Management versus leadership

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Three initial points: manage things lead people, management and leadership can and does overlap, leaders can manage and managers can lead, and to lead you need to have followers

Leadership per Jim Collins

Level 5 refers to the highest level in a hierarchy of executive capabilities that he identified during his research.

Leaders at the other four levels in the hierarchy can produce high degrees of success but not enough to elevate companies from mediocrity to sustained excellence

getting the right people on the bus (and the wrong people off the bus)

creating a culture of discipline

Participative approach, first who then what

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Jim Collins wrote Good to Great and How the Mighty Fall and is considered a management guru who didn’t believe in the leadership factor until the numbers forced him to reconsider

Leadership is tough stuff (Vision alone is not enough)

Situational awareness

Leaders need a compelling vision of the future

The vision needs to be the right vision

Leaders need to sell their vision

Must be a big picture thinker

Leaders get people to follow

Compassionate

High emotional intelligence

Likeable-appealing to the common man and the intellectual at the same time

Smart, good memory, don’t bring up ancient history

Personal integrity, high ethical standards

Mistakes must be remedied early

Consistency while being adaptable

Articulate, poised, charm, charisma

Self confidence is good

Focused-Sticks to the talking points

Context determines the formula that is needed

Ulysses Grant U.S. Grant

Never sought elected office, the office sought the man Was a miserable failure in civilian life

Worked as a shoe salesman for a family member Failed in 2 other businesses

Was NOT eloquent Delivered his acceptance speech in a letter

Was rumored to be corrupt and a drunk Were it not for the war, he would have had a life of mediocrity

The context made the leader?

Was excellent at situational awareness He was willing to fight and make decisions He was aware of the big picture: Secession would mean more lives lost than the war itself
