Welcome from your chairmanWELCOME to our May meeting, the start of summer? Let’s hope so but don’t forget theold adage: - “Don’t Cast A Clout Until May Is Out.” Some of our U3A have already startedthe holiday season with a river cruise; to all accounts they had a great time. I find it inter-esting the variety of holidays available to all, but perhaps one type features less in ourthird age: beach holidays; lying there all day to achieve the best tan possible.

By the time you read this welcome our Coffee Morning will have taken place on May 8th,hopefully a great success as a reward for all the hard work staging the event and as ahelp towards our fees. Thanks to all who contributed with prizes and help with the stallsetc.

After the General Election, in which I hope we all voted on May 7th, we may have a newgovernment; just as long as they leave well alone with retired people I will be quite happy.Hopefully Mansfield has a new Mayor too – one that will work hard to make Mansfield abetter place for all of its citizens.

Group activity is going well, thanks to all group leaders and Linda Leivers our group co-ordinator. David Ling, our Newsletter Editor, has had to revamp the centre pages toaccommodate the new groups; thanks David. This is what the U3A is all about learningand enjoyment in our Third Age.

One of the pleasures of retirement is having the time to attend festivities of many types. Iwas fortunate enough to be at Cromford Meadows, near Matlock, for the Junior RugbyUnion Football Festival organised by Matlock R.U.F.C. The teams were from as far asNuneaton, Ashby, Nottingham and Dronfield, to name but a few. There were teams ofboys and girls with ages ranging from 7 years to 14 years. Ninety-six teams in all, a totalof 800 to 850 players. Rugby coaches, referees, mums, dads, grans and granddads.

For four hours these youngsters played rugby, gave their all, respected the referee andthe opposing team. On a beautiful sunny day it proved to me that there are a lot of greatyoungsters out there, good to know, not causing trouble, polite and respectful to theirelders and opponents. Great!Bob Longden

Recent EventsHolidays Group Cruising on the DanubeTHE TWO days of travel to get to our destination didnot go according to plan because the bus brokedown on the second day and it took longer that itshould have done to get a replacement as driversdidn’t want to work on a Sunday.

Eventually a super German bus arrived and westocked up with mini bottles of wine off our old busand soldiered on and eventually we reached ourboat, which was named ‘Serenity’.

The cabins were comfortable and soon we wereeating our first meal, which cheered us all up as it

was very well presented with plenty of choices and the waiters at our tables were very nice and thesame ones looked after us every day.

Cruising down the river was so peaceful that wehardly knew we were moving except when we wentthrough one of the huge locks.

Every day a private coach was waiting on the dock totake us to various places of interest with local guidesto accompany us. We now know all about thehundreds of years of what became the huge Austro-Hungarian Empire.

We also found out that the Danube often floods andcauses chaos along its length and that most of thecities and towns we visited have Plague Columns;these are sometimes gruesome monuments tocelebrate the ending of the last Black Death epidemicin the 17th century.

The weather was wonderful, sunny and warm every day while we visited Melk, Vienna and thenBudapest, both Buda and Pest. That evening we went to a traditional folklore show where the wineflowed freely and we all got rather merry.

Some of the highlights of the next few days were avisit to a stud farm where, in beautiful sunshine andafter a drink we watched a horse riding show.

The next day we visited Bratislava, the capital of Slov-akia. Some of us climbed 89 steps to the top of theclock tower, where we had a view of one of the bestpreserved and picturesque old towns I have seen.

The weather turned a lot colder on the day we visitedDurnstein, another pretty little town where we had awine tasting, which warmed us up a bit. In thedistance, we could see the ruins of the castle whereRichard The Lionheart was imprisoned.

Danube Cruise; cont. from page 4 …On the last evening we enjoyed ‘The Captain’sDinner’; there were 7 courses but thankfully somewere very small portions. During dinner we all had ashock when another boat bumped into us and madeus jump; no damage was done, luckily.

River cruising is such an easy way to see so manywonderful places in one week. Thank you MargaretBurlinson for organising such an interesting holiday. Joy CroweWith thanks to Joy Crowe for the cover photo, to IanBlackwell for page 3, and to Nick Crowe and SheilaWhalley for 4 and 9. There are many more on the website.

Art AppreciationSADLY, we have had to postpone the special event at The Towers on May 22nd as our guestspeaker, Olwyn Hughes, has to have a course of hospital treatment over the next few weeks. She ishowever hopeful that after treatment she will be able to come to Mansfield and she has asked thatwe consider re-scheduling the event for a date later in the summer when she is fully recovered. Pauline Boucher (01623 644798, [email protected])

ArtOUR APRIL meeting was smaller than usual as some members were unable to attend for variousgood reasons combined with others away enjoying the U3A's Rhine Cruise. The session was a verypleasant and enjoyable one and one member managed to get their painting finished within themeeting time. That must be a first! The subject was 'Aspects of Insects'.

Books on the subject or prints from the web were used as a reference and our mentor, Michaeldemonstrated his detailed knowledge of the subject as well as the technique.

The next meeting is on May 20th when the subject is 'Springtime'. Gordon Howlett (01623 627423, [email protected])

Digital WorldHIGHLIGHTS of our April meetings were discussions about cropping photos on the computer toimprove their composition and options when moving from 35mm film photography to digital.

Meetings are at the far end of the bar at the Foxglove in Forest Town, opposite ASDA, on any 2ndor 4th Friday (2.00 - 4.00). They are free and refreshments are available from the bar so just comealong and ask or show us whatever you want. But do please bring your camera and some photoson a memory card, stick or CD.David Ling (01623 822994, [email protected])

Craft WorkshopEIGHT members gathered for a preliminary meeting on March 25th. Information was gatheredregarding members' previous experience and suggestions made for themes for future meetings. Alist of crafts that members would like to explore was compiled.

Our next meeting will be at my home on May 27th, when we'll be discussing feltwork. Please let meknow if you'd like to join us.Ruth Colley (01623 472010, [email protected])

First AidTHE NEW First Aid group followed a number of group meetings where members have been takenill or had an accident so we as a U3A would be failing in our duty of care if we ignored this.

British Red Cross provide free training for specific groups and the 'elderly' are one such category (Ithink we qualify). The U3A Committee has agreed to fund payment to cover the cost of the venue. The training is not standardised as it is customised by the trainer to meet the fears and concerns ofthose who attend, be it broken limbs, fainting or fits.

The first trial session has been arranged for Wednesday July 15th at Stanton Hill Baptist Church,Albert Street, Stanton Hill, NG17 3GF from 2.00 to 4.00pm and I hope there'll be more later.

Please support this as it may be you who needs help one day!Linda Leivers (01623 471963, [email protected])

Theatre Visits sees OklahomaWOW what a show; wonderful catchy tunes, good voices, great dance routines, professional sets, there was humour and romance. Gary Wilmot made us laugh sometimes with just a facial expres-sion; the whole cast was top notch. A live orchestra played the music that set our feet tapping; avery enjoyable show. I could watch it all again.Sheila Whalley (01623 453908, [email protected])

Pudding ClubARE YOU interested in baking (and sampling the results)? We are now able to welcome 2 moremembers to the Pudding Club; membership being limited to 12 to fit the table. We meet at 4-6pm onthe first Tuesday of each month at either my house or Janet's for a very enjoyable time eating deli-cious food and doing lots of chatting!

Members make the puds at home, usually a size that is for 8 so not too difficult to find recipes. Only3 are made each month so it only means cooking about 4 times a year, the other meetings sit backand enjoy! Most of the group have been together since we started 2002 so it can't be too dauntingbut I assure you we have lots of laughs.

If interested, see me or Janet Whitlam at main meeting or ring Sylvia (633981) or Janet (635607).We will then invite you to next meeting to enable you to see what it is all about Sylvia Slack (01623 633981, [email protected])

Family HistoryYOU DON’T usually read much about the Family History Group in the newsletter, because much ofwhat we do is, to many people, not of absorbing interest. We do, however, have enjoyable meetingsevery month, and usually have a particular topic to talk about. For instance, in January, wediscussed baptisms and Christenings (does anyone know the difference?)* and in February wetalked about weddings, and in March we dealt with deaths and burials.

These three subjects gave great opportunities for members of the group to bring certificates andphotos, and in some cases, unlikely stories or mementoes. We were hoping that at least one of theladies would appear in her wedding dress, a suitable subject for a photo in the newsletter!

Most of us managed to find old photos of family weddings from past generations, which were bothamusing and informative. One member brought a family photo of a golden wedding party whichdated from 1843, which meant that the wedding was held in 1793! The 'golden' party were appropri-ately dressed for the occasion, the ladies being dressed in crinoline dresses, and the gentlemen informal suits with wing collars! The important thing is that everybody joins in, and none of us isashamed of admitting to having a 'skeleton in the cupboard'. (Most of us have!)

We also have a 'breakthrough' session, which means that if any of us has had a breakthrough intheir family research during the previous month, we can all hear about it, and probably learn some-thing to help us with our own researches.

Nobody has found out that they were descended from Richard the Third, but some of us had quitefamous or rich ancestors, although none of their fame or fortune has filtered down to us. We keepdelving – who knows what may emerge the next time we switch the computer on?

On May 26th we are having a coach trip the the National Memorial Arboretum. This will be an inter-esting day out, and who knows, we may find a name that we recognise?

We meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month at the St. John’s Centre so come and join us, you maybe starting a fascinating hobby.Max Clarke (01623 621744, [email protected])* Baptisms are much older than the Christian religion, but Christenings came later, after the Christianchurch was established. If you are 'Christened' you are specifically baptised into the Christian church.John the Baptist baptised Jesus, but at the time there wasn't a Christian Church.

Hikers in the PinfoldON MONDAY April 20th, the Hiking Group led byTrevor and Barbara Kirby went on a 7-mile walk inNottinghamshire. We started from the Magna Chartapub in Lowdham, where we parked with permission.

We started our walk up the main street in Lowdhambefore tuning west via the churchyard and then ontowards Woodborough. The weather was absolutelygreat with brilliant sun and a very light breeze.

In Woodborough we decided to have our lunch-breakand lo and behold we came across a pinfold (acompound used in the past to lock-up stray animals loose in the village) which had a seat just largeenough for our team of eleven – see photograph. Our refreshed team then continued their walkthrough Epperstone and then eventually back to Lowdham and the pub for a refreshing drink.

We all enjoyed the day, which was the first walk that Trevor and Barbara had led for our group soour thanks to them as we look forward to many more from our annual programme.Pete Thurkettle (01623 628136, [email protected])

Luncheon ClubWE RETURNED to Refined at Vision (West Notts College, Derby Road) in April and weredelighted to find that college's catering and hospitality department's students fully maintain thestandards we enjoyed a couple of years ago.

On May 21st, Mike Allen has arranged a visit to Oakmere Park Golf Club for a classic menu thatincludes such favourites as paté, fish 'n chips and a carvery, plus apple crumble and cheesecake.Cost: from £11.50 for 2 courses.

Then, on June 18th, Clive and Sandy Joll will be introducing us to the refurbished White Lion atSelston, where options in their upstairs dining room will include rump steak, gammon 'n chips and achocolate brownie. Cost: from just £9 for 2 courses.

Remember, vegetarian dishes are always offered; all other dietary needs too if you ask when booking.

Details are on the website; please pre-book at the Luncheon Club table or by email.David Ling (01623 822994, [email protected]) Pictures on the website ...
