Most of the time, the value of dollar is increased against the Bangladeshi currency. So

while exporting the industrial potatoes the Bangladeshi agro industries have to pay a lot

of local currency against dollar. Cause Bangladesh can only deal with dollar. That’s why

the market can’t reach that level as it is expected.

5.0 Brand Profile

5.1 Industrial Potatoes

Industrial Potatoes - Business for the future

Potato farming for industrial use is gaining a momentum, opening scope for the existing

and prospective flakes, starch and chips makers to get supply of raw materials to boost

operation.

Market insiders said a number of business houses and big farmers have already started

scaling up their stocks and production of industrial potato seeds to cash in on the demand

at processing factories at home and abroad.

“It has a huge business prospect. We are multiplying seeds of industrial potato for

domestic potato processing factories and export.

Starting production of such a seed variety, Lady Rosetta, in around 50 acres of land in

fiscal 2008-09, Global planted the variety in 235 acres in Thakurgaon and Denajpur

district in the current fiscal year.

“The variety we are growing has 25 percent dry matter content. It's higher than the

existing varieties'. Most varieties here contain less than 20 percent of dry matter content,

which is not good for processing,” he said.

Dry matter content of potatoes is of key importance for the texture of the final product.

Also yield and fat content are affected by dry matter content.

Operators said processing factories need higher dry content to get better output.

In Bangladesh more than 50 lakh tones of tuber are produced every year, but the available

varieties such as Diamond are economically less viable for making flakes, starch and

chips, said processors and seed marketers.

“It requires seven to eight kilograms of potato of Diamond variety to make one kg of

flakes, starch or chips because it has less dry content.

Mr. Belayet Hossain said the company is witnessing a rising demand for the seeds of

processed variety potato since it has started marketing in 2008.

The seed marketers said potato plantation for industrial use is on the rise in the districts

such as Rangpur, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Joypurhat, Rajshahi, Madaripur, Faridpur and

Munshiganj.


“Such farming is gradually picking up. But it was quite tough to convince people to

cultivate industrial varieties of potato three to four years ago,” said Anwarul Huq, owner

of Blue Moon International, which has been marketing industrial varieties of potato seeds

since 2006.

“Our sales (of these seeds) grew eight times to around 400 tones in three years to 2009,”

he said. “Demand for the processed potato varieties will continue to rise because of

increasing consumption at the factories.”

The seed marketers and some growers said cultivation of potato for industrial use also

offers promise of higher price compared to the potato varieties used for household

consumption.

Ibrahim Khalil, a farmer in Munshiganj, said he has received higher price for cultivating

potato for industrial use. Some factories and exporters are contacting me for such

potatoes, he said.

“It has saved me from losses this year. Had I cultivated potato, such as of Diamond

variety, for household consumption, I would have incurred losses due to fall in price this

year,” said Khalil who planted processed variety of potato in 50 acres in the immediate

past season.

Khalil said he expects to grow potato in 200 acres next year.

“Increased farming of potato for industrial use will make our business easier,” said

Mahbubul Alam, general manager of Kashem Food Products Ltd, which is set to enter

domestic chip market shortly.

“Apart from export potential, the cultivation will help the farmers get a guaranteed

market as we, the processors, will buy a certain amount of potato from them every year to

run our factories,”

8.0 Origin of the report:

The following Internship report is a requisite for the completion of the MBA internship

program of IUBAT-International University of Business Agriculture and Technology. It

is a 9 credit hour course with duration of 12 weeks. This report was in the making for

Prof. Dr. M Alimullah Miyan, Chair, College of Business Administration, IUBAT. The

primary goal of the internship is to provide a smooth transition from the student life to the

corporate world.

As an intern, I worked in the Global Agro Resources Incorporation for 12 weeks. As an

intern, I had the opportunity to do different types of tasks; especially I participated in

industrial potatoes marketing activities of the company which broadened my perception

about a company’s operation. During this period, I used my observation and gained

experience about various marketing functions.

During my internship, I was placed under the department of marketing of the Global

Agro Resources Incorporation and I worked under the Manager Mr. Insaniat Sanny.

There I was constantly in touch with the company’s clients where I got a chance to

observe the clients’ behaviors and listen to all their demand. This point was beneficial for

me.

export service that established in 2001. Now a days this firm is stepped to professional

agro export service in the field of agro based products, all kinds of survey works,

property development and consultancy service, and factory building and super version

and supply of quality and skilled Personnel to the construction industry. Now this firm is

leading as an agro export company.


8.1 Report Preview:

The report mainly contains two parts. The organizational part given the idea about the

Global Agro Recourses Incorporation’s historical background, different departments, and

functions of the marketing department. There is a literature review and a work report that

mainly discusses about my experience at the company. There is also a part about product

entry data coding option has been used at the initial stage. Parametric and non-

10.0 Findings

By conducting company’s employee, I have found that most of the employees are

agree that Bangladeshi environment is appropriate for cultivating the Industrial

Potato.

Maximum Bangladeshi people are don’t know about this categorical potato.

At present time our agriculture is depend on technology base.

A large amount of our economy depends on the agricultural sector.

Industrial Potato is a export quality product.

One of the mejor important thing that Industrial Potato is a important source for

developing our economy.

Here research findings that the Industrial Potato is an another major food items in

the Bangladesh.

Here find out that the permission of cultivating is a lengthy process from

Bangladeshi Government.

Here find out that the product price is high in the local market.

Industrial Potato is not available in the market.

By conducting the research I have found that Bangladesh have lack of instrument

for processing this product.

From data analysis it has established that the industrial potato is a most valuable

product for Bangladesh economy.

Global Agro Resource Incorporation is trying to establishment this product

market in locally.

This company is not a limited company. When it will be limited company then

they have more opportunity for doing something people, society.

This type of business is seasonal business because this product is season base

product..

10.1 Recommendation


As per earnest observation some suggestions for the improvement of the situation are

given below:

When we know about the opportunity of industrial potato market in Bangladeshi

environmental perspective then then we should establiesh this product.

Global Agro should be more conscious about the promotional activities for capturing

the local market. They should carry out aggressive marketing campaign to attract

clients. They can give advertisements in television also because our people still

unknown about this type of product.

Counseling with each and every employee for generating new ideas and improving

this cetagorical product market level.

Since this product business is a relaiable source for economically development then

our government and gro business company must be conscious.

The Bangladesh government should get the steps for establishing the industrial potato

local market by the agro base company and give the permission easily for producing

this product.

Need to arrange an advertising budget, because advertisement can be more attractive.

The company consider the pricing system. If the pricing is being low or nearest of

table potato then the people would be ecourged.

In the top level of this company has poor working environment because it is a

propitorship company and they terminate the employee without coase in off season.

This system is hamparing the emplyees mind set up for working. So need to come

out with some steps that can create a proper working environment.


10.3 Conclusion

Since establishment, Global Agro Resources Incorporation have started with a view to

export oriented product service. Now the company is stepped to professional export

service in the field of export base market in all kinds of agro products. Factory building

and super version and supply of quality and skilled Personnel to the construction

industry.

The company brings the agro seeds import from the France and Holland and then the

company cultivating this seed. On the season the company exports this product.

From my internship period I found that, on the basis of byres trust. The Global Agro

during the years has made good profit. Although the company faces little loss then they

have another opportunity from the government like as incentives. That is recover their

company loss.

I found that it is a leading agro company in Bangladesh. From my study I saw that, for

earning strong byres loyalty Global Agro has now established itself as a quality agro

export quality product service for the exporting business and this company is contributing

the government national revenue.
