Where were battles fought?

Many battles were fought near forts The federal government had a number of

forts and military installation in the South. As Southern states seceded, many of them were quickly turned over by states forces.

Fort Sumter Fort Sumter, a federal fort located in

Charleston Harbor, refused to surrender to the Confederates.

The first battle was fought at Fort Sumter.

Battle of Bull Run

General McDowell led the federal troops and he led

them to Manassas Junction, at the last moment, the

Confederates reinforcements came on the battlefield and

carried the day.

could not take New Orleans The Union forces brought ships capable

of tossing large shells at forts After a week of heavy shelling, the fleet

was ordered forward and New Orleans was forced to surrender.

GettysBurg General Robert E. Lee led his Confederate

army and engaged in battle with the Union forces

The Confederates charged the Union troops but took heavy losses.

Confederate strong holds Grant made a daring move and sent his

troops south of the city After 6 weeks of fighting, the Confederate

forces surrendered

fought Thousands of soldiers lost their lives

fighting for their cause Even though the fighting was bloody, the

United States was to able to remain a country
