Hurricane Facts

• Hurricanes are areas of low air pressure that form over oceans in tropical climate regions.

• Many hurricanes cause severe flooding.• About 90 percent of the deaths that occur during

hurricanes result from drowning in floods. • Most hurricanes in North America hit areas near

the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The warm water of the West Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico create more favourable conditions for hurricanes.

What Is A Hurricane?

• Hurricanes are large tropical storms with heavy winds. By definition, they contain winds in excess of 74 miles per hour (119 km per hour) and large areas of rainfall. In addition, they have the potential to spawn dangerous tornadoes. The strong winds and excessive rainfall also produce abnormal rises in sea levels and flooding.
