The celebrations in the cityincluding the neighbourhood tousher in the New Year wererelatively peaceful barring afew incidents. At least 300people were reported injured inminor accidents, mostly oninterior roads, in Chennai andits suburbs, while threepersons were killed.

There were huge crowds inthe popular neighbourhoodtemples which remained openfor New Year.

More than 18,000 policepersonnel, including seniorofficers, were deployed in thecity to ensure there were nountoward incidents.

Itwas estimated that more than7 lakh partied into the weehours at the city beaches. 4.5tonnes of garbage wasgenerated and Marina Beachand 2.5 tonnes at Elliot’s Beachin a single night.

A constable stationed atPothy’s junction said that whilefamilies were enjoying NewYear together, he and manyothers like him in the force wereensuring their safety. “Weexchanged New Year wisheswith one another and with ourfamilies over cell phones,” headded.

Further to the announce-mentby Chennai Corporation that itwill give priority to widen roadsinstead of constructing flyovers,T. Nagar Residents’ WelfareAssociation has appealed to startthe exercise from T. Nagar as itis the most congested andencroached upon commercial/residential hub in Chennai.

In a letter addressed to theMayor, V.S. Jayaraman (Secre-tary) has written that eventhough the service lanes ofUsman Road are open tovehicular traffic, due toencroachment, even walking hasbecome tedious. The service laneon the western side of UsmanRoad is heavily congested forcingresidents on the side streets likeRamana-than Street, RanganLane, Rangan Street and Rames-waram Road to take circuitousroutes. He has further written thatthe margins of RanganathanStreet, Railway Border Road andstreets abutting Usman Roadhave also been encroa-chedupon. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, Thick bolts are protruding dangerously from the surfaceof the road close to the existing median at the entrance ofAranganathan Subway (Govindan Road) on Saidapet side. The bolts which are invisible, especially during dark hours posea danger to motorists. The bolts have been installed to extendthe median. The entrance to the subway is already narrow andis used by both 2-wheelers and 4-wheelers. Extending themedian would further narrow the width causing trafficcongestion. Additionally, the nearby shopkeepers park theirvehicles near the entrance further narrowing the alreadycongested road or blocking it. I appeal to the authorities toremove the bolts immediately and give up the idea of widening/lengthening the median any further. – Krishvanth, T. Nagar.

Protruding iron bolts pose danger to motorists

Enforce stricter measures to preventre-encroachment

Sir, This refers to the eviction drive by Chennai Corporationon Dec. 26 to remove about 120 roadside encroachments fromUsman Road. While this action needs to be lauded, theirresponsibility does not cease here. It has often happened in thepast that within a few weeks of such an action, theencroachments often resurface. It should be ensured that itdoes not happen again by enforcing stricter measures. TheCorporation should continue such operations on a war footingand rid all the roads and the pavements in the city ofencroachments. The judiciary too should not blindly give stayorders based on petitions filed by the encroachers. Such is thecase with 131 shops on Usman Road which continue to be aheadache for the Corporation. I hope the Corporation officialsare taking up the matter actively to vacate the stay. Some ofthe streets where encroachments continue are Usman Road,Ranganathan Street, Railway Border Road and Arya GowdaRoad, to name a few. – T. Nagar Residents’ WelfareAssociation, 30, Rangan Street

Widening roads is a better solution thanconstructing narrow flyovers

Sir, During the Chennai Corporation Council meet heldrecently, Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy had announced thathenceforth, the civic body will give priority to widening roadsrather than building flyovers to decongest the roads. It isindeed an epoch-making resolution! Most of the major roads inChennai are too narrow and the existing flyovers have noteased traffic congestion in anyway. The classic example isUsman Road flyover. One hopes that the Corporation does notsway from the decision and takes the logical step to first ridpavements and road margins of encroachments. The‘Encroachment Nagar’, as T. Nagar is popularly referred to byits residents, will benefit immensely from this decision. –V.S.Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Appeal to relocate Lake View Road ration shopSir, The Ration shop HC009 which is in a dilapidated condition

was to be shifted to a new location on Lake View Road. However, the decision was rescinded at the last minute andcards were allotted to a nearby ration shop. This has burdenedthe consumers as the shop is not able to handle the additionalquota and they are forced to stand in long queues. I appeal tothe authorities to find a new location for the shop HC009instead of merging it with an existing shop. – T. G.Badrinarayanan, 4, Duraisamy Road, T. Nagar

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 21‘Rojulu Marayee’ was a major hit in Telugu,released in 1955.

It was directed by Thapi Chanakya, a noted Telugu filmmakerand was produced by C.V.R. Prasad, a contemporary of theIndian movie icon, L.V.Prasad.

A newcomer to movies named Waheeda Rehman virtuallystole the film doing a dance number about farmers risingagainst vested interests and fighting for rural prosperity. Thissong, ‘Eruvaaka Saagaloy’ was adapted from a familiar folksong composed by Valluri Jagannatham who was popular asa gramophone disc musician in Telugu and his discs were bestsellers. The film was shot by the camera maestro KamalGhoshwhose work added lustre to her dance sequence.

(Waheeda Rehman, who had faced a movie camera for thefirst time, hit the headlines. However, more interesting headlinesappeared in Madras and Tamil-speaking areas of the oldMadras Presidency when the producers of the Telugu film senta legal notice to the noted Tamil film producers KrishnaPictures (Lena Chettiar was the moving force behind thecompany) and the music composer G. Ramanathan, who hadcomposed a similar song in ‘Madurai Veeran’ starting with’Summa iruntha soathukku nashtam’. The tuneand theorchestration were all the same, and even some of the shotswere similar. Shocked by the legal notice, Lena Chettiar andG. Ramanathan rushed to meet their advocate at his home-office in Lady Desikachari Road in Mylapore. He was the notedMadras High Court Original Side lawyerwith many interestsin arts, music, filmand more by nam V. C. Gopalratnam (thiswriter’s guru-in-law, as he was then an apprentice-at-law inVCG’s chambers).

This was VCG’s first meeting with G. Ramanathan and theymet quite often later, mostly at the Rajakumari cinema inT.Nagar (sadly no longer in existence) which Ramanathanvisited frequently to watch English movies mainly for themusic. Very often, he and this writer sat in adjoining seats andtalked about film music, Western film tunesand such mattersof common interest to both.)

Gopalratnam sent a reply in his usualhigh-flownEnglish tothe Telugu film producers asserting that there was no copyrightfor that tune which was based on old rural Telugu folk music, and nobody could claim any rights exclusively. The matterended there but the producers ran an advertisement in Tamilnewspapers with the headline ‘ ‘Poligalai kanduemaaratheergal!” (Do not be carried away by fakes!).

The same Telugu tune found its way to Hindi Cinema during1960s with two iconic Hindi film music composing legends, S.D. Burman who took the tune for the lyric ‘Dekhne me bholahai mera salona’ rendered by Lata Mangeshkar in ‘Bombai KaBabu,’ and Chitragupta for ‘Pathang’ (a remake of VauhiniPictures’ ‘Peddamanushulu’) for the song ‘RangrekhaDhadkhandi lathi tho hogi’ (Lata Mangeshkar).

The song list in ‘Madurai Veeran’ continues: 5. ‘Avarukkum enakkum’: A sentimental song sung by the

heroine P.Bhanumathi in the Raga ‘Desh’. This is from ClassicalHindustani music and was used in the National song ‘VandeMatharam’ and also used in many movies in Tamil, Kannada,Telugu, Hindi and other languages.

6. ‘Senthamizhkku’ is in Raga Kambodhi, a traditional ragaof Classical Carnatic Music and was sung by the inimitable M.L. Vasanthakumari

7. ‘Vaanga a machhan vanga’, a hit tune in Raga Senjurittisung by Jikki and P. Leelain a dance sequence with E.V. Sarojaand G. Sakunthala and also M.G. Ramachandran. He dancedexcellently with agile movements.

8. ‘Mutthupol pallazhagi’ in Raga Jonpuri, filmed on MGRwith T.M. Soundararajan singing for him was a hit song.

With his hit music in ‘Madurai Veeran’, the reputation of G.Ramanathan, the Tamil Movie Music Charmer, soared stillhigher. Of course, his best was yet to come!
