Dear Parent/Caregiver,Welcome to Kindergarten at Manly West Public School!
We are all excited to be teaching your child/children and look forward to a fantas-
tic year ahead.
During our first week, Kindergarten students have been settling into class and
learning school-based routines, discussing school and class rules, and having fun
getting to know one another. Classes have been established with consistent pro-
grams linked to the New South Wales Syllabus.
Our kindergarten teachers for 2020 are:

VISIBLE LEARNING:
Visible Learning will be embedded in every classroom with teachers utilising Learning Intentions and Success Criteria. Visible Learn-
ing assists students to understand the purpose of the lesson and what they need to do to achieve student outcomes. Visible Learn-
ing engages students in their own learning and provides students with self regulation strategies. Teachers provide feedback to
allow students to strive to improve and to take ownership of their learning.
ENGLISH: Every student will be taught the five essential components of reading in order to grow into a confident and fluent reader. These
aspects will include phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
In Term 1, Kindergarten students will be learning the following sounds and sight words.
MATHEMATICS:
In Mathematics, students will be learning the concepts of Whole Number and Measurement (Time).
Learning to count and understand the many concepts of number is a valuable foundation tool studenst will be taught in Early Stage
One. The National Council of Teachers (USA, 1989) identified five components that characterise number sense: number meaning,
number relationships, number magnitude, operations involving numbers and referents for numbers and quantities. These skills are
considered important because they contribute to general intuitions about numbers and lay the foundation for more advanced
skills.

how capital letters are used for names, and that capital letters and full stops signal the beginning and end of
sentences.

movements and accurate use of alternative writing tools, to form some lower case and upper case
HISTORY:
This term our major theme is entitled ‘All About Me’. This is an integrated unit of work where we will explore the sequence of
each child’s life stages so far, discover their likes and dislikes and the diversity within families. The unit will incorporate the
Key Learning Areas of English and Creative and Performing Arts.
SCIENCE:
The students will explore and investigate the Science unit ‘Weather in my world.’ This involves a link with science and literacy
in the classroom. Students’ beliefs and understandings about the air, sun and wind will be developed as they work through
hands-on activities. Through investigations, they will increase their knowledge of how the characteristics of weather affect
their daily lives.
PDHPE:
Kindergarten’s Gross Motor day will be on Tuesday afternoons starting in Week 4 ,17th February. Students are expected to
wear their sports uniform. The gross motor program is provided by Sports in Schools Australia (SISA). The focus will be on the
fundamental motor skills and physical activities.
VISUAL ART:
Our Visual Art Unit is linked with the Early Stage One History Unit ‘All About Me’. The children will create artworks such as self
-portraits and pictures of their family and experiences. The students will experiment with a range of art materials and will be
introduced to the qualities of different artworks.
LIBRARY:
Each week library sessions will be taught by Mrs Swick. Please ensure your child has their library bag every Monday, starting
Week 5, 24th February.
MUSIC:
Miss Esparraga is our music teacher and will be introducing the children to rhythm and a variety of musical instruments each
week.
Our morning lines can be rather crowded with children, bags, parents and siblings. We ask that you drop your child off at
lines and leave as soon as possible in order to allow enough space for all five classes. This will also help with children who
experience difficulty when separating from mum or dad.
If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to see your child’s class teacher to discuss these. We are looking forward to
a happy, productive year ahead in Kindergarten and look forward to seeing you on Thursday 13th February at 5:30 PM.
Yours Sincerely
