MYSTERY PHOTO FROM AROUND 1957
THE AWARDS The previous Carnival Committee gave their historic trophies into the care of the Council & so, though they were awarded, legally they could not be taken away from council premises. The Mayor & Deputy Mayor, Cllr Steve Palmer & Cllr Bob Dawes are thus seen here guarding them…
….but then the trophies were awarded, photos were taken & certificates presented as follows…
The Mablethorpe Challenge Cup to the Coastal Scouts for the best float
The Butlin Trophy Cup to KJ’s Dance Troupe The Butlin Cup for the best vintage vehicle
to the John Coxon Coal Lorry The Butlin Trophy to Chelsea Beach The Glenridge Cup to KIDZ 2911 The Havens Holidays Cup to PC Karl Drewery
for winning the Aquapark Challenge
The Silk Cup for the Best Non-motorized vehicle to Hayley Wheat The Mablethorpe & Sutton Town Council Shield to the Pirate Bus
as the best trade vehicle
The ELDC Cup for the Most Unusual Entry to the Creamer Family for Mabel the Tank
The Rita Dudley Trophy to the Smarty Pants Pre-School
The Albert Sivyer Trophy to Lacy Green The Seacroft Mobility Shield to Maurice Kime The Bill Gerard Memorial Shield to the Silverbird Band
The Dudley Dimwits Trophy to Angie & Sassie The Dales Bowl to the Carnival Queen Charlotte Richardson
Two other gifts were
then presented… to Steffy Carruthers & Christine James [LEFT] in recognition of all they have done
towards raising the £8,000 it took to stage this year’s Carnival.
And yes… this target WAS reached …so we are now able to plan 2019
with the Parade scheduled for SEPTEMBER 21ST!
HOMELESS ACCOMMODATION: VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT EVENING
Hope House Church operates two homes for men who are homeless or facing housing crisis, which house a total of 8 men in Mablethorpe. Our homes provide care & support to our residents in a safe environment & we work with them to help overcome any problems they are facing so that they can go on to achieve independent living.
We are looking to recruit volunteers who are interested to work in the following areas: ➤ House Carers: – providing help with cleaning and general housekeeping, shopping etc. ➤ Befrienders: People who are willing to be friends with our residents,
calling in for a cuppa and a chat, having a meal, socialising etc. We also need befrienders who can drive, taking residents for medical appointments etc. ➤ Teatime support: Coming in to the house to help the residents prepare an evening meal,
spend time with them socialising and helping them clean up after the meal. We need volunteers to assist with covering these responsibilities 7 days a week. A Funding Officer is also needed. We are looking to recruit a volunteer who will work in the background to source funding for our growing work.
We are holding a recruitment evening on Monday 29th October at 7pm here at Hope House, 97 Victoria Road, Mablethorpe, LN12 2AL. We will provide information on what we do & what volunteering with us will involve. Come along & find if this sort of volunteering might be for you.
You can book a place by phone / text on 07775 844 206, e mail [email protected] Alternatively just turn up on the evening; & if you are interested but cannot come then,
just contact us for more information

The SO Festival this year was launched in Mablethorpe with a series of acts along the main promenade that left audiences by turns spellbound & in fits of laughter… Here are shots of one of them… no words but a situation which rings all too true for those of us who have given way to the temptation of opening a DIY Cassandra’s box. The instruction on this particular chest was quite clear…. At least for anyone with a passing knowledge of French: NE PAS OUVRIR But yes, we were dying for this performer to follow his natural instincts & see what was inside this mysterious receptacle: And out sprang a pop up tent which no way was going to be packed away again, any time soon… …even with the help of a most willing small assistant & a page full of instructions…
STREET THEATRE AT ITS FINEST!
So the contest continued… with casual dog-walkers who happened on the scene being met with accusing looks as if they were to blame for the recalcitrance of the tent… The breathless contortions that ensued definitely showed the tent had the upper hand. It appeared at one point indeed to have swallowed the poor unfortunate performer - who when he escaped, regurgitated, was trouserless… & more demeaning than that: when he rescued his trousers from within the tent he found their legs totally shredded…
Will we ever learn to leave well alone?
NE PAS OUVRIR!!!
There are many to whom we are indebted for the way the Carnival has been revived so successfully ~ in particular Terry Stow who acted as treasurer, & Cllr Tony Howard who set the parade off from Queen’s Park. Daniel Richardson guided the Queen’s contingent who were most generously entertained to lunch at Towervans while Graham Parkhurst gathered a great team of stewards taking care of the route & the brilliant Firework Display by the UK champions, Selstar. Gratitude is also due to Martin Brant & the Lions who raised almost £1,000 towards the event.
Thank you to the Magna Vitae Team for the Challenge afternoon at the Station Sports Centre with an array of games testing the skill of old & young alike [ABOVE]
& thank you to the Cadets who not only helped steward the parade but also entertained us to a Carnival barbecue [BELOW]
AMONG THE FUND RAISING EVENTS…
Our front cover shows the model boat display on Queen’s Park Lake: & here [LEFT] is our Carnival Queen launching one of the boats, aided by a duck that’s being pursued by a shark….
Then [LEFT AGAIN] here’s Richard Smith of the Aquapark briefing our noble constabulary led by Cherry Kelly prior to their taking the plunge…
Then [LEFT AGAIN]
is a groupie with the band Good Company who braved the rain to play in Spanish City…
& lastly: our Queen & her Princesses!
A RATHER DAMP DOG SHOW
Anyone else given the weather forecast would have waved a white flag & gone home to bed…. But not the intrepid Margaret Codling! And her faith in human nature (let alone Canine Nature) was deservedly rewarded. Gareth Rowland stoked up the HOLIVANS BBQ, cars pulled up… & out of them & from the shelter under the atrium out poured (probably the wrong verb) contestants as each class was announced. The winners were as follows: 1: Cute Puppies
Sam with Bertie 2: Pretty Girls
Louis with Evie 3:Handsome Boys
Amy with Bertie 4: Mixed Breed Dogs
Catherine with Snatch 5: Golden Oldies
Becky with Milo
6: Rescued Dogs Rod with Tye & Holly
7: Young Handlers Georgina with Henry
8: Twins Barbara with Minion & Sushi
9: Best Six Legs Sue with Gay
10: Tricks Barbara with Sushi
Despite it being one of the worst days of the summer 30 dogs took part & everyone went home with rosettes… And £56 was made in aid of the Carnival. A Big Thank you to Margaret & her judges & to Gareth & Holivans.
While on holiday one of our readers spotted this… They were NOT responsible for scrawling the # YES which the sign obviously solicited.
AND ONE BIG LAST THANK YOU to all those who contributed financially to help get the Carnival revived. We are especially grateful for ELDC council grants made by Cllr Terry Brown, Cllr Graham Cullen & Cllr Tony Howard, & for £300 from Russell of MIRAGE. And the show would not have gone on the road (quite literally) without the support of the VISIT LINCS BID Levy Payers who contributed £1,500 towards the road closure costs.
FAREWELL TO ROY PALMER OUR OUTSTANDING TOWN-CRIER
As is generally known now our Town Crier Roy Palmer has for over four years now been commuting from Skegness to mark event after event here in Mablethorpe & Sutton-on-Sea with skilfully crafted witty proclamations, usually in rhyming couplets & occasionally going a little near the line. After the sad loss of his wife Roy suddenly had the offer of a “berth” in the Royal Hospital by becoming a Chelsea Pensioner. No sooner, though, had he moved in there than he made friends with another pensioner & persuaded him to visit his beloved Mablethorpe where Roy made one last proclamation on the putting green of Queen’s Park… while his new friend, resplendent in scarlet, assisted the Mayor of Skegness Cllr Sid Dennis in judging the participants in the parade… travelling with him & the Skegness Mayoress in the pony & trap very generously supplied by Brian Wilson of Mumby.
Before leaving for London (for he first time) a surprise party was arranged for him by Kath Barker of the Blitz [STANDING BY
ROY IN THE PHOTO]. Helped by Cllr Graham Cullen it took place in the Louth Hotel, where many past mayors of Mablethorpe & Sutton gathered with other representatives to pay tribute to Roy & to cut a beautiful cake made in his honour.
…AND SO, IN CONSEQUENCE, HERE IS THIS APPEAL FROM OUR TOWN CLERK:
OYEZ, OYEZ, OYEZ, MABLETHORPE NEEDS A NEW TOWN CRIER! The vacancy exists following the relocation to the Royal Hospital Chelsea of our Town Crier, Roy Palmer. We wish him all the very best for the future: we know that he will be fantastic! Roy had carried out the duties of Town Crier for Mablethorpe & Sutton-on-Sea since September 2011 & he was then our first Town Crier.
We need someone to come forward to fill his shoes – and they are big shoes to fill! Roy leaves behind a legacy of dozens of proclamations made & events attended, representing & promoting the Parish far & wide.
Applications are invited from interested individuals who should be outgoing & personable, with a ready wit, a good command of language & an interest in composing & presenting proclamations to large groups of people.
Events can be weekdays, weekends, day or evening, & some local travel will be involved. The post is honorary & unpaid, whilst expenses for travel will be considered.
Applicants should complete an application form obtainable from the Town Clerk’s Office at Mablethorpe Library & CAP on Stanley Avenue, Mablethorpe, or request an electronic copy by calling 01507 613645.

A thorough survey of the Sutton colonnade has shown the pieces of concrete falling off it recently are evidence of the deterioration of the structure. It would be possible, at some expense, to make do & mend;
SUTTON-ON-SEA’S COLONNADE
The Sutton Residents Association, which has been doing first aid on the huts above the paddling pool & letting them, has therefore surrendered the lease of these chalets early in the hope that swift moves may be taken towards a general renovation of all the foreshore. The first hand experience of the Association volunteers & that of the Sutton Gardening Group bears out the diagnosis that the time for such radical step is well due.
ELDC will shortly be announcing the way it intends to consult about the future of the foreshore while the Town Council has already set up a working party to consult on the options.
The Mablethorpe Coastal Community Team, along with the Residents Association, has in the meantime submitted a bid for government funding.
It is envisaged that the paddling pool (donated to the village by Canada after the 1953 Flood) will remain, while the chalets will be re-built in the same iconic style but using materials better able to stand the weather.
Research by the Association has shown the value of the chalets to the local economy. Residents & visitors have made suggestions as to other improved facilities. With respect to the colonnade itself it is generally felt that shelter & (especially if we have more summers like this last one) shade is needed: but the structure needs to be more versatile encouraging craft outlets, entertainment & picnics. There must be an eye on the local economy while maintaining Sutton’s traditional charm & tranquillity.
BELOW:
A HISTORIC PHOTO OF THE INSTALLATION OF MABLETHORPE’S FIRST MOBILE PHONE
but ELDC has taken the decisive action to prepare to demolish it ~ along with the iconic chalets, the weight of which is increasing pressure on the colonnade.

THE OLDER PEOPLE’S FAIR AT THE DUNES
Our MP Victoria Atkins took this new initiative, bringing together a remarkable number of groups in our area who are catering for the needs & interests of our senior citizens.
As well as pointers towards where one can access financial & general welfare advice there were groups running activities including Bridge, Yoga, Drama, Knitting, Crafts & Model Boat building. If you missed it & would like info visit the Coastal Centre,
whose manager Terry Stow is pictured here with

MABLETHORPE
[BELOW] A more leisurely (but as tense?) a contest hosted by Russell at the Mirage. He is pictured here with the contestants [MAYOR versus QUEEN] plus the Mayoress
who simply cheered for her husband…
And initially this had the desired effect. As can be seen from the scoreboard below,
the Mayor took a commanding lead.
But in the closing stages Queen Charlotte seemed to get the hang of it….
… and Cllr Steve had to accept a resounding defeat
… with, it must be said, his accustomed
graciousness!
