MAB ONLINE MAGAZINE
Back to where it all started for MAB Monthly, the high
school baseball preview. Several years ago, we decided to
start an annual baseball preview. A few months later, we de-
cided on a monthly magazine, and the baseball preview is one
of the 12 issues we publish a year. We will also bring you our
football and basketball previews this year as we did last.
This year, we do bring a bit of a different format. In-
stead of simply putting rosters in this issue, we wrote pre-
views, just as we did for football and basketball. We did add
college rosters this year for local teams and for Indiana’s divi-
sion 1 schools. This, of course, is a precursor to our broad-
casts of high school baseball this season, We will bring you
most of the games of the RailCats High School Baseball Chal-
lenge, and a full slate of baseball and softball games as well.
Don’t forget that this spring and summer will have cov-
erage of the NFL Draft later this month and the NBA Draft in
June.
As always thanks to you for reading, and thanks to all of
our sponsors for helping to make it possible. Without either of
you, we would not even exist. Thanks again, and we hope you
enjoy this issue!

RailCats High School
Baseball Challenge
By MAB Monthly Staff
Since the team was founded, the
Gary SouthShore RailCats have made a
strong commitment to the City of Gary
and to the community at large. Part of
that commitment has been shown in the
form of the RailCats
High School Baseball
Challenge. The Chal-
lenge has had some
changes over the years
and this year’s version is
no exception.
This year’s Challenge will be pre-
sented in a condensed, 12 game format
featuring some classic matchups, con-
ference rivalries and non-conference
matchups.
The Porter County Conference
kicks things off with Kouts taking on
LaCrosse on Saturday the 7th. The
Challenge continues with a classic
RailCats Challenge matchup on Friday
the 13th as Illinois rivals T.F. North
will play T.F. South. The nightcap will
pit North Judson and Knox.
The following day brings a triple
header, starting again with PCC action
as the defending 2A
runner-up Hanover Cen-
tral Wildcats play South
Central. The day contin-
ues with two non-
conference matchups as
Kankakee Valley plays
Edison and Hammond Academy will
take on Calumet.
The following Friday, the 20th
will start off with River Forest and East
Chicago Central in non-conference ac-
tion. Lowell and Hobart will play in the
night cap in a Northwest Crossroads
Conference battle. The second triple
header of the challenge comes on Sat-
urday, April 21st and features the three
Gary public schools. West Side will
play Victory Christian to start things
off. Griffith and Chesterton will square
off in the middle game and Lew Wal-
lace will take on Roosevelt as the day
wraps up.
The final game of the Challenge
will be an interstate battle featuring
Chicago Christian and Marquette. All
games, of course are subject to change
if the weather plays havoc on the
schedule as it has in the past.
The matchups promise to bring
some exciting baseball in one of the
best minor league ballparks in the Mid-
west. The RailCats will continue the
tradition community service and pro-
moting high school baseball in the re-
gion.
Mid America Broadcasting will
bring you most of the games of the
Challenge live. All of the games that
we cover will also be available on our
archive for the players and fans who
would like to relive the all of the ac-
tion. Check out the schedule on page
51 of this issue and our website at

Duneland Conference Preview By Brandon Vickery, Pow Wow Radio
When it comes to evaluating the baseball talent
level in the Duneland Athletic Conference, the Indi-
ana High School Baseball Coaches’ Association pre-
season poll says it all. Four of the top 16 teams in
4A in the state of Indiana are members of the DAC.
Lake Central enters the season as the conference fa-
vorite and number one team in the state, following
by Crown Point (eighth), Chesterton (thirteenth), La-
Porte (fifteenth) and Portage (sixteenth).
Chesterton Trojans
The Chesterton Trojans
could be poised for a breakout
season behind pitching ace Jake
Post. Post will be among the
top hurlers in Northwest Indi-
ana this year. The Trojans fin-
ished last season 16-10 after falling to Crown
Point 3-0 in the sectional semifinals. After
finishing in the middle of the pack Chester-
ton has hopes of cracking into the top three
this year. The team has done a 180 degree
turnaround since going 4-19 just two years
ago. Post, who went 6-3 with a 2.66 ERA,
verbally committed to pitch for Ohio State in
October; selecting the Buckeyes over other
Division I schools like Michigan State and
Cincinnati. Bobby Humphreys will join Post
in the rotation, while Spencer Sutton and K.J.
Zelenika return to the lineup. Chesterton got
the job done against schools that it was ex-
pected to beat a year ago, but
the Trojans went a combined 1-
8 against Lake Central, Crown
Point, LaPorte and Portage.
That stat will have to improve if
the Trojans want a shot at the
top spot in the DAC.
Page 11 MAB MONTHLY
Crown Point Bulldogs
Everything started
clicking for Crown Point
late in the season as the
Bulldogs deep postseason
run resulted in a Regional
championship. The team
eventually lost 9-2 to Fort
Wayne Carroll in the South Bend Riley
Semistate to see its run come to an end. The
Bulldogs had recorded postseason victories
over LaPorte (3-1), Chesterton (3-0), Portage
(4-1), Penn (2-1) and Elkhart Central (4-2).
Power bat Jose Andrade and number one
pitcher Nick Nauracy are both gone, but Joe
Hopman, Jake Lineman, Zack Plesac and
Ronnie Plesac all return. Head coach Steve
Strayer always seems to find a way to win,
posting a 442-161 mark in 20 seasons, ten at
Crown Point.

Lake Central Indians
Lake Central is the odds
on favorite to win the Dune-
land Athletic Conference, en-
tering the season atop the
state’s preseason poll. Out-
field Chase Fieldhouse, who
hit .453 with ten home runs and 39 RBIs
last season, is back for his senior year.
Jimmy McNamara will anchor the rotation
once again, coming off a 7-1 season during
which he posted a microscopic 0.79 ERA.
Taylor Lehnert, who will join his teammate
McNamara playing Division I baseball at
Central Michigan next year, is set as the
team’s number two starter. Lehnert went 4-
2 with a 2.85 ERA as a junior before im-
proving his stuff during the travel ball sea-
son playing for the Indiana Bulls. The In-
dians were Sectional 1 champions before
losing 8-3 in the opener of the LaPorte Re-
gional against Elkhart Central. LC is hop-
ing to continue what has been a banner year
for boys sports in St. John.
Page 12 MAB MONTHLY
LaPorte Slicers
Twenty LaPorte wins was
only good enough for third place
in the DAC last season. LaPorte
lost its stranglehold on the top
spot in the conference. The Sli-
cers were hit hard by graduation and will have
to depend on several young players in order to
return to the top of the conference. Starting
pitcher Connor Podkul graduated after going 8-3
with a 1.33 ERA. Catcher Kyle Upp, who
hit .434 and drove in 24 runs, is gone. Shortstop
Cody Dykema, who hit .330, graduated as well.
The roster has talent, including designated hitter
David Eldrige who hit .352 last year, but the Sli-
cers lack the experience of the other DAC pow-
erhouses.
Merrillville Pirates
Merrillville’s baseball
program is in the difficult posi-
tion of attempting to turn a team
around while competing in the
DAC. The Pirates went 8-21
last season, losing 6-1 to Port-
age in the first round of the sectional. The Mer-
59 Indiana Avenue, Valparaiso Just off the Courthouse Square
Phone 219-464-7102 or 219-462-0404
rillville season included some bright spots,
like conference wins over Valparaiso and La-
Porte and close losses to team like Munster,
Portage, Chesterton Michigan City, Crown
Point and Valpo. The team’s best pitcher,
Nick Feliciano, has graduated, so Joe Fe-
liciano (3-4, 4.15 ERA) will get the chance
to step in as the staff ace. Aaron Dye will
highlight the lineup after hitting .318 in
2011.
Michigan City Wolves
Michigan City’s sea-
son wrapped up with a 9-2
loss to Chesterton in the
first round of last year’s
sectional. The Wolves only
two conference wins of the year both came
against Merrillville. Head coach David Ortiz
is attempting to get the program turned
around, but this year the roster will be inex-
perienced. Senior catcher Lane Van Sickle
hit .308 a year ago, while junior pitcher/ third
baseman Andrew Ray posted a .333 average.

Portage Indians
Portage has not captured
a sectional championship since
1994, a drought that the current
players hope comes to an end
this season. The Indians have
reached the sectional final two
straight years, but saw their season end both
times, falling 4-1 to Crown Point in 2011.
Right handed pitcher Cody Jackson is a big
loss, as is power bat Tony Cheky, who is now
roaming the outfield at Michigan State.
However, Western Illinois bound senior
Gabe Avevedo is the centerpiece of a talented
lineup. Acevedo enjoyed a breakout junior
season during which he hit .455 with four
homers and 47 runs batted in. Kris Spring-

man will take over as the team’s ace
pitcher, with Travis Marsh, David Jercha
and Chris Bruno all expected to see time on
the hill. DH/catcher Zach Thorn and out-
fielder Andrew Brown will also be impor-
tant members of the Indians lineup.
Valparaiso Vikings
The graduation loss of
Jerrick Suiter, who is now at
TCU, will hurt Dave Coyle’s
squad. Outfielders John Ole-
jniczak and Greg Thome are
expected to take over more
prominent roles in the lineup.
Life without Suiter could be a grind for the
Vikes, who fell 15-7 in the sectional semifi-
nal against Portage to conclude the year
with a 13-11 mark. Valpo will likely finish
in the middle of the pack and hover around
the .500 mark again this year.

Greater Southshore Conference
Preview By Rich Sapper, MAB Monthly Staff Writer
Bishop Noll Warriors
It seems like the Warriors
have been one of the top teams in
the GSSC and are almost always
considered contenders for a sec-
tional title. Last year’s edition of
the Warriors earned a share of the conference
title. They were not, however, able to reach
the goal of a sectional championship as they
ran into eventual 2A runner up Hanover Cen-
tral in the sectional semi-final.
The good news for Head Coach Paul
Wirtz, the cupboard is defiantly not bare.
While the Warriors lose P Alec Rodriguez,
1B A.J. Cardenas, and P Eric Rodriguez to
graduation, the remainder of the team returns
from last year’s squad. This includes senior
shortstop Kody Alayon who hits for average
(.447 in his junior campaign), drives in runs,
and steals bases for the Warriors. His double
on the roster this season, leaving Josh
Dronen as the lone returner with much ex-
perience on the mound. Look for young
pitchers to make a difference, including
Kody Lemly, who may be one of the best
freshman pitching prospects in the area.
Marquette Blazers
Marquette ended last
season by losing in a close
contest against Triton in the
sectional last season and will
start the season with a sched-
ule that includes New Prairie, LaCrosse,
South Central and Frontier.
North Newton Spartans
New Spartans head
coach Mike Carden takes over
the head coaching positions at
his alma mater after spending
the last couple of seasons as
the JV coach at the school. The
former 1B/DH brings a wealth of experience
Page 17 MAB MONTHLY
play partner, Junior Jon Frankovich returns at
2nd base as well. Cody Moskovsky returns
with his bat and behind the dish as do out-
fielders Danny Osebuera and Larry Criser.
Look for Danny Pobereyko to be a solid con-
tributor in both the infield and on the mound.
Josh Galgan, also the quarterback on the
football team will be a leader in the pitching
staff as well.
Calumet Warriors
Calumet was hard hit by
graduation at the end of last
season, losing 6 players off of
their roster. The Warriors, who
fell to Knox in the opening
round of the sectional last
year, will have some experience this year on
the mound, something that they lacked last
season. In the previous campaign, head
coach Roger Abzill used a 5 man rotation
while allowing his pitchers to develop.
Among the returnees on the hill for the War-
riors is K.C. Waleski, who pitched very well
at the US SteelYard last year, and Junior
Marcus Jackson.
Sophomore Danny Urbasewski leads a
lineup that also returns Jesse Rivera, Colton
Meeks, and Jose Rodriguez.
Edison Eagles
Edison fell in the opening
round of the sectional to confer-
ence rival Wheeler last season
and will replace several key
components this year as well.
While most of Tony Hicks’ lineup returns
for the Eagles, pitching will be lacking in
experience. Staff Ace Brian Creech is not
to a squad that is looking to return to it’s
glory days.
The lineup will be anchored by the
middle infield combination of Chad Schultz
and Brady Hallier. Carden will also be rely-
ing on a young pitching staff after losing
Mike Montemayer and Wes Pemberto.
River Forest Ingots
This year’s Ingots have
nearly everyone back to com-
pete this season only losing 4
year starter C Tyler Hanson (St.
Joe) to graduation. River Forest
will be led by two of the area's bests pitchers
in Geno Flores, Christopher Lauderback.
They will be a part of the rotation that will
also feature Bryan Avalos. Last year’s top
hitter Jason Temple returns along with Dex-
ter Nalls.
Both Temple and Nalls will be ex-
pected to carry a big part of the load at the
Page 18 MAB MONTHLY
plate. Opposing catchers will have fits with
Temple who was also perfect on steal at-
tempts last season. JJ Pennington also returns
in the outfield. Look for O'Shea Owens to
make a serious contribution to Head Coach
Mark Zimmerle’s squad, giving the Ingots a
great foundation to build on.
Wheeler Bearcats
Wheeler is a perennial con-
tender for a conference cham-
pionship, and despite losing
several key players, this year
should be no exception. Head
Coach Josh Long will be without the services
of Casey Nader, one of his top pitchers from
last year, all-around athlete Sam O’Shea who
was outstanding on the mound and with his
bat, and Josh Holmes.
Despite that, the Bearcats will return
one of the most seasoned lineups in the re-
gion led by the right side of the infield in 1B
Nick Naspinski and 2B David Bolla who will
Page 19 MAB MONTHLY
likely continue to lead off. Matt Ittersagen
will anchor the rotation for Wheeler.
Whiting Oilers
Chicago State University was
able to take Elliot Bajda, arguably
one of the best players in Whiting
history. Despite that the Whiting
offense should have little trouble
with getting on base with the return
of 3B Gio Cruz, P/1B Coty Sparks, IF/P Matt
Dvorscak, IF Justin Jendreas, IF/P Matt Bu-
latovich and P/IF Mike Casillas.
The pitching staff for head coach Kev-
ing Lenz will be a strength as well with
Sparks, Dvorscak, Casillas, and Matt Lowe
throwing in Oil City Stadium making the
Oilers a legitimate contender to win the
GSSC and possibly a sectional this year.

Clark Pioneers
Clark has been a consis-
tently high performing team
for the past several years and
this year should be no differ-
ent. The Pioneers feature sev-
eral experienced players who
have not only excelled in baseball, but other
sports for the Roberstdale school as well. En-
rique Zamora is one such athlete that will be
a solid pitcher when not manning the hot cor-
ner. The double play combination of SS

tioned will also log some time on the hill
Gavit Gladiators
Gavit is going to be very
young this year after graduat-
ing most of last year’s squad
including Aveeno Nasiloski
who is playing at Chicago State
this season. Look for James Thompson to do
a little bit of everything from playing multi-
ple positions in the field to hitting from both
sides of the plate. Mookie Davis will pitch
and play short for Gavit.

Conference, Bowman and East
Chicago Central Preview by Rich Sapper, MAB Monthly Staff Writer
Hammond Wildcats
Hammond High has
struggled in baseball in recent
years, but has been developing
at a rapid pace. A very young
Wildcats team will be lead by
senior cathcher Eli Harris, who
has proven a capable defensive catcher who
handles pitchers well and who hits
above .300 consistently. The only other sen-
ior on the team is 3B Anthony Davilia.
Morton Governors
Morton, like Clark, has
quite a bit of experience re-
turning. Even better news for
the Governors is that they re-
turn their senior 3B Chris
McCormack, their top returner
hitter, who at .460 last season was also one
of the top hitters in the area.
McCormack, also the starting
QB for the last three years for
the football team will head a
lineup that will be a mix of ex-
perienced players, as well as
some younger athletes who are
looking to crack the starting
lineup. Senior Angel Vanderdyz
was a strikeout machine last
year and is expected to anchor
the rotation.

past couple of years, but the Panthers always
seem to be able to score runs by making
good decisions on the base paths. DeQuais
Goodman, Jonathan Fawries, Jevon Oden,
and Raishawn Vaughn all contributed to the
Panthers success last season.
West Side Cougars
West Side has not had a
problem historically with hitting,
base running, or defense. Pitch-
ing, on the other hand, has often
been inconsistent and this season
should see that area continue to develop. The
good news is that Todd Porter, who pitched
effectively often last season and his battery-
mate Aaron Hall (who also pitches) return,
Hall splits time behind the dish and also at
3B with underclassman Anthony Pierce.
Bowman Eagles
Bowman has no shortage
of athletes walking the halls,
and even the casual observer
would summarize that baseball
should soon follow the basketball, track and
football teams as a premier program in the
area. Krystian Davenport will provide senior
leadership on the mound as well as in the
outfield. Jordan Gray and Maurice Phillips
also return in the outfield for the Eagles.
East Chicago Central Cardinals
The Cardinals return to the
diamond this season with only
three players that were on their
varsity roster last season . Gone
is last season’s RBI leader An-
thony Serna, top hitter and stolen base leader
Erik Romo, and their two best arms Dario
Ruiz and Gilberto Ibarra. Luckily, the players
returning including senior shortstop Adrian
Alvarez (.292 BA/,414 OBP), OF/C Carlos
Perez III (.403 OBP) and OF/P Luis Perez all
return. Jemerny Zakarias is expected to man
1B and Isidro Quiroga will get more playing
time this season in the outfield as well.

Boone Grove Wolves
Boone Grove has been a
juggernaught in the PCC and
throughout the region in Head
Coach Rollie Thill’s tenure at the
helm. Last season was a little more
down to earth as the Wolves finished with a
record just above .500, but it’s one that the
Wolves are sure to improve upon.
Leading the way for the Wolves are
2011 Boone Grove’s All-PCC Selections;
INF Dean Hill who hits above .400 and also
pitches and RF/C Cody Poynter, Boone
Page 28 MAB MONTHLY
Groves leading hitter in 2011, who also
wrestlers and plays football. SS/2B/P Jared
Thill, P/OF AJ Mosier, and P/1B/INF Zach
Wein lead a Senior class rounded out by OF
Stephan Hess.
Hanover Central Wildcats
Hanover Central won 22
games last season and had a
chance to win number 23 when
they played South Spencer in
the 2A State Championship last season. Un-
fortunately, for Hanover and head coach
Doug Nelson, the magic ended at Victory
Porter County Conference
Preview by Rich Sapper, MAB Monthly Staff Writer
Field and they had to settle for runner up
honors.
This year, the Wildcats will have to
make a run with out P Andy Wellwerts who
has taken his golden arm north to Chicago
State, P/2B Nick Sampognaro, DH Mike
Balich, and LF Nick Laing. Luckily for
Hanover, there is some talent left on the
mound with three pitchers left who logged
some innings last year led by Senior Tyler
Trepton who also plays 1B, Sophomore Tyler
Scott who gets playing time at 3B, and Dan
Strum, a Junior who hit .431 last season and
started the state championship games at 3B.
SS Nick Bollenbacher, who is also a
standout basketball player, C Zac Macie-
jewski, Strum, and Trepton all hit .390 or
better last season and look to anchor the
lineup this season.
The Wildcats will play a conference
game against South Central as part of a triple
header on April 14th at the RailCats High
School Baseball Challenge.
Hebron Hawks
Hebron fared well last
season in the first year at the
helm for Skipper John Steinhil-
ber. They played well throughout
the conference season, hit well,
improved their pitching, catcher Brad
Stooksbury earned the Hawks lone all-PCC

selection, and made it all the way to a sec-
tional championship.
Stooksbury will lead the team again be-
hind the plate and protecting Kyle Hernandez
in the lineup. Kyle Joyce also returns for the
Hawks.
Kouts Mustangs
Max Everaert had one of the
best freshman seasons in the area.
The pitcher and cleanup hitter for
Matt Weston’s Mustangs led the
team to a sectional championship
before falling in the Regional to Ft. Wayne
Blackhawk Christian. The freshman leads a
Page 30 MAB MONTHLY
Morgan Township Cherokees
The Cherokees were young
last season. The team ended un-
der .500, but lose only one player
(Kyle Clark) from last year’s
squad. This year, head coach Ja-
son Dorshorst will build his team around
2011 all-PCC selection Matt Polito who hit
above /350, but maybe more importantly,
only stuck out 4 times. Also returning to the
lineup are Adam Rettinger, and Mark Ehr-
stein to put together a group of hitters that
rivals many in the region.
Pitching-wise, expect for Joe Dough-
tery to log a majority of the mound time this
season leading a rotation that also includes
Rettinger.
South Central Satellites
Hanover Central was
not the only PCC team to
make a deep tournament
run last season. South Cen-
tral also was able to make it to the semi-state
before falling in a close contest against La-
fayette Central Catholic. Gone is pitcher Dan
solid two man rotation that includes Junior
Andrew Birky.
That is the good news. The bad news
is that Kouts lost 6 seniors to graduation
which cut into most of the lineup. That
leaves only Birky, Everaert, and last year’s
number nine hitter, senior 2B Dan Cullison
with experienced bats returning. Of course,
the good weather this spring has given Kouts
an opportunity for it’s more inexperienced
players some extra reps and the youth move-
ment hads been good to Kouts in recent
years. This year should be no difference.
LaCrosse Tigers
Brian McMahan’s Tigers
were led by all-PCC selection
P/1B Jimmy Rippe last season.
The Tigers struggled through
the PCC season, winning only one game, but
went 7 games in May, improving as the sea-
son went on before falling to Kouts in the
sectional.
In additional to Rippe, LaCrosse re-
turns Jared Dyjak who went 7-7 on the hill
and drove in 20 runs and Bryce Guse.

Do you need a sports
recruiting video?
Then find Region Sports-
desk on Facebook and ask
Snyder and his battery-mate Cody Young,
but several key players from last year’s team
are back including all-PCC performer Garrett
Walter.
Walter leads a senior class that in-
cludes Tyler Wherrett, Chance Rowe, Ben
Rosenbaum, and Blake Geskey. Austin
Hanna and Adam Clindaniel also are ex-
pected to contribute as the underclassmen get
more at bats this season.
Washington Township Senators
The Senators did just
about everything they could last
year. Good pitching, impressive
defense and solid hitting in the
first part of the order. Unfortunately, they
ran into a very good Kouts team in the sec-
tional that put an end to their season.
This year, Washington Township has
all but one player back, and skipper Randy
Roberts can rely once again on a solid rota-
tion anchored by Justin Landgrebe, Cody
Goodan, and Tyler Frye.
Bobby Ross, Ryan Geberin, and Greg
Fadell also return to the lineup in 2012.
