The thoughtful and careful choosing of hymns for the Divine Service by those planning worship is anhonored tradition in the Lutheran Church. From the earliest decades of the Reformation era, specifical-ly chosen hymns sung by the congregation were incorporated into the standard order of worship usedin Germany and later throughout Northern Europe in Lutheran congregations. In the Deutsche Messe(German Mass) of 1526, Martin Luther provided for the singing of a hymn by the congregation inplace of the Gradual, which had customarily been sung by the choir between the reading of the Epistleand the Holy Gospel. Over time, this Gradual Hymn became known by a variety of titles, such as thede tempore hymn (hymn of the day) or the Hauptlied (principal hymn) for the service. A specific list ofhymns appropriate to a given sequence of appointed readings, usually chosen to complement the themeof the Gospel for the day, was chosen and ultimately standardized to a great extent for use among thefirst Lutherans.

Although the custom of a specific Hymn of the Day fell into disuse in Lutheran churches for an extendedperiod of time, the tradition was revived in the middle of the twentieth century, first in Germany and thena few years later in the United States as new worship books were adopted by Lutheran church bodies. With the release of this Hymn Selection Guide in conjunction with the publication of Lutheran ServiceBook, the tradition of specific lectionary-related hymn selections has been preserved and enhanced.

The selection of hymns for any given service relates closely to the Holy Scriptures, the psalms, andprayers appointed for the day. In all of this, Lutherans give careful attention to the Sundays and sea-sons of the Church Year, not only because of long-standing tradition, but because these patterns andpractices are Christ-centered. The Church Year, especially from Advent through Eastertide andPentecost, leads the faithful into and through the life of Christ. The Sundays after Pentecost arefocused on the ongoing ministry of Christ within his church on earth, with eyes of faith fixed upon hiscoming in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection. These Sundays and seasons are truly one of themost precious treasures of our rich heritage as Christians.

The high points of the Church Year are Holy Week and Easter, the Ascension of Our Lord andPentecost, Christmas and Epiphany. The rest of the year ebbs and flows upon these high points, approaching and returning from them. The church thus has her changing seasons, an annual cycle oftimes and tides, wherein she lives by grace through faith in Christ her Savior. Every Sunday is a cele-bration of his resurrection from the dead, along with a proclamation of his saving cross. The benefitsof his death and resurrection are given to us in the Sacrament of the Altar, and the Holy Spirit ispoured out upon his church in Holy Baptism, in the preaching of the Gospel, and in the spoken word ofHoly Absolution.

In support of the Church Year, this Hymn Selection Guide provides three categories of hymn choices. The first category is the Hymn of the Day, which most closely parallels the Hauptlied from the earlyLutheran tradition. Chosen primarily to reflect the Holy Gospel for the day or occasion, the hymn ofthe day finds its best usage when sung either immediately before or following the sermon.Occasionally, an alternate hymn of the day is offered for the sake of congregational familiarity or easeof singing. The yearly repetition of the hymn of the day provides an ongoing opportunity to build thehymn repertoire of the congregation.

The second category, Hymns for the Readings, provides hymn choices that are related to one or moreof the three appointed readings for the day. Many possibilities are listed, reflecting the full treasury ofhymns from across the Christian centuries. Worship planners will want to review these suggestionscarefully so that the most appropriate choices are made to support the proclamation of the Word attheir given time and place.

The third category is titled Other Hymns. This section contains suggestions for wider use during theservice on a given day. It often includes possibilities for the beginning and close of the service, as wellas hymns that might be sung during the distribution of Holy Communion. The full range of hymnodyincorporated in Lutheran Service Book and Lutheran Service Builder has been taken into considerationin the preparation of this guide.

Hymns 967–986 appear only in Lutheran Service Builder and in Lutheran Service Book: Accompanimentfor the Hymns, but not in the Pew Edition. Wherever these hymns are recommended in this volume, they appear with an asterisk (*).

Selecting hymns for a specific congregation entails more than simply scanning the lists provided hereand choosing three or four hymns for a particular day. This task requires having a sense of what hymnsthe congregation already knows, while also seeking to facilitate a plan for how to expand that hymnrepertoire over time. Furthermore, the process of selecting hymns requires careful consideration regard-ing a well-balanced hymn repertoire. For example, the use of only one facet of the church’s song, suchas only Lutheran chorales or only nineteenth-century English hymnody, deprives the congregation ofthe wealth of hymnody that gives voice to sacrifices of thanksgiving and praise from other times andplaces. Worship planners will wisely make hymn selections with a variety of considerations in mind, including the immediate context of a single Sunday, the broader context of a particular season, and thelong-range context of the congregation’s overall hymn repertoire.

The process of choosing the hymn suggestions presented in this guide was completed by members oftwo Lutheran Service Book committees: Henry Gerike and Stephen Starke from the HymnodyCommittee; Richard Stuckwisch and Gregory Wismar from the Lectionary Committee. Coordinator forthe project was Paul Grime, executive director for the LCMS Commission on Worship and LSB projectdirector. The work of several others enabled the project to move forward in a timely manner, includingthe contributions of Rachel Asburry, administrative assistant for the commission, who provided muchneeded clerical assistance; Peter Reske, music editor at Concordia Publishing House, whose editor’seyes assisted in the never-ending hunt for typographical errors; Karen Eggemeyer, who designed thefront and back covers; and Jon Vieker, assistant director for the Commission on Worship, whose keensense of design has made these pages so readable.

It is our prayer that this guide will be a blessing not only to those who plan worship but also to thepeople of God who are gathered to hear God’s Word and sing his praises.

About the Resources and Indexes

More than a third of this Hymn Selection Guide consists of a number of helpful resources and indexes. The first resource provides a comparison of Lutheran Service Book with its predecessor hymnals. Thecomprehensive comparison is followed by individual comparisons between LSB and each hymnal.

Two resources are provided to assist worship planners in organizing their task. The first is an exampleof how one might keep a record of hymn usage. By recording the month and day of usage in the appro-priate column, worship planners can quickly ascertain when and how often a particular hymn has beenused. An annual review of a congregation’s hymn usage can assist worship planners in identifyinghymns with which to expand the congregation’s repertoire. The second resource consists of two sampleplanning worksheets. Both worksheets can be used as is or modified to suit local needs. In addition toidentifying liturgical choices and listing hymns, choral and instrumental participation can also benoted. The Divine Service worksheet can be used for any of the settings in Lutheran Service Book.Because of the differences between services of the Daily Office—for example, between Matins andEvening Prayer—only one example has been provided here. Worship planners can easily modify theMatins worksheet for use with other services.

In addition to the Hymn of the Day suggestions provided in the first portion of this book, two addition-al lists are provided. The first provides a summary reference to all the Hymn of the Day suggestionspreviously included. The second list is arranged by hymn number, thus enabling the worship planner todetermine if and when a particular hymn is assigned as a Hymn of the Day.

All doxological stanzas in Lutheran Service Book are identified by a triangle ( ) that represents theHoly Trinity. Two indexes here identify all of these occurrences. The first lists the occurrences of doxo-logical stanzas by hymn number. The second indexes the doxological stanzas by meter. This secondindex enables worship planners to identify a doxological stanza that might occasionally be added to ahymn with the same meter where there is no doxological stanza. In order to preserve the integrity ofeach hymn text, this practice should be used sparingly and with great care.

Three Scripture indexes are provided here. The first gathers together all of the references—over2,100—that appear at the bottom of the hymn pages in LSB. An even more extensive index of over10,000 references can be searched in Lutheran Service Builder. The second and third indexes are takenfrom the LSB lectionary volumes and identify all of the appointed readings for both the three-year andone-year lectionaries. Using either index, musicians can determine when a choral piece based on a par-ticular passage from Holy Scripture might most appropriately be used during the year.

The topical index provided here is an expanded version of the one included in the LSB Pew Edition.

The first line index of hymns and canticles has been expanded from the one that appears in the PewEdition. First, the 20 hymns that appear in Lutheran Service Builder (967–986) have been integratedinto this index. Second, several dozen hymn references have been added where the first line of text wassignificantly different in TLH, LW, or LBW from that in Lutheran Service Book. Each of these firstlines is indented. As in the LSB Pew Edition, an index of foreign language hymns is included.

The final index provides a quick reference to the hymn suggestions for the feasts, festivals, and occasions.

One-Year Lectionary

Along with the great feasts and Sundays and seasons, the Church Year also includes a constellation ofother feasts and festivals, which further reflect the grace and glory of God in Christ. Occurring at vari-ous points throughout the year, these sacred occasions commemorate with thanksgiving importantjunctures in the life of the Lord, as well as individuals whose lives and service were so formed by thelife of Christ as to be a part of the Gospel.

Appropriately, the Church remembers and gives thanks to God for St. John the Baptist, the forerunnerof Christ, and the blessed virgin Mary, who by the gracious and merciful choosing of God became themother of His only-begotten Son. Likewise do we honor and glorify Christ in the festive commemora-tion of his holy apostles and evangelists, whom he called to proclaim his Word to the nations. Thesefestivals are not about worshiping the saints; rather, they are a way and means of worshiping Christ ourLord, his Father and the Holy Spirit, the one true God, who deals with us and bestows his gifts upon usthrough mortal men and women who are very human. In much the same way that children rightlyhonor their parents, so fathers and mothers in Christ continue to be honored by the faithful. Thanks aregiven to God for his gift of these faithful servants, and Christian faith and life are strengthened bythese examples of his grace and mercy toward them and by the example of their faith and faithful serv-ice within their respective vocations.

Recognizing the benefits of observing the feasts and festivals, congregations may wish to provide aproper setting for such observances. Though it is not commonly practiced, one option is for the congre-gation to gather for worship on a feast day, no matter which day of the week it may occur. Even if a for-mal service is not offered, the feast or festival can be observed with those who have gathered for otherpurposes. For example, if the church council meets on the day when St. Luke is commemorated(October 18), the devotion at the beginning of the meeting could highlight that sanctoral cycle occasion. One or more of the appointed readings, the collect, and an appropriate hymn might be used. The samecould be done at a choir rehearsal or at Bible classes that gather during the week. Local circumstanceswill determine what is most edifying to the life of a congregation.

When a feast or festival falls on a Sunday, the opportunity exists for a wider celebration within thecongregation. Such observances are never intended, however, to displace or compete with the celebra-tion of the high feasts of Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, and Pentecost. Nor are they meant to disrupt thesolid seasonal patterns of Advent through Eastertide. Nevertheless, there are times and opportunitiesfor the observance of these feasts and festivals when they occur on a Sunday.

There are certain feasts of Christ that will normally take precedence over the ordinary Sunday propers(i.e., the appointed readings, Psalms, prayers, and hymns) when one of these feasts occurs on a Sunday. As indicated by the boldface type on p. xi in Lutheran Service Book, these “principal feasts” include:

• the Circumcision and Name of Jesus (on New Year’s Eve or Day)• the Purification of Mary and Presentation of Our Lord (February 2)• the Annunciation of Our Lord (March 25)• the Visitation (May 31 or July 2)• the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (June 24)• the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels (September 29)• All Saints’ Day (November 1).

Introduction to Feasts and Festivals

Page 12: LUTHERAN SERVICE BOOK - Concordia Publishing House

122

When one of the other festivals falls on a Sunday, it may or may not take precedence over the ordinarySunday propers. For example, if the festival of St. Barnabas (June 11) falls on either the Day ofPentecost or the Sunday of The Holy Trinity, it would certainly not displace either one of those high andholy days. But if it falls on one of the Sundays after Pentecost, a congregation may decide to observe it.As a general rule, if a festival falls on a “green Sunday,” that is, one of the Sundays after the Epiphanyor after Pentecost, it may be observed in place of the regular Sunday propers. If, however, it falls duringone of the other seasons of the year, it would be less likely to displace the appointed propers.

In cases where it may not be desirable to replace the usual Sunday propers, a feast or festival can stillbe acknowledged in other ways within the context of the regular Sunday morning Divine Service. Forexample, the collect appointed for the feast or festival might be used in addition to the collect for thatSunday. Or the feast might be referenced in the Prayer of the Church. Another possibility would be toconsider the hymns suggested for the feast, one or more of which might find a place within the orbit ofthe Sunday service (perhaps during the distribution of the Holy Communion or as an offertory hymn).Certainly, information on the feast could be included in the bulletin announcements and maybe evenmentioned in the course of the sermon. Typically, the people of God will appreciate and benefit fromsuch information, which surely helps to give them a better sense of the church’s history as one livingbody of Christ in heaven and on earth!

Finally, when a feast or festival occurs on a weekday, there is the custom of transferring its observanceto the nearest Sunday. This is often done, for example, for Reformation and All Saints’ Day. Again, theguidance noted above should be considered. Through the thoughtful observance of feasts and festivalsthe Church is able to give thanks to God for his saints, all to the praise and glory of our Lord JesusChrist!
