the discovery of ketchup on a roast dinner, randomly meeting someone who comes from the other side of the world and realising how similar you are. I hope you have all gathered these fond memories that will stay with you for a long time. I’ve had an amazing time being at Roehampton and an end of an era has come my way. This year (out of many) has probably been my best. Being in a position to see how the University has developed in recent years has been a privilege and an experience I won’t ever forget.I’d like to say a massive Thank You to the other 3 Sabb’s who have helped to build the Union we have today, they have done an amazing job and I think we have all been lucky to have them as our Vice Presidents and for everything they’ve done for us. Huge congratulations to Wade Tomlinson who will be your President for 2012/2013, I wish him all the best of luck and I know he will do an amazing job. I would like to also say another massive Thank You to all the Student Union officers and Programme Reps who have volunteered to help improve everyone’s time at Roehampton – the place wouldn’t be what it is without you! And last but not least - a thank you to all the students who voted in the RSU elections. I wouldn’t have been able to have this opportunity without your support (even though RON did put up a bit of a fight, but we won’t dwell on that!)So, this is it for you third years! Three years have been and gone and a degree in waiting for you upon graduation in July – Congratulations! I’m sure those all nighters and dissertation panics will have paid off. I hope you’re all looking forward to the next step and wish you all the best for the future. I really hope you all go on to do and achieve everything you want from the world - don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t do something. We are, each of us, brilliant so shine your light and brighten the world with what you have to offer. Thanks Roehampton ... Alex Murray

Well would you get a load of this new sexy, glossy feel!Hat’s off to you Stevie boy (and I have a lot of them) you’ve done well here. It’s seems only yesterday I got dropped off at the big pearl gates of Roehampton University thinking ‘what the hell have I got myself into’. Four years on, we are in the final term of 2012 and I’m now thinking ‘where the hell has this time gone!?’ I’ve seen the University grow in four years, I’ve seen the Belfry Bar become all academic, I’ve seen Froebel bar transform, I’ve been part of the Froebel team to lose 4 Frigbys (Going to change this year), I’ve seen Southlands make Shitelands history but the one thing I’ve continue to see is the strength of the student community within all four colleges at Roehampton. So, what’s the gossip from the past year!? Fresher’s week was huge. Every year fresher’s week continues to grow with the newly implemented ‘fresher’s ball’ being a bit hit. Fresher’s fair had an all time record, with ticket sales also selling at an all time record. Big thank you to everyone who was involved and I hope the next years will be just as good! This year has seen Roehampton University’s very first bike pool established. Through the winter months only the solid, dedicated students willing to cycle into Putney for that refreshing beer or that delicious KFC used the bikes but as the summer months picked up we have seen a growing interest of students willing to hop on the bikes and take those warm evening trips to Richmond park or for the lazier ones; cycle to Digby to shower and change. In February a bunch of eager and bitterly cold set of students embarked on a journey up the north

coast of Europe to the fine city of Amsterdam for a 3 day get-away. All in all it was a very cold but successful trip, minus the small dilemma of a student losing her passport and the coach getting stripped at customs! We had a very successful R.A.G week with our very own Craig Aldridge who raised over £2000 for three amazing charities. I’d like to extend my congratulations to Craig and wish good luck to Rachael Mary who I’m sure will do a great job.So, still to come,we have a college day where your wonderful CP’s will be organising a day where you can celebrate why you are where you are. There will be theatre trips, a trip to the sunny seaside of Brighton, a trip to experience the new ride at Thorpe Park, a fancy dress bike ride around campus, BBQ’s on the lawn, slip ‘n’ slides and much, much more. Frigby 2012 falls on the first weekend of May, if you haven’t done so already please get your ticket, t-shirt as this one is not to be missed! We have the Sport Roehampton dinner on 12th May for all you sports fans and a very special Sport Roehampton Olympics in the daytime. Also ... Don’t forget the last BOP of term on the 1st June.I’d like to say a massive well done to all the dudes and dudettes in Education who were on placement this year. You guys hung in there and deserve all the best in the final term to come! Also, a massive well done to all the sports teams who performed above and beyond their expectations to achieve all what they have this year. A personal thank you to all the CP’s and CSS’s that have made each college as fun and well looked after as they possibly could have! That’s pretty much it from me. The only piece of advice I can give you is this last term is going to go very, very quickly. Sleep when you’re dead and drink fruit juice when you’re a full time worker. Make the most out of the remaining weeks so you can look back on your first, second or third year and happily say to yourself… ‘yeah, my time at University was sick!’ Keep safe, stay as classy as you can at Roehampton and I hope to see you around at some point in the world in the near and hopeful future! Peace out, Baz

I’m sure your all thinking “Where did the time go?!” if not “I shoulda slept with ....” I joke (!), but regardless I know you’ll all be reminiscing about your year at Roehampton. Whether the pinnacle was the first time you got a grade much higher than you predicted or the BOP where you were carried home, each and every one of you has come and left your mark at Roehampton!I believe that the University experience is much more than turning up and leaving with a degree, it’s a lot to do with growing, maturing and meeting people from all over the country, the world, and discovering new cultures however close or far. That time when you introduced someone to Nando’s, working in a group with someone who you have no idea what they’re saying,

FRESH MAGAZINE6

in terms of getting the design right, as this is the first edition I’m sure there are still many improvements to make but I think we’ve made a great first attempt. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all those that have contributed to this publication, both staff and students, and I extend my apologies to those that submitted articles that couldn’t be fitted in. As with all publications, we try to give a strong consistency to each edition so unfortunately a few articles would seem a little out of place. Although being the first Fresh Magazine, this is in fact the last edition of Fresh for this academic, again I say a massive thank you to all those that have worked with me over the year to provide some fantastic articles for students to read. Over this term I will be recruiting a team of students to produce the magazine for next year, from artistic designers to final editors so if this is something you’re interested in then make sure you drop me an email a.s.a.p. to [email protected]. For all of you third years, congratulations on seeing you’re time at University through, I’m sure there were moments when it all got a bit too much and you considered moving back for those home comforts, but you’ve made it, a degree is almost in your hands and employment will soon follow (to finally even out those overdrafts!) I look forward to seeing you all around and celebrating the end to a great year for Roehampton! Steve Mols x

Hiyaaa, and welcome back to the BEST term of the academic year here at Roey…Summer Term! Exams and deadlines are coming to a wrap, and soon those endless nights in front of word documents will become a distant memory, overtaken by all the excitement packed into these last 6 weeks! Now Frigby (*cough*come on zeebras!*cough*) is one of the biggest events this term hosts (besides from the epic Summer Ball), and it is also one of the longest. From 9 am on the Saturday, through to 2am on Sunday, it is extremely easy to get carried away with the snakeyB’s and potentially make yourself quite poorly. Being the responsible adults & outstanding citizens that you all already are, I’m sure you don’t need me to remind you to; a) Drink plenty of water during the day, particularly if it’s a scorcher! b) Have a solid hearty dinner, consisting of meat & two veg before going out in the evening, and c) Stick with your chums on the way to and from events! In all seriousness, the abundance of time available this term often enough makes people go a bit crazy on the alcohol front, therefore it’s always worth having

VP WELFARE & COMMUNITY

a subtle reminder that your liver is designed to function for your foreseeable future, not just your time as a student!

Now I’ve finished being a killjoy (occupational hazard), this term the Welfare & Community Zone will be developing a Peer Support Network, which will be fully functional by next September. To find out more about what is involved in being a Peer Supporter, please drop by RSU reception to pick up a role description and application. The role is voluntary and will take up approx. 2hrs a week of your time BUT you will learn plenty of skills which will compliment your CV. There are 12 positions available.

Other things to look out for are; Access to Learning Fund workshop (date TBC), raising awareness about how to apply, and The Parents Club workshop on Summer Infant Dietary in association with Chapel St. Family Hub. Basically, how to get your little bundles of joy to eat their greens!

So that’s it from me, enjoy yourselves this term, you all deserve to blow off some steam! And whilst you’re all mooching on the lawn with your pimms, spare a second to think of your sabbs working away and get in our drinks ready for when we knock off at 5! I’ll have strawberry brothers…Cheers ;) Love Fitzy xoxo

VP COMMUNICATIONS & ENGAGEMENTWell Roehampton, here we are, the closing weeks of another extremely eventful year here at University! As always, the year has had its ups and downs for us all but more so than ever has seemed an enjoyable one. I hope all first year students have found their feet now, made some friends that will stay with you throughout and, perhaps more importantly right now, sorted out a place to live for next year. I hope you’re all liking the new magazine and finding it more appealing than the newspaper, it’s been a tough transition

in terms of getting the design right, as this is the first edition I’m sure there are still many improvements to make but I think we’ve made a great first attempt. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all those that have contributed to this publication, both staff and students, and I extend my apologies to those that submitted articles that couldn’t be fitted in. So here we are, final term fever, nothing but work stress then parties, then job stress then parties, then finding a house stress then parties! It is a term full of ups and downs, lefts and rights and more events than the rest of the academic year put together. We have the joys of Summer Ball, Frigby, Shitelands, May Day, FroFest, Froebel Celebration, and who even knows what else to look forward to. One thing is for sure, it is going to be one hell of a term! For those of you that already have your Frigby tickets, congrats for being on it, for those of you that haven’t make sure you get them quick! The game is held at Sutton United’s ground (20 mins from campus) and the Froebel tickets get you a free bacon roll as well as travel to and from the ground and entrance to the game.Froebel bar will open from 8am on match day morning followed by Frigby Bop and is always an excellent day out for any sports fan, waterfight fan or just a college event supporter. Our rivals, the blue and yellow part of Roehampton have taken

the cup home for the last few years and for those of us in our 3rd year this is our final chance to finally bring Frigby home to where it belongs…FROEBEL!Frofest,an event first imagined by last years president Baz, will finally come to fruition this summer at the hands of myself, AD, Simon and the wealth of talent that we have on campus. Entertainment will range from live music, stand up comedy, spoken word and much more so look out for the dates as soon as they are confirmed.Be sure to keep those lights switched off as the final student switch off competition will finish soon, Froebel took second place last year winning £200 which we put towards free BBQ and Ben & Jerry’s for Froebel students, this year it would be awesome to come first and keep Froebel as the number 1 college around.Hugs and bearded love, your President...FJ x

Mount Clare has been great this year, a real buzz on campus and lots of people wanting to be here again in September! Feeling slightly pressured writing in the first edition of Fresh magazine, but luckily I’ve been re-elected (thank you!) so you’ll be hearing more from me for a while! I know all these deadlines have been pretty crappy but hopefully you have a lot less work to do after Easter holidays and you can relax a bit more! It’s been great this year to meet most of you, and I’d just like to thank my flat

reps who have been great! Hope to see you all soon! RACHAEL HINGE MC Love! Xx

A big hello to Roehampton and an even bigger hello to Digby!Welcome back to the last and BEST term of the university year. Soon these end of year deadlines and exams will be over, and all that sleep deprivation from last minute late night revision cramming will be worth it. Summer term is when Roehampton truly comes to life and the charm and beauty of the campus really shines through. So don’t go running back home to the corners of the Earth for summer just yet, be sure to get involved in what for some is their last few weeks at Roehampton! On top of the usual Grand, Fez and Bop – which nobody now has a valid excuse not to attend as lectures are well and truly a thing of the past – we have without doubt the biggest and best events of the year upon us. Frigby is an event that can 100% not be missed by the population of Digby, not only is it a fun, albeit wet, day out, it is a chance to shout about how much you love Digby. And when you can also watch the mighty Digby Lions take on (and let’s face it, BEAT) the Froebel Zebras AND enjoy one of the only times in your adult life you can participate in an outrageously competitive water fight, there really is no reason not to jump on the Frigby band wagon.. or should I say double decker buses! Also nearly upon us is the much anticipated Summer Ball, which is an absolute blast every year. The RSU put on a fantastic event, complete with fairground rides and games, comedians, top live music acts and a host of awesome DJs to dance the night away too. And if you’re really hardcore there’s the Survivors Photo Challenge – can you survive the whole night till 5am!? Lots of blue and yellow love,Your Digby CP, Beeken x

WHITELANDSSOUTHLANDSFor some of you the end is extremely near and for the rest, you have a lot yet to come.March and April are finally gone meaning that most of those deadlines are now a problem in the past, so you have the month of May to enjoy yourselves and this amazing weather.Although lectures and assignments are dying out, May happens to be the best month in Whitelands and Roehampton all together. Dates will be posted but here’s the line-up of events in no particular order:

-Frigby (Froebel v.s Digby)-Shitelands (Southlands v.s Whitelands)- M ay D ay ( M ay M o n a r c h C r o w n i n g F e s t i va l o n W h i t e l a n d s )-Whitelands Thorpe Park Trip-Frugby (Football v.s Rugby)-SUMMER BALL!-Varsity Match (Roehampton v.s Buckinghamshire)-Sports Awards Dinner- F i n a l S h i t e l a n d s F u n d r a i s e r

As you can see there’s a lot to do. Why not spend the rest of your time here by having as much fun as possible and creating memories instead of word counts.Next Years’ Whitelands College President and Social Secretary will be Elijah Williams and Simeon Entwistle, a massive congratulations to them!Wishing you all a great year and may your Whitelands blood stay fresh for the years ahead and thank you for making Whitelands a great place to be a part of.

All the best.Wade Tomlinson, Whitelands College President.

Alright guys, hope you all had a good Easter break and are ready to go for your last term. Unfortunately last term we had to postpone our annual Southlands Saturday, but we are looking to hold it this term now with the date to be confirmed. After final exams and essays have been done there should be plenty of events for everyone to get involved with. We are looking to put on another fundraiser for Shitelands early in the term so that we can make it as successful as it was last year. The game will be held on Wednesday 31st of May, with fez to follow to celebrate or to console the winners and losers. I hope you all get involved and back Southlands for what will hopefully be two wins in two years. Cheers, and peace out.

ELECTION RESULTS

Towards the back-end of last term, as the workload was cranking up and deadlines were fast approaching, campus seemed quieter than normal. But, in the background the RSU elections were starting to warm up and gain momentum with students nominating themselves to become your representatives for next year. With 44 students nominating themselves and only 20 positions being contested, campus suddenly became awash with posters, candidates donning super hero outfits and it was impossible to log on to facebook without another ‘vote for me’ reminder.

It was great to see so many students involved and a strong indicator that the Union is engaging with its membership. A highlight for this year’s elections was seeing so many students attend candidate question time, there wasn’t a spare seat in the house with over 350 students listening to what the candidates had to say and then putting them on spot with questions from the floor. This is often the first real test for candidates, with those prepared coming to the forefront and for those not so prepared showing signs of unease. This year was no different, with the cheers, boos and deathly silences being the first real indicator of which way these elections would go.

Behind the posters and gimmicks the elections are a serious process as it is these elections that shape your Union and select your representatives for next year. Again we are fortunate to have so many willing and enthusiastic students who want to get involved with developing the Union, provide opportunities for you to get involved with student life and representing the student body at various levels. This democratic process ensures that the Union remains for the students, run by the students. Next year, if you would like to see what these guys are up to then please come along to Student Union Council meetings, this is where issues effecting the University, RSU and students are discussed and voted on.

We would like to thank all 44 students who ran in the elections and also the 1498 students who voted, it would not be possible to run such a healthy and engaging election without you. We still have a few positions available so if you are interested in getting involved with the Union please keep your eyes peeled for information on ‘Top Up

SURVIVORS G U I D E T O P

T I P SWith hundreds of bands to choose from, it can be pretty overwhelming to walk onto festival grounds with no basic outline of what acts you’d like to catch. Make a list beforehand of bands you know you want to see, and make sure you know what time their sets begin. With a concrete plan, you can prioritize all the acts you want to catch. However, you can establish a basic outline while still being flexible when it comes to what you see.

To avoid unneeded concert drama between crowd members, it is important to practice proper concert etiquette. First, don’t try to push your way up to the front ten minutes before the show starts. Nothing angers people more, especially the people who’ve been waiting in the same area for hours just to get a good spot for the show. Next, try to throw all your rubbish in a receptacle rather than on the ground- it saves people who have to clean up after the festival a lot of trouble!

In light of the two deaths that occurred this year at Bonnaroo, it is important in all the enchanting music mania not to forget your wellbeing. Keep water on hand at all times, and drink frequently. Try not to consume too much alcohol, which is a major contributor to dehydration. Stow a couple granola bars or packs of trail mix in your pocket or bag, and crack them out when you need a pick me up. These little things may just save you! If you start to feel faint, do not try to be strong- get the attention of a security guard to pull you out of the crowd and get you to

Touts pretty much dominate the concert world right now, buying up thousands of tickets to concerts as soon as they go on sale, and then reselling them for double, triple, even quadruple the face value. The Austin City Limits music festival recently sold out of three-day passes, only to have tons of “tickets for sale” listings on Craigslist and the festival’s Facebook page days later for way over face value. If you’re after tickets, know the date and time of when they will be available to buy on the festival’s website. If you didn’t get tickets in time, and are desperate to buy some from a reseller, be careful! Print passes are easily counterfeited, and Craigslist is a breeding ground for touts trying to get your money. If you use Craigslist, make sure you get the phone number of the person you plan to get tickets from. Make sure you meet them in person.

Do not use a flash! Half the time, security gets mad when they see flashes go off, although it hardly matters in a huge crowd after the big act has begun. Flashes will be going off everywhere- but flashes really only illuminate the back of people’s heads that are directly in front of you rather than what’s on the stage. Instead, try turning your ISO (shutter speed and light sensitivity) up to 400 or even 800. You could even try for as high as it goes, and see how that turns out. Next, turn the EV (exposure value) setting way down, into the negative number options. It will seem pretty dark, but this is perfect for concerts. That’s it! It makes a big difference.

Hi folks, the evenings are getting lighter and the jackets getting thinner, which means summer is almost upon us, and that Fresh Air has almost completed its inaugural term as the RSU radio station. When I started last August, Fresh Air was nothing more than a mixing desk and some software nobody really knew how to use properly! So to see it expand into a fully-licenced station with a full team of students and weekly schedule has been fantastic. The enthusiasm, dedication and outright talent among our students has been pleasing to see and watching them grow with confidence throughout the year has been thoroughly rewarding. While we definitely aim to keep the format of all our successful shows next term, our third-year presenters will obviously be leaving us. So, that’s where you guys come in - if you are interested in getting involved, either behind the scenes or as a presenter, then please e-mail [email protected] with a bit about yourself and your interests and my successor will try to get you on board next year. To get a feel for it, you can tune in live now at www.roehamptonstudent.com. The station runs 24/7 (baring technical gremlins) with the student-presented shows going out in the early evening. I would also like to take this opportunity to say farewell. I have been at Roehampton for the last five years - as a student, resident DJ and finally in this role as New-Media Intern – but, like many of you, will be leaving in June for pastures new. It’s been an absolute blast. I’ve met some wonderful people and also learned many new skills that will hopefully stand me in good stead for the future too.

If you are interested in the possibility of taking over my role in August, or any of our other (paid) internships, then keep an eye on our website for more details. Duties include: the day-to-day running of Fresh Air,

making short promotional videos, co-ordinating

photographers for events and contributing content to the website. So, if you are graduating in June and wish to expand /hone your existing skills in a friendly working environment, then you should consider applying. Farewell and all the best! Richard x

Well I’m coming to the end of my internship at the RSU –and what a fantastic year it’s been! We’ve cleared out the on-campus allotment, had a fabulous tea party with some local grannies, celebrated Christmas with kids from the estate, sang some dodgy Xmas carols for Chapel St.,posted lots of goodies to some poorly pals, restored the old Orchard, helped clean up the Thames, Marshalled for Missing People and raised 1K for charity!!I think it’s safe to say we’ve ‘Made a Difference’ this year –and I just want to personally thank everyone who has supported the ‘RU inspired?’ volunteering initiative. Although I’ll be sad to leave the RSU –I’m really grateful to have had the opportunity to create so many Projects and meet so many inspiring volunteers. I hope you all have a wonderful summer break- whether that’ll be travelling, catching up with friends and family or maybe you’re just having a chill out summer...but if you happen to be stuck for something to do I’ve put together a few volunteering opportunities that you might like to get stuck into! That’s it from me –thanks a million!<3 Donna

Comic HypeMarvel favorites inclusive to Thor, Iron Man, Cpt America and Hulk unite (reluctantly) to form a superhuman gang to once again save the world from the brink of destruction. This time Loki, Thor’s brother and an army of Skrulls (alien race) are the ones set on destroying our planet. Not even Jeremy Kyle could solve this family feud, let alone the issues of the gang set to save us. An explosive action thrill ride that promises to be packed with charm and witty one liners delivered by an all star cast and their alter egos.

The Avengers26/04/12

Marvels rival DC brings us the superhero action adventure of the year, which will conclude the legendary saga of the Dark Knight. Christian Bale dons the Batman persona for the last time in Christopher Nolans epic trilogy. Gotham city needs Batman once again to protect them from a new advisory that slightly resembles Hannibal due to his choice of headgear. Having witnessed Batman take the fall for Two Face’s murders 8 years previous – What’s next in the masterminds plan to save a city that brands him as the enemy. Fans expect a heart breaking end; we can all expect a fierce fight as the finale.

The Dark Knight Rises20/07/12

Not the next instalment with Maguire as Peter Parker, the geeky boy who became a hero. This is the amazing Spider-Man (Garfield, Never Let Me Go) with far more arse kicking attitude. The story explores how Parker, who still lives with his aunt May (Field, Mrs Doubtfire), finds a briefcase that opens the door to discovering answers about his parent’s disappearance. This Spider-Man’s nemesis is no machine, nor psychological challenge, more reptilian. The Lizard is the one who forces Parker to make a life altering choice in regards to his super human nature. A different history; for a much loved hero.

American Reunion06/04/12

The gang is getting back together to relive their youth at their high school reunion in East Great Falls, Michigan. A highly anticipated party occurs and naturally is inclusive to beer, babes and – that pretty much covers it. An amusing comparison between the younger generation living high school and the reality they live now, leads them to question the wishes they made in school. Growing up is inevitable for all of us, obviously excluding Stiffler (Scott) the epitome of immaturity. Comedy genius will be delivered both slapstick and cringe worthy, complete with laugh a minute awkward moments and a subtle undertone of moral fibre.

Ten years after the second instalment in the Men in Black series, they kept us waiting for long enough and with high expectations. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have bizarrely enough been the perfect double act and their humour combined with some freaky looking aliens and of course a little bit of love, lust, slime and explosives; there really was never a dull moment. Judging from the trailer, young agent K (Brolin) is on a par with the MIB talent. This time J (Smith) is going back in time to the 60’s to save K (Brolin) from assassination and altering the natural course of history…. All in a day’s work.

Horror

As well as this film’s release date being Friday 13th April, it’s similarities to the classic horror film ‘Friday the 13th’ are obvious. Five friends travel to a remote cabin in the woods, where under darkness bad things happen. It is of course a typical horror synopsis, where the girls scream and the boys fight into the save the lives of their friends. However, it does bring unique ideas to the horror genre, with its cryptic twists and largely obvious hints at the secrets hidden in the Cabin they were never supposed to find. It is a film for those who aren’t afraid to scream and as you’ll find out this film proves that some secrets are best kept hidden.

This May the creators of paranormal activity bring to you 2012’s predicted best horror film of the year, where a group of friends travel to Chernobyl as tourists. Their innocent antics take a turn for the worse when mysterious people keep popping up in their photographs, until they realize they were never really alone. This jumpy unpredictable film highlights our true fascination with horror, the fear of the unknown. The ghostly supernatural horror will have you jumping out of your skin, but also breathe taken by the complexity of its twists, even I don’t know if I’m brave enough to watch this one!

If shopping were an Olympic sport, I’d win Gold every time! I get quite competitive, especially during sale season, and woe betide you if you come between me and a bargain. This season, in preparation for the Olympics, fashion has gone all sporty with wedge trainers and stylish sports bags popping up all over the place. Stella McCartney has designed the official Team GB kits and in my view, she’s not done too badly with what must have been a daunting task. Now, just because fashion has gone sporty, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to follow suit (although I will say that a 30 minute abs sesh in the gym sets you right up for the day!). I would love to see anyone attempt a 5k run in the Isabel Marant wedge trainers that have been seen all over the celebs recently and although you want to create that “I love working out” vibe with this trend, you

don’t want to just recreate what you’d wear to the gym; in my case, an old t-shirt and a pair of skin tight leggings that should never be seen outside of said establishment. I think the key to nailing this trend is to mix it into your normal wardrobe and prevent it from looking too ‘try hard’. Gone are the days when plastering yourself from head to toe with the latest sports label was the height of fashion and now it’s more about choosing fabrics with the sports luxe feel, rather than going all out obvious. This Marks and Spencer’s parka – yes I did say Marks and Spencer! – is ideal for layering over a delicate top and a pair of skinny jeans and the drop hem waist on this pastel pink dress reminds me of Victoria Beckham’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection. I think it’s safe to say that based on the evidence below, M&S is definitely worth a visit.

2012 promises to be a great year for sport and no matter what your view is on the gym, you can still do your bit to embrace the Olympics without even breaking a sweat. What could be better?!

Amy Brierly is a Roehampton student with a more-than-valid excuse for deferring her degree for a year - she is part of the Great Britain sitting volleyball team training hard for this summer’s Paralympics.

Originally from Chester, Amy was studying Health & Human Science, but has put it on the back-burner to concentrate fully on volleyball, training intensively, right here at the University, for the London games.Amy, 22, was born with Congenital Hip Dysplasia (a misalignment or deformation of the hip-joint) and has been playing sitting-volleyball for the last three years. With a natural talent for the sport, she has progressed quickly at club level (playing for the Celtic Dragons and Malory Eagles) and will now be proudly representing Great Britain at the games. She admits it wasn’t love at first sight for her and the sport though: “I started off by going to a have-a-go session and to be honest didn’t really enjoy it much at first, but after a few sessions I was hooked.” Indeed, Amy is hooked so much, that as well as being one of the senior players she is now also one of the coaches too:

Brierly’s team plan to work hard and enjoy the experience, but being new to the sport, are also realistic about their chances: “Compared to the other nations, we are a fairly new team. The woman’s programme itself has only been going two years, so this is our first Olympics. There are eight teams in the woman’s section, we aren’t expecting to win it, just do ourselves proud and build towards Rio in 2016.”The team is made up of athletes from all across the country, with a mixture of disabilities, including leg and arm

amputees and even one victim of the London 7/7 tube bombings. They have been doing all their preparation for the games here at University of Roehampton, training up to 23 hours a week, in Davies Building and at the Recreation Centre on Whitelands Campus: “With sitting volleyball the only thing you need is a good floor for sliding on, and Davies has one of the best floors I’ve ever played on!” says Brierly. Played on a smaller court and with a lower net, the rules of sitting volleyball are fundamentally the same as that of indoor volleyball. Except one part of the player’s body, from the buttocks to the shoulder must be in contact with the court whilst playing the ball. Amy is quick to shoot down anyone who might suggest that sitting volleyball is easier than its parent sport though: “It’s physically very demanding. With other

sports, people know how to run naturally, but trying to move quickly along a floor, if you’ve not done it before, takes a lot out of you.”At club-level, sitting volleyball is open to able-bodied players to play too, the University organises tasters sessions for those interested in getting involved and Amy encourages anyone to give it a go: “ I t h i n k S i t t i n g V o l l e y b a l l i s o n e o f t h e m o s t i n c l u s i v e t e a m s p o r t s o u t t h e r e – l i t e r a l ly a n y b o dy c a n p l ay .”
