Northwest of England• The third largest UK region - 6.9 million people in 2010 - the eighth in area

(14,100 sq km, 6 % of the total area of the UK.)

• Over 87 % of the Northwest population live in urban areas - the second highest UK regional population density, 490 people per sq km, London has 4,980 people per sq km.

• But population density varies. The region has the second largest area of National Parks in England, the highest mountain (Scafell Pike) and the largest lake (Windermere). It also has two large conurbations, Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

• Merseyside has 1.4 million residents (2,100 people per sq km). Cumbria is largely rural with 0.5 million residents living in 6,800 sq km, (70 people per sq km).

• The North West region contributed nearly 10 per cent of the UK’s GVA.

• 11 of the UK’s 113 universities are in the Northwest

• 65 of the FTSE 100 companies

• Manchester was the world's first industrialised city, now the second destination for visitors after London and the third in the UK

• Political and trading freedom
