P-2 Swimming Program Our two week swimming program has made a great start! Students have been most enthusiastic, remembering their gear and maximising learning time in the water. Reports commenting on the quality of the instructors has been most encouraging, as we’ve come to expect from Geelong College Pool employees. Thank you to parents for your support of this program, as we collectively help to build water safety competencies and swimming skills. Some schools offer swimming sessions during the school year for students in Grades 3-6; what do you think of this? Please feel welcome to share your thoughts with classroom teachers, other staff or myself. Such programs could be over a week, earlier in the year and perhaps at other venues.

Planning for 2019 Staffing appointments are being confirmed and grades finalised, as the end of the 2018 school year fast approaches. Details will be published when workforce plans for 2019 are costed and communicated to individuals. This week we have been conducting interviews for two new classroom teachers. We are pleased to have been successful with Primary Maths Specialist funding, which will support part time roles for two teachers for the following two years. These staff will lead enhancements to our P-6 Numeracy teaching, curriculum planning and assessment. As a result of these funded positions, we may have a class or two with shared teachers. Specialist subjects in 2019 will be – for our P-2s: PE, Art/Indonesian, Library and Music/Performing Arts . And for our 3-6s: PE, Art/Indonesian, Science and Music/Performing Arts. In 2019 our ‘Music’ specialist program is likely to include a greater component of dance and drama (a more comprehensive performing arts curriculum).

Pupil Free Day – MONDAY 3rd DECEMBER Teachers will be engaged in a range of activities on this day, including 2019 curriculum planning and ICT related professional development. There will not be a weekly Assembly held in this week. Regular classes will resume Tuesday 4th December. At 9am on this day we invite helpers to spread new softfall mulch on to the Junior playground – corner of Manifold St and Strachan Ave. All tools will be on site and we anticipate an hour or so can see this work completed.

Confirmed Start of 2019 School Year Arrangements at Mano Teachers resume TUESDAY 29th JANUARY Students in Grades 1-6 resume WEDNESDAY 30th JANUARY Preps commence THURSDAY 31st JANUARY (Preps do not attend classes on Wednesdays in Term 1).

End of year Student Reports – Due to be Issued Wednesday 12th December Teachers are currently creating these and they are due to be issued in approximately three weeks. Students across all year levels have been completing quite a number of formal assessments recently and these are collectively designed to add greater clarity to the accuracy of teacher

judgments, as will be reported to parents via the upcoming Reports. Teachers within teams also moderate their judgments with colleagues, ensuring enhanced consistency and integrity of student gradings.

Library News During this semester the Library Program from Prep to Grade 2 has focused on comprehension. Students have been involved in whole class discussions about the main ideas, character feelings, story settings, use of descriptive language and illustrations when exploring the purpose of texts. Students have worked with their peers asking questions and presenting individual opinions in order to gain a greater understanding of all the class texts covered in Library lessons. Students have listened to stories such as, ‘I’m Australian Too’, ‘Koala’, ‘The Great Rabbit Chase’ and a variety of wonderful stories by popular authors, Julia Donaldson and Michael Stephen King. Developing a love for reading and books in general is the most important goal in the Library Program.

During the coming weeks students will be required to return all library books in preparation for retrieving and shelving all texts ready for next year. All borrowing for this year will come to a close at the end of week 8, Friday 30th November. The Library program has greatly appreciated all parent helpers during the Book Fairs and the big job of covering all the new books for our lovely Library.

Thank you for your cooperation. Mrs Bencic

Maths in the Middles

This week students have been exploring the concept of Angles and

how they are all around us.

Students used a pipe-cleaner to replicate a variety of angles both in

their classrooms and in the yard. They then measured these to deter-

mine whether they were acute (smaller than a right angle), a right an-

gle or obtuse (larger than a right angle). Students were interested to

find that many of the angles they could locate were right angles.

This week, encourage your child to find to some angles around the house. Are they a right angle? Are they bigger than/or smaller

than a right angle?

A quick reference for both students and parents - http://www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/qr/a/angle.html.

Hi Everyone,

I hope you have all had a great week because we sure have in OSHC. This week’s self-initiated activities include, colouring-

in sheets, paper mache balloons, building blocks, Lego creations, game of life, hungry hippos, chasey, down ball, water

colour paintings, arts and crafts and more! There has been lots of outdoor play making use of the nice weather switching it

up between oval, courts and playground. We have had outdoor play offered every afternoon and on some warmer mornings.

Christmas is just around the corner so educators have worked collaboratively with children to decide on some crafts that we

will make in OSHC. Some children have helped me print off colouring-in sheets that will be used for our Christmas colouring

in completion! Just to remind you again, Term 4 is hats and sunscreen so ensure you bring your hats along to OSHC if you

want to go outside. We provide sunscreen although you are welcome to bring your own. If you want you can leave a spare

hat at OSHC for the days you attend the service.

If you are looking for registration, just log onto www.campaustralia.com.au

Just reminding parents if your child is not attending the OSHC program on any day they are booked, you must let us know

via phone as we are to follow correct procedures in locating children who have not shown up. So please ensure you send us

a text or call via phone on the Manifold Heights OSHC mobile phone service number which is 0405 422 142.

Thank you to all families. Georgie
