the Emancipation Proclamation.•Battle lasted for 12 hours (5:30 am –

5:30pm)•Battle was considered a draw.•Goal was to convince Europe the

confederacy was a legitimate country. •Union Victory

•The first urban combat in the Civil War.•This battle was fought in the streets of

Fredericksburg.•Was the beginning of a march on

Richmond by the Union troops. (the first of many)

•Was a major city of importance because of the southern ports and was the mouth of the Mississippi.

•This battle assisted the union in gaining control over New Orleans and was able to take control of most of lower Mississippi.

•Adopted from Winfield Scott’s Anaconda plan to blockade and deprive the south of their resources.

•Union Victory

Battle of Hampton Roads (Iron Clads)•First battle using Ironclad warships. The

purpose of the battle was for the Union to blockade trade routes for the Confederate.

•This battle was a draw.•The blockade of southern ports continued.

take a Northern city.•Infamous “Pickett's Charge” on the last

day of battle will be the deciding factor of the Winner.

Gettysburg Address a few months later.

The Battle of Chickamauga •Union was working towards capturing

Chattanooga, TN.•There was a large Railroad hub in

Chattanooga.• If the union gained control of this railroad they

would have access to the railroads in the part of the country and would be able to transport troops and supplies to the south.

•Later will lead to the Battle of Chattanooga.•Large amount of casualties.•Confederate Victory

•Lasted almost 10 month campaign.•Petersburg was a major supply hub to the

confederate army led. •Grant and his men were on the road to

capturing Richmond (CSA capital) which they had tried several times.
