It seems to stand in such vivid juxtaposition to some of the events we have shared as a community, a nation and a world these last few months. A few Sundays ago I shared this poem as a preparation for worship during our Sunday service. The poem, written by Methodist pastor and blogger Steve Garnes-Holmes, seems to articulate so well the hope and life of spring.

I have particularly been enjoying the beauty and the promise of spring this year. It seems to stand in such vivid juxtaposition to some of the events we have shared as a community, a nation and a world these last few months. Every spring we have glorious colorful reminders of the promise of new life that is ours. The gray and lifeless winter - and the discord and violence and pain - are not the last word. April Session ReportThe March 16 Session Meeting was held in the Fireside Room. Moderator, Evie Macway, opened the meeting with prayer. Pastor Evie noted that long-time Trinity member Dolly Bass died on April 1, 2013. Darrell Yeaney officiated at her memorial service on April 5. Evie asked the Session to consider renewing relationships for parish associates, Darrell Yeaney and Kathleen Eschen-Pipes, for the coming year. MSP with much appreciation to both Darrell and Kathleen. The Session received various committee reports. Charlie May moved the Session ask for donations from the congregation to support “Living Waters”—a water filtration system that St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Aptos is supporting in El Salvador. MSP. Charlie reported that the mission committee will be using $500 of its undesignated mission budget for this project as well. The mission committee will also contact St. Andrew Church to see if their congregation would be amenable to following up and working with a community in El Salvador, where the well will be dug.In addition, our missionaries to Indonesia—Adeney and Risakotta—will be in the U.S. later this year. Kate Miller has contacted them about visiting Trinity. Evie announced that part of the Cabrillo Chorus conducted by Cheryl Anderson will be singing part of Benjamin Britten’s “War Requiem” at the beginning of the worship service on April 21. Jennie Edwards has agreed to head the Stewardship Committee. Important dates to mark on your calendar include the following:

• Saturday, June 1, the Santa Cruz al Salvador Wine Tasting Fundraiser will be held at Bargettos from 3- 5 p.m. Our missionary to El Salvador, Kristi Van Nostran plans to attend. Contact George Bunch for tickets.

• Sunday, June 2, Kristi Van Nostran will preach at Trinity’s worship service. A luncheon and time for discussion and questions will follow.

• Our Vacation Bible School is scheduled for the week of July 29 – August 2.

• Our 75th Anniversary Celebration is set for September 21 – 22.

Save the Date! Our Indonesian missionaries, Bernie and Farsijana Adeney-Risakotta, will be visiting Trinity on July 14. We will hear about their work in Indonesia and what the situation is like there. Their journey has been an interesting one. They will preach at our morning service with a luncheon or barbecue to follow. Mark your calendars and plan to attend.

Administration CommitteeTrinity is taking steps to become a "green" church, and replacing a portion of our "thirsty" lawn on Poplar Avenue with more drought tolerant landscaping will bring us one step closer to our goal. We have been approved for a rebate through the Santa Cruz Lawn Removal Rebate Program. But before we can begin to plant, we will be removing the portion of the lawn that will be landscaped with a method called "sheet mulching". This involves placing layers of cardboard, compost and wood chips directly over the lawn. This effectively eliminates the lawn and improves the soil at the same time, so we can plant directly into the area once the cardboard has decomposed. We've scheduled two work days in May to do the sheet mulching. If you're able to dig, roll out cardboard, maneuver a wheelbarrow or shovel and spread compost and wood chips, we need your help! Please join us on Wednesday, May 15 and/or Saturday, May 18 at 9:00 a.m. each day to help accomplish this project. Bring spades, garden rakes and wheelbarrows if you have them, and bring a pair of gloves. Contact Beth Hooley with any questions.

restaurant. Local artist Jamie Haentjens was hired to paint a redwood mural on an interior wall. The restaurant is located at 18 Victor Square, Ste. B, Scotts Valley. Congratulations to Chad, Amanda, Justin and Rosie on their new family (ad)venture!

Thank God for Living WaterSt. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Aptos has invited Trinity to join them in support of a water filtration system through Presbyterian Living Waters Project. Our Trinity Mission Committee and Session have agreed to join in this worthy project in a needy site in El Salvador that we might visit during a delegation Mission Trip to El Salvador. We voted to send $500 from our “New Projects” budget and offer opportunity for individual support as desired.Former Trinity Pastor Karla Norton who helped arrange a previous Trinity Living Water project in El Salvador & currently worships at St. Andrew has written this newsletter article in support of the project.“To most of us who live a largely blessed and sheltered life, the idea of the scarcity of clean, accessible water is unimaginable. But for one in six people in the world, accessing clean water is a daily chore that can consume hours each and every day.”“We invite you to ponder this day, as you wash your dishes, wash your car, water your yard, bathe, and drink safe water, the people of the world who struggle for that precious, life-giving commodity. In so many parts of the world, as we have seen in El Salvador, even when water is available, it is often not safe to drink, or even to eat the fish that come from it, because of contamination from parasites or from industrial waste runoff.”“We invite you, too, to join in making a small dent for this critical need in one small corner of the world. We may not be able to solve the water problem for the whole world, but we can solve the water problem for a community in El Salvador----and that’s huge.”You may place a donation in the offering designated for “El Salvador Water Project”, or give a check to any member of Trinity Mission Committee, Charlie, Lee, Kate, Alex, Juanita, or George. Thank You!

Becoming an Earth Care CongregationTrinity has had a long tradition of recognizing our responsibility as careful and humble stewards of God’s creation. Our Session has voted that we would like to publicly acknowledge Trinity’s dedication to that cause by becoming an Earth Care Congregation within the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. To attain this certification we will complete an audit of our practices and sign the Earth Care pledge. If you are interested in more information, a copy of this pledge and the link is included below. We look forward to Trinity being awarded the honor of recognition as an Earth Care Congregation! For more information go to http://presbyearthcare.org.

(PC)U.S.A. Earth Care PledgePeace and justice is God’s plan for all creation. The earth and all creation are God’s. God calls us to be careful, humble stewards of this earth, and to protect and restore it for its own sake, and for the future use and enjoyment of the human family. As God offers all people the special gift of peace through Jesus Christ, and through Christ reconciles all to God, we are called to deal justly with one another and the earth.

1. Our worship and discipleship will celebrate God’s grace and glory in creation and declare that God calls us to cherish, protect and restore this earth.

2. In education, we will seek learning and teaching opportunities to know and understand the threats to God’s creation and the damage already inflicted. We will encourage and support each other in finding ways of keeping and healing the creation in response to God’s call to earth-keeping, justice and community.

3. Our facilities will be managed, maintained and upgraded in a manner that respects and cherishes all creation, human and non-human, while meeting equitably the needs of all people. In our buildings and on our grounds we will use energy efficiently, conserve resources, and share what we have in abundance so that God’s holy creation will be sustainable for all life and future generations.

4. Our outreach will encourage public policy and community involvement that protects and restores the vulnerable and degraded earth as well as oppressed and neglected people. We will be mindful that our personal and collective actions can positively or negatively affect our neighborhood, region, nation and world. We will seek to achieve environmental justice through coalitions and ecumenical partnerships.

The Non-Prophet CornerDarrell  W.  Yeaney,  Parish  Associate

“An  Open  Letter  to  Nephew  Dan”

Dear  Uncle  Darrell,"Why  has  the  Muslim  community  largely  kept  silent  any  time  there  is  an  act  of  violence  by  the  extreme,  radicalized  Muslims?  There  is  no  outcry,  there  is  no  condemnation,  there  is  only  silence.  Why?"      Nephew  Dan.

Dear  Dan,You  raise  a  very  important  question  that  needs  a  response  because  the  silence  often  leads  the  questioner  into  suspicion  and  reinforces  the  very  thing  that  intimidates  most  Muslim  American's  into  silence:  Fear;  fear  of  retaliation,  based  on  the  widespread  identification  of  Islam  and  Muslims  with  "terror"  and  the  objects  of  America's  "war  on  terror."

For  example,  why  is  it  that  almost  none  of  the  mass  killings  in  our  country  in  the  last  decade  or  so  that  have  been  committed  by  deranged  or  right  wing  white  Americans  have  been  called  "acts  of  terror,"  but  the  New  York  and  Boston  attacks,  committed  by  Muslim  extremist,  automatically  carry  this  label  in  the  media  and  by  government  and  law  enforcement?    The  unexamined  assumption  by  most  Americans  that  terrorist  acts  are  identified  with  Muslims  has  driven  the  Muslim  community  into  silence;  into  invisibility,  for  fear  of  retaliation  if  they  speak  out  about  this  public  bias.

For  years  prior  to  the  "Civil  rights  movement"  led  by  folks  like  M.L  King  Jr.    most  black  folks    (at  that  time  called  "negroes"  or  just  "niggers"  )  played  the  role  they  were  asked  to  play  by  the  segregating  and  discriminating  white  majority.    They  did  not  speak  out  when  black  men  were  charged  with  attacks  on  white  women  even  when  they  knew  they  were  innocent,  because  of  the  well  grounded  fear  of  retaliation.  They  certainly  did  not  speak  out  about  social  oppression  and  stereotyping    if  the  violent  act  by  a  black  man  was  true.

In  our  community  today,  many  people  are  publicly  associating  homeless  people  with  criminals  and  violent  acts,  and  the  homeless  are  not  speaking  up.  They  are  afraid.  Afraid  of  losing  what  help  they  might  now  be  getting  to  survive  in  a  society  whose  middle  class  citizens  are  disgruntled  because  they  are  unable  to  live  further  up  on  the  economic  scale  than  they  use  to.

It  is  very  hard  for  the  privileged  class,  whether  defined  by  race  or  economics  or  language  or  religion,  to  see  beyond  their  "tribe"  and  both  understand  and  empathize  with  the  "Other."    Yet,  as  you  are  fully  aware,  that  is  exactly  what  we  Christians  are  called  to  do.

We  Christians  finally  emerged  from  hundreds  of  years  of  discrimination  and  anti-‐Semitic  violence  against  Jews  after  the  Holocaust  by  speaking  up  for  the  Jews  who  previously  had  borne  the  weight  of  prejudice  largely  in  silence.    Perhaps  it  is  now  our  responsibility  to  speak  up  for  our  Muslim  citizens  who  are  bearing  the  weight  of  prejudice  because  of  the  acts  of  an  extremist  fringe.Best  regards,  Uncle  Darrell

Presbyterian Mission worker Kristi Van Nostran visits Santa CruzKristi Van Nostran, Presbyterian Hunger Program Mission worker from El Salvador, will be preaching at Trinity on Sunday, June 2, during a ten day visit to the Presbytery of San Jose. Following the worship service there will be a lunch and discussion time with Kristi. She will also be making brief presentations at San Jose Presbytery meeting at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Aptos, Saturday morning June 1, and at the Santa Cruz al Salvador Wine Tasting Benefit at Bargetto Winery in Soquel on Saturday,3-5 p.m. During her visit she will also be meeting with UCSC Salvadoran students and with many local organic and sustainable farming projects in Santa Cruz and Watsonville as her mission work is as facilitator for the Presbyterian Hunger Program's Joining Hands Ecumenical program to promote sustainable agriculture practices in El Salvador. She is helping to build bridges between U.S. Churches and a network of churches, grassroots groups and Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in El Salvador. Together they work to combat the root causes of poverty and suffering through community education, advocacy, alternative economic activities, lifestyle changes, and spiritual grounding.Kristi is a native of the Pacific Northwest, grew up in First Presbyterian Church in Vancouver, Washington, and is a 2003 graduate of Pacific Lutheran University where she studied Spanish and Religion. She began mission volunteer work in Guatemala with the Presbyterian Reconciliation and Mission program from 2005-2006. Her duties included women's health and domestic violence education, advocacy, and empowerment training. For the past three years she has been Presbyterian Mission worker in El Salvador where our Santa Cruz al Salvador delegation was pleased to be able to meet with Kristi in January. We hope all will be able to visit with Kristi during her visit. She will be staying with Charlie and Gwen May July 30-June 2, and then with Wendy Hess of Santa Cruz al Salvador in Watsonville, June 2-4,

before going to San Jose area for the last part of her visit. If you have any questions about her visit please call George Bunch or Charlie May.

Coffee Hour Goes Green You will notice something new at coffee hours. You will enjoy your coffee while drinking it out of real cups. No more paper!! If you are among the saints who "do" coffee hours, your added chore will be to load the dishwasher with the cups and turn it on. You will find the cups

in the kitchen in a crate for easy carrying out to the coffee hour. Coffee drinkers will be asked to bring their empty cups into the beautiful new kitchen and put them on the counter by the dishwasher. Speaking of saints who do the coffee hours . . . coffee hours have gotten pretty elaborate, and there are just a few of the same people who take on the responsibility of providing the goodies time after time and they are burning out. The idea has been tossed around of having just coffee after church. Maybe we could do that for the summer to give the regulars a break.

Trinity 2013 One Great Hour of Sharing DonationsThis year the Trinity community donated $2088.10 to the PC(USA) One Great Hour of Sharing offering. This offering, established in 1949, is used by the denomination for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program and Self-Development of People. Thank you for your generosity.
