Green light for 6th form consortium

Karting Champs!

Debden Park High School wins national schools karting championship

School’s OUT but winning’s IN, as Debden Park High School’s Super Green team finished first in this year’s British Schools Karting Championship, which took place at Whilton Mill in Northamptonshire on July 19. They are also the first champs to have also won their regional and local heats. 1,000 students signed up at the beginning of the challenge before the knock-out style series of heats finally whittled down to the triumphant team of three.

The racers Ben Green (16), Oliver Longshaw (16) and Jaiden Fenton (15) are exiting Year 11 students at Debden Park High School and will no longer be able to race together as a team, as the requirement from the British Automobile Racing Club who organise the championship, is for team members aged between 13 and 18 to attend the same school. The final saw 29 teams go head to head, including one other team from Debden Park High School, and on one of the most challenging courses in the UK.

Their success is even more impres-sive given the boys have had a busy year studying for their GCSEs and so were unable to dedicate as much practice time as they would have liked. It is not just the students efforts that have been recognised. The schools’ PE teacher Graham Tongate and karting trainer, who introduced the championship to the school (initially as a reward incen-

tive) was presented with a framed photo memento at the leavers’ prom.

Karting instils confidence and im-proves self-esteem in students, and although the championship is inclu-sive of girls, parent Sue Longshaw, along with sponsor Howard Green, plans to mentor an all girls’ karting team to give female students extra encouragement.

Although the winning team’s stu-dents will be moving on to pastures new, the school will continue to foster the talents of tomorrow’s Jenson Buttons and Lewis Hamil-tons. Roll on 2015 registration. It looks like Debden Park is coming to get you.

PE teacher Graham Tongate (centre) is flanked by the winning Super Green team of Oliver Longshaw, Ben Green and Jaiden Fenton

Following a two year proposal process put forward by Essex County Council and the Education Funding Agency, local teachers and students rejoice as the Department of Education announced in July that a joint bid to bring sixth form education to four secondary schools in the district has been successful.

The Epping Forest District Sixth Form Consortium comprises Roding Valley High School in Loughton,

Epping St John’s School, Debden Park High School and King Harold Business and Enterprise Academy in Waltham Abbey. The consortium will extend teaching to 16 to 18 year olds, offering nearly 600 places by Septem-ber 2016. All schools, with the exception of King Harold, will expand to accommodate additional classrooms.

Avril Mills, founder of the Dream Factory charity, was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Honours List for ‘charitable services to children and young people’. Avril set up the charity six years ago following the death of her nine year-old son, Oliver, from Leukaemia in 1999. “I am so shocked” said Avril, “When I got the letter I had to read it three times to make sure I’d got it cor-rect—and then I burst into tears”. She was told of the honour on June 13th, on what would have been her son’s 24th birthday. “Oliver is why I started the charity and it’s lovely that the list is made public on his birthday. Avril added: “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of my family, close friends and volunteers.” Avril began fundraising in 1994 when she raised money for Barts and the London Hospital. She then worked voluntarily for the charity Hopes and Dreams which aims to grant the dreams of sick children. In 2000 she was employed as a part-time fundraiser at Haven House Children’s Hospice, Woodford Green, and quickly progressed to events manager in 2004. In 2008 she founded The Dream Factory which has now granted 279 dreams for children and young adults with life-limiting conditions. The charity is currently working on more than 50 new dream requests and recently granted a dream to 15 year-old Georgia Craigie (bottom right) to experience a One Direction concert. In the years since she founded The Dream Factory she has been able to grant dreams leaving these children and teenagers with special memories which helps to ease their life of constant visits to hospital.

PGA supports the Dream Factory The PGA in Essex has chosen to support the Dream Factory charity. This will include giving a donation to the charity for every birdie or eagle achieved by its mem-bers during the season. The charity has been selected by current captain Mark Bishop, from Toot Hill Golf Club, near Ongar. The Dream Factory will also be supported next year after the next captain - David Hawkins, from Wanstead Golf Club - agreed to continue the partnership for 2015.

Meanwhile Geoff Davis, the new captain at Toot Hill Golf Club is also supporting The Dream Factory during his year and top European tour golf pro Simon Khan, who plays at Toot Hill, is continuing to support the charity through his involvement as a patron. PGA in Essex secretary Colin Reynolds said: "As an Essex-based charity it fitted our plans and having met with Avril recently I was impressed with her dedication and the wonderful work that the charity performs. The PGA in Essex holds about 25 tournaments each season. The flagship tournaments are the Essex Open at Wanstead Golf Club next May and the Essex PGA Championships at The Burstead Golf Club in October this year. It is anticipated that The Dream Factory will have a presence at both these tournaments plus some of Pro-Am tournaments. Mr Reynolds added: "In addition we plan to make a contribution based on the number of birdies and eagles our members achieve during the season. This amount will be decided prior to the start of our season in October. This means the more successful our Profes-sionals are then the better it is for our chosen charity!"
