Improving lives through sports, health and well being

PickleballPickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton court the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball, similar to a wiffle ball, and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

RecreationSo many activities serve to restore our spirits and energy, get us outdoors and test our limits. And for many of us, they’re the foundation of active living and rewarding relationships. Cycling, running, racquetball, swimming and many more recreational activities are available at your Y. Instruction, lessons and group trips are likely part of the mix, so it may be time for you to try something new.

Adult Skate Session Skaters must be a member or purchase a Skate Park Monthly Pass and must be 18 years or older. Full pads and helmet are required. Skaters under 18 years of age are only permitted to skate when accompanied by an adult skater. Sunday adult skate has an acting attendant. Please enter through north gate of the skate park.

Adult Team SportsWhether you miss “suiting up” or are new to team sports, the Y’s sports leagues provide a perfect opportunity to be active, social and reconnect or start fresh with a sport you love. We offer adult basketball leagues on Tuesday and Thursday night.

YOUTH SPORTSOur Youth Sports Leagues build winners in life – one child at a time. Our philosophy is simple … EVERYBODY PLAYS, EVERYBODY WINS! We emphasize good sportsmanship, fitness, fair play, fundamentals and fun while implementing our core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

BasketballYouth Basketball encourages and promotes healthy kids, families and communities by prioritizing family involvement, wholesome competition and the value of participation - not just winning. Kids and teens learn team-building skills, a sense of fair play and mutual respect, all while growing as individuals and developing a positive self-image.

Rookie ClinicClass introduces kids to the game of basketball and helps develop a basic understanding of rules and skills.

League PlayOpen to boys and girls grades 1-9. YMCA hosts Recreational League 3 times a year. Teams practice during the week and play games throughout Tucson on Saturdays. All levels of skill are welcome.

SPORTS & SKILLS

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. And the benefits are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning to swim or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, participating in sports at the Y is about building the whole child, from the inside out.

Youth Fitness/ExerciseStop by your nearest YMCA Family Center for additional Youth Wellness and Fitness options unique to that YMCA branch.

Looking for a structured, yet fun way for youth to work out and build healthy exercise habits to last a lifetime? Kids ages 9-15 can meet with a trainer to get their youth orientation. They will be cleared to use specific machines with an adult present. Youth ages 9-12 can take part in a group exercise class with an adult. B / WATER EXPLORATION In stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

STAGE DESCRIPTIONS

SWIM STARTERS

2 / WATER MOVEMENT In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.

5 / STROKE DEVELOPMENT Students in stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.

A / WATER DISCOVERY Parents accompany children in stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.

1 / WATER ACCLIMATION Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming.

4 / STROKE INTRODUCTION Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.

6 / STROKE MECHANICSIn stage 6, students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.

3 / WATER STAMINA In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

SWIM BASICS

SWIM STROKES

Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence- building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.

Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills:

• Swim, float, swim—sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit

• Jump, push, turn, grab

Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

HAVE MORE QUESTIONS? Our front-desk staff is available to answer any questions about the swim lessons program.
