LUMINARY
February 2018 The Rev. Canon Timothy M. Dombek
The Nearness of God
Ironic isn’t it that Ash Wednesday—one of two days set aside during the year for fasting—lands on Valentine’s Day in 2018? Wednesday, February 14. Typically on Valentine’s Day, one focuses on our “beloved,” the loved one in our life—our spouse or significant other. Sometimes that is expanded to include beloved friends or our children, and rightly so.
By contrast Ash Wednesday—signifying the beginning of the Season of Lent—is a day of fasting, a day of penitence and repentance, a turning around from going in one direction, and pursuing the opposite direction. Or theologically speaking, turning from sin toward righteousness. Nothing like throwing cold water on Valentine’s Day joy!
What if, however, this year we use Ash Wednesday’s appearance on Valentine’s Day as a launching point this Lent for pursing a closer relationship with God? What if we make God, our beloved for the next six weeks, and make our goal drawing nearer to God in that time before Holy Week and Easter?
Drawing closer to God, deepening one’s relationship with God, is a good idea anytime of the year. Yet often, people don’t know how to go about doing that, or what to use to help them pursue God. Well, believe it or not, most of us already possess one of the easiest tools to aid us in growing closer to God.
On Wednesday evenings in Lent, you are invited to learn how to use the Book of Common Prayer on an individual, day to day basis to enable you to grow closer to God. The Nearness of God: Exploring Spiritual Growth Using the Book of Common Prayer will introduce you to the Book of Common Prayer, and how to use it not only on Sundays, but on a day to day basis for personal spiritual growth—to draw closer to God, the goal and purpose of all our lives. Together we will explore the history of the prayer book, the richness of its sources and various services, and help you discover one of many different options in using the prayer book daily to help you grow spiritually. You will find a way to begin, and grow, and add more, to further your spiritual growth over time.
Wednesdays at Advent in Lent this year will look like this: Holy Eucharist (with anointing for healing for those who desire it) starts at 5:00 PM, followed by Soup supper at 5:45 PM; the Lenten program on the BCP will commence at approximately 6:15 and conclude by 7:15 PM. Please sign-up in the church office, or by calling (623) 584-0350. There is no cost for the program, and the soup supper will be provided by a free-will offering each night (please be generous!).
Take advantage of this opportunity to learn about the prayer book, have your questions answered, and learn practical ways to use it as an integral part of your own daily practice of scripture reading and prayer, to enable you to grow closer to God—in whose eyes all of us are God’s “Valentine”: a beloved son or daughter.

First Concert in 2018: “Sing, Sing, Sing!” on February 4
The Advent Episcopal Church concert series resumes for its first concert in 2018, on February 4, beginning at 2:00PM, with the outstanding musical group: “Sing, Sing, Sing!”
Come and enjoy a “rollicking musical tribute that will take you from the 30’s, and 40’s, to the 50’s, 60’s, and beyond! Sing, Sing, Sing! is an extraordinary evening featuring four women singers
performing music from popular female harmony groups like the Andrews Sisters, the McGuire
Sisters, the Boswell Sisters, and the Chordettes, among others—singing songs you won’t want to miss.
Tickets are only $5, and will be available for sale after worship services, in the church office, and at the door on the day of the concert. This is a great opportunity to bring a friend who has never been to Advent! Get your tickets this week for Sing, Sing, Sing! (Note: The concert will end well before kickoff time for the Super Bowl game.)
Thank you for Your Generosity at “Food and Fellowship”! In the last six months or so we have seen our refreshments at coffee hour after the 10:00 am
service go from coffee and cookies to more hearty and healthful food and deserts that many of us now treat as a lunch. We even changed the name from Coffee Hour, to “Food and Fellowship,” to reflect this change toward more substantial and healthful choices.
Many thanks to Alice Goss, Sharon Navratil and many, many others who oversee this food preparation—and a special Thanks to You, our regular donors who through your kind and generous giving cover the costs of this meal. Your gifts of $1, $3, and $5 (or more!) each week truly provides that food.
Also, a special “Thank you!” to all of you who signed up to serve food and coffee during “Food and Fellowship” time during upcoming Sundays in February, March and April. We have volunteer servers now through April. If you didn’t happen to write down the day that you signed up for—no worries! The schedule is posted in kitchen.
Wednesdays after Church, Soup Supper, and Lenten Program Returns
Lastly, our next opportunity to serve will be for the upcoming Lenten Soup Supper and program, following the regular Wednesday worship service, beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 14. An annual event at Advent, the Wednesdays in Lent Soup Supper and program is seeking people who would like to make soup to serve about 35 people for six Wednesdays in February and March.
Following the 5:00 pm Holy Eucharist in the church, the soup supper beings at approximately 5:45 pm, followed by the Lenten program that gets underway around 6:15 pm and ends by 7:15 pm. For more information, contact Sharon Paine, whose number is in the parish directory that was emailed to you—you can also stop by and pick up one in the church office.
By the way, the Lenten program is entitled: The Nearness of God: Exploring Spiritual Growth
Using the Book of Common Prayer; sounds fascinating and practical. You can also sign-up for it in the church office.
Thank you to everyone for all of your help in making hospitality a top priority and value here at Advent Episcopal Church. You are greatly appreciated!
Thank you, from your Hospitality, Events, and Publicity Ministry.

2018: Your Year of Gratitude
Think of the three happiest people you know – people whose lives effervesce with joy and peace.
Chances are they also have a profound thankfulness for all that God has blessed them with. They
also seem to live with a sense of contentment. Reflect for a minute. Isn’t that the case?
By contrast, you may also know folks who are considered wealthy but are profoundly UNhappy.
Likely they not only fail to exude thankfulness for their wealth, but they also mistakenly believe they
need even MORE possessions to be happy. Isn’t that right?
Now, which kind of person do you tend to be?
Thankfulness. Happiness. Contentment. These joyful characteristics work together, reinforcing one
another. Human experience proves this simple fact to be true: People who are grateful for all they
have and all they are tend to be happy and content. Moreover, don’t they also tend to possess
spiritual depth and emotional maturity? A coincidence? Hardly.
Thankfulness, happiness and contentment interact, but gratitude holds the key. Develop gratitude,
then happiness and contentment follow. It doesn’t work the other way around. With prayer, devotion
and simple exercises, the Holy Spirit will lead you to deeper spiritual maturity and more happiness.
Here are some ideas for you and your family.
Pray daily. Ask God to give you a greater sense of thankfulness. And then thank God for all the
day’s blessings.
Chart thankfulness. On a big wall calendar mark one thing for which you’re thankful to God. Invite
other family members to do the same. When you get in the habit of looking for them, you will find
blessings everywhere.
Keep a “blessing list.” Write down the things you are grateful for. Then as you say your nighttime
and morning devotions, pray over the list: “God, I’m thankful for this, and I’m thankful for that.”
Revise the list as needed.
Start a refrigerator “gratitude board.” Using sticky notes, post on your refrigerator the things for
which you are most grateful. Use a different color sticky note for each family member. Keep the
board updated.
Send out thank-you notes. Buy a box of inexpensive thank you notes and send one every week.
Go deep, thanking not only the folks who have given you a present or done a favor for you, but
also those whose love, support, friendship, laughter, energy or presence are important to you.
Make a “thank offering.” Express gratitude in a tangible way by making a contribution to your
congregation or favorite church cause. Make the donation “just because,” or in honor or memory of a
loved one, or on the occasion of a special event or blessing in your life.
Adopt one or more of these exercises as a spiritual discipline and, with God’s help, you will develop
the attitude of gratitude that will bring more satisfaction, greater happiness, spiritual depth and
emotional maturity to your life. Blessings for 2018.

DONATIONS AND PANCAKES
Thanks to all of you who donated food and/or money to our “Hunger Tree” this
Christmas Season. The results were amazing—261 pounds of food and $168
collected for the hungry. This means that 1,176 meals will be provided to hungry
families.
The main fund raiser for the ECW and the Men’s Club is the Rummage Sale, which
will take place on February 9 and 10. This is a wonderful opportunity to donate your slightly
used treasures to the Parish. We will be collecting items from February 5th to 8th. This year we
can only accept flat screen TVs and computer screens. All other items are welcome.
The Shrove Tuesday Pancake dinner will be on Tuesday, February 13th at 5:30 p.m. This
dinner features the “Best in the West” pancakes and fixin’s. Come joins us for food and
fellowship just before Ash Wednesday in Paine Hall.
Blessings, John Long, Men’s Club President

Advent Episcopal Church: Making a Difference!
The Angel Tree at Advent this past Christmas 2017 took a new path by collecting items for the aged of an historic Native American tribe. Nine members of our church traveled to southern Arizona, on December 19, to deliver Christmas gifts to the elders of the Pasqua Yaqui tribe near Tucson.
Working with the Rev. Canon Debbie Royals, Canon for Native American Ministries in the Diocese of Arizona, we received a list of 85 names, and you, the generous parishioners of Advent responded—individual gifts were collected and tagged with those names; and Advent even went a step further by delivering 125 adult winter coats.
After the gift and coat distribution, elders were able to select a pair of pajamas for their grandchildren. Ad-vent also provided a traditional catered meal for the 90 attendees at the Pasqua Resource Center. Then we were treated to a fascinating tour of the Pasqua Yaqui Museum.
Many thanks to Judy Laffin, who was responsible for collecting the coats and pajamas, and a BIG thank you to all of you who participated in our Angel Tree this year—we truly made a difference in many people’s lives!
Blessings to all of the helpful Advent Christmas elves: John Long, Russ Brumagin, Sharon Paine, Deacon Debbie Greenleaf, Maureen Haskell, Pat Stewart, and Bonnie and Bill Nordstrom, who helped pack the U-HAUL and made this a wonderful trip a huge success.
Just A Reminder: our outreach ministry has many exciting activities happening each month and all parishioners are welcome to attend:
On the first Thursday each month at 11:30, join us for “Lunch & Laughs,” a delicious lunch, and lots of fun, open to anyone at Advent.
On the fourth Tuesday of each month we open our doors for lunch through the “Be Our Guest” soup kitchen, which is free and available to anyone who walks through our doors.
And starting on January 23, and running simultaneously with the soup kitchen, we begin a new partner-ship with The Valley View Food Bank to distribute food out of North Paine Hall to anyone in need of food.
We are always looking for “angels” to assist in our outreach ministries, and as always, we covet your prayers for our ministry, and for the people whom we are honored to serve.
Faithfully yours,
Sharon Navratil

Did you know that you can make a gift to Advent Episcopal Church and receive an income that you (or you and your spouse) cannot outlive?
Contact Herb Norton, Nan Wheeler, Pat Lewis Finnell or Canon Timothy Dombek and ask about a Charitable Gift Annuity through The Episcopal Church Foundation (or your local community foundation).
January Donations: Food (first Sunday) = 65 lbs. Hunger Tree (ending January 6th ) = 261lbs. YTD = 326 lbs. Dollars (first Sunday) = $115 Hunger Tree ( ending January 6th ) = $168 YTD = $283
The Telecare Ministry of Advent Episcopal Church
Telecare Ministry: What is it you may ask? It’s a layperson phone ministry that provides support to members of our church family. It’s telling somebody we care; we are here for you. Calls are made on behalf of the pastoral staff, which enables the rector to become aware of any changes or illness. We at Advent Episcopal Church love you. Did I get your attention!! I need a team!! Can you spare a couple hours a month? Would you like to get involved! Please contact chairperson of the telecare ministry Jan Ravine-Mann 765-437-5352 or [email protected]
Thank You! Blessings, Jan Ravine-Mann

Episcopal Church Women
Women’s Ministry
I was trying to think of the four stages of sleep early this morning. The last one starts with “R” and it
is not” ram” (male sheep). I counted plenty of those along with the “ewes”. It was a period when I
was not fully awake but was unable to get back into a deep sleep. Anyway, I decided the word that
fit is,” reflect” or to ponder.
Why does it seem like Christmas was just last week and Ash Wednesday is just a couple weeks
away? I was looking for a vacant slot in the calendar to hold our March ECW General Meeting as
the day that it was scheduled is too close to the Men’s Club St. Patrick Day Supper.
What did I discover? We are a busy Parish! It is wonderful to see our facility being used by so
many groups and Outreach programs and it is a certain sign of growth.
By the time this Luminary hits the press, the Advent Attic Fashion Show will be one more fantastic
memory and we will be knee deep in rummage sale items. Thank you for all who work so hard to
make our fund raisers a success and those who come to enjoy our endeavors. Could not do it
without you!
The Rummage Sale takes place on February 9th and 10th, from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 on Friday and 8:00
A.M. until noon on Saturday. It is not too late to gather together your good, clean usable articles.
Call John Long or Chuck Smith if you have large articles such as furniture. Their phone numbers
are in the directory or call Ann Fletcher, ECW Rummage Sale Chairman.
Drop off time is Monday thru Thursday from 9:00 until 1:00 P.M. in Paine North Hall.
We also need your help on Sale Days. Sign up in Paine Hall or just stop in and lend a hand. I
promise you that you will find a “bargain” that you just can’t resist!
Stay tuned. We will be announcing details for the Spring ECW General Meeting in the March
Luminary and Bulletins.
Bless all our ECW members who faithfully serve Advent Parish. I am thinking of Altar Guild,
Bereavement committee, Cards from Advent Visitors, DOK, Eucharistic Visitors, Food &
Fellowship Crew. (I was doing the alphabet when I finally fell asleep!)
Blessings,
Joyce Rozon, ECW President
“Let’s Go To The Hop”—at Advent Episcopal Church!
On Saturday, February 17, join us at 3:00 PM for a good old fashioned Sock Hop in Paine Hall, featuring our own in-house disc jockey—Canon Timothy! Bring a friend and your best dancing shoes, as we hit the floor to the best music from the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, and some tunes even beyond! Invite a friend, and plan to attend—the music starts at 3:00 and ends by 6:00 PM. Open to everyone! Bring a snack to share. Soft drinks provided.
