The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar the greenback rose broadly against major peers on upbeat US consumer confidence data. Malaysian banks underweight given the new threats to earnings growth despite the recent interest rates hike due to intensified competition for deposits, lethargic business loan growth, rising capital requirements, a new ruling on Islamic deposits and unattractive valuations. The ringgit will likely appreciate in the third quarter as investors hunt for stronger yields in emerging markets like Malaysia.
