Hi everyone,
Once again, I am starting with some bragging. I
am so proud of our school! The year three and
five students did a magnificent job with
NAPLAN, they all had such a positive attitude
and tried their best. Thank you to the families
for ensuring that everyone was at school each
day and on time; it made the process easy for us
here at school. NAPLAN reports will come out in
August.
Our amazing Concert Band performed at Fan-
fare last Sunday. Fanfare is a state-wide festival
of bands and orchestras from Queensland state
schools. Our band competed against 23 other
groups from a variety of Townsville schools. Out
of all of those, our Magnetic Island State School
Concert Band was one of only seven asked back
to perform in the Grand Final. The Grand Final
will be on June 24. In Mrs Darrigan’s words
“they rocked it!” Thank you to the parents (and
Mrs Johnson) for your collaboration and support
in getting the band students there, especially on
a weekend.
There are still many parents using the staff car-
park as a drop off zone. Please use the gates on
Mandalay to ensure the safety of our students.
It is great to see so many of our students partici-
pating in the Sporting Schools program on
Wednesday after school. Please ensure that
your children leave the school grounds straight
after the program finishes in the afternoon. We
need to ensure that all of the students get home
safely and on time.
This Friday is Under 8’s Day. If you know anyone
out in the community that is ‘under 8’ (and you
think that they would like to join us) please let
them know and invite them along. There will be
some messy activities so make sure that you
bring an art smock or a big old shirt to wear.
We look forward to seeing you on Friday from
8.45 to 10.15am.
The students (and teachers) have been smiling
beautifully in their photos today, I can’t to see
how gorgeous we all look when the published
photos arrive at school.

Student Awards
Thank you to the Year 5 students who performed a wonderful
role-play on parade this week. We will all be moving sensi-
bly and carefully around the classroom thanks to your
demonstration. In addition to our role-plays, each class has
weekly lessons on our focus to ensure all students are aware
of behavioural expectations. Teaching students how we ex-
pect them to behaviour is a vital part of establishing a posi-
tive culture for learning in our school. Shared and consistent
language is another important aspect of establishing our ex-
pectations and parents/community members can get in-
volved by using the same language we use at school. We
encourage all families and community members to be posi-
tive role-models to our students by following and reinforcing
our school rules.
Example: Possible statement: “stop running”
Encouraged language: “Are you moving sensibly and care-
fully?” or “Move sensibly and carefully, thanks.”
At Magnec Island State School we have
a posive culture for learning. This
fortnight we have a ‘Be Safe’ focus:
Move sensibly and carefully.

Last week we unfortunately
needed to postpone our
Peer Support lesson. But
leaders are well organised
and looking forward to this
week’s lesson. On Wednes-
day, in our Peer Support
groups, we will take another
look at the Bullying Triangle.
This diagram helps us to
understand the feelings of
each person involved in a
bullying situation. It also
helps us to remember how
important the behaviour of
bystanders is. In our Peer Support lessons coming up,
children will learn more about positive things they can
do as a bystander.

Dear Prep families!
It is a very exciting week as Friday is
Under 8’s Day! The event is running
from 8.45 am to 10.15 am outside the
Prep room and surrounding grounds.
Our friends from C&K are coming and
together we will acknowledge the im-
portance of learning in the early years
of a child’s life.
I am going to be sending home in read-
er folders some sound and letter book-
lets. Each child will be given a focus
letter to work on for the week – the ac-
tivities inside include handwriting, say-
ing the letter sound aloud, and colour-
ing in. The children are progressing
well with their sight words – if we can
continue to practice these at home that
would be great! Some ideas for helping
children to learn sight words are for the
children to write them as they say the
word aloud, put a copy on the fridge or
stick them to the mirror, to sound out the
letters and identify them in the books
they read.
In Science we are learning about mate-
rials and have been testing the effect of
water on materials. We will be practic-
ing making wind chimes soon for the
Science assessment this term. If you
have any materials you would like to
bring in such as shells, and small bits of
drift-wood please do – we have materi-
als at school too so this is optional.
The children seem to be bringing lots of toys
from home for show and tell – while I don’t
mind them playing with them at lunch-time
during class they must stay in bags – if you
could remind them this would be fantastic. I
also don’t want to encourage show and tell as
some children may feel left out should they
not have items to bring in. If you could also
note to follow Queensland Education policy
children are not to stay after the end of day
bell and play at school.
Thank-you and have a lovely week!
Sophie.

Don’t forget to join us for
Under 8s Day this Friday 25th
May at 8.45 am to 10.15 am.
The week we will begin out new Eng-
lish unit which explores poetry. In
maths we are investigating 2D and 3D
shapes.
We are having fun in Science. This
week we folded or rolled paper in dif-
ferent ways to try to increase it’s
strength so it would hold a large book.
We succeeded.
Under Eights morning is on Friday.
Please send an old t-shirt or shirt with
your child to protect their uniform
when they are busy with messy art ac-
tivities.
Thank you.
What a fantastic time of year to be a gardener,
everything is growing beautifully but not with-
out the help of the students of Magnetic Island.
Thanks Shelley for the help with the rock
painting for plant and herb identification, they
look great.

The past 2 weeks have been busy and I
am very proud of all students working to
the best of their ability.
In English, during Guided Reading we
are focusing finding connections within a
text; text to self, text to text and text to
world. We are also very keen to start
reading and writing some fractured fair-
ytales.
In Maths we have been looking at 2 and
3 Dimensional shapes and using the
playdough we made to make different
shapes.
All students seem to be enjoying learning
about the Earth and its continents and
countries. They have been using globes
and the internet to explore maps on a local,
regional and national scale.
It is great to see students actively engaged
in their learning and reading every night.
Keep it up.

How wonderful to be back on beautiful
Maggie Island for six weeks with the
privilege of teaching year 3. I am look-
ing forward to working with these en-
thusiastic students.
The English unit based on the book
Charlotte’s Web is well underway. The
students will be writing a persuasive
letter to complete this unit.
In maths we are covering addition and
subtraction, number stories and money. If
you have any junk mail, please save it for us.
This will help us to use real life examples to
buy items and work out change.
Please feel free to pop in to see me if you
have any questions or concerns.
Thank you, Natalie
Naonal Walk Safely to School Day (followed by a heathy breakfast)
![Page 5: Magnec Island State School...drift-wood please do – we have materi-als at school too so this is optional. The children seem to be bringing lots of toys from home for show and tell](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022041612/5e38caded6232e2cb77662d0/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
English work has moved on to listening
and analysing Asian stories. To compli-
ment this we cooked ourselves a fabu-
lous Asian food inspired lunch last Fri-
day. The children made rice paper
rolls, sushi, dahl and flatbreads.
Thanks once again to all our wonderful
helpers – Glenda, Jane, Deb, Katrina
and Ange. Our next session will be
from 10.30am to 1.00ish on Friday June
1st when we will cook foods enjoyed by
early settlers to Australia. This compli-
ments our work in history.
In Maths we are starting work on frac-
tions, and moving on to the 6x table.
It has been very interesting to watch the
growth of our grass heads in Science
over the last few weeks. We are making
a stop motion film to record what hap-
pens. We also planted sunflower seeds
last week during our kitchen garden
session, and we aim to measure and
monitor those too.
Reading and Homework: Friday after-
noon is our library borrowing time.
Homework is set every Monday to be
handed in on Fridays. Part of the expec-
tation for homework is that children read
for at least 20 minutes a day. They can
choose from a library book, home book
or class reader (these have just been
refreshed again)– whatever they enjoy
most. The key thing is that they have a
chance to do this and then share it with
you. Please note down how this is going
in the homework book.
Thank you for your help and support,

EXPERT HELP REQUEST
The children have been asked to select an endangered plant or animal to research for their Science assessment. Do you know
about any local species that you could come and talk about to them?
![Page 6: Magnec Island State School...drift-wood please do – we have materi-als at school too so this is optional. The children seem to be bringing lots of toys from home for show and tell](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022041612/5e38caded6232e2cb77662d0/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Year 5 Cat Johnson
We had some wonderful work pre-
sented for our English assessment
tasks. The advertisements that the
children composed were visually
very effective, and the language used
by some students was both highly
persuasive and effectively selected.
In addition, children needed to ex-
plain their language and multimodal
choices, and also explain their choic-
es of images. Some of the great work
that was presented has been put on
display in the classroom, and will also
be displayed in the covered area
over the next week or so. Please feel
free to come in for a look.
Our Peer Support lessons are up and
running again this week, hopefully.
Leaders are reminding their groups of
the Bullying Triangle, which is a dia-
gram we will use to help children un-
derstand the feelings of those involved
in bullying situations. Leaders will talk
about the importance of responses of
bystanders, and how these people can
have significant impact on the occur-
rence of bullying. Leaders continue to
be enthusiastic about their roles, and
most children are now realising the
great value in being well organised and
prepared ahead of time, so that lessons
flow smoothly and so that the leadership
experience is a positive one.
Homework Club will happen again this
Wednesday, so please let me know if you
wish your child to attend.
Please be sure to contact me if you have
any concerns regarding your child’s pro-
gress.

The Peer Support program is a peer
led, skills based, experienal learn-
ing program that empowers young
people to support each other and
contribute posively to society.
Years 5s have worked brilliantly for the
past two weeks. They have completed
three days of NAPLAN without their
classroom teacher and performed su-
perbly on parade to cover the school
PCL focus.
We are continuing with persuasive
writing and completing lots of work on
our Solar System. Our photos show our
moon models.
In Maths we are continuing with frac-
tions and working on money and budg-
ets.
During reading we are reading SRA
cards (does that bring back memo-
ries?) and loving it! I am enjoying my
two weeks here, thanks to a great class.
Thank you for having me.
