Transcript of Magazine case study
Vibe is a relatively new magazine, and has only started re-production in 2009 after it was originally
shut down. Quincy jones was the founder of the magazine and is predominately based around the
R&B and Hip-Hop music scene. After it was invested in by InterMedia productions it has expanded
hugely and is now a well-known and highly successful magazine. Its main audience is young R&B
fans; it promotes the rebellious active lifestyle.
Vibes expansion has been enhanced by its internet presence, its website brings exclusive interviews
from its magazines and more to the internet. It also advertises and promotes many other parts of
the R&B music scene. With music videos and interviews from some of the biggest stars in R&B
exclusive to their website they attract a large audience and have been vital to their survival since
their re-development by the investment company.
Vibe is based in New York City but has become an internationally renowned magazine and is now
published in many different countries, including the United Kingdom. Its global presence has led to It
producing its own TV channel and radio channels in certain parts of the world as it continues to
develop and expand to a wider audience, it also has helped promote the R&B lifestyle and R&B
music as it continues to take over the music industry.
Vibe Magazine was known for the creative direction of their covers. R&B singer Mary J. Blige
repeatedly made the cover of Vibe, with countless articles following her career. Trio TLC were
photographed for the cover in fire fighters’ gear, referencing the fact that member Left Eye burned
down the house of then-boyfriend and NFL star Andre Rison. The first non-photograph cover of Vibe
was an illustration of late singer Aaliyah by well-known artist/illustrator Alvaro; this was Aaliyah's
very first appearance on the cover as well. Other famous cover subjects are Brandy, Snoop Dogg,
Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Amerie, Jennifer Lopez, Keyshia Cole, Janet Jackson, Lil Wayne, The Fugees,
Eminem, T.I., R. Kelly, Michael Jackson (whom Quincy Jones' daughter Kidada had dressed in hip-hop
clothing, reportedly for the first and only time in the entertainer's career), Ciara, who also appeared
on the cover numerous times and rap legend Tupac Shakur's famous cover story in which he reveals
important details about his non-fatal 1994 NYC shooting (two years before his death in Las Vegas,
Nevada)
In 2008 vibe magazine launched the “best rapper alive competition” which shows its importance and
stance in the R&B world. Most rappers although honoured at receiving the award have announced
that there is no one best rapper as all rappers have different styles and different ways of delivering
their music. The creation of this award does however show how far vibe magazine has come in the
last decade taking the R&B and Rap world by storm.
Vibe magazine has the backing of its investors InterMedia partners who have developed into a large
media group, it also funds itself by selling advertisement to many different companies, this is helpful
to such a successful magazine that target a certain audience because clothes or other products that
are aimed at this sort of audience will benefit and pay large amounts of money to have
advertisement in such a successful magazine. The magazine also has its typical retail price which
helps income. Groups like ‘Nike’ and ‘Ministry of sound’ may find Vibe magazine useful to advertise
in as the audience they aim at is exactly what Vibe magazine is aiming at.
