Our Values: Respect, Responsibility, Equity and Achievement. Transition of students from the Supported learning Centre to life beyond school is one of our key curriculum priorities within the SLC. Our curriculum supports work experience, community access and independent living skills in the aim of students following their lifelong pathways beyond school. We have ten students from Year 12 graduating in 2010 and 12 Year 7 students transitioning into the Supported Learning Centre. While expressing farewells, I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of one of our key teachers of the SLC-Ms. Barbara Kwiatek. Barbara is leaving us after 7 years for a sea change on the Yorke Peninsula. Barbara has worked tirelessly with all of our students focussing on Numeracy Skills, Work Education and the development of independent living skills within her learning programs. Barbara has been a Care Group teacher to the senior students playing a key role in supporting the transition of her students including developing partnerships with Phoenix Society and Minda Incorporated where many of our students take up employment opportunities upon leaving school. I would also like to acknowledge Ms. Rose Trelibs. Rose is a well respected senior school science teacher who is retiring from Henley High School. In addition to her mainstream teaching commitments Rose has played a key role in the Gardening program within the SLC working in partnership with Henley / Grange Community maintaining and developing a Community Garden. Under the guidance of Ms. Trelibs, SLC gardening students have been given the opportunity to be involved with the community and learn many useful independent living skills, which is a priority in the SLC curriculum. Many cross –curriculum links have been established as a result of this gardening as students have used their grown produce for cooking healthy and balanced meals. Kerrie Dianos is looking forward to continuing the gardening program in 2010.

As 2010 draws to an end, we celebrate the enormous contributions of the staff and Year 12 students who are leaving the Henley High School Supported Learning Centre. I hope you enjoy our final Newsletter for 2010 reminiscing with our staff and students around our fulfilling supportive school community.

I also welcome Mr. Martin Artsen who has been appointed to the SLC for 10 years as a teacher replacing Barbara Kwiatek. He will be visiting us from Port Augusta on Monday of Week 9 while the teaching staff work collaboratively planning our teaching and learning programs for 2011.

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday and Christmas. I look forward to working with all of the staff, students and their families again in 2011.

This is my last term at Henley High School and I would like to take the opportunity to farewell all students and parents with whom I have worked with over the past 7 years. I have been teaching for over 20 years both in Australia and overseas. I studied for five years to become a Mathematics teacher at the internationally famous Jagiellonian University. After I graduated I secured a Mathematics teaching position at the Centre for Hearing Impaired Students in Cracow-Poland. I taught mathematics from year 8 to 12 through my seven years at this High School. To improve my skills in working with Hearing –Impaired Students I completed some professional courses and upon my arrival in Australia I upgraded my qualifications (Postgraduate Course for Bachelor of Special Education-Hearing Impairment) at Flinders University in Adelaide. I then worked as a temporary relief teacher in various schools in Adelaide where I taught in a variety of settings in mainstream as well as special education. In 1996 I started my employment at Kilparrin Teaching and Assessment Unit. I have since then been involved in The Active Learning Approach which enables students with sensory impairment and other disabilities to learn and experience success. I worked in that field for 8 years as a classroom teacher and as a visiting teacher (I was required to teach and model to fellow teachers state wide how to teach students with sensory impairments and with other disabilities). I have completed the Auslan-Certificate 1 at Adelaide TAFE and I have since started to develop some new resources to implement Auslan language in the education of students with sensory impairments for the purpose of developing a better understanding of these students’ needs and developing communication modes with students.

In 2003 I started teaching at Henley High School in the special class as well as in the mainstream. In 2005 our new SLC unit was built and I started to teach full time in the unit. In the past seven years I have been teaching various subjects in the unit but my biggest focus has been an emphasis on mathematics and life skills for students with disabilities. Having extensive experience I confidently program for the diverse needs of students with extensive modifications and accommodations. I modify the learning programs in order for the students to access the curriculum and be successful.

My enthusiasm for Mathematics engages and encourages all students to have a go. I provide a diverse program that caters for a variety of interests and abilities. In my work at Henley HS I have attended conferences, seminars and workshops to increase my knowledge, skills and understanding in the education of students with whom I have been working with. I have become a strong believer in the transition of students with disabilities. Moving into the unknown world of life after school is a challenge for our students. The transition of students with disabilities from the known, comfortable, safe and supportive environment of school life is even more challenging and can often be approached with difficulty and confusion. I have been involved with Western Futures in the transition of our students by running sessions on how to apply for a job and writing resumes. I have provided a valuable resource package for the students and parents about what support is out in the community after finishing school. I have established and maintained a successful work experience relationship with Phoenix for the last four years. The aim of this work experience is to give the students the possibility to learn what is expected in a working environment. It gives students a wide variety of activities that are designed to develop the students’ attributes and skills to participate in both paid and unpaid work. It increases students' understanding of the current and future labour market and increases students' understanding of the dynamic nature of work. It helps students to be more work-ready. This year I have also organised a new work experience at Minda that is going to start next year. With Western Futures’ help I continue to annually organise the SLC -Senior Dinners at the Lakes Resort where all our SLC Senior students are able to celebrate their achievement. It has been nice to see every year that most of our Year 12 students are employed at least part time and have secured a future after leaving school.

I have enjoyed taking the students on a variety of excursions that focus on developing and improving their everyday life skills. The SLC students have enjoyed having their recesses/lunches at various shopping centres where they have developed their independent living skills when buying their own food and drinks. Having access to a community bus allowed me to organise longer excursions to Hahndorf, Victor Harbor, Noarlunga, Hallett Cove, Melba Chocolate Factory, Birdwood and Gumeracha. All excursions were very interesting and a worthwhile experience for all students. It has been good to see improvement in students’ behaviour in the wider community and see them getting on well with each other and members of the community. I have enjoyed working with the students and staff at Henley HS. Now I am going to live in Yorke Peninsula where I am going to continue my teaching in a country school. I wish all the SLC students and staff in the Unit all the best in the future. Barbara Kwiatek

Farewell Rose Trelibs

As part of the SLC Health and Wellbeing Program it has been my pleasure to be involved with the gardening class for the last two years; particularly as it has allowed for direct contact between the school and members of the local community garden. The Henley Community Garden has provided a place where the SLC gardening students can become involved with the community and learn many useful independent living skills, as well as show them how to live sustainably. Since the organic garden began over three years ago, there have been many plans and trial plantings until it has evolved into what it is today with many vegetable plots, herb gardens and fruit and nut trees. The students have enjoyed their involvement in this process. This has included mending and changing wheelbarrow tyres, path making, planting and maintaining seedlings and later harvesting, cooking and eating the produce. The garden is also a place to relax and appreciate nature. Recently the students were delighted at the discovery of a blue tongue lizard, living under a log at the base of the compost heap as well as being surprised by a pair of colourful eastern rosellas which have frequented the garden area. On behalf of the students and myself I would like to thank Helen the community gardener, who has joined the gardening class almost every week for the past two years. Her tireless efforts, providing seedlings, nurturing them through the summer break and generally sharing her wealth of knowledge and expertise with us have been greatly appreciated. Her passion for gardening was exemplified by the bunches of sweetpeas and vegetables she brought in for the students to take home to their families in these last few weeks. Well my fellow gardeners, students and staff of the SLC, the time has come for me to say thankyou and farewell. I would like to wish Ms Dianos all the best as she continues with the gardening focus. It has been a most interesting, informative and enjoyable journey. Rose Treilibs

Farewell Year 12’s

Jonathon Boffa Jonathon’s favourite subjects at Henley have been Art and dance. He is going to miss the teachers and SSOs when he leaves because “they are funny, friendly and nice”. Jonathon will be remembered as The Quiz master of the SLC , every term he held a Quiz among the teachers, with the students as the studio audience.

Dylan Grant Dylan’s favourite lesson while attending Henley high has been Art with Mr Rusanoff.

Dylan says “ The teachers and SSOs in the unit have made a big impact on me”. Dylan will be remembered for helping everyone in the Supported Learning Centre with I.T. Dylan has also been a good role model for other students.

Sarah’s transition from school included working part-time in the family business. Sarah’s favourite lessons included dancing and Art. Sarah will be remembered for her singing.

Matthew Johnson-McEvoy Matthew has liked having access to computers at school. He liked horticulture lessons the most as he had “lots of fun and learnt many things”. Matthew hopes to keep in touch with the friends he has made at school in the future. Matthew will be remembered for spending all his excursion money buying presents for his mum in Year 10.

Ben will miss the friends he has made at Henley. He has really enjoyed work experience at Minda and is going to continue working there next year. Ben will also miss the Teachers and SSOs because they are funny. Ben will be remembered for always being polite and well mannered. .

Farewell Year 12’s

Tim Naylor-Vane Tim has found the Teachers and SSOs at Henley very influential and thinks they have done a great job with the students. He has made many mainstream friends since year 8 who have always included him, “ they have made me feel important, they understand me and don’t judge me”. Tim will be remembered for explaining to everyone in the unit their rights.

Stevan Savic Stevan likes to explore Adelaide and the Adelaide Hills so the Hyde Street Program and school excursions have been important to him at school. Stevan will miss meeting new students and all the jokes he has with everyone in the Supported Learning Centre. Stevan will be remembered for knowing all the SLC staff birthdays, remembering their dates and reminding them how old they are.

Shaun Sellers Shaun is grateful for all the new friendships he has made at school. He has had loads of fun, enjoyed excursions and being around teachers and his friends. Shaun feels he has learnt something new everyday. Shaun will be remembered for his good sense of humour and his generosity, helping others with bus tickets.

Franz Theodore Franz enjoyed P.E. at Henley, and likes to play football and basketball with his friends at lunchtime. He has made some good friends at school and Phoenix where he did work experience. Franz will be remembered for always being well dressed and smartly presented at the senior dinners.

Welcome Back Ms Nash!

It was with much pleasure and excitement that I returned to the Supported Learning Centre to fill in for Ms Parsons this term. I have worked at Henley High School in many capacities since my days here as a student teacher in 2005. I have enjoyed small contracts in both mainstream and the SLC over the years, and have also had many days as a relief teacher at HHS. In 2008, I farewelled HHS and travelled to England with my partner. We stayed overseas for 23 months as ‘working holiday makers’, spending some time living in Edinburgh, Scotland and in Bristol, UK. In addition to travelling through England, Europe and the Middle East, I worked as a teacher in both London and Bristol. I had some very challenging and interesting experiences in the UK schools, which are very different to HHS, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed teaching abroad. I was lucky to spend time in both primary and high schools and also had the opportunity to teach in some special schools. I feel that my time overseas really en-hanced my growth as a teacher and I feel proud of what I accomplished. It was fantastic to return to Australia this year and to have the staff and students at Henley High School wel-come me back so enthusiastically. I am amazed and proud to see the students I knew as Year 10s now on the brink of leaving school, engaging me in all sorts of mature conversations about my travels and their lives over the last 2 years! Meeting the new students in the SLC has been lovely and I have been enjoying getting to know them better over this last term. I have been fortunate to teach all three SLC classes over this term, having PLP with SLC 3, Work and Transition with SLC 2 and English, Work and Transition and Community Access with SLC 1. I have had lots of fun taking the SLC 1 class on their Community Access excursions, and we have visited West Lakes, Rundle Mall and the Museum, Woodville Bowls and travelled on the O-Bahn to Tea Tree Plaza. We have also had some cooking adventures, making cupcakes and tacos after going to West Lakes Shopping Centre with a shopping list to purchase the ingredients. I have seen some positive changes in the SLC since I have been gone and I have really enjoyed the opportu-nity to teach here again. I have found all the staff to be helpful and encouraging and I have felt much supported in my journey this term. It is really such a pleasure coming to work and engaging such fascinating, lively and happy students. I hope that I will one day get the opportunity to return in the future.

Welcome new students for 2011

As the SLC line manager for term 4, I have the privilege to welcome and introduce all new students for 2011. We are fortunate to have 12 new students entering the Lyn Wright, Supported Learning Centre at Henley High School from various primary schools in the western district. The new students are: Alyssa Puopolo, Sarah Rogers and Nicholas Schultz - Flinders Park Primary School.

Alyssa enjoys school and being with her friends. She has particular interests in dance, music, art and computers.

Sarah Rogers Sarah enjoys school and likes to spend time with her friends. She also enjoys art, dancing, singing and drama. Sarah participated in the school choir.

Nicholas Schultz Nicholas loves to chat, enjoys computers and technology. He is very competitive at sport and participated in the school choir.

Ben Fuss Ben enjoys writing and drawing and likes cooking and computing. He loves music and drama and has good ball skills in basketball, cricket and handball.

Isabella enjoys school and makes friends easily. She enjoys shopping and going swimming.

Matthew enjoys school and being with his friends. He also enjoys computers and lego.

Nathan White Nathan enjoys construction and technology kits especially, magnets and electronics. He also enjoys gardening, designing/ making/creating art work such as plaster cast models and computer graphics.

Timothy Norton Timothy enjoys listening to music, dancing and singing. He also enjoys bike riding on weekends and attends dancing lessons at the Dance Gallery.

Alicia Martino Alicia has a good sense of humour and enjoys cooking and computing. She is happy being at school and loves books.

                       This semester traditionally we had our Year 12                        “Graduation Dinner” at The Lakes Resort Hotel on                        Thursday  18th  of  November.  Again  this  Venue                         proved  to  be  a  wonderful  change  from  school with a great atmosphere, fine food and entertainment from some of the   students. One again SLC staff and  students would like to say a big thank you to Helen and Andrew from Western Futures for helping to organise the Annual Senior Dinner where SLC students are able to celebrate their achievements. This year all of the students from Year 12 and Year 11 made the effort to participate and commit to this event. From the photos you can certainly see that the students and staff had a wonderful time.   It was nice to see most of our Year 12 students being employed and having secured a  future after  leaving school.
