Ask for What You Need… Prayer➷ Jesus’ disciples asks him to teach them how to pray like John taught his

people to pray. Jesus does teach them how to pray.

➷ The author is teaching us to ask God for what you really need, so he can send the Holy Spirit to guide you. Don’t ask for what you want . You are not suppose to ask for what you want, but for what you need.

The Good Friend… ➷ Jesus tells one of his disciples: Suppose your friend, who was traveling, bangs on a your door for food, and you say no because everyone is sleeping. The man keeps asking and making noise disturbing the people, so finally you get up and give him what he wants.

➷ Jesus is teaching them: if you ask more than once, you will receive.

➷ The author is saying Keep on asking, and you will receive. Keep on looking, and you will find what you are looking for,. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened for you. Whoever keeps asking will receive, whoever keeps looking will find, and doors will open to those who keep knocking.

Jesus and Beelzebul➷ Jesus casts out a demon, leading the people to accuse him of deriving his

power from Beelzebul (the prince of demons). He tells the people a story

of a man who despite being fully armored to protect his palace, is

overthrown by another man..

➷ “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.”

➷ “Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out?”

➷ “If I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”

➷ In Matthew’s version, Jesus is called the Son of David and Satan is called Beelzebub. There is also mention of Judgment Day.

The Sign of Jonah➷ Jesus is preaching to the people. He tells them to stop searching for

signs after all the ones God have already given them and to make a choice.

➷ Jesus asks them to turn away from sin and repent, like the Ninevites in the story of Jonah and like the Queen of the South..

➷ In Matthew’s gospel it refers back to judgment day. The Ninevites and the Queen of the South will rise to judge the guilty.

Lamp of the Body…➷ Starts off as, "No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be

hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light."

➷ Refers to God giving us a "religious light" (Chance, a way, privilege) and how we should not keep it hidden, but use that light properly so that we may go forth and build a greater relationship with GOD.

➷ Healthy eyes vs. Unhealthy eyes. (Religiously right vs Sinfulness)

➷ Jesus wishes for us to choose a path that can bring us away from sin and temptation and closer to GOD. The Path of Light…

Woes to Pharisees and Lawyers

➴ Jesus had been invited to eat with a Pharisee and accepts the invitation. When Jesus sits with the Pharisee, he was surprised at how Christ had not washed his hands before the meal.

➴ He lists three woes to the Pharisee: ➢ “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a

tenth of your mint”

➢ “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.”

➢ “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves.”

Woes to Pharisees and Lawyers ➷ The experts of the law( aka Lawyers) state how

they feel insulted because they felt it applied to them..

➷ Jesus then states three woes to the experts of the law:➢ “ … woe to you, because you load people

with burdens they can hardly carry… “

➢ “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them.”

➢ “Woe to you experts of the law, because you have taken away the key of knowledge...”
