“Paava Mannippu” (1961) was produced and directed by A.Bhim Singh under his banner Buddha Pictures in associationwith Meiyappan. This film too had an excellent star cast withSivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesh, K. Savithri, Devika, S.V.Subbaiah, T. S. Balaiah, V. Nagaiah , M. R, Radha and M. V.Rajamma.

The film had top-class music and many songs became hitswhich are still remembered and heard to this day. The compos-ers were Viswanathan - Ramamurthy, one of the most suc-cessful film music composers of Indian Cinema. Later, on hisown, M. S. Viswanathan went on to create film music historywith his immortal melodies. His contribution to Tamil filmmusic is immense and awaits a full study.

¡°Paava Mannippu” was a resounding box-office hit andenjoyed silver jubilee - 25 weeks - run at many places in TamilNadu. It also won a Certificate of Merit from the IndianGovernment. Its melodious music contributed in good measureto the success, and many songs in it became hits.

The lyrics which became popular were written byKannadasan. A poet of amazing talent, he is considered to beone of the outstanding poets of Modern Tamil Literature.Single-handedly he elevated the film lyric to be part ofliterature. In his simple but lyrical style he made the film songan art form. A prolific writer, he was also producer and politi-cally active. A cult figure and a legend in his lifetime and a legendthat still lives even after his demise. During his day he wrotesongs for almost every Tamil film.

“Paava Mannippu” was dubbed into Telugu as ¡°PaapaPariharam ¡°(1961).

Another successful joint venture by Meiyappan was¡°Pacchai Vilakku” (1964). Produced by Vel Pictures withsupport from Meiyappan and directed by Bhim Singh, this hitfilm too had a star-studded cast. Led by Sivaji Ganesan, theothers in the cast were ‘Sowcar’ Janaki, S. S. Rajendran, C. R.Vijayakumari, C. K. Nagesh and others. The tale of a duty-conscious railway engine diver who sacrificed his life to save histrain passengers’ lives, it was inspired by a famed Russiannovel.

Meiyappan¡’s son, M. Saravanan, was initiated by his fatherto learn the lessons of picture production and he worked in thejoint ventures as chief production executive or executive pro-ducer. In later years he would emerge as leading and highlysuccessful multi-lingual producer with enviable track record ofbox-office hits. He became a noted personality in the Indiancinema world and a popular citizen - a veritable chip of the oldblock!

Meiyappan’s other two sons, Murugan and Kumaran, re-vealed a flair for film direction and, jointly as ¡°Murugan-Kumaran¡±, they made films in more than one language. Theywere “Jaise KO Taisa” (1973, Hindi), ¡°Pooja” (1974, Telugu)and ¡°Jeevan Jyothi” (1976, Hindi).

Meiyappan’s youngest son M. Balasubramaniam was thenpursuing his studies and, after college, he entered the familybusiness as producer. In later years he would join his brotheras partner in the firm.

Even though Meiyappan had not involved himself rigorouslyas before in the day-to-day affairs of his studio and productioncompany, he was still at the helm of the AVM ship and thebeacon light of the monolith enterprise. He laid down thepolicies and took all the decisions. In view of his advancing agehe did not direct or work on sets. However, as before, hecontinued to scan the horizon for fresh talent. He held the firmconviction that cinema was born out of theater and the growthof the stage was essential for the well-being of movies. He wasnot the only person in the Indian Cinema world to have suchopinion. It was out of such conviction that he looked to thetheater not only for story material and also performers andothers for his productions ever since he had taken his humblebow in movies way back in mid-1930s.

NO HOLDS BARRED

On a rural holiday, after a rocking bus-tripover roads laid by Tippu Sultan (who loved hishorses and soldiers not only to trample theenemy to dust but as an adjunct to civilisedliving), we survived the trip to Kannur, myhome town, and Pallikunnu my good old greenvillage, after a flight from Chennai toKozhikode.

The non-stop rain added romance to therodeo-ride when the conductor-commanderordered the video-crumb of “Shakunthala”which took us back to at least half a centuryand the undying voice of M.S.Subbulakshmi.

The opiate saw us through a part of thejourney that, on civilised roads, normally takesan hour but, in democratic Indian roads thatturn into lakes during rains, three hours and, sometimes, another bonus one hour.

A 10-rupee tip to the music conductorbrought beautiful Subbulakshmi back on thescreen, this time as Meera. Lakshmi and Ithanked the highways for preserving God’strail of a million years so that, on an inclementday, we could feel God’s presence through theheavenly voice of Meera a.k.a. Subbulakshmi.

We went shopping to the music parloursto acquire as many cassettes of Subbulakshmias the blokes had, but drew blank. “Wholistens to soulful music these days, sir? Peoplewant ‘Mukkabala’ type. Yesudas, the voice ofthe world, will also be shunned by the soullesssoon. So we don’t stock them. How about acouple of cassettes of Michael Jackson?”

“No, thank you. That is not music. It is noisewhich was why his doctor allegedly silencedhim with a barbiturate potion”.

We bought a few Yesudas, Chitra, Susheelaand Janaki cassettes for our stay at nieceAnjana’s newly built palace for a week’s holi-day.
