Team name: Owasso Rams (2rd grade)Head Coach: Coach HelmLast season record: 4-5Post season result: 2nd roundPlayers to watch: #7 Zaferez #6 Caleb helms, #18 Robertson

Checking in is the Owasso Rams. Under the direction of Coach Helms. The team started a little slow but gained momentum toward the end of the season. Lead by #7 Zaferezs and #6 Helms the Rams showed how far they had come. By giving South Tulsa all they could handle in the second round of the Post Season tournament. This is a team to watch out for in 2014 as they will get into passing the ball and key in on defensive speed.

2nd Grade2nd GradeOWASSO

This is a very solid team. Look for them to make some noise all year. These boys have won the hearts of the Owasso community and the respect of opposing coaches and fans.

FDA WARNS AGAINST CONCUSSION CURING CLAIMS FROM SUPPLEMENTS

The U.S. Food and Drug Association recently announced it is monitoring “unproven and possibly dangerous products that claim to prevent, treat or cure concussions and other traumatic brain injuries.”

With all the powders and pills on the marketplace, rest remains the No. 1 thing a concussed individual can do to assist recovery, medical professionals have said.

SPRINGTIME FOOTBALL EQUIPMENT ASSESSMENTS

Youth football leagues across the United States are busy preparing for the upcoming season.Commissioners are double-checking their equipment inventory to make sure they have enough certifi ed helmets and shoulder pads for players this fall.Regular annual inspection of football equipment allows league administrators the opportunity to recondition helmets and replace broken or old gear when necessary. Reconditioning is an important part to prolonging the life of equipment. -READ MORE AT USAFOOTBALL.COM/EQUIPTMENT

HYDRATION STRATEGIES FOR SPRING COMPETITION • How much should you drink before and after activity?Drink 12 fl uid oz 30 minutes before activity begins. After activity, drink every 20 minutes during the fi rst hour to make up for fl uid loss• What color should your urine be?Your urine should look like lemonade and not like apple juice. Urine color can be a non-scientifi c indicator that the body is be-coming or already is, dehydrated. -READ MORE AT USAFOOTBALL.COM/HYDRATION

COACHES, FAMILIES NEED TO WATCH HYDRATION LEVELS AS WELL Players aren’t ones needing hydration during hot months. Coaches experience the same high temperatures as their players during practices. Most of the time, they do similar exercises as their players, such as throwing and running. This means they have to be just as cognizant about hydration as their playersFor parent and family members attending games, it’s important to be aware of places they can replenish fl uids lost while in the heat. watching from a shady spot can help but it isn’t prevention, and young children running around while their older siblings play can lead to dehydration, too -READ MORE AT USAFOOTBALL.COM/HYDRATION

EXPERTS WARN AGAINST CAFFEINATED ENERGY DRINKS FOR YOUNG ATHLETES

Athletes often look for a quick boost to gain a edge. Some including youth players whose bodies can’t handle the elevated levels of caffeine-are turning to caffeinated energy drinks to provide a burst prior to practice and games. This is a short-sighted and sometimes dangerous approach, said St. Vincent Sports Performance dietitian Lindsay Langford. A proper diet and adequate hydration provide young athletes all the energy they need. -READ MORE AT USAFOOTBALL.COM/HYDRATION

The best youth sports o cials are those who have an understanding of the spirit and intent of the rules and how to enforce them; possess outstanding communication skills to interact with players

and coaches in a positive manner; and who display poise, have integrity and use good judgement.

A major policy change taking e ect in the 2013-2014 school year involves the promotion of third-grade students based on reading scores. e Reading Su ciency Act (RSA) states that a third-grade student cannot be promoted to the fourth grade if he or she scores Unsatisfactory on the reading portion of the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test

(OCCT). Any change this signi cant is bound to raise a number of questions — and possible concerns — for parents. Is my child at risk of being retained? Are there exemptions to the law? What can I do to help my child read at grade level? Contact urthemag.com to get more information on helping to identify Literacy de ciency & expand your child’s reading skills for Free!
