2 SPRING/2011

Spring is here and it’s time for the new issue of Makeu-p4all Magazine. As it is our first anniversary I’ve de-

cided to make some changes and I really hope that you will like them.

The hottest topic of this issue is diversity. Do you love pastels or brights, will you splash out or save, are you a rock diva or a slick chick? One thing is for sure, there are choices for everyone.

In this issue we have two brilliant Make-Up Artists who are amazing and creative, yet both have their own stun-ning, unique style. The edgy and innovative Alex Box cre-ates mind blowing images and stretches the boundaries of make-up artistry, while Lisa Eldridge specialises in modern aspirational and sophisticated looks. Their work reflects their personality - Alex is a Creative Director for British al-ternative brand Illamasqua and Lisa is Creative Director for the British brand No7. In this issue you can find out more

about Lisa’s latest project, Chanel Confidential.

We have gathered the best Spring 2011 makeup collections for you to choose from, my personal wish list and, as usu-al, created an tempting shopping list. We share the hottest makeup trends from the SS 2011 runways. This season is all about nature intensified. Bold neons like tropical flowers, gentle pinks and pastels from emerging spring flowers and scents of just bloomed blossoms imitate the wild and the beautiful. If you want to know what make-up products will be the biggest trend this Spring and what to buy for your make-up bag to stay on trend, we got that covered, too!

Make this Spring all about a new make-up awakening. Try a colour you have never used before, change the shape of your nails, experiment with tinted moisturiser if you’re used to foundation or swap powder shadows and blushes to sheer, crème formulas. Shake it up a little, and enjoy your Spring beauty!

And, remember, whatever look you want to wear, you can do it! Confidence is the best beauty secret of all.

Marina, the Founder and Editor of MakeUp4All

4 SPRING/2011

A year ago when I worked on the first issue of this Magazine I was absolutely thrilled to have a look cre-ated by Lisa Eldridge on the cover and an interview with her as she is one of my favourite Make Up Art-ists. This issue Lisa shares her news with us and also talks about her brand new project - Chanel Confi-dential.

You are a source of inspiration to a lot of aspiring Make-Up Artists so what advice would you give to them? Maybe you can share the first steps of your own career?

I have a series of films on how to be a make-up artist going on to my website. (Some of them are already live and some are coming soon, go to Lisa’s website http://www.lisaeldridge.com/ to check them out – Editor)

Besides being a famous MUA, you are also a Creative Director of No7. Can you give us an inside tour on how you create the new collection? How long does it take? What do you like the best about this process?

The process of cre-ating a new No7 collection takes about one month, from start to fin-ish. First of all, I have to come up with a concept and then every-thing starts to fall into place. My experi-

ence from 20 years in the business helps me with this and I

combine this experience with cultural influences from art, film, architecture, interiors…everything I’m absorbing in my daily life. I often visit the top make up manufacturing factories in Europe, where huge teams are always developing new cosmetics technology, so I get sense of how this will be used in the coming year or two. Sourcing images to fit with my concept takes up the most time in the process. I then present my dream scenario to Boots, with my

references and influences, ideal colours, textures and packaging. Sometimes I get almost exactly what I envisioned, but other times my vision doesn’t match the budget or the commercial reality. In the build up to presenting the collection, I am always so excited and enthusiastic, but a week later I have already for-gotten about it because I’m on to the next collection!

You have a lot of products in your personal makeup bag and in your kit but maybe there are products that are on your wish list? How do you choose makeup and beauty products?

The trips I make to the European Cosmetic factories are exciting for me as I get to see what is going to be on the counters, in my kit and the kits of other great MUAs. The products that stick out on these trips are the ones that I want to get my hands on as quickly as possible. Although it can take up to 2 years to see them on general sale on counter I usually take sam-ples and start trying them out in my kit straight away. I am always on the lookout for new and innovative textures, especially those which can make my job easier and give me even better results.

What is your personal favourite makeup look and what is the most requested look? Do you think there are “ba-sic” looks that everyone should know how to create?

The basics are so important, everyone should know how to do a great base and use concealer correctly and effectively. The most requested look is smoky eyes but without a great base they will never look good. My go-to make up look for myself always involves perfected, even and luminous skin. I use a touch of foundation, concealer and of course highlight my cheek bones with BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector. I like neu-tral browns and bronzes with low level shimmer on my eyes with lots of mascara and of course groomed brows are a must! I tend to keep lips a nudey pink and I always breathe life into my cheeks with blush.

You live in London, one of the most beautiful and amaz-ing cities, what do you like the best about it? And what is your favourite place in the World?

My favourite thing about London is that it’s so easy to access culture. There is always a new art exhibition, concert, film or show to see. I can always find some-thing close by to inspire me. Apart from home, my favourite places are The Wallace Collection and Tate Modern. The Wallace Collection is not only one of the most beautiful museums in London with each room being decorated in the most heavenly way but it also holds an amazing assortment of art, furniture and in-teriors. Tate Modern brings together some of the most influential pieces of modern art, which always gives me so much to think about. Another reason I love liv-ing here is Net a Porter do a same day delivery service for London

What kind of music/films/art do you like?

I listen to a real mixture of music and find inspira-tion in many types of film and art. Recently, I loved the theatricality of Black Swan. At the moment, I love a French 60s/70s pop CD bought for me by a good friend, I find it really fun and witty. At the same time, I am continuously updating my music collec-

tion, downloading new artists and songs from iTunes. What colours in makeup would you suggest wearing this Spring?

I have just started work-ing on a great new pro-ject, which launched this Spring collaborating with Peter Philips on ‘Chanel Make Up Confidential’(http://chanel-confidential.chanel.com/flash/). This brand new website will provide Chanel Make-Up with a digital platform, a monthly on-line magazine for beauty fans. There will be lots of animated clips of Peter’s robots, backstage footage, interviews and a new video each month from me showing you how to achieve beautiful looks with the limited edition products and collections. The site will develop more over this summer with new ideas for different styles of films and concepts. We are try-ing out different things ahead of the global launch this Autumn. Peter and I have a lot of mutual respect for each other’s work and always enjoy getting together to talk about the site. I’m also really proud of my spring and summer collections for No.7. Spring was inspired by St Tropez in the late 50’s and early 60’s and by the film Le Mempris and summer is my homage to Jerry Hall and is deliciously glam and very 70’s with glossy red lips, uber bronzed skin and metallic eyes. I’m just putting my finishing touches on the 2012 Summer collection now and am poised to start autumn 2012 (for which I already have a very dramatic concept!) so it’s all go. There are some other VERY exciting plans and projects in the pipeline which I’m working away behind the scenes on….watch this space!

I am also happy to introduce Make-Up Artist and Crea-tive Director of Illamasqua – Alex Box. Her unique looks are truly works of art and an inspiration to many.

Q: I know that you’ve studied arts and then you found yourself work-ing as a Make-Up Artist. How did you realize that you love the art of make-up?

Even as a painter I weirdly kept a scrap book of eyes, lips, eye brows, make-up shapes... I didn’t know why. I wannted to create my own image and own work spilled on to me - I’d be extreme in how I looked but then creatively, eve-rything leaks in to everything - it all has a direct link to painting from styling, hairdressing, make-up... painterly aspects exist every-where.

Q: What are your personal favour-ite products from Illamasqua? What products would you recom-mend to those who are new to the brand?

Lipstick in Box is my favourite, for obvious reasons! I had a mas-sive input in the formulation - as a life long wearer of red lipstick it’s a real thrill to have my own, it’s every make-up artists dream! I also love the intensity of the prod-ucts - the blendability, richness, it’s really unbelievable and I get blown away rediscovering the col-lection. The Powder Eye Shadows especially have fabulous pay off, but it also translates throughout the rest of the collection - nails, glosses. I have recently rediscov-ered Intense Lipgloss in ‘Fierce’ a fabulous vibrant purple, perfect as an intense gloss for the lips or sheered out for a wash on the lids and the cheekbones.

Q: How long does it take to create a new make-up collection?

Good question. I am always evolving, and always thinking for-ward so an idea I come up with today may make a collection in 6 months or 6 years. It’s all very holistic - you can put ideas to use straight way or put it to one side, however from literal initial sit down “right, what are we doing for our Autumn Winter collection?” to launch normally takes about 6 months. Everything inspires me from film, art, nature, science. That’s my favourite part of creat-ing a new collection; visualising

the story, linking it to the prod-ucts we want and the final narra-tive imagery. We create characters. They exist only for that collection, are created for the sole purpose of that collection. They don’t exist outside of it and that is very dif-ferent in this industry where im-ages could belong to a variety of ‘collections’. Our characters could never exist in any collection other than the one they are designed for. That’s a rather beautiful thing.

Q:London is such an amazing city. Do you have a favourite place?

The Wolesey for pure unabashed old school decadence. And won-derful omelettes! So high SoHo is the best shop in London for glam-orous tat and comedy visuals.

Q: Who is your favourite artist?

[straight away] Francis Bacon. No doubt. So contemporary, alluring and as fresh as he ever was. The complex work means something different to me at every stage of my life and career. Genius.

[Alex waxes lyrical on Bacon for about ten minutes at this point!]

Q: Can you tell us the products that are always in your make-up kit?

EVERYTHING! Everything but the kitchen sink ... and actually a bit of the kitchen sink! I am known for my artistic creativity so I have to have a massive kit; pebbles, glit-ter, papier mache, arts and crafts galore as well as make-up for skin

tones from white to black, colours across the whole spectrum. Sev-eral suitcases worth.

Q: Please share what is on your beauty wish list?

Anything by Natura Bisse. I will be booking myself in for an agua Spa diamond facial. I also want a lifetime supply of Lipstick in ‘Box’ from Illamasqua!

Q: And what about the Spring/Sum-mer collection by Illamasqua? Here are some quotes by Alex Box.On the collection…

“It’s an unashamedly romantic tox-ic tenderness. A corrupted cute-ness. An incandescent innocence. I was inspired by looking at Japa-nese dolls with their incredibly exquisite play on proportion; large eyes, button mouths, long limbs. I was also inspird by a variety of il-lustrators that create ethereal, ro-mantic drawings. The idea behind the collection was a hybrid race, a mutated race with exaggerated proportions, exagger-ated features. “

On The Styling/ Hair/ Make-up“I wanted to create a real sense of of illustration and painting – blends and dabs, daubs, washes of pigment and more intense, de-liberate strokes and marks and to translate this to the styling. I had a very clear idea of over-ex-aggeration with the hair – almost doll like caricatures. Like when

you are a little girl and you draw on your barbies hair with your felt tips! The pastel colours fit with the colour scheme of the products. “The “toxic tip” was inspired by the iconic Illamasqua nail design, but with the mutated, clashing yet beautiful colours from the collec-tion. It allows you to create a range of shades to create your own pal-ette.”On the products“This collection is very exciting due to a new product texture in the Cream Pigments and an outstand-ing story of colours that are at once beautiful, unique and mutated.”

On the Cream Pigments“I don’t think we have ever created a product that is as hard working as Cream Pigments. They can cor-rect or enhance, disguise or reveal. I am obsessed with their versatil-ity; blush, lips, eyes, contouring … they are absolutely my favourite product right now. Super-blend-able, they can be pressed and blended in to skin or slicked on for graphic shapes. Education is key with the pigments. Once you have learnt how to master them you can control their impact. “

On the Precision Ink in ‘Glister’“It’s the anti-liner. It will revolu-tionise and update your make-up look. The unusual, unique shade is great as an eye liner to cut through deep shades, or to use as part of a nude look, or as a lipliner to exag-gerate. “

10 SPRING/2011

And here is the collection and the beautiful makeup created by Alex Box.

Unpredictable, uncharted and unnatural, Illamasqua unleashes Toxic Nature for Spring/Summer 2011, a colour collection born from a visionary concept of nature fighting back against the geneti-cally modified society that plun-ders it. Illamasqua has created the Toxic Nature collection through a palette of lurid shades, corrupted hues and glistening muted tones that offer intoxicating versions of their original selves.

Like nature itself, it’s not all sweet-ness and light. Shades of mint, mushroom, plum, orange and rose are distorted with rich textures and pops of acid-infused bright-ness that command attention and draw you in…

Cream Pigments (£17.00) A new matt formula that can either neutralise or dominate. Create the ultimate in textures whether it’s on your face, eyes, or body, bringing a flash of colour to a subtle contour.Emerge – Peach    [EU only],Bedaub – Mint, Dab – Lilac, Hollow – Toffee, Delirium – Rose Taupe  [EU only], Mould – Grape.

Precision Ink in ‘Glister’ (£17.00) Create looks with attitude with this glistening opalescent nude. It dries within seconds and stays true for hours, so whatever you scrawl on your skin, you know your creation will last until dawn. Lipstick (£15.50) Intense Lipstick with a highly pigmented formula that glides on smoothly, creating a statement. Atomic – Fuchsia violet, Flare – Bright orangeSheer Lipgloss (£13.00) Come out of the shadows with a high-shine punch of colour. Glossy, intense, and highly pigmented, Illamasqua Sheer Lipgloss is long-lasting,

Hardwear-ing and chip-resistant.Purity – Peach, Bacterium – Pearl-escent Ash Ochre, Radium – Acid-ic Lime Shimmer, Stagnate – Grey Mauve, Gamma – Neon orangeToxic Claw (£35.00) Illamasqua are proud to present the second collaboration with visionary mani-curist, Mike Pocock.  A beautifully presented set of two false thumb nails, these have been designed

and individually hand made by Mike. ‘The mutated aesthetic of the nail was inspired by the cor-rupted hues present in the Toxic Nature collection’.If you will need more info Hollow – This toffee shade is perfect as a contour on paler skintones. It also works brilliantly as an eye shadow base on olive – darker skintones.Emerge – This peach brightens under eye shadows and is beau-tiful as a highlighter on olive – darker skintones. It’s also a very flattering blusher on paler skin tones.Delirium – This rose taupe shade

is fantastic for contouring pale – olive skin tones, as well as healthy flush to all skintones as a blusher and as a soft lip colour. Bedaub – This mint green is a wonderful eye base, and is flatter-ing on all skintones.Mould – Because every Spring col-lection needs a touch of darkness, this grape is stunning as a base for a smoky eye or intense, statement lip.Dab – This gentle lilac is beautiful for eyes lips and cheeks, especially for a 60s look.

Who doesn’t want to indulge in bright and juicy colours for Spring and Summer? Luckily for us, there were a lot of great examples on the catwalk. Bright teal and oceanic turquoise at at Oscar de la Renta, red-dish pink at Nina Ricci, our (Editor’s) favourite uber-bright, matte, fuchsia lips at Fendi and DVF, as well as bright, vibrant orange at Marc Jacobs. But if you like metallic glints of silver and gold – Rodarte and Prada had the looks just for you!

Page 49: MakeUp4All Spring 2011 On-line Beauty Magazine

Although dark berry and plum lips are not for everyone, they can be adapted to your style and skin tone by choosing shades a little lighter than the very deep hues seen at Yves Saint Laurent, Armani, Lui Vuitton and Givenchy SS 2011 Runway shows. If you opt for a noctur-nal shade, make sure that you keep the rest of your face neutral to make it wearable and chic, not gothic and over dramatic, unless this is what you are aiming for!

Finding an everyday look that is right for you takes trial and error. Catwalk extremes aren’t achievable for daily use, but ABC showed wearable and manageable shades using choco-late browns, terracotta and bronze for eyes and face. Smudge dark brown or black eye liner and add bronze or black mas-cara for a sexy look; add a warm peachy blush and neutral glossy lip and you are ready to conquer the World!

SPRING/2011 55

Just like the red lips, eye liner is a classic! If you think cat eye is too much for you – opt for a fine line as seen at Hermes. Want a cat eye with a difference? Try the square one Peter Philips created for Chanel. And remember, eye liner doesn’t just come in black. If you are feeling creative try the eye liner along the lower eye lashes using black or white - any colour you feel like actually. Derek Lam showed stunning looks with red liner, while Loewe opted for spicy rainbow shades of purple, tur-quoise, green and yellow.

Like You, But Better

58 SPRING/2011

Page 59: MakeUp4All Spring 2011 On-line Beauty Magazine

A no makeup look or natural chic is never dated. The key is a flawless tone and glowing complexion. Flushed cheeks, highlighters, contouring, groomed eye brows and moisturized lips are also natural look essentials. Curl your lashes upward to eliminate the need for mascara, or if you can’t do without try a transparent one so lashes look dewy and delicate.

62 SPRING/2011

Page 63: MakeUp4All Spring 2011 On-line Beauty Magazine

Red lipstick is such a classic, every girl should have one. You just have to find ‘the one’ that makes makes your heart beat faster! It could be a voluptuous, glossy red seen at the Viktor & Rolf show or a blue-toned, classic red twinned with a bold red manicure a la Gucci. Rich, orange reds were seen at Twenty8Twelve and Marni, while Yohji Yamamoto and Jean Paul Gaultier opted for vampish, deep crimsons .

Spring/Summer 2011 is defi-nitely a season of lip prod-ucts as almost every brand is launching a new range of lipsticks, liners or glosses.

But what to choose from the new crop of lip lovelies - balm or gel based lipstick? Light and balmy textures are flattering, sheer and smooth-ing making them perfect for the lighter days of spring.

Meet the newbies.

• Dior Addict Line• Chanel Coco Rouge

A lighter texture isn’t right for everyone, so there are plenty of high-pigment heavy-weights to choose from, too.

• Estee Lauder Pure Color Lipstick

• Guerlain Rouge Auto-matic

• NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil

• Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Color SPF 12

• Givenchy Gelee d’Interdit.

An absolute must-have for SS 2011.The Cheek Satins are available in Rouge (sheer rose), Flush (sheer red) and Petal (sheer pink/coral shimmer). As for the Lip Satins you can choose from Scarlet (sheer plum), Flush (sheer red) and Petal (sheer pink/coral shimmer).
