2 l Madeley Matters

Back in the early part of the year, Madeley Town council working along withTelford & Wrekin Council environment services jointly set about somelandscape improvement works on a number of our prominent gateway traffic islands.

The principal aim of the works was to thin out and remove the unwanted under growth which was restricting the space and height of the more highly valued native trees. These works will help to promote new growth and restore the natural shape to the trees that have been chosen to retain, as a direct result of the improved natural day light that will now benefit the remaining trees.

The tree thinning works were planned and carried outside of the bird nesting season so as to not impact any possible nesting. Once completed a thorough litter pick was carried out and various bulky items removed that had beendeposited and had remained hidden for many years.

Parish Traffic Island Improvements...

Before

After

In recent months an exciting new group which was formed from Legacy funding through ‘Telford @50’ last year was the ‘Telford Woods’ Social Enterprise; a partnership between Telford & Wrekin Council and the Small Woods Association, which is based at the Green Wood Centre in nearby Coalbrookdale.

Working alongside Telford MIND services located at Court StreetMedical Practice, Madeley, which acts as a source of referrals of participants for the various woodland projects that have now got underway.

Back in January saw one of the early sessions of this group carry out a litter pick on Madeley Court Pitmound and as you can see there was a really good turn out which resulted in approximately 25/30 bags of litter being picked during a two hour session.

Many thanks to all who came along on the day to assist in what proved to be a successful session and as you can see the van was completely full by the end of the afternoon.

For more up to date news on how the group is doing please follow them on www.facebook.com/telfordwoodforgood

When Telford Mind moved into the new Court Street Medical Practice building by the ski slope, little did the organisation know that a fantastic partnership would develop.

The partnership between Telford Mind and Court Street Medical Practice is known locally as Court Street Community and, since starting in May 2018, has supported over 1200 people with mental health support, one-to-one sessions, coffee mornings and peer-led groups. This offers sustainable support to people who benefit from it most.

Practice Partner, Dr Teresa McDonnell, says: “When we started this venture, we had no idea it would turn into the success it has. It means patients can be supported in different ways as well as medication in a safe, friendly and welcoming environment. Working with Telford Mind means that mental health is right at the heart of everything we do.”

The Wellbeing Centre is fully funded by the practice while Telford Mind rely on local fundraising to ensure they can continue to offer the vital support people need.

Anstice Community Trust (ACT) is very pleased to welcome Gemma Aston as the newly appointed Centre Director. Gemma comes to the Anstice from Ironbridge Gorge Museums, where she has spent the last 5 years as Conference and Banqueting Manager.

Gemma started her career as a professional actress; having trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. During her time as a jobbing actress she also worked as a theatre technician and sound engineer. After starting a family, she taught Drama before creating a professional touring Theatre Company.

Before moving to Shropshire with her family, Gemma ran a Community Arts Centre in Surrey where she helped develop their café, learning studio and theatre space into a thriving community hub with a successful programme of events.

Although Gemma was born in Surrey, she has a very strong connection with Shropshire and Madeley in particular. Her father John Aston was brought up on Coalport Road, next to the All Nations, where he lived with his grandparents Joseph Edward Geary Aston, who was a kiln man at Coalport and Doris Gertrude Aston (nee Whittingham) who was a china painter at Coalport. His aunt Ina and uncle Clyde (amongst 3 other aunts and uncles!) also lived in the house and Gemma would be fascinated to know if anyone knew them or has heard any stories about them!

Gemma’s father went on to study at Shrewsbury Art School, where he met Gemma’s Mum, Martina. After marrying and starting a family, John and Martina moved to London but now Gemma’s daughter is studying Graphics at Shrewsbury College, the same building where her grandparents met!

Gemma is very excited about her new role at the Anstice “My Dad would have been so proud to know I was going to be working for the people of Madeley and running the Anstice. It feels like I have come home!” She goes on to say “I can’t wait to get stuck in to this project. It’s going to be a challenge at times, but with the support from the community and Madeley Town Council, I know it will be a huge success! I am committed to making this a venue for the community run by the community, keeping the stories of the past alive whilst looking to the future through a great new programme of events and performances.”

Gemma’s post is funded for 3 years, thanks tothe Power to Change, National Lottery fund.

6 l Madeley Matters

The Anstice family connection with Madeley Wood Company1760 Bedlam Furnaces established by Madeley Wood Company. 1803 Upon death of William Reynolds, his son Joseph Reynolds takes over the Madeley Wood Company with William Anstice (aged 21) a nephew who had worked for Reynolds since 1796. Business was renamed Reynolds & Anstice & Co.1805 Hills Lane pit opened. Madeley Wood Hall built for Anstice family (moved from Bedlam Hall).1806 Meadow pit sunk by William Anstice.1807 Birth of William Reynolds Anstice Jnr, the first son of William Anstice. Reputedly first coal found in Meadow pit was burnt in Madeley Wood Hall in celebration of the birth.1826 After making a profit of £1,710 from their iron trade, the Madeley Wood Company then made a loss in the next seven years. Furnaces probably sited too far away from coal production, hence later move to Blists Hill.1831 Miners’ strike. Yeomanry deployed to protect ironworks and collieries. Eventually return to work after several months.1832 First blast furnace built at Blists Hill. Bedlam furnaces abandoned.1834 Shawfield pit opened.1840 Second blast furnace & steam blowing engine house built at Blists Hill.1841 Bedlam brickworks bought by the Madeley Wood Company.1842 Miners’ strike. Majority return back at work following assurances of Ironmasters.1844 Third blast furnace built at Blists Hill.1850 Death of William Anstice (aged 68). Buried in the Anstice tomb in St Michael’s church. A very able manager he concentrated on the mining aspects of the family business. His son John Anstice (aged 40) took over as manager.1851 Blists Hill Brick & Tile works and canal side cement mill established by Madeley Wood Company. 1852 Anstice family provide a school and mission room at the Lloyds, Ironbridge.1857 Shropshire Canal closed apart from the Hay incline plane which remained open with agreement of local colliery owners and it continued in some use until 1894. It was permanently closed in 1907.1858 Joseph Reynolds died leaving his shares in company to John Anstice.1864 Madeley Wood Company worst recorded accident at Brick Kiln Leasow pit (nine miners killed) Kemberton pit completed. Connected to Halesfield colliery. 1867 Death of John Anstice (aged 57). The company was taken over by his sons Richard Edmund (aged 18) and John Arthur (aged 21), with support from their uncle William Reynolds Anstice (aged 60) 1868 Work started on building Anstice Memorial Institute as a tribute to John Anstice. Opened 1870.1869 Great Western railways provide siding to serve Kemberton colliery.1875 Anstice Memorial hall reopened after fire destroyed original building.1881 Death of William Reynolds Anstice aged 74. Mr. Anstice was one of the original members of the Iron and Steel Institute, and continued to be a member, and to take a lively interest in its proceedings, till the time of his death1891 Blists Hill pit abandoned.1905 Simon Cope Cadman (father of James Cadman) was appointed manager of Madeley Wood Company due to ill health of Richard Edmund Anstice.1908 Two of the Blists Hill furnaces blown out. 1910 Kemberton pit disaster (7 miners killed when the cage fell 388 Ft. to the bottom of the shaft. They were carrying out night repairs on the Sunday)1912 Blists Hill Furnaces were not reopened after National Strike, with upwards of 200 workmen losing their jobs. Drop in demand for ironstone puts several pits under threat of closure. Office staff transferred to Kemberton.1915 Death of Lieutenant John Spencer Ruscombe Anstice (aged 21) whilst in action at Gallipoli He was the family member that might have taken over running the business. Shawfield and Styches pits closed.1918 Madeley Wood Co. Ltd is formed as Limited Company to succeed Madeley Wood Co. (directorships remain with Anstice family. Sir John Arthur Anstice, Sir Robert Henry. Anstice and Mr Richard Edmund Anstice.) All three Anstice members die in the 1920’s.1920 Last coal extracted from Meadow pit (water pumped until August). Men moved to Kemberton pit which fortunately had a rail link. Kemberton employed over 600 men. Shropshire canal by Blists Hill was filled in.1923 Demolition of Madeley Wood Hall.1926 Major sale of properties by Madeley Wood Company at Anstice Hall.1929 Death of Colonel Sir John Arthur Anstice (aged 83) Ends family involvement in Madeley Wood Company. James Cadman buys Madeley Wood Company Limited.

The clearance of the known asbestos has been successfully completed by CES. This does not mean that we are necessarily totally clear of asbestos as more might be uncovered as the major strip out begins.

Work has now started on stripping out of the downstairs area which will begin to reveal the hidden beauty and true significance of the Anstice. Removal of the wooden cladding that was installed in the 1960’s has already revealed lovely painted brickwork as well as unexpected windows and archways that had been blocked in and hidden from view. Every effort will be made to retain and incorporate these features into the refurbished building, where practicable.

You may have also seen on the car park that the foundations for the new lift have been started. The work is being checked by an archaeologist to make sure that the excavations do not reveal anything of historical importance. Again, we thank you in advance for your patience and co-operation during these essential works to bring this building back into full use and accessible to the whole community.

We will try to keep any disturbance to a minimum. However, if there is a problem, please contact Pave Aways site manager, Tony Martin on 07738800344 or you can email [email protected]

Sutton Hill Village GreenApril 2019 UpdateThe Sutton Hill Village Green Committee has been ‘hibernating’ for the last two years – still functioning if you look closely enough, but waiting for the spring to burst into life. For the Village Green ‘spring’ comes in the form of a coordinated, long term plan for the whole site which builds on Q Hotel’s and Telford & Wrekin Council’s past support as its land owners. As owners they retain responsibility and liability for the site, making it essential that we have agreement on how tasks are allocated and identify appropriate opportunity for the community to be involved in its management.

‘Spring’ has now arrived for the Village Green in more ways than one. As flowers are blossoming so is the plan under the expert guidance of an ecologist from Telford & Wrekin Council. Hotel management, T&WC, Madeley Town Council, Hub OnThe Hill and the SHVG Committee are all involved. The Sir Alexander Fleming School is being consulted about how the Green might best benefit our children. The plan will be made public and feedback will be welcomed. No big changes will be proposed and in the meantime some works such as creating wildflower beds and refreshing the wood-chip footpaths are being organised.

Whilst we don’t have carpets of woodland flowers yet, plantings from previous years are showing signs of spreading with notably more bluebells and snowdrops springing up in the Sutton Way woodland area. Crocus and daffodil plantings have continued to provide early colour. The village green is for the benefit of the whole Sutton Hill community and visitors, with pleasant paths, attractive views, wildlife in all its forms, and providing a springboard for appreciating the varied opportunities offered by our wider green environment. As such we ask that everybody plays their part in protecting the area for the enjoyment and benefit of all users, including its wildlife.

There is a small group of local people involved in the ongoing management of the Village Green and we are currently looking for new members. Involvement could mean coming along to a site work party, helping communicate the future vision for the site, making records of wildlife seen or supporting others using the site. Ring 01952 585529 or 276391 if you would like to register your interest.

Please keep a lookout for the proposed Village Green Management Plan being publicised and for notice of the Sutton Hill Village Green AGM when we would welcome new supporters.

The Hub on the HillOver the last few months the Hub on the Hill has been very busy and there have been a number of changes. We would like to welcome Hannah who is our new operations manager, I am sure the regular users have already met Hannah but if you wish to know what is happening at the Hub please pop in and see her.

Recently we have had a lot of activity in the centre and this has included the opening of our new kitchen within the café. The bigger kitchen means that we can now offer a wider menu as well as catering for events. As well as the new kitchen we will soon be starting the final phase of the refurbishment of Severn Walk, this will provide us with new modern meeting rooms for people to book as well as a new training kitchen for people to come and learn to cook in.

Recently we were lucky to be part of the Depave project with Shropshire Wildlife Trust in partnership with the Environment Agency. This has meant that we now have a lovely new courtyard area for local people to enjoy. The courtyard now has a number of raised beds full of plants including fruit alongside our own bug hotel which we are all keenly watching to see who takes up residence.

As well as the changes to the Hub itself, a number of activities have taken place including a family disco, arts and crafts in partnership with Sutton Hill Church, and an Easter Egg hunt on Good Friday. Over the next few months we have some big plans including the opening of the youth club for a second night in September. We are also planning our summer Fit N Fed programme which this year will run for 3 days a week during the middle 4 weeks of the school summer holidays. These activities will also include a family day once a week so that more people can get active.

It is exciting times for the Hub on the Hill so please follow us on facebook to keep in touch with all the activities and please pop in to see Hannah and the staff.

The inclusion of an article in this publication does not necessarily imply a recommendation of its aims, policies or methods, as all articles in Madeley Matters reflect solely the opinions of the authors writing in a personal capacity, unless otherwise state”.
