Proposal for skywalks in T. Nagarand Parry’s Corner gains paceBy Our Staff Reporter

Private consultants appointed by Tamilnadu Urban InfrastructureFinancial Services Limited (TUFISIL) will prepare a project report inthree months for the proposed skywalks linking West Mambalamsuburban railway station and T. Nagar bus depot, and another oneconnecting Fort Station and Parry’s Corner.

An official said that there are two proposals for the skywalk linkingWest Mambalam Railway Station and the T. Nagar depot. An L-shaped skywalk will allow one to walk above Eashwaran Koil Road fromthe T. Nagar bus depot towards Madley subway, and take a 90-degreeright turn to Mambalam railway station. Another proposal is to buildan elevated skywalk to cross over Ranganathan Street and UsmanRoad.

Sir, At the Burkit Road junction (T. Nagar), the traffic departmenthas fixed a board to caution share auto drivers from parking or idlingtheir vehicles to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

Shops rent outfootpath to vendors

Pavements outside shops havebecome a money spinner for ownersand shopkeepers in Chennai.

It has become common fea-tureto see temporary / perma-nentkiosks on pavements outsidesupermarkets, vege-table shopsand other such shops which havegood amount of daily footfalls.These shops either rent the spaceor get a share in the turnover.

After the Corporation relo-catedthe hawkers from Pondy Bazaar,the shops have started renting outthe space in front of their shops tovendors. Several commercialestablishments have also spreadtheir wares on the pavemen-ts, causing obstruction to pedes-trians. In Pondy Bazaar it has beenreported that a kiosk outsidepopular shops is rented out foranywhere between Rs. 300 to Rs.700 per day, which can cross Rs.1000 on weekends.

Popular Carnatic musicianU. Shrinivas passed away at aprivate hospital in Chennai onSept. 19.

According to doctors, the 45-year-old musician, who hadundergone a liver transplantand was recuperating, devel-oped some complications andpassed away. He had given anumber of performances inleading sabhas and halls in theneighbourhood.

Shrinivas was the first per-son to use the mandolin in Car-natic music. He modified theinstrument to suit the Carnaticpitch and raga. He is said tohave found the instrument in astudio where his father wasemployed. He had also per-formed a number of fusion con-certs with many leading west-ern musicians. He had distin-

guished himself in collabora-tions with artistes of the cali-bre of Zakir Hussain, Hari-prasad Chaurasia, Sivamani,Vikku Vinaykram and Domin-ique Piazza.

He was awarded the PadmaShri in 1998 and the SangeetNatak Akademi Award in2010.

Shrinivas is survived by hisparents, brother Mandolin U.Rajesh and sister.

Ramkumar, who spoke toMambalam Times from theUS, said that in the projectthat took four years, scientiststried to create a fundamentalunderstanding of the effect offibre structure and basic char-acteristics of cotton on oil ab-sorption capacity of unproc-

essed raw cotton. Thework also examinedthe basic mecha-nisms behind oil ab-sorption by non-wo-ven cotton webs, hesaid.

He said that ‘Fibe-rtect’ will have tremendouspotential for application in real-time oil spill scenarios alongwith environmental sustain-ability and commercial accept-ability.

Ramkumar was born andbrought up in West Mamba-lam. He was a resident ofJanaki Ammal Street. His par-ents have been living in WestMambalam for over 60 years.

He did his schooling in lead-ing schools including AnjugamSchool, Hindu Vidyalaya andRamakrishna Mission (South).
