The BHP nozzle is used in the processing of thermoplastics. With the BHP nozzle Herzog has designed a system which allows a single through-going melt flow channel. Therefore a much bigger flow channel is possible and that is responsi-ble for a reduced pressure drop. With this single channel principle the so called “Memory effect” can be avoided. With the single channel system a cleaning of the unit is done within very short time. Ex-periences have shown, that in this respect the BHP nozzle shares similarities with an open nozzle. Compared to the needle shut-off system the melt flow with the BHP system happens to be separated quite away from the sprue bushing. For certain conditions this longer open bore might be a disadvantage. The bolt mechanism is placed across the melt flow channel and is so designed that an opening process will be activated automatically by reaching an overpressure. Using a proper coating technology, on specific parts, increases the life time of each part. Modules for filters, mixers and GAIM-application complete the range of shut-off nozzle products.

2. Integrated actuator The pneumatic or hydraulic actuator is specially designed for Herzog shut-off nozzles and is equipped with heat-resistant seals. The actuator is integrated into the nozzle and shows a compact unit.

The actuating cylinder is moved pneumatically or hydraulically on the machine control unit by means of specific setting data.

Advantage: • No assembly errors due to integrated actuator • lift setting • power output or alignment is eliminated by the compact design • If the melt pressure exceeds 250 bar, the nozzle opens automatically (safety device) The design of the control cylinder depends on the following operational energy sources: • Compressed air: 5 - 10 bar (Attention: use air clean and dry). • Hydraulic: 40 - 70 bar.

The control cylinder is coupled to the nozzle, therefore heat radiation from the heater band may result. Hydraulic oil may degenerate at a certain temperature. Because of this a water cooling system is integrated into the hydraulic control unit. The water flow rate has to be regulated up to 20 - 60°C on the actuator.

A longer tip may avoid any collision. In such cases a tip heater band with a separate con-trol unit may be needed.

Actuator with stroke control > process control, safety aspect

A temperature resistant cylinder houses the sensor which detects the position of the pis-ton ensuring that the nozzle is in an “open“ or „closed“ position.

GIT Gas Module (Type GM) > cycle time, quality on injection moulded parts With the shut-off nozzle the gas is injected through the core of the gate. To use the BHP nozzle for the GIT process, the tip is changed. A special valve seals the gas feed area to make it completely polymer-seal. Our robust, maintenance free gas module ensures a safe process. Optimally the module is used in combination with the shut-off nozzle, but for certain proc-esses the module can also be used without the shut-off nozzle.


6. Modules

Machine requirements control unit Special attention must be taken to lever and shaft alignment when the actuator is mounted machine side.

To operate smoothly, the following conditions must be fulfilled: • Double-actuated cylinder • Max. force on lever 1500 N • Only when nozzle is open, injection pressure may be applied • Movement of piston at least 16 mm


Melt mixer > improved quality on injection moulded parts

A homogenized melt (in colour and temperature) reduces the reject rate and produces a considerable improvement in the quality of the injection-moulded parts. We favour the X-Mixer technology.


Melt Filter > preventive strategy

Keeping free feed openings in the hot runner or filtering of the polymer mass in re-claimed material processing requires the use of a melt filter. We offer two types of melt filter: • Gap filter principle

9. Installation Instructions

Max. working conditions: 3000 bar at 400°C

Leakage: Between needle and guide there is a melt film which prevents needle from blocking. The melt film will be continuously renewed and will eventually leak out of the nozzle. Note: In case of machine down-time the nozzle temperature needs to be lowered. Some plastics produce gases if they stay for a longer time in a heated environment. There is a risk that the gas may escape explosively through the nozzle orifice.

Gap can be between 0.5 und 2.5mm - Min. 0.5mm! Gap dimension between body and adapter ring may vary to a max. of 0.1mm:

Tighten flange screws at 4 intervals in a crosswise action: 1st interval = all screws evenly prefixing

2nd interval = 70% of tightening torque

3rd interval = 90% of tightening torque

4th interval = 100% of tightening torque

The following cleaning methods may be used: • propane gas • oil bath • fluidized bath • micro-blasting Check each individual part for wear or damage. Replace when necessary with genuine Herzog manufactured parts.

Never heat steel parts above 520°C! Actuator never heat above 200°C!

Service on actuator: Servicing the pneumatically or hydraulically actuator, page 9,10. Parts may vary according to customer specifications. Benefit from our cleaning service: The nozzle is taken apart, checked and repaired if necessary.

11. Servicing of pneumatic actuator

Our actuators do not normally require any maintenance. However, if the actuator is working under extreme conditions, replacement seals maybe necessary. • Take the unit apart as shown in the exploded drawing • Carefully remove the seals • Never heat actuator above 200°C! • Never heat steel parts above 520°C! • Check all parts for wear

Mounting instructions: • All parts need to be absolutely clean and free of any damage • Grease all moving parts with Teflon paste (less than 180°C) before assembling • Pay attention to the assembly direction for the special seals Pos. 12 • All parts are temperature resistant up to 200°C

12. Servicing of hydraulic actuator

Mounting instructions: • All parts need to be absolutely clean and free of any damage • Grease all moving parts with Teflon paste (less than 180°C) before assembly • Fork tip (Pos.8) and retainer (Pos.3) secure with glue • All parts are temperature resistant up to 200°C.

We offer our customers a cleaning service. The control cylinder is taken apart, checked and repaired if necessary. Spare part orders according to our order sheet on page 11. Let us know the stamped ID-No.
