still unsold and inhabited by the housekeeper, together with an urncontaining his ashes!

The teapot has travelled from Chesterfield to Zambia and back, pouring tea elegantly under theAfrican sun, the centre piece of a violent robbery and of death.

Horse Riding GroupThe inaugural meeting of the Horse Riding Group was held on 6th November at KirkfieldEquestrian Centre, Blidworth Bottoms. The group was the idea of Christine Smith, another ofour new members who is happy to take an active role in our U3A. And what a great morningwe had!

Most of the group had little or, in my case, no experience of horse riding, but we needn’t haveworried. Hats and boots where necessary were provided, all the H & S forms completed and wethen mounted our horses. So much to learn, but at the end of our session we all knew about thereins, mounting and dismounting, rider position, how to stop and start and even managed to trotand canter and turn to the left and the right.

I will always remember the headlights and thrusting positions. What an excellent teacher, whatfun! Can’t wait for the next session, why didn’t I try this before?Avril McGee

The Editor hopes to include action photos of our intrepid riders in a future Newsletter! In the meantime, sign up to this potential new group by phoning Christine Smith, the GroupLeader, on 07859 249086 or email her at [email protected]. The cost is £12 for a half hourlesson or £22 for a full hour at Kirkfield Equestrian Centre.

Read a Little AloudAt our December meeting, we read appropriate Christmas-time pieces, but also a couple ofsurprises. November's extracts were also seasonal, telling a story about Christmas presentsfollowed by a Joyce Grenfell poem about shopping and its trials, but then her realisation of whatthe celebration really means. After our tea break, we all had our tales to tell about gifts we haveloved or hated.

We have space for a few more to join our very happy band. The reading matter is provided. Eachof us reads a couple of paragraphs or so and finds the choices interesting, but it is the sharing ofour own experiences that gives us the greatest pleasure. Give us a try!

Ring Sheila Haslam on 01623 627764 or email [email protected] for more information.

The Luncheon ClubThe Luncheon Club went to Launays at Edwinstowe on the 10th December for the monthly meetingof food lovers. The food as usual was fabulous and the mix of French and traditional Christmasfayre was enjoyed by all.

The Final Cut

I could have scored the winner, but when Kev crossed the ball to me, all I could think of was mehair. If I'd have headed it, it would have played havoc with me new barnet. I'd paid 200 quid atAlonso's for the cut and an extra £160 quid for the colour highlights. And because I was going outon the pull later, there was no way I was heading that ball.

Well, to hear me mates on the team, I'd done something worse than murder. Flipping heck, all I did waspoint me head in the opposite direction and there was uproar. Jimmy Jones didn't half give me some stick,he said I should be suspended with no pay.

So I was summoned to see the boss in his new posh office – he's nicknamed “the Fuhrer”. I don't knowwhat it means, but he can't half shout when he's mad at you. He's got this funny little ‘tash and it don't donothing for his looks. Well, I was a bit scared, I thought:, “He can stop me money if he wants - it was only aflipping goal I missed, he don't know I did it on purpose.” Sitting waiting to see the boss was worse thanhaving me bits waxed I’ve decided. The longer he kept me waiting, the more nervous I got.

Crikey, he didn’t half give me a rollicking. The boss asked me what state the country would be in if DavidCameron turned his head away every time he was under pressure. I said I didn't know who he played for,but if he had paid 360 quid for a new hairdo, he might think twice.

I knew as soon as I’d said it, I should have kept me big mouth shut. He called me some names, I thinkone of them meant my mum and dad weren’t married. I told him he didn’t ought to get so wound up and Isuggested he should think about getting a new haircut - it might stop people giving him funny nicknamesand his secretary might be a bit more obliging if he looked more modern.

I think I went a bit too far. He dictated a letter to the Chairman into one of those recording machines. Hesaid something about it being the final straw – well I thought that was what he said last time when I didn’tturn up for training ‘cos I was with this model. I heard him saying that he wanted me on the transfer list.Well, I've got a lot of tattoos an' I haven’t got any room for transfers – I told him that.Yvonne Kennison Mansfield U3A Writing for Pleasure Group

Dust If You Must by Rose Millligan

Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be betterTo paint a picture or write a letter,Bake a cake or plant a seed, Ponder the difference between 'want' and 'need'?

Dust if you must, but there's not much time,With rivers to swim and mountains to climb,Music to hear, and books to read,Friends to cherish, and life to lead.

Dust if you must. But the world's out thereWith the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair,A flurry of snow, a shower of rain,This day will not come round again

Dust if you must, but bear in mind,Old age will come, and it's sometimes not kind. And when you go, and go you must,You, yourself, will make more dust.

Remember, a house becomes a home when you can write 'I love you' in the dust on the furniture
