Il vivace passato storico e culturale diGemona del Friuli ha lasciato le pro-prie tracce nelle testimonianze arti-

stiche che le hanno regalato maestri scul-tori, architetti e scultori. Attraverso Porta Udine, appartenente allaprima cerchia muraria, si entra nell'anticocentro cittadino, dove sorge il Duomo diSanta Maria Assunta, uno dei monumen-ti religiosi medioevali più importanti dellaregione. Di pianta basilicale a tre navate,è il risultato della ristrutturazione di unachiesa preesistente, operata dai maestriGiovanni e Giovanni Griglio a partire dal1290. In esso si realizza una mirabilefusione tra elementi dello stile romanico egotico, interpretati dall'ingegno di artistilocali. Colpisce il visitatore il movimentodella facciata: il portale romanico, nellacui lunetta si celebra il Giudizio Finale; lacolossale statua di San Cristoforo alta bensette metri e posta lì a proteggere i vian-danti; l'elegante gotica Galleria dei ReMagi nella quale sono collocate nove sta-tue raffiguranti scene dell'Epifania e losplendido rosone centrale. Gravementedanneggiato dal sisma del 1976, oggi ècompletamente risorto, ma all'interno neconserva la memoria nell'emozionante

The lively historical and cultural pastof Gemona del Friuli has left itsmark in the works created by scul-

ptors, architects and artists over the years. Porta Udine in the first ring of city walls leadsto the old city centre and the Cathedral(Duomo) of Santa Maria Assunta, one ofthe most important medieval buildings in theregion. It has a basilica-style layout, with anave and two aisles and, what we see todayis the restoration of an existing church, star-ted by master masons Giovanni and GiovanniGriglio in 1290. It has a fine mix of theRomanesque and Gothic styles interpretedby skilled local craftsmen. Visitors will beimpressed by the decorations of the facade,the Romanesque portal with its plant motifs,and lunette celebrating the Last Judgement,the colossal seven-metre high statue of St.Christopher protecting travellers and the ele-gant Gothic Gallery of the Three Kings withits nine statues with scenes from the epipha-ny and splendid central rose window. Badlydamaged in the 1976 earthquake, today ithas been completely restored, but still retainsstriking evidence of the event in the angle ofthe powerful pink marble columns suppor-ting the aisles. The Cathedral contains anumber of small chapels and several preciousworks of art. These include the original bap-tismal font made from a Roman funeralmonument, a fine gilded wooden altarpiecefeaturing episodes from the Old and NewTestaments (1391), a moving Pietà orVesperbild from the 15th century and nume-rous paintings and sculptors by local and

inclinazione delle poderose colonne in marmo rosa che sostengo-no le navate. Il duomo è impreziosito da numerose opere d'arte:l'originale fonte battesimale ricavato da un monumento funebreromano: una bellissima ancona lignea dorata raffigurante episodidell'Antico e del Nuovo Testamento (1391), una toccante Pietà oVesperbild del XV secolo; numerose opere pittoriche e scultoree diartisti locali, italiani e stranieri di epoche diverse. Dal Duomo, sullacui piazzetta si affaccia Casa Gurisatti (sec. XV) con la sua grazio-sa trifora ad archi trilobi, sede della Cineteca del Friuli, percorren-do via Bini, si giunge al Palazzo Comunale. Via Bini è la tipicastrada medioevale sulla quale si affacciano edifici storici ornati daportali, rientranze, piazzette e portici. È possibile scoprirvi i vario-pinti lacerti di affreschi risalenti ai sec. XV-XVI, i terrazzini in stileneogotico della Casa D'Aronco, il palazzo che fu dei nobili Elti(sec. XV), oggi sede del Civico Museo, di mostre estemporanee edel locale Ufficio Turistico, le bifore e gli affreschi trecenteschisulla facciata in cotto di Casa Antonelli. Il Palazzo Comunale, sitoin Piazza del Municipio, è un elegante edificio rinascimentale delprimissimo Cinquecento nella cui loggia sono conservati alcuni deirari reperti di epoca romana del Gemonese. Gli edifici che diparto-no da Piazza del Municipio, in senso opposto a via Bini, sono inte-ressanti costruzioni moderne. Tra esse spiccano la sede dell'ExBanca Popolare di Gemona realizzata dall'architetto LucianoGemin su idea di Carlo Scarpa. Proseguendo si incontra la gradi-nata monumentale della Chiesa della Beata Vergine delle Grazie,simbolo del terremoto e della distruzione, i cui resti (fine XV seco-lo) sono stati sistemati a parco lapideo. A dominare la città dalcolle, il Castello, le cui origini risalgono probabilmente ad uncastelliere celtico del 500 a.C., trasformato poi dai Romani incastrum con torre di avvistamento e di segnalazione. Fortificatosotto il dominio longobardo, verso i primi del Mille, fu radicalmen-te ricostruito dai Signori di Gemona, divenendone la loro residen-za prima e la dimora del capitano patriarcale poi. Nel 1381 era

Via Bini, dominated by the Castle (still undergoing renova-tion), leads to the Palazzo Comunale (town hall).Via Bini is a typical medieval road – a narrow, winding commercial road– lined by historic buildings packed closely together with decorativedoorways, niches, squares and porticos. Visitors should look out for themulti-coloured fresco fragments dating back to the 15th-16th centu-ries, the neo-gothic terraces of Casa D’Aronco, the palazzo of the nobleElti family (15th century), which now houses the Civic Museum, andthe twin lancet windows and fourteenth-century frescos on the terra-cotta facade of Casa Antonelli. The Palazzo Comunale (town hall), located in Piazza del Municipio, isan elegant early sixteenth-century Renaissance building with a loggiacontaining some rare Roman remains from the area around Gemona.The buildings leading away from Piazza del Municipio, in the oppositedirection to Via Bini, are interesting modern designs. They include theseat of the former Banca Popolare Antonveneta designed by architectLuciano Gemin based on an idea of Carlo Scarpa, and the fine post-modern building with a terraced loggia by architect Alberto Antonelliand characteristic clock. The centre of Piazza Garibaldi features a newfountain. This complex construction has waterfall pools (designed byarchitect Gianpaolo Della Marina). Not far away is the Church of SantaMaria di Fossale with its seventeenth-century carved gilded and pain-ted wooden altars. Further on are the monumental steps of the Churchof the Beata Vergine delle Grazie, the remains of which (late 15thcentury) have been made into a park area. The city centre is overlookedby its castle, standing high up on a hill. It is quite likely that it was ori-ginally an ancient Celtic stronghold dating back to 500 b.c., which theRomans converted into a defensive construction, with a watchtower. Ata later date, the castle was fortified by the Longobards in the early yearsof the 11th century and then completely renovated by the lords of

Una terza torre, era stataristrutturata e recuperata nel 1800 ed fino al 1967 era adibita adedificio carcerario. Dopo una lunga attesa, sono ripartiti i lavori direcupero per il cui completamento serviranno alcuni anni, masaranno gli stessi lavori di ricostruzione, con le particolari meto-dologie adottate, a rappresentare di per sé stessi un momento diinteresse e di attrazione, oltre alla vista impagabile di cui si puògià godere dagli splendidi giardini. Tra gli edifici di interesse storico artistico della cittadina va sicu-ramente annoverato il Santuario di Sant’Antonio, il più anticoluogo di culto al mondo dedicato al Santo. Andato distrutto acausa degli eventi sismici del 1976, ricostruito in linee architetto-niche moderne su progetto dell'architetto Domenico Bortolotti,conserva al suo interno i ruderi della chiesetta duecentesca erettadal Santo stesso in onore della Madonna. A colpire il visitatoresono le opere dell'artista udinese Arrigo Poz: l'enorme simbolicomosaico della parete di fondo raffigurante il Mondo e l'Universoattraversati da una meteora simboleggiante la luce di Cristo, laCappella Penitenziale, una serie di splendide finestre di un vivacecromatismo raffiguranti figure di Santi dell'ordine francescano e losplendido rosone laterale realizzato “a mosaico” raffigurante ilCantico delle Creature di S. Francesco. Da segnalare anche la visi-ta alla cella del Santo, la preziosa collezione di ex voto ed il Museo“Renato Raffaelli” con opere pittoriche del Seicento.Allontanandosi dal centro storico si arriva ad Ospedaletto, dovericordiamo l'antico Ospedale di Santo Spirito, accanto all'omoni-mo Priorato e la Chiesetta di Ognissanti: un piccolo gioiello orna-to da affreschi risalenti al XIV ed al XV secolo, venuti alla luce coni crolli causati dal terremoto del 1976.

Gemona, who made it their personal dwelling, before it became thePatriarch’s residence. As far back as !381, the building had already beenunsafe, and probably suffered serious damage from the earthquake of1511. Up until 1976, of the whole medieval complex, only the centraltower (the bell tower or clock tower with a community bell added in1874) still remained standing along with the ruins of the south-western tower. A third tower was restored and recovered in 1800, follo-wing which it was used as a prison until 1967. After a long period ofinactivity, restoration work on the castle has finally recommenced andit will take several years to complete the project. However, the recon-struction work itself, and the particular methods adopted, represent afeature of interest and attraction, together with the extraordinary viewto be admired from the splendid gardens. Buildings of historic and artistic interest in the town have to include theSanctuary of S. Antonio, the world’s oldest place of worship dedicatedto St. Anthony. After its destruction by the earthquake of 1976, it wasrebuilt in a modern style to designs by architect Domenico Bortolottiand now shelters the ruins of the thirteenth-century church built by thesaint in honour of Our Lady.Visitors will be impressed by the work of Udine artist Arrigo Poz - theenormous symbolic mosaic on the far wall depicts the World andUniverse traversed by a meteor symbolising the light of Christ, thePenitential Chapel, a series of splendid windows in bright colours withfigures of Saints from the Franciscan order and the splendid side‘mosaic’ rose window of the St. Francis’ Canticle of the Creatures. Alsoworth visiting are the Saint’s Cell, the precious ex voto collection andthe “Renato Raffaelli” Museum with seventeenth-century paintings.If we leave the historic centre behind us and head north, we come toOspedaletto, with the ancient Hospital of Santo Spirito, next door tothe Priorate of Santo Spirito and Little Church of Ognissanti, a gemdecorated with frescoes dating back to the 14th and 15th centurieswhich came to light as a result of the damage caused by the earthqua-ke of 1976.

storiche ed artistiche salvate e recuperate – come documentato nellaMostra fotografica dopo i sismi del 1976: il Duomo, il PalazzoGurisatti, la Chiesa di Santa Maria di Fossale, Casa Antonelli e iPalazzi di Via Bini, il Palazzo municipale, i resti della Chiesa delleGrazie, il Convento di Sant’Antonio, le Chiese di San Rocco, diOgnissanti a Ospedaletto e di Sant’Agnese in Monte, e le nuovearchitetture che qualificano il centro ricostruito.

Museo Civico - Palazzo EltiI Museo Civico è ospitato in quella che, fin dal XIV secolo, fu la piùprestigiosa residenza gemonese, appartenuta dal ’500 alla famigliaElti. L’esposizione accoglie opere rinascimentali e barocche – recupe-rate dalle Chiese comunali di Santa Maria delle Grazie e di SanGiovanni – di artisti friulani e veneti (Cima da Conegliano, Pellegrinoda San Daniele, Pomponio Amalteo, Jacopo Negretti detto Palma ilGiovane, Giovanni Battista Tiani) e di artisti oltralpini (il Maestrodella pala di Sant’Anna, Franz J. Spiegler, Paul Troger, Martin J.Schmidt detto Kremserschmidt, dalla Collezione Fantoni-Baldissera).Le opere più recenti sono di artisti friulani e gemonesi. In Palazzo Eltihanno sede anche l’Archivio Storico della Comunità e la BibliotecaGlemonense.

Civic Museum - Palazzo EltiThe Civic Museum is housed in what used to be the most prestigiousprivate residence of Gemona; dating back to the 14th century, it wasowned by the Elti family from the 16th century onwards. The exhibi-tion comprises Renaissance and Baroque works – recovered from thelocal churches of Santa Maria delle Grazie and San Giovanni – byartists of Friuli and Veneto (Cima da Conegliano, Pellegrino da SanDaniele, Pomponio Amalteo, Jacopo Negretti better known as Palmathe Young, Giovanni Battista Tiani) as well as artists from beyond theAlps(the anonymous Master of Saint Anne’s altarpiece, Franz J.Spiegler, Paul Troger, Martin J. Schmidt known as Kremserschmidt,from the Fantoni-Baldissera collection). The most recent works ondisplay are by artists from Friuli and Gemona. The HistoricalCommunity Archive and Library also have their seat in Palazzo Elti.

“The Fresco Museum” – Church of San MicheleStanding next to the former town gate of Porta Udine and occupyingwhat was once the Church of San Michele, this exhibition provides a

Michele. Si tratta di opere di anonimi pittori friulani realizzate dalTrecento al Seicento, in buona parte ritrovate e recuperate dopo ilterremoto del 1976.

Museo della Pieve e Tesoro del DuomoSituato nel Palazzo de Recalcatis (la trecentesca Canonica vecchia),il Museo accoglie opere di autori locali e italiani del XIII–XIV secoloinsieme con arredi sacri e paramenti liturgici provenienti dal Duomoe dalle altre Chiese gemonesi. Il Tesoro del Duomo comprende alcu-ne tra le più belle realizzazioni dell’oreficeria friulana del XV secoloquali l’ostensorio di Nicolò Lionello (1435), reliquiari, pissidi e crociastili, bronzi dorati e opere moderne di oreficeria sacra. La sezionededicata ai grandi corali miniati del XIII-XIV secolo custodisce ancheil più antico registro battesimale conosciuto, risalente al 1379. IlLapidario del Duomo e la Chiesa di Santa Maria di Fossale, collega-ti al Museo, conservano opere dal XIII al XVIII secolo.

Museo Renato RaffaelliSantuario di Sant’AntonioIl Museo ospita una raccolta di opere del Santuario antoniano e delConvento, con dipinti di pittori veneti e friulani e alcune presenze diautori dell’Italia centro-settentrionale. Numerose sono inoltre leopere del pittore svizzero Melchior Widmar, attivo a Gemona nellaseconda metà del XVII secolo. Tra le sculture notevole è la BellaMadonna, opera di scuola salisburghese della fine del Trecento inlegno intagliato, dorato e dipinto. Nel Museo è esposta anche unaricca raccolta di ex-voto 8 e di opere devozionali dedicate al Santotaumaturgo: i lavori più antichi risalgono alla prima metà del 1600.

These areworks by anonymous Friulian artists dating back to the period com-prised between the 14th and 17th centuries, mainly recovered andrestored after the earthquake of 1976.

Parish and Cathedral Treasure MuseumSituated in Palazzo de Recalcatis (the old 14th century rectory), thisMuseum exhibits works by XIII–XIV century local and Italian artiststogether with vestments and church plate from the Cathedral andother churches of Gemona. The Cathedral Treasure comprises someof the finest works of 19th century Friulian goldsmiths, such as theostensory by Nicolò Lionello (1435), reliquaries, pyxes and astylarcrosses, gilt bronzes and other precious sacred objects of modernworkmanship. The section dedicated to decorated choir books of the 13th and 14thcenturies also preserves the oldest christening register in existence,dating back to 1379.The Lapidarium of the Cathedral and the Church of Santa Maria diFossale, annexed to the Museum, contain works of the 13th – 18thcentury period.

Maria degli AngeliIl percorso del Museo gemonese delle Suore Francescane Missionariedel Sacro Cuore si articola in sezioni che sottolineano le tappe fon-damentali della storia della Congregazione, ma anche la vita quoti-diana delle Religiose impegnate a portare in ogni parte del mondo ilmessaggio francescano. Conserva materiali che si riferiscono allapresenza delle Clarisse a Gemona e ai Fondatori: Madre Giuseppa diGesù, duchessa di Bauffremont, e Padre Gregorio Fioravanti; racco-glie inoltre numerosissime testimonianze della vita del convento edell’attività apostolica svolta in ogni parte del mondo.

Ecomuseo delle Acque - Mulino CocconiL’Ecomuseo delle Acque del Gemonese si propone di documentare evalorizzare i siti naturali e le espressioni della cultura materiale oltreche le pratiche di vita e di lavoro, i saperi tradizionali e le produzio-ni dell’alta pianura friulana. Il Mulino Cocconi – centro di educazio-ne ambientale riconosciuto dal Ministero dell’Ambiente – sorge aOspedaletto in località Borgo Mulino ed ospita il Museo dell’Artemolitoria e il Centro di documentazione sulle Acque del Gemonese.

It preserves materials relating to the presence of the Poor Clarenuns in Gemona and that of its founders: Mother Giuseppa di Gesù,Duchess of Bauffremont, and Father Gregorio Fioravanti; it containsnumerous evidence of convent life and the apostolic activity carriedout by the order all over the world.

Ecomuseo delle Acque(Water Eco-museum)Cocconi MillThe Water Eco-museum of Gemona sets out to document andhighlight the natural sites and authentic cultural expressions of theFriulian uplands, as well as its everyday customs and workingmethods, its traditional know-how and local products. The Cocconi mill – an environmental education centre recognizedby the Ministry of the Environment – stands in Ospedaletto in thearea of Borgo Mulino and houses the Museum of Arte molitoria(milling crafts)and the Documentation Centre of Gemona Waters.

Insieme dei sotterranei scoperti dopo il 1976, quando si avvia-rono le opere di ricostruzione del sacro edificio distrutto dalterremoto; con le opere di consolidamento e ripristino statico

delle murature si vennero a creare degli spazi ipogei che sono statipoi utilizzati, su idea e progetto dell'architetto Gemonese AlbertoAntonelli e con il contributo del locale Rotary Club, come"Lapidarium" per la musealizzazione di reperti lapidei che altrimen-ti non si sarebbero potuti esporre.Il lapidario raccoglie una trentina di pietre lavorate di epoche diver-se, di pregevole fattura del periodo medievale gemonese, esposte susupporti di ferro o appese alle pareti del vano principale e dellazona di accesso.Il pezzo più antico, l’unico che non proviene dal Duomo, è una sortadi pigna riconducibile ad un monumento funebre romano, che eracollocata nel giardino della vecchia canonica. In mostra ancheframmenti in pietra delle ali degli angeli, collocati sopra le parastedella facciata del Duomo prima di essere sostituite, e parte di unabalaustra realizzata da Magister Johannes, nel 1293 (il pilastrinocon l’iscrizione è esposto nel Museo del Duomo).Il Lapidario è visitabile su richiesta rivolgendosi alla Parrocchia:tel. 0432 980608. T his is a series of underground chambers discovered in 1976,when reconstruction work was started on the sacred buildingafter its destruction by an earthquake; when consolidation

and static restoration work was carried out on the masonry, someunderground cavities were created which were then used as a“Lapidarium”, based on the concept and project of an architect fromGemona, Alberto Antonelli, aided by the contribution of the localRotary Club, for the purpose of creating a museum for stone relics thatwould have been impossible to exhibit otherwise. The lapidarium hou-ses about thirty stone artefacts dating back to different periods of theMiddle Ages, all of which are of fine workmanship and originate fromGemona, exhibited on iron stands or hung from the walls of the mainchamber and the entrance way. The oldest piece and the only one notfound in the Cathedral, is a sort of pine-cone that would seem to bepart of a Roman funerary monument, which stood in the garden of theold rectory. Among the exhibits, there are fragments of stone fromangels’ wings positioned above the parastades of the Cathedral façadebefore they were replaced, and part of a balustrade made by MagisterJohannes in 1293 (a small column with inscription is showcased in theCathedral Museum). In occasione del 35° anniversario dagli eventi sismici del 1976che colpirono il Friuli e Gemona del Friuli, con un importante eimpegnativo lavoro l'esposizione fotografica “Mostra sul

Terremoto” si è trasformata in Mostra fotografica permanente:“1976 - Frammenti di memoria”; la mostra fotografica già esisten-te è stata radicalmente trasformata, non nell'argomento esposto,quanto nel modo con il quale questo era trattato, con l'intento diaprire l'esposizione ad un più vasto pubblico, renderla facilmentecomprensibile, contestualizzarla e ambientarla. È stata rinvigorita erafforzata la visione d'insieme, il dramma del terremoto e delladistruzione, la grandezza della ricostruzione. Una sorta di viaggioche ora riesce a raccontare, non in chiave nostalgica ma propositi-

va, la Gemona di un tempo, e narra il cambiamento di una cittadinache ha “dovuto fare i conti” con la distruzione, mostrando quello cheoggi è Gemona del Friuli, rinata dopo che trentasei anni fa, fu rasaquasi completamente al suolo.La mostra è sviluppata sui due piani dell'ex galleria d'arte Babele: ilpiano terra è composto da una sezione intitolata 6 maggio 1976 eduna dedicata al terremoto del 15 settembre 1976, con le immaginiscattate nei momenti immediatamente seguenti il sisma e cheritraggono Gemona come una città fantasma, irriconoscibile. Novitàdella sezione rispetto all'allestimento precedente, le immagini a ciclocontinuo di alcuni filmati, selezionati dalla Cineteca del Friuli,anch'essi girati nei giorni successivi al terremoto. Il piano superiore,invece, è dedicato alle difficili fasi del post terremoto e della rico-struzione, a tutte le personalità locali e nazionali che hanno contri-buito attivamente alla rinascita di Gemona e del Friuli intero. Sullepareti delle varie sale sono riprodotti anche i titoli e brevi spezzonidei giornali del tempo. Un modo per ricordare la tragedia che colpì la nostra terra e la gran-de dignità, lo spirito di sacrificio e l'impegno civile con cui la gentedel Friuli ha scritto una delle più belle pagine della sua millenariastoria, trovando nelle proprie profonde radici la forza di rialzarsi e dirisorgere coralmente con una ricostruzione esemplare per partecipa-zione di popolo ed operato delle Istituzioni, conosciuta nel mondocome “modello Friuli”.

T To mark the 35th anniversary of the seismic events of 1976,which hit the Friuli region and Gemona del Friuli, an impor-tant and challenging photographic exhibition entitled

“Exhibition on the Earthquake” has been converted into a permanentphotographic exposition: “1976 – Fragments of memory”; the pre-existing photographic exhibition has been radically transformed, notwith regards to its topic, but the way in which the argument is trea-ted, moved by the intent to appeal to a wider public by making theexhibition easier to understand, contextualize and put into perspec-tive. Its overview has been revived and strengthened, with all thedrama of the earthquake and destruction, and the enormous feat ofthe reconstruction. A sort of journey that is now able to narrate theGemona that used to exist, offering suggestions for the future ratherthan nostalgic flashbacks, and tells of the changes that have takenplace in a town that has had “to come to terms” with destruction,while showing what Gemona del Friuli is today, reborn after beingalmost completely razed to the ground thirty-six years ago. The exhibition extends over the two floors of the former Babele artgallery: the ground floor is occupied by the section entitled 6 May1976 and is dedicated to the earthquake of 15 September 1976, withthe photos that were taken immediately after the event, and whichdepict Gemona as a ghost city, totally unrecognizable. What makesthis section different from the former installation is the non-stopprojection of footage selected by the Friuli film library, which werealso filmed in the days following the quake. The top floor, on the otherhand, focuses on the difficult post-quake and reconstruction phases,and all the local and national figures who actively contributed to the

The Educational Earthquake Laboratory, set up in the historicaltown centre of Gemona del Friuli by the Municipal authoritiesand the Water Eco-museum of Gemona and surrounding area

with the scientific support of the National Institute of Geophysics andVolcanology, offers a multidisciplinary learning experience on seismicphenomena, with an approach that is highly interactive and participa-tive. It consists of an exhibition trail in which complex topics areaddressed in depth (the structure of the earth, the crustal plate theory,different types of earthquakes and their origins, the instruments usedto register and measure seismic events, the geological formation ofItaly, of Friuli and the area of Gemona in particular) in a language thatis comprehensible but precise.

L e caratteristiche uniche dell’ambiente naturale che la cir-condano e le importanti vie di comunicazione che l’attraver-sano, rendono Gemona del Friuli ed il territorio circostante

un interessante punto di riferimento ed appoggio per un gran nume-ro di attività sportive. Nel corso dell’anno poi si tengono una miria-de di manifestazioni ed iniziative che, per chi ama lo sport e la natu-ra, non potranno fare a meno di destare enorme interesse. Ed è pro-prio da queste opportunità, che L’Amministrazione Comunale diGemona del Friuli, facendo leva sulla preziosa presenza in loco delCorso di Laurea triennale in Scienze Motorie e Magistrale in Scienzadello Sport dell’Università degli Studi di Udine - unici corsi universi-tari a carattere sportivo presenti in Regione - si è resa promotrice delprogetto “Gemona città dello sport e del benstare”, che punta avalorizzare l’economia e il turismo dell’area Pedemontana e dell’AltoFriuli grazie alle molte discipline sportive praticabili da un numerosempre più alto di appassionati. Il progetto ha trovato il sostegnooltre che della Regione FVG, della Provincia di Udine, dell’Universitàdegli studi di Udine, dell’Azienda Sanitaria N.3 e di ben 16 Comuni,anche di alcuni importanti sponsor privati quali Fantoni S.p.A.,Mondo S.p.A., B-Trend, Concessionaria IOB Silvano e la Cassa diRisparmio FVG.

In questo ambito territoriale la natura diviene un immenso “campoda gioco”, dove l’uomo attraverso lo sport raggiunge quelle sensa-zioni che solo chi mantiene un rispettoso e riverente rapporto conl’ambiente sa apprezzare. L’offerta sportiva è ampia e diversificata!Innumerevoli sentieri da trekking sono pronti a “sfidare” la resi-stenza e la determinazione degli appassionati, e per coloro cheamano la mountain bike c’è veramente l’imbarazzo della sceltasoprattutto sull’altopiano di Monte Prat, che offre anche l’oppor-tunità di cimentarsi nel tiro con l’arco e nell’orienteering.

interesting landmark and platform for a great number of sportsactivities. Moreover, in the course of the year, a myriad events andactivities are put on which, for all those who love sports and natu-re, are sure to be of enormous interest. Stimulated by such oppor-tunities and drawing advantage from the prestigious, locally basedthree-year Degree Course in Sports Science and Teacher training ofUdine University – the only degree course in sports studies in theregion – the Municipal Authorities of Gemona del Friuli has promo-ted the project entitled “Gemona city of sports and wellbeing”,with the intent of highlighting the economy and tourism of thepiedmont and Upper Friuli area, thanks to the numerous sportsthat may be practiced here and the increasing number of enthu-siasts. The project was supported in addition to the Friuli VeneziaGiulia Region, the Province of Udine, University of Udine, HealthAuthority N.3, and more than 16 municipalities, including someimportant private sponsors such Fantoni SpA, Mondo SpA , B-Trend, Concessionaria IOB Silvano and the Cassa di Risparmio FVG.

A mbito naturalistico interessante quello della città diGemona del Friuli e del Gemonese, che offre al visitato-re diversi spunti per momenti di relax, di svago e di tota-

le immersione in una natura ancora “vera” e protetta.Oltre a numerose attività sportive in senso stretto da poter pra-ticare, molteplici e con diverso grado di difficoltà sono i percorsiescursionistici, che vanno dai sentieri percorribili da tutti, cheportano a mete facilmente adatte anche alle famiglie con bambi-ni, fino alle cime dei monti che circondano Gemona, raggiungibi-li seguendo impegnativi e stimolanti percorsi, su terreni per gliamanti del vero trekking.

Tra gli itinerari a carattere turistico ricordiamo “Il Conoide delTorrente Vegliato”, che prevede l’attraversamento del cono dideiezione formato dal Torrente Vegliato, che si apre a ventagliosulla pianura e che è compreso tra i monti Chiampon e Cuarnan;la meta finale è Sella Sant’Agnese con la sua chiesetta, luogofrequentato e celebratissimo dai Gemonesi.

Mete molto interessanti sia dal punto di vista naturalistico, maanche storico sono il Laghetto Minisini ed il Monte Cumieli,raggiungibili anch’essi con una semplice passeggiata. Il LagoMinisini è rinato a nuova vita: grazie all’intervento di recuperorealizzato dalla Comunità Montana del Gemonese, Canal delFerro e Val Canale è stata rimossa la vegetazione e riportato inluce lo specchio d’acqua. Among the various tourist itineraries, it is worth recalling the“Conoide del Torrente Vegliato”, which involves crossing the erup-tion cone formed by the torrent known as Torrente Vegliato, whichopens up fan-like on the plain and is located between the mountsChiampon and Cuarnan; the final destination is Sella Sant’Agnesewith its little church, a place that is frequently visited and highly

e scolaresche. La zona, insieme con l’area deiRivoli Bianchi, per le sue caratteristicheambientali è ricompresa in un “Sito diImportanza Comunitaria” (SIC) ed è inseritonella “Rete Natura 2000”.

Immancabili per gli appassionati di monta-gna sono poi le escursioni verso i MontiCuarnan e Chiampon!L’itinerario al Monte Cuarnan rende possibi-le l’osservazione di interessanti fenomenigeologici e dei diversi ambienti prealpini chesi succedono al variare delle condizioni cli-matiche. Vi si trova anche la Malga Cuarnancon annesso agriturismo per una sosta risto-ratrice e rigenerante. Sulla cima del montesorge una cappella a forma di obelisco risco-struita nel 1985 e dedicata al Redentore.L’ambito è di estremo interesse anche dalpunto di vista botanico.

Il Chiampon è invece la cima più alta dellacatena montuosa che si eleva con andamen-to est-ovest tra la Sella di Sant’Agnese el’alta Val Torre. La risalita alla cima è un iti-nerario estremamente appagante, in quanto,oltre ad attraversare gli ambienti prealpinitipici, consente l’osservazione di interessantifenomeni geologici. Inoltre, nelle giornateterse, la vista è mozzafiato, potendo losguardo spaziare su gran parte delle Alpi

Also very interesting to visit, from a naturali-stic and historical point of view, are the smalllake of Minisini and Mount Cumieli, whichmay also be reached on foot. Lake Minisini hasbeen brought to light once more: thanks to arecovery project carried out by the MountainCommunity Gemonese, Canal del Ferro e ValCanale vegetation has been removed to unco-ver this stretch of water. The lake is visited byexcursionists, families and groups of schoolchildren. Together with the area of RivoliBianchi, this zone, owing to its environmentalcharacteristics, has been relisted as an“Important Site of the European Community”(SIC) and is part of the “Natura 2000 network”.Not-to-be-missed opportunities for all moun-tain enthusiasts are the excursions to MountsCuarnan and Chiampon!The route to Mount Cuarnan offers the chan-ce to observe some interesting geological phe-nomena and the succession of piedmont envi-ronments that change with the climatic condi-tions. The Malga Cuarnan is also located herewith an annexed holiday farm where visitorscan stop off for a refreshing and regeneratingbreak. Standing on the mountain top, there isan obelisk-shaped chapel that was reconstruc-ted in 1985 and dedicated to the Saviour. Theenvironment is also extremely interesting forits botanical species.

Chiampon is the highest peak of the mountain range extending in aneast-westerly direction between the Sella di Sant’Agnese and theupper Val Torre. A climb to the top of this peak is an extremely rewar-ding experience because, apart from passing through natural envi-ronments typical of the foothills, it is also possible to observe someinteresting geological phenomena. Moreover, on a clear day, there isa breathtaking view that extends over most of the eastern alps andthe Friuli plain, as far as the sea. GIOVEDÌ: la Cena Propiziatoria delle borgate partecipanti al Paliodel Niederlech, che si svolge lungo l'antica Via Bini, nel cuore delcentro storico con coreografie medievali, intrattenimenti musicalie teatrali itineranti;VENERDÌ: il Palio del Niederlech, gara fra i borghi di Gemona ispi-rata dalla tassa del Niederlech riscossa in epoca medievale dallacittà di Gemona e che ne fece le fortune nel XIV secolo;DOMENICA: proclamazione delle Dama Castellana, con la disfidaa dama, con pedine viventi, fra i vincitori del Palio ed i secondiclassificati; entrambi schiereranno la fanciulla più bella del proprioborgo. Thursday: The Conciliation Dinner of the various wards taking partin the Palio del Niederlech, which will be held along the ancientthoroughfare of Via Bini, in the heart of the historic town centre,with medieval choreography, musical entertainment and perfor-mances staged by travelling theatres;Friday: The Palio del Niederlech, a race through the old quarters ofGemona inspired by the Niederlech tax imposed in the middle ages bythe city of Gemona and which brought it prosperity in the XIV century;Sunday: Proclamation of the Chatelaine Dame, with a draughtscontest, using living draughtsmen, between the winners of the Palioand runners up; both sides will deploy the most beautiful lass oftheir ward. A partire dalle ore 9.30, ha luogo la celebrazionedell'Epifania del Tallero. Al suono dei tamburi, che caden-zano l'incedere elegante delle dame e dei cavalieri, i cor-

teggi storici accompagnano il Sindaco sino all'imponente Duomo diSanta Maria Assunta, dove si celebra la Messa del Tallero. Durantela celebrazione tutta la Comunità, rappresentata dal Sindaco, offrealla Chiesa, un dono concreto e simbolico: un tallero d'argento. For an entire weekend, Gemona will become thegourmet destination for all cheese-lovers. Thisevent, dedicated to fine food and wine, whose

objective is to highlight the important cheese produc-ton of local and regional dairies, runs alongside theThanksgiving Feast and there will be numerous standsoffering visitors the chance to taste the various chee-se specialities ranging from mild to mature. In anyevent, the unquestioned protagonist is always dairy-made cheese sold under the trademark “Tipicamentefriuliano” (Typically Friulian). As well as the greatMarket Exhibition of cheese and dairy products,there are many other events well worth noting: theREGIONAL DAIRY CATTLE SHOW, the so-calledMARCJÂT DAL CONTADIN”, the UNPASTEURIZEDCHEESE COMPETITION, contests open to schools,theme expositions and congresses. PIATTI DEL GEMONESEMinestrone Orzo e Fagioli, zuppa di tradizione contadina, un ali-mento perfetto in quanto ricco di sapore, liquidità, proteine e pove-ro di grassi. Frico: È il piatto tra i più caratteristici: semplice, robusto pronto inpochi minuti di cottura e saporitissimo. Viene proposto in più versio-ni: quello classico con le patate, più morbido e dal gusto delicato, alquale spesso si aggiunge la cipolla; quello friabile, costituito da soloformaggio, fritto in sospensione nell'olio.Brovada e Musetto (Brovade e Musèt): È un piatto invernale, dipresunta origine romana. I due alimenti costituiscono una coppiaben abbinata: il Musèt, salume povero, e la Brovada , fantasioso con-nubio di rape bianche inacidite nella vinaccia e cotte in padella.Crostate, Gubana e Focaccia: Le crostate sono presenti quasi in ogniristorante, con piccoli frutti, marmellate ed alle volte con ricotta, digusto casareccio. Tipica delle valli del cividalese è la Gubana, che staormai diventando un dolce preparato da molti fornai della regione,mentre nel periodo di Pasqua è di rigore la focaccia dolce.

DISHES OF GEMONAMinestrone of barley and beans is a bean soup, in the peasant tra-dition, a perfect course rich in taste, proteins, with less fat.Frico: It's one of the most distinctive and well-known dishes inFriuli: it is simple, savory, and easy to cook. It can be prepared in twodifferent versions: the classical type, with cheese and boiled potato-es, more soft, sometimes is possible to add some onions; the crispytype, which is made of cheese fried in oil.Brovada with Musetto (Brovade e Musèt): This is a very old dish.The two foods made up a well matched pair: the Musetto, a leanmeat, and the Brovada, a mix of white turnips which are sovred inwine and cooked together in the pan.Pies, Gubana and Focaccia: Pies can be found in almost all restau-rants and are stuffed with small fruits, jam and sometimes ricotta.Gubana is typical of valleys of Cividalese area and it is now a des-sert prepared by most bakers in the region, while at Easter timesweet focaccia is the rule.
