The new pump series designed to thestandard of the American PetroleumIndustry (API 685) is a furtherdevelopment with regard to safetyregulations compared to the currentlyused pumps with mechanical seal toAPI 610.

The API 685 standard defines thestandardized technology tosuccessfully implement the advantagesof sealless pump technology such asabsolute integrity, operationaldependability and reliability.

The SLM „API“ series covers the entireperformance range of single-stagecentrifugal pumps. For specialapplications, multistage pumps andpumps of high-pressure design canalso be supplied.

Quality AssuranceIt is the policy of Klaus Union to achieveadequate quality assurance for themanufacture of all products to ensurethey comply with contractual require-ments. All subsuppliers are totallycommitted to assure and achieve thecontractual requirements throughvigorous implementation of the qualityassurance program. All purchasedmaterial is repeatedly inspected forconformity on receipt and afterassembly. The quality assurance systemestablished according to latest state-of-the art principles fully complies with therequirements specified in internationalcodes and regulations.A quality assurance system that hasbeen verified and certified to DIN ENISO 9001 : 2000 warrants that the

requirements imposed by you are fullycomplied.

Applicationprofiles to API610/685Fields of Application:

The pumps of the SLM AVP and SLMNVP series are universally applicableheavy-duty process pumps withmagnet drive. They meet the highestrequirements with regard to integrity, environmental safety, and ease ofmaintenance.

The pumps are leak-free andparticularly suitable for pumping toxic, aggressive, inflammable and otherenvironmentally hazardous liquids in

• refineries• oil- and gas fields• on-/offshore plants• gas processes• the processing of liquids• the petrochemical industry• the chemical industry

Construction Features:

Construction and equipment of thesingle-stage, single-suction horizontalprocess-type centrifugal pumpscorrespond with the requirements ofthe API 685 standard. The pumps areof process-type design with radiallysplit casing and flanged-on bearingsupport.

The volute casing and the bearingsupport are fastened with theircenterline feet to the base frame.

By means of the centerline support, adverse consequences of thermalexpansion and thus misalignment ofthe coupling are avoided.

The impeller is of closed radial design.

Magnet Drive:

The magnet drive eliminates the needfor shaft passages since the motortorque is transmitted to the perfectlysealed chambers in the absence ofany mechanical contact. Thisadvanced technology involves thecentral coupling where the permanentmagnets with the same even numberof poles are alternating thus ensuringa perfect rotational symmetry.

The concentric design of the couplingsafely prevents any undesired radialand axial forces from acting on thejournal bearings.

Variation of the torque to any requiredoperational mode is made by varyingthe system diameter and its height.

Journal Bearings:

SLM AVP and SLM NVP pumps requirethe installation of a hydrodynamicjournal bearing in the liquid chamber. These are lubricated by the pumpedliquid. As a standard, the journalbearing combinations aremanufactured of pure, sintered siliconcarbide.

This material is characterized by highresistance to wear and excellentendurance.

Single-Stage Pumps:

Rate of flow:Q = 2.5 to 2500 m³/h

11 USgpm to 11000 USgpm

Delivery head:H = 6 to 200 m L.C.

Systematic designwith safety inmind

Klaus Union has taken full advantage ofover 40 years experience in the designand manufacture of magnetic drivepumps.

We fully appreciate the high safetyrequirements demanded by the marketswe serve and this is always reflected inthe design and construction of thepumps and monitoring systems.

The design and concept of thiscompletely new pumps takes fulladvantage of our experience and useswell proven techniques and technology.

Rub Ring ProtectionIn the event of journal bearing or ballbearing failure, the rub rings preventimmediate damage to the isolation shellfrom either the inside or outside. For therub rings to be effective they must beused in conjunction with an input powermonitoring arrangement on the drivemotor. (LC Controller)

Replacement of Anti-frictionBearings without Draining ofPumpBy splitting the bearing bracket intointermediate lantern and bearingsupport, wear parts (anti-frictionbearings) can be replaced withoutcostly disassembly or drainage of thepump.

Temperature SensorThe internal recirculation can bemonitored by measuring thetemperature of the isolation shell.

Load Detector (LC)This monitors the shaft power and tripsthe pump if it detects under-load causedby cavitation, flow interruption ordesynchronisation of the magnet driveor overload due to mechanical contactof the rub rings.

Secondary Sealing by CDS-SystemThe „Control Double Skin IsolationShell Monitoring“ (CDS) allows for theprovision of a defined failure signalthrough the network path between theinner and the outer isolation shells. The indication of a leakage of theinner isolation shell is effected bymeans of a manometer or a pressuremeasurement. According to the APIregulations, the pump is stillconsidered sealed and operation canbe continued with single safety.

Flush Flow MonitoringBy feeding the required flush flow ratevia the external connection at theisolation shell flange, the flush flowcan be monitored by a flowmeter. Ifthe minimum flush flow rate is lessthan specified, the pump is de-energized.

Anti-Friction BearingsBy means of a Shock PulseMeasurement (SPM), onset of anti-friction bearing failures can bedetected early. On customer’s demand, the pump will be provided withappropriate test nipples in the area ofthe anti-friction bearings.

Thermal Barrier

Journal Bearing

Flushing System

Thrust BearingLoad

The thermal barrier protects thebearing support from high liquid orheating chamber temperatures. Itworks like an air cooler providing alarge surface area for the dissipationof heat by convection. For the firsttime the thermal barrier permits theuse of close coupled pumps at highoperating temperatures.

This completely new design of wearresistant journal bearing manufacturedin SSiC is used universally across therange. The different coefficients ofexpansion of the materials used arecompensated for both axially andradially by a counter centring design. The operating range of the newbearing cartridge is from -120°C upto +350°C.

The internal recircualtion ensures thatadequate pressure is maintained at alltimes permitting the safe use of thepump even on liquids close to theirboiling point. The flush flow is takenfrom an area with reduced solids andis separated into two distinct flowpaths. Flush flow QT1 dissipates thefrictional heat generated by thejournal bearing. Flush flow QT2dissipates the heat generated by eddycurrent losses in the isolation shell. This flushing system provideds analmost constant flush flow rate andpressure even when the pump ismisused.

With the new design system the axialloads in the thrust bearings aresignificantly reduced across the entireoperating range of the pump.

Isolation Shell with SecondarySealing (CDS-System patented)The Control Double Skin Isolation Shell (CDS)completely fulfils the requirements of APIStandard 685, Section 6.8. Indication of aleakage of the inner isolation shell is effectedthrough the network path between the innerand the outer isolation shells to the controlconnection flange. A further processing of thesignals can be effected by a pressuremeasurement.
