hello and welcome back from another grueling summer. i think we’re about 9 weeks away from the Western challenge. can’t wait!
You should have noticed that your governing committee has been hard at work during the summer months working on various projects. The new and improved Runner Tracks was one of the highlights for sure. But behind the scenes all of us have been looking for ways to boost our membership and control costs. Not easy, but i think the worst is behind us. some of you have ideas on regattas, marketing, and ideas that may be good for the club. i haven’t forgotten, and i will soon be in touch so you care share your ideas with the rest of the committee. You will soon see a flyer in the mail that has the iDNiYRa membership renewal and other pertinent information. since many of you will be renewing through the website, feel free to pass your flyer along to an interested ice boater that you may know. or take it as a communication to your local ice yacht club meeting. Just another tool to promote our sport and help inform those who are looking for assistance. see you on the ice, Richard potcova Us-216

AuSTRiA – a good start in Decem-ber 2012 on a small lake in corinthia with sailors from all over austria. further sailing in January to march
in carinthia, salzburg, czech Republic (lipno). highlight of season was Ec 2013 with 6 austrian DN sailors and newcomer oE-777 philip hribar winning the Bronze fleet.
CzeCH RePubliC – Weather had allowed only one regatta with one day sailing. 3 sailors took part in Ec and a group of 4 - 5 sailors sailed
intensively in poland in local regattas and small
fleets. Regrettably mitropa trophy with czech, hungarian and austrians not possible (weather). Two new sailors this year but no ice optimists.

THe neTHeRlAnDS – a long winter but not cold enough for good ice. frisian and Dutch championships sailed in one week at end of Janu-
ary on the Tjeukemeer. New Dutch champion piet hopma Zijlema (h-667). 25 new members in 2013 with paying members now totalling more than 500. DN Netherlands celebrate 50 years in 2014.
POlAnD – Very short season. first regatta with very good ice 29/30 December in gizycko, many german and czech sailors. further regat-
tas in early January with the last in mid-march. overall a total of 9 regattas which included 4 polish championships in all groups (seniors, Jun-iors, Young Juniors and ice optimists). seniors a great success with 65 sailors from 5 countries.
RuSSiA – There is steady growth in Russian ice sailing. Russian cham-pionships sailed in st petersburg 3 to 7 January with 28 DNs – winner
Valentin Uvarkin R204. 8 Russians competed in Ec 2013 and one in Wc 2013 in Usa. a number of regattas were completed in Volgograd, st petersburg. Novosibirsk and Vladivostock. The major regattas were held in april on lake Baikal – the asia cup followed by the Baikal cup with 46 DNs from 7 Russian regions and 7 Nations and in addition 7 ice optimists. This unique lake is usually quite warm in april despite 1.5 meters of ice. Thanks are due to Joerg Bohn for pro-moting the Baikal regattas and to Ron sherry for virtually crossing the globe to participate. The next Russian championships and Baikal cup are planned for 5-15 april 2014 – all ice boaters are welcome.

Weather had caused a N. Europe search for ice with minimal snow. much searching over several days with help from mons oscarsson (kungs-backa), arne persson (mariestad), 3 generations of attila pattaki, karol Jablonski, Tomek Zakrze-wski, Jerzy henke and stan macur with further help during the event from Juri saraskin result-ed in gizycko (poland) being selected with good ice close to accommodation. 10 races were completed before snow arrived and following a vote, a move to lake siemanowske on the Bela-rus border for good clear ice. accommodation was in Bialowieza, 35 km. away. one good day of racing was completed before on the second day a force 6 gale ended the championship. Dideric van Riemsdijk was thanked for the givea-ways and T shirts and finland for the trophies and medals.
prize giving was held at short notice in a small restaurant in Bialowieza. The pRc and stan macur were congratulated on a well organised regatta which had been held in difficult and challenging conditions.

The Treasurer presented the financial Report for 2012-2013 (16. 4. 2012 to 18. 04. 2013). as-sets were very healthy but it was decided to leave the iDNiYRa fee at the present level €45). The change of 3 days for the annual report to 18 april vice 15 april was agreed. Jerzy henke from poland did an audit of the accounts for the financial year 2012/2013 and agreed. The “audit” of the accounts in 2014 would be carried out by Vladislav ptasnik. The Treasurer was warmly thanked for his very efficient work and clear presentation.

stickers and sail Tag
it was agreed that better and more durable stickers should be obtained for 2014 with the Runner stickers probably oval in shape. The sail tag presented many difficulties in attaching and a simpler tag was needed for 2014. ACTiOn: webmaster
Number of Races versus time for other activities
a lengthy discussion centred on the number of races in a day versus the time left for socialising,
equipment preparation and relaxation at the end of each day. it was agreed that the previ-ous decision to aim for 5 races per fleet per day was too ambitious, and to date had not been achieved. (secs meeting 2011Topic 19i) TOPiC 10 JuniOR PROgRAmme RePORT
JwC 2014: 17th to 22nd February 2014 host-ed by latvia 17th -18th are practice days and 19th–21st racing championship days with 22nd february as a reserve day if there is no mini-mum of three races finished.
karol Jablonski proposal
shortly before the meeting karol Jablonski had submitted a proposal concerning the rising ages in the sport, caused in part by young DN sail-ors not moving up to the senior fleets, and two potential solutions were presented by the polish National secretary:a. To allow sponsorship for young sailors up to the age of 30b. iDNiYRa Europe should cover costs of competition for at least 10 talented young sail-ors.This led to a lengthy discussion covering many aspects associated with proposal (a). proposal (b) was not considered affordable.
present situation
a significant number of young DN sailors in Europe do not have the finance to continue iceboating once they are no longer Juniors, and drop out of their individual Junior programme. The costs in Europe for competitive material, fuel, ferries, hotels and entry fees etc. prevents those without financial family background from competing once they turn 21 years of age. DN iceboating needs young people to join the class and it was particularly sad to see talented young sailors leaving after all the effort invested in their junior programme. personal sponsor-ship for the 21 to 30 year olds would allow them to ask possible sponsors (e.g. local industry) to finance their travel and sailing. This would continue until they turned 30, by which time they would have had a chance to establish their own income and could finance future iceboating.

Decision of the Board for Europe only
The Board agreed to allow personal sponsor-ship for young sailors aged between 21 and 30. any possible event sponsorship (e.g. stickers) would have priority over personal sponsorship. it was also strongly agreed that the class did not want personal sponsorship in the future for all their sailors! personal sponsorship could be placed on clothes/race suit, the hull, plank, mast and in the sail above the upper batten, as well as below the lower batten. This will take effect from the season 2013/2014.

from the time he sailed his first DN regatta in 1992 to winning his second North american championship in 2013, minnesota’s John “JD” Dennis, has been a quiet and steady presence in the world of ice boat racing who works hard to find a speed advantage.

JD and matt struble at the 2012 DN North american championship..
first of all, 2013 has been a very eventful year for you. can you elaborate on what have been the highlights?
2013 really started in July of 2012 when Jimmy mcDonagh Us5214 agreed to drive with me to the Jersey shore to pick up a skeeter i bought from Tom Nichols. We left on a friday night and arrived in Jersey on saturday. By 3 pm that day we had already eaten lunch with Tom, Dan clapp, and mark hancik and had the skeeter loaded on the trailer. it was a hot day and not many guys go and buy an ice boat when it’s 100 f. We were nervous about it on the drive home and stopped often to check on our cargo. i was thinking, “What have we done?” a skeeter is a lot to bite off and i was unsure if i really wanted to take on that much. That’s where it all started for 2013.
i spent a lot of time working on ice boats and getting ready for the season. The Western challenge was super fun with lighter air, fast sailing, and close racing. The Western Regional was the same with a little more snow on the ice. i took note that at the Western Regional Ron sherry Us44 made some short insert runners work and was su-per fast.
Then off we went to lake pepin for the gold cup and North ameri-cans. Even though the conditions were tough we were able to get rac-ing in. it was a super fun event and was ecstatic to finish third in the gold cup.
obviously winning the North american championship was exciting. i sat there that day thinking, ‘this is really going to happen.’ i had a speed advantage in that light air condition. it took nine years for me to repeat as North american champion and it is a really big highlight.
in my personal life, i have a new baby daughter, Eloise. anji, my fi-ancé, is a great lady and great mom. it’s super neat to have a healthy daughter. having a baby is something everyone should try once! it’s pretty amazing.
The skeeter regattas were unbelievable. learning to sail a skeeter is hard to explain. They are a lot more work to set up than a DN, but boy,
the ride is something, a whole new adrenaline rush.
Down in madison on lake kegonsa i went out and sailed the skeeter in nice light air right before the inter-national skeeter association (isa) regatta and the boat felt good. Then the first day of the isa was really windy and i sat in the boat wondering ‘how much wind will these guys race in?’ and thinking we should go in. finally, the race was abandoned because it was blowing 25 mph. i realized then that the skeeter was a real hand-ful. i never did really wind it up to full speed because i wasn’t sure if there was enough room to wind it back down.
During the regatta, we had a su-per fun lunch with the skeeter fleet at sunnyside. Buddy melges was there and i think about that day from time to time because it was such a big day.
The Northwest ice Yacht Rac-ing association (NiYa) had trying conditions. Everyone did a great job getting that one in. sailing the skeeter, i won a race and then the ten lap free-for-all. That was a day i’ll never forget. kenny White-horse passed me on lap 8 in the free-for-all when i pinched the mark and we had a great battle. i was fortunate to be on the right end of that race.

JD rounds the mark at the 2013 Northwest ice Yacht Racing asso-ciation regatta on green lake in Wisconsin in his skeeter ice boat.
When did you first get involved with ice boating and who gave you your first ride?
it was a family sport. my dad bought two lockley skimmers when i was a kid for me and my sister. it was free entertainment in front of our house. my dad also had a Nite from Jane pegel. We sailed ice boats as a fam-ily when there were conditions. our neighbor, Dick putnam, also kept his Nite and DN in front of our house.
The racing started later when i moved back home from colorado. i built my first DN without really sailing one. i spent a lot of time and made a lot of phone calls to Jane. i made some mistakes and eventually got it right. i sailed my first DN regatta at the North americans on lake men-dota in madison, Wi in 1992.
if i’d won the last race, i could have won the Bronze fleet but instead placed second because i made a mistake and was still learning how to race ice boats. i was leading the last race and all i had to do was go to the layline, tack around, and sail to the finish. instead i decided that i would leebow the sailor that eventually won, mike fullerton.
You have been at the sport for quite a long time. What is it that keeps you motivated and excited?
it’s two sided right now because i re-ally enjoy working on the boat and going sailing. i work on my boats as much as i can and enjoy the engi-neering side of getting the boat align-ment perfect. When it’s time to sail, i enjoy the sailing. Every year i think i could do other things but over time, i have made so many good friends through ice boating. i don’t want to walk away from it, the craft, the sail-ing, and the people.
sometimes i have my doubts but i always come back. The fact that we can’t sail all the time makes the sport even more fun and our sailing so great.

“JD is, by far, the most talented DN sailor racing today. in my mind he is the complete package. There is a reason why he is a two time (and defending!) North american champion.
JD’s influence on the fleet is legendary. if you want someone to design a speed sail, ask JD. if you have a part that no one else can fix, ask JD. if you want to power-up a polish runner sharpener in an american hotel, ask JD.
i am forever grateful to JD. i will never forget the day he pulled me aside and convinced me that i could compete in the DN fleet. since then, i have spent countless days racing on ‘Tonka, and elsewhere, trying to catch JD.
JD is a man of few words. But watch him sail and you will conclude, as i have, that he is truly one of the best to have ever raced a DN.”

how do you find sailing your new skeeter compared to the DN?
once you are sailing they feel very much alike but the conse-quences are much greater in the skeeter. There’s no question that the DN helps with the learn-ing curve of the skeeter. The fact that you can’t see the skeeter sail is a really big adjustment es-pecially from the vantage point of never having sailed a skeeter. it’s a strange concept-to be ahead of the sail. it’s surprising how fast they accelerate and there’s so much power. Top and bottom mark roundings are a WoW eve-ry time, every time!
What has been your most mem-orable experience ice boating?
That’s a hard one because there have been some big ones. finish-ing third at the 2013 Worlds was really exciting along with winning the North americans for the sec-ond time.
in the skeeter regattas i’ll never forget a couple of those bottom mark roundings. i’m so proud to be a part of the skeeter fleet be-cause i’ve watched them race all my life. The next year will be an-other big year in the skeeter fleet because Dan clapp will be rac-ing again, he won’t miss another year. Winning the NiYa free-for-all and talking to Buddy melges
“When JD (and also the Doctor [mark christensen Us4824]) aged-out of junior sailing, they came into the m16 scow class and quickly rose to the top of the fleet. it was readily appar-ent that here were two guys with real potential. They worked for gordy Bowers when JD got involved in DN sailing. he’d phone me several times a week, trying to figure out how to make the boat go faster. i recall that he mentioned to gordy that i wasn’t providing enough critical information. apparently gordy suggested that perhaps JD was not asking the right questions. from then on our conversations became more technical with respect to sailing technique and tuning the various components. JD built several masts and sails and began to win some races and regattas. from then on i was the person asking the questions about runners and mast deflection. i have always admired his determination to overcome the chal-lenges life has placed in his path, and appreciate the support he gave me when i encoun-tered similar challenges.” Jane pegel Us805
after winning a race was really unforgettable.
Talk about ice boat racing in Europe.
steve orlebeke Us4926 and i went to the Worlds in 2008 along with a large american team. The regatta was originally scheduled for poland but ended up on lake lipno in the czech Republic. it was difficult to take the time to do it but anyone who is serious about this sport should take the time. We have a lot of friends over there and they take good care of you.
You learn how they run the races. They do a nice job with a profes-sional race committee and the large number of boats.
it was two weeks of fun from getting there, getting the boats ready, traveling as a team, and the racing of course. Jörg Bohn g737 rented a mercedes sprint-er which i helped to drive. it was slow driving it up the hills with the trailer but fast coming down. Jörg warned me that the fine for speeding would be high but i kept it fast down the hills.
matt struble Us183 won the Worlds and we all had a bit too much fun celebrating the win that night. We sailed the European championship with headaches
the next day.
What advice would you give to new aspiring racers?
The number one piece of advice i can give is to find a used boat, the best boat you can afford, get involved, and ThEN figure out how to upgrade your program.
secondly, if there’s a regatta called on, just go! Don’t worry about what the weather might do, just go. The worst thing that will happen is that you won’t sail. Even if you don’t sail, you will learn something. Just go, make it easy, and don’t think about it.
i asked Jeff kent, ‘what makes them go fast’? he said “every-thing”! i start from the bottom and work my way up. i make sure the runners have the right crown, straight edges, and are aligned. Then i work from there on my mast and sail.
JD explains wiring a polish runner sharpener as steve orelebeke looks on.
“When i first met JD, he was a brilliant scow sailor, sail maker, and up and coming DN sailor.
When we first started composite concepts in 1995 he was one of the first people to jump on board and pro-mote our products.
he has a real accurate eye for what makes a boat go fast. if he needs something new, he will build it or buy it. The night before this year’s North americans he took an old set of 30” runners and turned them into regatta winners.
he has become one of my coaches over the years. i have made many a late night call from Europe to get his advice. he does a great job of pointing out the obvi-ous without making you feel like an idiot.
The most important contribution to the class is his abil-ity to judge weather and find ice. JD has a great team of scouts he has developed over the years. he is al-ways involved in finding ice for the Western challenge, Western Regionals, and any continental event we hold in the Western region.
i will never forget last year before the North americans when he came up to me and said, ‘i’m not asking you, i’m telling you that me, you, and Tomek are going out to find ice for the North americans.’
The temp was just above zero f and it was blowing over 35 mph in the puffs but we went out and it was the most fun of the whole trip. We traveled south on the mississippi and then north to find a piece of ice big enough with the least amount of snow so we could run the event.”
Ron sherry Us44
are you still finding new ways to make the DN go faster, either in technique or equipment?
Yes. at the 2013 North americans i took what i learned during the season and ap-plied it to my boat. i learned from watch-ing Ron sherry and Robert graczyk p31 work on their runners. i had a set of 15 year old runners, 30” inserts that i had barely raced on, worked on them in the hotel, changed the angle, put them on the boat, and made sure they were lined up. We all know what happened. There’s always more ways to go fast and that’s what’s so great about the DN.
What are some of your soft water sailing accomplishments?
Right now i’m sailing an a scow. in the past i’ve competitively raced scows in-cluding Es, cs, mcs, and m16s. i also sail a J24. i won the inlands [the largest and most important scow regatta in ameri-ca] in a c scow, mc scow, and m16. i was on board an a scow as a trimmer during another inland regatta win.
a nice warm breezy day with warm wa-ter, out soft water sailing, compared to black ice with fresh breeze, out ice boat-ing? Which one do you choose?
a warm breezy day on black ice! i re-member sailing on lake pepin when it was 65 f and the lake was hard and black. Those are the best days.
