Bowl Water Pepper Cotton tip Dishwashing liquid Food dye (optional) Put enough water in your bowl to cover the bottom. If you have food dye, mix it with the water. Add a lot of pepper to the water. Take note of how the pepper covers all of the surface of the water. Now dip a cotton tip into dishwashing liquid, then dip into the middle of the water. What happens to the pepper? Adding the dishwashing liquid changes the water tension. The water pulls away from the dishwashing liquid. This makes it look like the pepper is running away from the dishwashing liquid. The pepper goes from covering the surface of the water, to making a ring around the edge of the water. Watch what happens when you add dishwashing liquid to water and pepper!
