They used sundials and water clocks to measure time, for time in Antiquity was an affair of the elements. Man would perfect the notion of measuring time through the millennia, and today new apogees are being reached through the melding of complicated watch movements with the arts: painting, enamelling, gemstone cutting and for the watch repeaters, chiming music, and with some watch faces adorned with perpetual calendars, pandas or the petals of a flower. Watches are traditionally honoured in Paris during the month of November with two tradeshows, the Salon Belles Montres running from November 29th to December 1st and the Les Montres show being held from November 7th to the 9th, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. When Richard Mille presented the Tourbillion RM 026 at the SIHH in Geneva in 2011, the house brought together this notion of fine watch making and fine jewellery. This year the watch, the Tourbillion RM 26-01, limited to 30 pieces, features a giant panda, the global ambassador for endangered species. Sculpted in 18K white gold, the panda is set entirely in diamonds and black sapphires. My watch making philosophy is to fashion watches that will still work 200 years from now, explains Franois-Paul Journe. A case in point is F.P. Journes beautiful red gold Chronomtre Optimum, which symbolises the essence of precision in a wristwatch. Its constant-force winder has been patented, as has its EBHO high-performance bi-axial escapement. This is a two-wheel direct impulse escapement that functions without oil. Heading to Juneau, Alaska or Rio via Noumea? Tissots Heritage Navigator watch is just what you need. This year, Tissot is celebrating its 160th anniversary with this model first created in 1953 to celebrate the brands 100th anniversary. Its look is vintage but its the perfect tool for the modern businessman with its 24 time zones, which correspond to the capital cities indicated on its face. Omega has been pioneering innovative watch making since 1848 and has shown a taste for adventure. The house introduced the first divers watch in 1932 and its Speedmaster historically landed on the moon strapped to Buzz Aldrins spacesuit back in the summer of 1969, becoming in all likelihood the first watch to go lunar. The Speedmaster is still on the agenda each year and there are daintier adventures for the ladies like the Ladymatic in red gold. JEANRICHARD takes its name from a well- known figure in the world of watch making, Daniel Jeanrichard who developed the industry in the Neuchtel Mountains all the way back in the 17th century. His legacy lives on today through great time pieces for both men and women like the Ladies Terrascope, which stands out with its cushion-style case with diamonds encircling the white dial version and amethysts the violet dial. Parmigiani Fleurier is honouring Brazil with its Pershing Samba Madeira watch whose vibrant colours and swaying complications bring to mind the emblematic dance. The house has just won the European Watch of the Year Award for ladies with its Tonda 50 set in mother of pearl. Meanwhile, Parmigiani Fleurier has joined forces with the prestigious French house of Lalique to create the table clock 15 days. The limited edition clock is encased in crystal and adorned with Laliques characteristic motif, the Coutard fountain, a spray of water droplets designed by Ren Lalique in 1935. The clock is a patented horological innovation and an ingenious key system enables the user to wind the clock and also see how much autonomy remains. My watch making philosophy is to fashion watches that will still work 200 years from now - Franois- Paul Journe WP NOV watches FINAL.indd 11 15/10/2013 15:44 12. 12 WHERE PARIS I OC TOBER 2013 [ N O V E M B E R I N P A R I S ] Both time and feathers are fleeting and delightful with flighty feathers appearing in the faces of The Dior VIII Grand Bal Plume collection. Launched initially in 2011, the Grand Bal collection or the Dior Ball pays tribute to the appreciation the founder of the house had for parties. The complications in the watch took 18 months to fashion to house the functional oscillating weight of the automatic movement on the top of the dial whose undulating sway recalls the swirl of a ball gown. Rolex, always on the cutting edge, has brought out an exciting array of new watches in its Oyster collection featuring a blend of technological innovations and aesthetics, witness the Lady-Datejust Pearlmaster. The new models, all COSC certified chronometers for their precision, continue the constant Rolex quest for perfection. Hublot became the first luxury watch brand to fuse precious metals with materials like natural rubber. This concept, known as the Art of Fusion, combined with the original design in the shape of a porthole (hublot in French) became the houses trademark, evident today in the Big Bang Gold Zebra Bang watch of red gold, diamonds, spinels and black rubber. For over 200 years Girard-Perregaux has been fashioning exceptional watches, producing 16,000 timepieces a year. Its Haute Horlogerie Department manufactures timepieces with complications like the minute repeater, the perpetual calendar, the split-seconds chronographs and the tourbillion. Its Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges and its superb architecture is one of the houses emblematic pieces. The house of Zenith has been bringing fine watches to the world for over 150 years now. In the 19th century, under the guidance of the visionary Georges Favre-Jacot, the company found its name when after having perfected a movement Georges Favre-Jacot went out into the night sky and saw a giant constellation turning around the Pole star. He decided to call his new movement and its manufacture Zenith, the word that designates the highest point reached in the heavens by a celestial body. The brands first ladies Pilot, the Pilot Montre Aronef, draws its inspiration from the watches and onboard instruments that Zenith produced in the early days of aviation. Carl F. Bucherer designs and produces its own movements in-house, manufacturing and distributing exclusive watches for ladies and gentlemen, among them the stunning Alacria RoyalRose for women brought out in a limited edition of 125 pieces. The dial is nestled in a mass of entwining flowers and time itself seems to bloom from within. And on a musical note, talking watches are in the forefront. A. Lange & Shne, the Saxon in a world of Swiss manufacturers, brings us the Grand Complication. Only six pieces of this complicated and exclusive model have been made. Its chiming mechanism with a grand and small strike, minute repeater, split second chronograph with a minute counter and jumping seconds are all highlighted by a perpetual calendar with a moon-phase display. The watch rings with a sound of inimitable purity through two carefully hand- wrought gongs that produce the seductive sounds of the hour and quarter-hour strikes. The watch, in rose gold and which carries a seven-figure price tag, was mounted and dismounted twice to perfect its accuracy. And another addition to the sounds of watches is the beautiful Bird Repeater from Jaquet Droz, the Numerus Clausus fashioned in only eight pieces. Its dial is hand engraved with painted mother of pearl and a black onyx centre while the lovely birds on the face are hand engraved and painted. The dazzling design includes a case and hands of 18-carat red gold and the movement is a Jaquet Droz RMA88 minute repeater and hand winding. The minute repeaters are a legacy of the 17th century when it cost a small fortune to light up a home and subsequently see what time it was. Minute repeaters literally tell the time with their sounds. This year, the house of Jaeger-LeCoultre is celebrating its 180th anniversary in style, notably with among others the Grande Reverso Ultra Thin Duoface Blue. The watch unveiled by the manufacture embodies the very essence of a watch with a swivelling case. Over the years ...today new apogees are being reached through the melding of complicated watchmovements with the arts ParmigianiFleuriersPershingSambaMadeira (topphoto);Girard-PerregauxsTourbillon withThreeGoldBridges(bottomphoto); JaquetDrozsBirdRepeaterNumerus Claususof8(oppositepage) WP NOV watches FINAL.indd 12 15/10/2013 15:45 13. www.wheretraveler.com 13 the sporty model has taken on a decidedly feminine look as well. The Grand Reverso Ultra Thin Duoface Blue is available exclusively in Jaeger-LeCoultre boutiques. And there is also the spectacular Montre Extraordinaire La Rose whose sparkling gemstone moveable rose petals conceal the watch face while the Rendez-Vous Celestial offers a journey into the heavens with its spectacular constellation dancing upon a field of lapis lazuli. The haute jewellery House of Mellerio dits Meller, which is also celebrating a birthday, it is 400 years young this year, presents a sporty and elegant model La Club for men, which is available in yellow, rose or grey gold with a face bearing Roman numerals. The Manufacture of Haute Horlogerie Piaget continues to astound with its mastery of ultra-thin watch making. The Piaget Altiplano Automatic Gem-Set Skeleton is the worlds thinnest automatic diamond-set skeleton watch. The timepiece is entirely gem set including the entire gold main plate and the functional parts. Meanwhile, Perrelet has been fashioning watches since the late 18th century. Its founder Abraham-Louis Perrelet was one of the most popular master watchmakers of his time. He produced perpetual calendar escapements, he invented an automatic watch that wound itself automatically in a persons pocket from the movement made while walking, explains the companys history. Today, the company perpetuates this heritage of traditional luxury watch making with its Turbine Chrono and the limited edition Turbine Snake in honour of the Year of the Snake with the snake fashioned in black mother of pearl from Polynesia and features a ruby eye. Some newcomers on the scene include the house of haute jewellery Pasquale Bruni that brought out its first collection of watches, Flower Time, in white gold and paved with white diamonds. The limited edition numbered watch was brought out in 46 pieces for the 46 years of the career of the houses founder Pasquale Bruni. Bucherer, the Swiss watch manufacturer and distributor of high end watches, showcases the very best of timepieces from the leading brands in a floor space of 2,200 square metres just a short stroll from the Place de lOpra. Meanwhile, Wempe, the high-end German jeweller, offers an elegant and intriguing universe devoted to timepieces and jewellery just up from the Place de la Concorde, while situated on the elegant Place Vendme, Dubail offers an exceptional, elegant world in which to discover fine and prestigious timepieces. In Paris, MisterChrono is a worthy haven for watch and timepiece related articles, including winders, cases and safes. Founded by Pierre-Yves Martinez, a watch lover himself, the upscale boutique offers a host of items from prestigious brands and houses a specialised watch bookshop. The Atelier du Bracelet Parisien is specialised in made-to-measure and customised watchbands and high-end leather straps for which the customer can even choose the part of the leather skin to be used in their strap. The art and culture. The romance. The food. Jazz. Fashion. What makes Paris different from any other city in the world? Paris is a big interactive outdoor museum that we have the privilege to visit every day. What are your favourite things about the city? Riding the Batobus up and down the Seine, the street markets on a Sunday morning, walking our dog and biking in Bois de Boulogne, and having a hot chocolate at Caf Flore after taking a tour of the Saint- Germain art galleries. Can you tell us some of your favourite spots in Paris that you have organised photo shoots at? The banks of the River Seine, the terraces in Saint-Germain, Pont Alexandre III and the Tuileries Garden. As photographers are you constantly looking at the city as a huge studio that you can take photos in? Of course, we are always looking for new original spots to use for our photos. Each walk we take we discover a tree, a bench, an alley, a corner, or a different angle for the wonderful scenery this magical and generous city offers us. What projects have you recently worked on? I think we would take up dozens of pages talking about our creative background, because we have been blessed to work with incredible teams and develop mesmerising projects. Most recently, we held the exhibition Crowning Heads Machine in Arles this summer, during the Rencontres dArles Festival, with the black thematic centred upon. We tried to imagine a journey of self-knowledge, across places where thoughts intertwine between floating and oblivion, dreaming and rebirth as well as truth, acceptance and reinvention So, the end result is a series of photos that represents a personal one on one encounter with our personal fear and an urge to leave and make way for harmony, peace and inner serenity. We hope to show it in Paris, too very soon. What is one of the most difficult photo shoots you have worked on? Thankfully weve worked with such amazing people that each shoot was more an exciting creative challenge to us. We think its very important to pay attention to every single detail, so thats why we prepare everything thoroughly in advance and we know exactly what we want and dont want to do. Are there things you prefer taking photos of more than others? No, each new job is a real challenge for us. We just love to meet new people and work with different teams and we are very open to any new ideas. For tourists who are looking to discover something romantic and well hidden in Paris where would you send them? The beautiful gardens of the Rodin Museum! In your eyes, what part of Paris captures the real spirit of the City of Love and where do you recommend people go to watch a perfect sun set? A romantic dinner cruise on the River Seine could be the perfect way to feel the real spirit of the City of Love, while enjoying the sunset in different wonderful angles. Photographers Dana and Stphane Maitec, who hail from Romania and who have worked for internationally renowned magazines, have shot beautiful photos around the world and in Paris. The talented duo recently sat with Where and talked photography, Paris and the perfect sunset. Where would you recommend they go for the best shot and angle? Trocadro at the sunset! Where do you recommend visitors to the city go for a view of the city? The skyline of Paris seen from the 6th floor at the Centre Pompidou, its a must! What is your favourite museum and gallery in Paris? The Grand Palais for all the fantastic exhibitions, fairs and events, and the 104 Arts Centre and Performance Space. Are there any photography galleries that you prefer in Paris? Polka Galerie, Galerie Polaris, Russian Tea Room and Galerie Hlne Bailly. Describe your perfect day in Paris? The perfect day for us has to be a sunny Sunday starting with a long, leisurely stroll around the Vanves flea market. Later we would take a nap on the grass, after having a picnic in the Jardin des Tuileries. We would spend the rest of the day just getting lost for a while in the streets in the Marais, trying to see through the windows whats new on the walls in the art galleries or design boutiques. His body of work is unique, extraordinary and plethoric, producing over 150,000 negatives. The Mona Bismarck Foundation, in an exhibition entitled Yousuf Karsh: Icons of the 20th Century, is showcasing some 70 of his most gripping portraits including those of Elizabeth Taylor and Charles de Gaulle. The vibrant world of Seville, where the artist sojourned from 2009 to 2013 during the 18th leg of his journey around the planet, unfolds in the Right Bank Galerie Louis Carr & Cie. One of the major artists of the Figuration Libre (Free figuration) movement, a French art movement born in the 1980s, Di Rosa infuses his pictorial vision with local cultures and craft traditions, creating a singular body of work that is pleasant, poetic and powerful. The globetrotting artist, who was born in the southern French city of Ste in 1959, remains one of the most renowned of his generation. P.V. Through Nov 30 10 ave Messine (8th), 01 45 62 57 97 HEART ART Metaphorical landscapes at times calm, at times tormented come into view in a series of paintings representing the heart by the French artist Nomie Rocher. She began the series, Ex Voto, after someone close to her had a heart attack. She uses cardiac rhythms as an inspiration for the works of incandescent red, mineral blue, sea green dotted with tiny skulls, underscoring the hearts dual symbol of life and death. Nomie Rocher, who collaborated with Damien Hirst in London for a year, has had solo shows and participated in collective shows in galleries in France and Mexico. P.V.
