ATTO PRIMO
Scena I
Ameno villaggio.
1:1 Overture
LAURA, CONTADINI:
1:2 Ti desta, Luisa, regina de' cori;
i monti gi lambe un riso di luce:
d'un giorno s lieto insiem
con gli albori
qui dolce amistade a te ne conduce:
leggiadra quest'alba sorgente in aprile,
ma come il tuo viso, leggiadra no, non :
pura, soave quest'aura gentile,
pur meno soave, men pura di te.ACT One
Scene I
A pleasant village. On one side, the humble house of Miller, on the other a rustic church: in the distance above the treetops, the top of Walter's castle. A clear spring dawn is on the horizon: the villagers prepare to celebrate Luisa's birthday. Laura is among them.
LAURA, PEASANTS:
Wake up, Luisa, the queen of hearts
The mountains are already touched by a merry light: Along with the first light of such a happy day
Sweet friendship has brought us to you: Lovely is this rising April dawn,
But not as lovely as your face:
It is pure and gentle, this kindly breeze, But it is less gentle, less pure than you
Scena II
Luisa, Miller e Detti
MILLER:
1:3 Ecco mia figlia.
LUISA:
O care amiche!
CONTADINI:
Il cielo a te sia fausto.
LAURA:
In breve ad invocarlo
andrem uniti al tempio.
MILLER:
Il vostro affetto dal mio ciglio esprime
pianto di tenerezza...
Al cor paterno sacro
il d che spunta....esso mi die' Luisa!
LUISA:
(N giunge ancor!
Da lui divisa non v'ha gioia per me!)
MILLER:
Figlia, ed amore, appena desto in te,
s vive fiamme gi spande!
Oh! mal non sia cotanto amor locato!
Del novello signor qui giunto nella Corte
ignoto a tutti questo Carlo.
Io temo!Scene II
Luisa, Miller and above
MILLER:
Here is my daughter
LUISA:
O dear friends!
PEASANTS:
May Heaven be propitious towards you
LAURA:
Soon, to invoke it,
Let's go together to the church.
MILLER:
Your love brings a tear of tenderness
To my eyes...
To a father's heart the rising day
Is sacred...It gave me Luisa!
LUISA:
(He hasn't got here yet!
There is no joy for me apart from him!)
MILLER:
Daughter, love, only just awakened in you already spreads such strong flames
Oh! May such love not be misplaced
This Carlo, who came to join
the court of the new lord, is unknown to everyone
I'm afraid!
LUISA:
Non temer:
pi nobil spirto,
alma pi calda
di virt non mai vest spoglia mortal.
M'am, l'amai.
1:4 Lo vidi, e 'l primo palpito
il cor sent d'amore;
mi vide appena, e il core
balz del mio fedel.
Quaggi si riconobbero
nostr'alme in rincontrarsi
formate per amarsi
Iddio le avea in ciel!LUISA:
Don't be afraid:
A more noble spirit,
A warmer heart of virtue has never assumed mortal form
He loved me, I loved him
I saw him and my heart felt
The first beat of love;
He had only just seen me, and the heart
of my faithful one beat for me.
Down here our souls
Recognised each other when they met
God had made them in Heaven
To love each other!
LAURA, CONTADINI:
Ah!LAURA, PEASANTS:
(first the ladies and then the men all giving her a nosegay of flowers)
Luisa, accept a simple pledge
Of friendship.
LUISA:
This heart is thankful
O tender companions
(noticing a young hunter, who also, amongst the others, gives her his flowers)
Ah!
Scena III
Rodolfo e Detti
RODOLFO:
Mia diletta!
MILLER: (turbato, tra s)
Desso!
RODOLFO:
Buon padre!
LUISA:
Abbraccialo,
t'ama qual figlio.
RODOLFO: (salutando i contadini)
Amici . . .
(a Luisa)
Sei paga?
LUISA:
Di letizia colma son io!
LAURA, CONTADINI:
Felici appieno vi rende amore.
LUISA, RODOLFO:
Appien felici? vero!
A te dappresso il cuore
non vive che al piacer.
T'amo d'amor ch'esprimere
mal tenterebbe il detto!
Il gel di morte spegnere
non pu s ardente affetto;
ha i nostri cori un Dio
di nodo eterno avvinti,
e sulla terra estinti
noi ci ameremo in ciel!
MILLER:
(Non so qual voce infausta
entro il mio cor favella . . .
Misero me, se vittima
d'un seduttor foss'ella!
Ah! non voler, buon Dio,
che a tal destin soccomba . . .
mi schiuderia la tomba
affanno s crudel!)
LAURA, CONTADINI
Un'alma, un sol desio
ad ambo avvia il petto!
Mai non si vide affetto
pi ardente, pi fedel!
(Odesi la sacra squilla)
TUTTI:
Udiste? I bronzi squillano;
andiam, ne invita il ciel.
(Da questo momento tutti abbandonano la scena cantando, ed entrano a poco a poco nella chiesa, ad eccezione di Miller)Scene III
Rodolfo and above
RODOLFO:
My delight!
MILLER: (troubled, to himself)
The very person!
RODOLFO:
Good father!
LUISA:
Embrace him,
He loves you like a son.
RODOLFO: (greeting the Peasants)
Friends . .
(to Luisa)
Are you content?
LUISA:
I am full of happiness
LAURA, PEASANTS:
Love makes you fully happy.
LUISA, RODOLFO:
Fully happy? It is true!
Near you, my heart
Is alive only to pleasure
I love you with a love which words
Would be hard pushed to express!
The cold of death
Could not extinguish such fervent love
God has tied our hearts together
With an eternal knot,
And when we are dead on earth
We will love each other in Heaven!
MILLER:
(I don't know what ominous voice
Speaks within my heart . . .
Woe is me, if she were to be
The victim of a seducer!
Ah! good Lord, don't allow her
To succumb to such a fate
Such cruel distress
would lead me to my grave!)
LAURA, PEASANTS
One soul, one single desire
Enlivens both their hearts.
Never has such a warm, faithful love
Been seen!
(The peal of church bells is heard)
ALL:
Do you hear? The church bells peal;
Let us go, Heaven invites us.
(At that moment all leave the stage singing and gradually go into the church apart from Miller)
Scena IV
Wurm e Detti (Entra Wurm)
WURM:
1:5 Ferma ed ascolta.
MILLER:
Wurm!
WURM:
Io tutto uda!
Furor di gelosia m'arde nel petto!
Amo tua figlia,
eppure, un anno volge,
io la sua man ti chiesi;
non dissentisti,
ed or che pi fortuna
a me spira seconda,
or che il novello signor
pi che l'estinto
m' largo di favor,
tu la promessa
calpesti, ed osi!
MILLER:
Ah! cessa!
Il mio paterno assenso promisi,
ove la figlia t'avesse amato.
WURM:
E non potevi forse
alle richieste nozze
astringerla?
Non hai dritto sovr'essa tu?Scene IV
Wurm and above (Enter Wurm)
WURM:
Stop and listen.
MILLER:
Wurm!
WURM:
I heard everything!
A furious jealousy burns in my breast!
I love your daughter,
Yet, a year ago
I asked you for her hand;
You didn't disagree,
And now that better fortune
Breathes on me in favour
Now that the new lord
Offers greater favour to me
Than the dead lord,
You dare to override
The promise!
MILLER:
Ah! Cease!
I promised my paternal assent,
If my daughter were to love you.WURM:
And could you not perhaps
Have compelled her
to the requested marriage?
Do you not have that right over her?
MILLER:
Che dici mai?
1:6 Sacra la scelta d'un consorte,
esser appieno libera deve;
nodo che sciorre sol pu la morte
mal dalla forza legge riceve.
Non son tiranno, padre son io,
non si comanda de' figli al cor.
In terra un padre somiglia Iddio
per la bontade, non pel rigor.
WURM:
Costarti, o vecchio debole,
caro il tuo cieco affetto dovr,
ben caro!
MILLER:
Spiegati.
WURM:
Sotto mendace aspetto
il preferito giovine
si mostra a voi.
MILLER:
Fia vero! E tu conosci?
WURM:
Apprendilo: ei figlio
dell'altero Walter!
MILLER:
O ciel! Dicesti figlio?
WURM:
Del tuo signor. Addio.
MILLER:
Pur . . .
WURM:
M'intendesti.
(parte)MILLER:
Whatever are you saying?
The choice of a husband is sacred,
It must be completely free:
A knot which only death can untie
Receives dictates badly from force
I am not a tyrant, I am a father,
One doesn't command a daughter's heart.
On earth a father is like God
In goodness, not in strictness
WURM:
Your blind affection must cost you dear
O weak old man
Very dear!
MILLER:
Explain yourself.
WURM:
The favoured young man
Shows himself to you
In a false guise.
MILLER:
Could it be true! And do you know it?
WURM:
Know this: he is the son
Of the lofty Walter!
MILLER:
O Heavens! You say the son?
WURM:
Of your lord. Farewell.
MILLER:
Just. . .
WURM:
You heard me.
(leaves)
MILLER:
Ei m'ha spezzato il cor!
(rimane silenzioso qualche momento, come oppresso dal dolore)
1:7 Ah! fu giusto il mio sospetto!
Ira e duol m'invade il petto!
D'ogni bene il ben pi santo,
senza macchia io vo' l'onor.
D'una figlia il don solanto,
ciel mi festi, e pago io son,
ma la figlia, ma il tuo dono
serba intatto al genitor.
(Parte)MILLER:
He has broken my heart!
(remains silent for a while, as if oppressed with pain)
Ah! My suspicion was correct!
Anger and sorrow fill my heart!
Of all good, the most sacred good
Honour, I wish to have unstained.
Heaven's gift to me was just one daughter, And I am satisfied,
But keep my daughter, your gift
Whole for her father.
(Leaves)
Scena V
Sala nel castello di Walter, con porta in fondo. Walter e Wurm. Alcuni familiari, che rimangono al di l della soglia.
WALTER:
(inoltrandosi seguito da Wurm).
1:8 Che mai narrasti!
Ei la ragione a dunque smarr!
WURM:
Signor, quell'esaltato capo
voi conoscete.
WALTER:
La Duchess intanto mi segue!
Digli ch'io lo bramo.
(Wurm si ritira co' servi)
Ah! tutto m'arride,
tu, mio figlio, tu soltanto osi!
La tua felicit
non sai quanto mi costi!
Oh! mai nol sappia, mai.
1:9 Il mio sangue, la vita darei
per vederlo felice, possente!
E a' miei voti, agli ordini miei
si opporrebbe quel cor sconoscente?
Di dolcezze l'affetto paterno
a quest'alma sorgente non
Pena atroce, supplizio d'inferno
Dio sdegnato l'ha reso per me.
(Entra Rodolfo)Scene V
A room in Walter's castle, with a door at the back. Walter and Wurm, Several servants, who remain beyond the threshold.
WALTER:
(coming forward, followed by Wurm)
Whatever are you telling me!
He has lost his mind then!
WURM:
My lord, You know
that young hothead.
WALTER:
Meanwhile, the Duchess follows me!
Tell him that I want him.
(Wurm retires with the servants)
Ah! Everything smiles on me,
You, my son, you alone dare!
You don't know how much
your happiness costs me!
Oh! May you never know it, never.
I would give my blood, my life
To see him happy, powerful!
And could that ungrateful heart
oppose my wishes, My orders?
Paternal affection is not
a source of sweetness to this heart
An indignant God has rendered him
Deep anguish, the torture of hell to me.
(Enter Rodolfo)
Scena VI
Rodolfo, e Detto
RODOLFO:
1:10 Padre . . .
WALTER:
M'abbraccia. Portator son io
di lieto annunzio.
Federica in breve sar tua sposa.
RODOLFO:
(O cielo!)
WALTER:
Insiem cresciuti nel tetto istesso,
pi di te quel core apprezzar chi potria?
Come l'offerta della tua man le feci,
ebbra di gioia mi rivel
ch'ella per te nudria
segreta fiamma,
pria che il paterno comando
al Duca la stringesse.
RODOLFO:
(O me perduto!)
WALTER:
Fra l'armi estinto quel guerrier canuto,
il nome ed il retaggio
a lei ne resta,
a lei cui man d'amica
porge l'augusta donna
che preme il trono di Lamagna.
Il varco s'apre a te della corte!
RODOLFO:
Ambiziose voglie non alimento
in cor, t' noto!
WALTER:
In questo debil core
trema che il guardo mio non scenda.
RODOLFO:
Io voglio a te scoprirlo . . .
WALTER:
Taci . . . la Duchessa!
RODOLFO:
O padre!
WALTER:
Incontro ad essa moviam,
quindi le nozze chiederne
a te spetta.
RODOLFO:
E credi? e speri?
WALTER:
Obbedisci . . . Son leggi i miei voleri.
(Traendolo per mano all'incontro della Duchessa)Scene VI
Rodolfo, and Above
RODOLFO:
Father. . .
WALTER:
Embrace me. I am the bearer
of a happy announcement.
Federica will shortly be your bride.
RODOLFO:
(O Heavens!)
WALTER:
Grown up together under the same roof
Who could appreciate that heart more than you? When the offer of your hand to her made her drunk with joy,
she revealed to me that she nurtured
a secret passion for you,
Even before her father's command bound her to the Duke.
RODOLFO:
(O I am lost!)
WALTER:
The name and the heritage
of that white-haired warrior
Who died in battle remains hers
to whom the noble lady
Who sits on the throne of Germany.
reaches out the hand of friendship.
The path to Court opens to you!
RODOLFO:
That I don't nourish ambitious desires
In my heart, is known to you
WALTER:
Tremble, lest my gaze should
descend into that weak heart.
RODOLFO:
I want to reveal it to you . . .
WALTER:
Silence . . . It is the Duchess
RODOLFO:
O Father!
WALTER:
Let us go to meet her,
henceforth it is your concern
to request the nuptials.
RODOLFO:
And you believe this? And you hope?
WALTER:
Obey . . . My will is law.
(Pulling him by the hand towards the Duchess)
Scene VII
La Duchessa con seguito di Damigelle: Paggi, Famigliari, Arcieri
I COMPAGNI DELLA DUCHESSA:
Quale un sorriso d'amica sorte,
gentil, venite, fra queste porte.
senz'orgoglio in voi bellezza,
senza fasto in voi grandezza.
La pudibonda romita stella
destinata a sfolgorar.
FEDERICA:
Congiunti! amici miei!
WALTER:
Nobil signora!
Bella nepote,
il mio Rodolfo implora
l'onor di favellarti.
Io la bandita caccia
intanto affretter.
(piano a Rodolfo)
M'udisti?
(Tutti partono,
meno Federica e Rodolfo)
RODOLFO:
( d'uopo al suo cuor generoso fidarsi appien. ) Duchessa . . .Scene VII
The Duchess with attendants, Ladies, Pages, Servants, Archers
The Company of the DUCHESSE:
Like the smile of a friendly destiny,
come, gentle lady, through this door.
In you, beauty is without pride,
Greatness is without pomp.
The modest solitary star
Is destined to blaze
FEDERICA:
My relations! My friends!
WALTER:
Noble lady!
Beautiful niece,
my Rodolfo begs the honour
Of speech with you.
In the mean time, I will hasten
The announced hunt.
(quietly to Rodolfo)
Do you heed me?
(All leave
except Federica and Rodolfo)
RODOLFO:
(I must trust myself fully to her generous heart ) Duchess . . .
FEDERICA:
1:11 Duchessa tu m'appelli!
Federica son io;
non ho cessato per te d'esserla mai!
Se cangi la fortuna,
io non cangiai.
1:12 Dall'aule raggianti
di vano splendor
al tetto natio volava il desir,
l dove sorgea dal vergin mio cor
la prima speranza, il primo sospir!
RODOLFO:
Degl'anni primieri le gioie innocenti
con me dividesti, divisi con te.
Le pene segrete degl'anni pi ardenti
or deggio svelarti,
prostrato al tuo pi.
FEDERICA:
Deh! sorge, Rodolfo,
tu sembri turbato!
RODOLFO:
Non giova negarlo,
pur troppo lo sono.
FEDERICA:
Ah! parla!
RODOLFO:
M'astringe un padre spietato
di fallo non mio
a chieder perdono . . .
FEDERICA:
Che intendo!
RODOLFO:
S vaga, s eccelsa consorte a me destinata il cielo non ha . . .
FEDERICA:
Oh! spiegati.
RODOLFO:
Ad altra m'avvince la sorte . . .
FEDERICA:
Ad altra!
RODOLFO:
Piet!
Deh! la parola amara
perdona al labbro mio!
Potea seguiriti all'ara,
mentir, dinanzi a Dio?
Pria d'offiriti un core
che avvampa d'altro amore,
la destra mia traffiggerlo
a' piedi tuoi sapr!
FEDERICA
Arma, se vuoi, la mano,
in sen mi scaglia il brando.
M'udrai, crudele, insano,
a te perdonar spirando;
ma da geloso core
non aspettar favore;
amor sprezzato furia
che perdonar non sa.
(Partono)FEDERICA:
Duchess you call me!
I am Federica:
I have never stopped being that to you!
Although my fortune changed,
I did not change.
From the halls shining
with vain splendour
my longing flew to my native home
There where the first hope, the first sigh
Of my virgin heart was raised!
RODOLFO:
The innocent joys of our early years
You shared with me, I shared with you.
Now I must fall at your feet
and reveal to you
The secret pains of more ardent years.
FEDERICA:
Heavens! Get up, Rodolfo,
You seem troubled!
RODOLFO:
It's no use denying it,
I am only too much so.
FEDERICA:
Ah! Speak!
RODOLFO:
A ruthless father compels me
To ask pardon for a error
which is not mine..
FEDERICA:
What do I hear!
RODOLFO:
Heaven has not destined
Such a graceful, exalted spouse for me
FEDERICA:
Oh! Explain yourself.
RODOLFO:
Fate has bound me to another. . .
FEDERICA:
To another!
RODOLFO:
Have mercy!
Alas! Pardon the bitter words
From my lips!
Could I follow you to the altar,
Lie before God?
Before offering you a heart
Which burns with another love
My right hand will pierce it
At your feet!
FEDERICA
Take up arms if you wish,
thrust the sword into my breast
You will hear me, cruel madman
pardon you as I die.
But don't await a favour
From a jealous heart;
Scorned love is a fury
That does not know how to forgive
(They leave)
Scene VIII
Voci in lontananza.
CACCIATORI
1:13 Sciogliete i levrieri,
spronate i destrieri,
allegra, gioconda la caccia sar.
Si cingan le selve...- snidiamo le belve...-
La preda sicura, sfuggir non potr...
Scene VIII
Inside the house of Miller. Two side doors, one leading to Miller's room, another to that of Luisa, by the first hangs a sword and an old soldier's uniform: Through the hall can be seen a window through which can be glimpsed part of the Church. From the mountains and valleys around can be heard the shouts and the thudding of instruments of chase. Voices in the distance
Hunters
Loose the hounds,
spur the horses,
The hunt will be jolly, merry
Let the woods be surrounded, let us unearth the wild beasts. The prey is certain, it will not be able to escape..
Scene IX
Luisa, quindi Miller
LUISA: (accostandosi alla finestra)
Nol veggo . . . allontanarsi dalla caccia
e qui venir promise.
CACCIATORI:
Si cingan le selve snidiamo le belve,
la preda sicura,
sfuggir non potr.
(Entra Miller e si getta sopra una seggiola)
LUISA:
O padre mio! Che fu?
Sembri agitato!
MILLER:
Il mio timore non era vano . . .
sei tradita!
LUISA:
Io? Come? Narra . . .
MILLER:
Sembianza e nome colui ment!
LUISA:
Carlo? Fia ver?
MILLER:
Del Conte di Walter figlio,
qual comanda il padre,
egli a stringer s'appresta
splendide nozze.
LUISA:
Ria menzogna questa. Esser non puote.
MILLER:
Dal castello io vengo,
giunta la sposa.
LUISA:
Taci!
Uccider vuoi tua figlia?
MILLER:
Un seduttore accolse dunque
il tetto mio?
(aggirandosi per la stanza pieno d'ira, trovasi dinanzi alla sua vecchia divisa che pende dal muro)
Per questa d'onore assisa,
che il mio petto un giorno copr,
vendetta io giuro!
LUISA: (spaventata)
Padre!Scene IX
Luisa, then Miller
LUISA: (approaching the window)
I can't see anythinghe promised to leave the chase and come here.
CACCIATORI:
Let the woods be surrounded, let us unearth the wild beasts. The prey is certain, it will not be able to escape..
(Enter Miller who throws himself onto a seat)
LUISA:
O my father! What is it?
You seem agitated.
MILLER:
My fear was not for nothing,
You are betrayed!
LUISA:
I? How? Tell me . .
MILLER:
He lied about appearance and his name!
LUISA:
Carlo? Could it be true?
MILLER:
He is the son of the Count of Walter
Who is commanded by his father
To prepare to bind himself
to a splendid marriage.
LUISA:
This is a wicked lie. It could not be
MILLER:
I come from the castle,
The bride has arrived.
LUISA:
Be quiet!
Do you want to kill your daughter?
MILLER:
So, did my roof welcome
a seducer?
(Pacing around the room full of anger, he finds himself before his old arms which hang on the wall)
By this livery of honour
Which once covered my breast,
I swear vengeance!
LUISA: (terrified)
Father!
Scene X
Rodolfo, e Detti
RODOLFO:
(ancor sulla soglia, donde ha udito l'ultima parte del colloquio)
Luisa, non temer.
Non furo bugiarde le promesse di questo labbro. Il velo, ben veggo, tolto;
ma cangiato il nome,
sempre il cor lo stesso.
MILLER:
Che intendi?
LUISA:
Ahim!
(Rodolfo pone Luisa in ginocchio a' piedi di Miller, e prostrandosi anch'esso stringe nella sua
la destra di lei)
RODOLFO:
Son io tuo sposo!
Il padre testimone e Dio
chiamo del giuramento.
MILLER:
Ahi, sconsigliato!
E chi sottarci
all'ira potr del Conte?
LUISA:
Io gelo!
RODOLFO:
A me soltanto e al cielo
arcan tremendo manifesto!
Arcano che da me rivelato
a pi cadermi farebbi il Conte!
Alcun s'avanza . . .
desso! Mio padre!
(Entra Walter)
LUISA:
Ah! son perduta!
MILLER:
Egli? Egli stesso?Scene X
Rodolfo, and above
RODOLFO:
(still on the threshold where he heard the last part of the speech)
Luisa, do not fear. The promise made by these lips was not a lie. I see truly that the veil has been torn,
But although the name is changed
My heart is always the same
MILLER:
What do you mean?
LUISA:
Alas!
(Rodolfo puts Luisa on her knees at the feet of Miller and also prostrating himself, squeezes
her right hand with his)
RODOLFO:
I am your husband!
I call your father and God as
Witnesses of this oath
MILLER:
Ah, rash man!
And who can keep us
from the anger of the Count?
LUISA:
I'm cold with fear!
RODOLFO:
To me and to Heaven alone
Has a terrible secret been revealed
A secret which if I revealed it
Would make the Count fall at my feet!
Someone is coming .
It is he! My father!
(Enter Walter)
LUISA:
Ah! I am lost!
MILLER:
He? He himself?
Scene XI
Walter e detti
RODOLFO:
1:14 Tu, signor, fra queste soglie!
A che vieni?
WALTER:
A che? Nol rese lo spavento che vi coglie assai chiaro, assai palese?
Del mio dritto vengo armato
a stornar colpevol tresca.
MILLER, LUISA
Che?!
RODOLFO:
L'accento scellerato
pi dal labbro mai non t'esca,
puro amor ne infiamma il petto,
oltraggiarlo ad uom non lice.
WALTER:
Puro amor l'amore abbietto
di venduta seduttrice?
LUISA, RODOLFO, MILLER:
Ah!
(Rodolfo snuda la spada)
RODOLFO:
La vita mi donasti!
Lo rimembra . . .
t'ho pagato ora il dono!
MILLER:
A me portasti grave insulto!
Io fui soldato! Trema!
LUISA:
O Dio!
MILLER:
Mi ribollisce nelle vene il sangue ancor.
WALTER:
Ardiresti?
MILLER:
Tutto ardisce padre
offeso nell'onor!
WALTER:
Folle, or or ti pentirai
dell'audacia! Ol!Scene XI
Walter and above
RODOLFO:
You, my lord, on this threshold!
Why have you come here?
WALTER:
Why? didn't the terror which strikes you
make it very clear, very evident?
I come armed by my right
To avert a guilty love affair.
MILLER, LUISA
What?!
RODOLFO:
Let those villainous words
Never fall from your lips again,
Pure love inflames our breasts,
No man is allowed to insult it.
WALTER:
Pure love, the debased love
Of a sold seductress?
LUISA, RODOLFO, MILLER:
Ah!
(Rodolfo draws his sword)
RODOLFO:
You gave me life!
(sheathing his sword)
Remember this . .
I have now paid you for the gift1
MILLER:
You offered me a serious insult!
I was a soldier! Tremble!
LUISA:
O God!
MILLER:
The blood still boils in my veins.
WALTER:
Do you dare this?
MILLER:
A father whose honour is offended
dares everything.
WALTER:
Madman, you will be sorry for your boldness right now! Hey!
Scene XII
Accorre un drappello d'arcieri, seguito da Laura e da molti Contadini
ARCIERI
Signore?
LUISA:
Giusto ciel!
LAURA, CONTADINI:
Che avvenne mai?
RODOLFO:
E potresti, o genitore?
LAURA, CONTADINI:
Ei suo figlio!
WALTER:
Arretra, insano!
RODOLFO:
Odi prima . . .
WALTER:
Udir non vo'.
Ambo in ceppi.
LAURA, CONTADINI
Ah!
MILLER:
Disumano!
LUISA:
(caldendo alle ginocchia di Walter)
Al tuo pi . . .Scene XII
A troop of archers run up followed by Laura and many Peasants
Archers
My Lord
LUISA:
Righteous Heaven!
LAURA, PEASANTS:
Whatever has happened?
RODOLFO:
How could you, o parent?
LAURA, PEASANTS:
He is his son!
WALTER:
Stand back, madman!
RODOLFO:
First, listen. .
WALTER:
I don't want to listen.
Put them both in chains
LAURA, PEASANTS
Ah!
MILLER:
Inhuman monster!
LUISA:
(falling to her knees before Walter)
At your feet . . .
MILLER: (rialzandola)
Prostrata! . . . No!
1:15 Fra'mortali ancora oppressa
non tanto l'innocenza,
che si vegga genuflessa
d'un superbo alla presenza.
A quel Dio ti protra innante
de' malvagi punitor,
non a tal che ha d'uom sembiante,
e di belva in petto il cor.
RODOLFO:
Foco d'ira questo pianto . . .
cedi . . . cedi all'amor mio . . .
WALTER:
Tu piegarti, tu, non io,
devi o figlio, cieco, ingrato.
RODOLFO:
Non voler quel nodo infranto,
che tra noi formava Iddio.
WALTER:
Il mio cenno, il voler mio
immutabil come il fato!
LUISA:
Ad immagin tua creata,
o Signore, anch'io non fui?
E perch son calpestata
or qual fango da costui?
Perch? perch?
Deh, mi salva . . . deh, m'aita . . .
deh! non m'abbia l'oppressor!
Il tuo dono, la mia vita
pria riprenditi, Signor!
RODOLFO:
Cedi all'amor mio,
ah padre, cedi!
Negro vel mi sta sul ciglio!
Ho l'inferno in mezzo al cor!
Un istante ancor son figlio!
Un instante ho padre ancor!
WALTER:
Piegarti devi, non io, o figlio ingrato.
Fra il suo core e il cor paterno
frapponeste
un turpe amor.
Non pu il ciel, non pu l'inferno
involarvi al mio furor!
LAURA, ALCUNI CONTADINI:
Il suo pianto al pianto sforza!
Il suo duolo spezza il cor!
ARCIERI
Obbedirlo a tutti forza!
Egli padre, egli signor!
WALTER:
I cenni miei si compiano.
RODOLFO:
(mettendosi avanti a Luisa col ferro sguainato)
Da questo acciar svenato
cadr chi temerario s'avanza.
WALTER:
Forsennato!
(prende Luisa e la spinge fra gli arcieri)
In me lo scaglia.
RODOLFO:
O rabbia!
Se tratta fra catene la sposa mia,
nel carcere giuro seguirla.
WALTER:
Ebbene, la segui.
RODOLFO:
Ah! pria che l'abbiano quei vili in preda,
il core io le trapasso.
(lanciandosi fra gli arcieri, e mettendo la punta della spada
sul petto di Luisa)
WALTER:
Uccidila. Che tardi?
RODOLFO:
O mio furor!
Ah! tutto tentai, non restami
che un infernal consiglio
se crudo, inesorabile
tu rimarrai col figlio.
Trema! Svelato agl'uomini
sar dal labbro mio
come giungesti ad essere
Conte di Walter!
(Esce rapidamente)
WALTER
Dio! Rodolfo . . .
m'odi . . . arrestati . . .
costei lasciate, libera!
LAURA, CONTADINI, ARCIERI:
Fia ver!
LUISA, MILLER:
Pietoso ciel!
(Gli Arcieri partono: Luisa cade in ginocchio mezzo svenuta: gli altri le accorrono d'intorno).MILLER: (raising her)
Kneeling! . . . No!
Amongst mortals innocence
is not yet so oppressed
that it must be seen kneeling
In the presence of an arrogant man.
Kneel before that God
Who punishes evil; not to one who looks like a man, but has the heart of a wild beast in his chest.
RODOLFO:
These tears are the fire of anger
Yield, yield to my love
WALTER:
You must bend, you, not I
O blind, ungrateful son.
RODOLFO:
Do not wish to break that knot
Which God bound between us.
WALTER:
My order, my will
Is as unchangeable as fate!
LUISA:
Was I not created in your image
My Lord?
And why am I trodden down
Like mud by that man?
Why? Why?
God, save meGod, help me .
God! Don't let the tyrant have me!
Rather take back your gift,
My life, Lord!
RODOLFO:
Yield to my love,
ah father, yield!
A black veil covers my brow!
I have Hell in my heart!
Just for a moment, I am still your son!
Just for a moment I still have a father1
WALTER:
You must bend, not I, O ungrateful son.
To Luisa and Walter
Between his heart and the heart of his father, you have interposed
an indecent love.
Neither Heaven nor Hell will be able to bear you away from my anger now!
LAURA, PEASANTS:
Her tears force us to cry!
Her sorrow pierces the heart!
ARCHERS
All must obey him!
He is the father, he is the lord!
WALTER: (to the Archers)
Fulfil my orders.
RODOLFO:
(Placing himself in front of Luisa with a drawn sword)
Slain by this sword will the rash man fall that comes forward.
WALTER:
Madman!
(takes Luisa and pushes her towards the archers)
Let the blow be hurled at me.
RODOLFO:
O I burn with anger1
If my bride is dragged off in chains
I swear to follow her into prison.
WALTER:
Well then, follow her.
RODOLFO:
Ah! Before these evil men have her as their prey I will pierce her heart
(throws himself amongst the archers and places the point of his sword
to Luisa's breast)
WALTER:
Kill her. Why delay?
RODOLFO:
O my fury! Ah! I have tried everything, there remains to me
only an infernal expedient
if cruel, inexorable
you remain to your son.
Be afraid! It will be revealed to mankind
From my lips
How you came to be
The Count of Walter
(exits rapidly)
WALTER:
God! Rodolfo . . .
Listen to me. Stop . . .
Leave that woman, she is free!
LAURA, PEASANTS, Archers:
May it be true!
LUISA, MILLER:
Merciful Heaven!
(The Archers leave: Luisa falls to her knees half fainting, the others rush to surround her)
ATTO SECONDO
Scene I
Interno della casa di Miller. Laura e Contadini, poi Luisa
LAURA, CONTADINI: (accorrendo agitati)
1:16 Ah! Luisa, Luisa, ove sei?
LUISA: (uscendo)
Chi m'appella?
Voi certo recate
tristo annunzio!
LAURA:
Pur troppo!
CONTADINI:
E tu dei ascoltarlo.
LUISA:
Parlate, parlate.
LAURA, CONTADINI:
Al villaggio dai campi tornando
della roccia per ripido calle,
un fragor, che veniasi accostando,
a noi giunse dall'ima convalle;
eran passi e minaccie d'armati,
cui d'ambascia una voce frammista;
al ciglion della rupe affacciati
ne colp deplorabile vista!
Crudi sgherri traenti
un vegliardo fra catene!
LUISA:
Ah! mio padre!
LAURA, CONTADINI
Fa cor.
Havvi un Giusto, un Possente
che il guardo tien rivolto
sui miseri ognor!
LUISA:
O padre, o padre mio!
(s'incammina per uscire)
LAURA:
Dove?
LUISA:
Al castello.
(Entra Wurm)
LAURA, CONTADINI
Wurm!ACT Two
Scene I
Inside Miller's house. Laura and Peasants, then Luisa
LAURA, PEASANTS: (running up agitated)
Ah! Luisa, Luisa, where are you?
LUISA: (coming out)
Who is calling me?
You certainly have
a sad announcement to make!
LAURA:
Only too sad!
PEASANTS:
And you must hear it
LUISA:
Speak, speak.
LAURA, PEASANTS:
To the village from the fields around
Down the steep path down the cliff
A clamour which approached us,
Reached us from the deep vale
There were footsteps and the threats of armed men, amongst which was an anguished voice; On the brow of the cliff we were struck by a terrible sight!
Cruel assassins dragging off
an old man in chains!
LUISA:
Ah! My father!
LAURA, PEASANTS
Take heart
You have a righteous, powerful God
Who keeps a watch over
Over all his suffering people!
LUISA:
O father, O my father!
(turns to leave)
LAURA:
Where are you going?
LUISA:
To the castle
(Enter Wurm)
LAURA, PEASANTS
Wurm!
Scene II
Wurm e Detti
WURM: (a Luisa)
Ascoltarmi d'upo.
(ai contadini)
Uscite.
LUISA:

LAURA, CONTADINI
Havvi un Giusto, un Possente, ecc.Scene II
Wurm and above
WURM: (a Luisa)
You must listen to me
(to the Peasants)
Get out.
LUISA:
(I've gone cold1)
LAURA, PEASANTS
You have a righteous, powerful God
WURM:
1:17 Il padre tuo . . .
LUISA:
Finisci.
WURM:
Langue in dura prigion.
LUISA:
Reo di che fallo?
WURM:
Ei, del Conte vassallo,
farlo d'oltraggi
e di minacce segno ard!
Grave il delitto, grave la pen fia!
LUISA:
D'interrogarti io tremo!
WURM:
Che val tacerlo?
Sul canuto suo crin pende la scure.
LUISA:
Ah! Taci, taci!
WURM:
Eppure, tu puoi salvarlo.
LUISA:
Io? Come?
WURM:
A te m'invia l'offesa Conte:
un foglio vergar t'impone,
e prezzo ne fia
lo scampo di tuo padre.
LUISA:
Un foglio?WURM:
Your father . . .
LUISA:
Go on.
WURM:
Languishes in hard imprisonment.
LUISA:
Guilty of what crime?
WURM:
He, the vassal of the Count, dared to abuse and make threatening gestures at him! The crime is serious and the punishment will be.
LUISA:
I fear to ask you further!
WURM:
What is the use of keeping quiet?
The axe hangs over his white head.
LUISA:
Ah! Quiet, quiet!
WURM:
Nevertheless, you can save him.
LUISA:
I? How?
WURM:
The offended Count sent me:
To get you to write a letter,
And the reward will be
the escape of your father.
LUISA:
A letter?
WURM:
(accennando a Luisa una tavola, su cui v'ha l'occorrente per scrivere)
Scrivi!
"Wurm, io giammai Rodolfo non amai"
(Luisa scrive)
"Il suo lignaggio erami noto,
e volli stringerlo fra mie reti . . ."
LUISA:
E deggio?
WURM:
Dei salvar tuo padre.
(Luisa scrive)
"Ambizion mi vinsetutto svan
perdona.
Ritorno al primo affetto,
e di Rodolfo ad evitar gli sdegni,
come la notte regni,
vieni, ed insieme fuggirem."
LUISA:
Che!
WURM:
Scrivi.
LUISA:
E segnar questa mano
potrebbe l'onta mia?
Lo speri invano.
1:18 Tu puniscimi, o Signore,
se t'offesi e paga io sono
ma de' barbari al furore
non lasciarmi in abbandono.
A scampar da fato estremo
innocente genitor
chieggon essi, a dirlo io fremo,
chieggon essi
della figlia il disonor!WURM:
(indicating a table to Luisa, on which were writing implements)
Write!
"Wurm, I never loved Rodolfo "
(Luisa writes)
"His lineage was known to me,
And I wanted to bind him in my nets."
LUISA:
And must I do this?
WURM:
You must, to save your father.
(Luisa writes)
"Ambition won me over. It has all faded away, forgive me,
I return to my first love,
And in order to avoid Rodolfo's anger
When night has come,
Come and we will flee together."
LUISA:
What!
WURM:
Write.
LUISA:
And could this hand
Sign my shame?
You hope it in vain.
Punish me o lord, if I have offended you and I will be contented
But don't abandon me
To the fury of barbarous men.
To let my innocent parent
Escape his deadly fate
They ask, I tremble to say it,
They ask for
the dishonour of his daughter
WURM:
Qui nulla s'attenta imporre al tuo core;
tu libera sei.
Ti lascio.
LUISA:
Spietato! E il misero vecchio?
WURM:
L'udisti: egli muore.
LUISA:
E libera io sono!
(dando il foglio a Wurm)
Il foglio vergato.
WURM:
Sul capo del padre,
spontaneo lo scritto,
Luisa, mi giura
che all'uopo dirai.
LUISA:
Lo giuro.
WURM:
Un sol cenno ancor
t' prescritto.
LUISA:
Io t'odo.
WURM:
Al castello venirne dovrai,
ed ivi al cospetto di nobil signora
accesa mostrati . . . di Wurm.
LUISA:
Di te?
WURM:
Acerba la prova!
LUISA:
No.
WURM:
Duolmi!
LUISA:
Ed allora?
WURM:
Allora . . .
LUISA:
Mio padre?
WURM:
Fia salvo.WURM:
No one here is trying to impose
on your heart. You are free.
I'm leaving you.
LUISA:
Heartless man! And the poor old man
WURM:
You heard. He dies.
LUISA:
And I am free!
(giving the paper to Wurm)
The paper is written.
WURM:
On the head of your father, swear to me
that if necessary, you will say
that it was written
of your own free will
LUISA:
I swear it.
WURM:
There is only one more thing
you have to do.
LUISA:
I'm listening to you.
WURM:
You must come to the castle,
And there the presence of the noble lady
You must show passion for Wurm.
LUISA:
For you?
WURM:
It is a harsh trial!
LUISA:
No.
WURM:
You pain me!
LUISA:
And then?
WURM:
Then. . .
LUISA:
My father?
WURM:
Will be saved
LUISA:
Merc.
1:20 A brani, a brani, o perfido
il cor tu m'hai squarciato!
Almen t'affertta a rendermi
il padre, il padre sventurato.
Di morte il fero brivido
tutta m'invade omai.
Mi chiuda almeno i rai
la man del genitore!
WURM:
Coraggio: il tempo farmaco
d'ogni cordoglio umano.
Di stringer la tua mano
speranza nutro ancor.LUISA:
Mercy
Into pieces o wicked man
You have torn my heart into pieces
At least hasten to give me back
My father, my unfortunate father.
The quiver of death's sword
Now completely invades me.
At least let the hand of my father
Close my eyes!
WURM:
Courage: Time is the healer
Of every human affliction
I still nourish the hope
Of obtaining your hand.
Scene III
Il castello: appartamento di Walter. Walter, Wurm, Federica
WALTER:
2:1 Egli delira: sul mattin degli anni
vinta da cieco affetto
spesso ragion!
Del senno empia il difetto
pel figlio il padre!
L'opra mia si compia,
nulla cangiar mi debbe:
esser pietoso crudelt sarebbe.Scene III
The castle: Walter's apartment. Walter, Wurm, Federica
WALTER:
He is deluded: In the morning
of one's years, reason is often vanquished by blind affection!
Let the father make up for
the lack of sense in his son.
Let my task be completed
Nothing must change me:
it would be cruel to be kind.
Scene IV
Wurm e detti
WALTER:
Ebben?
WURM:
Tutte apprestai della trama le fila.
WALTER:
Oh! di': Luisa?
WURM:
Come previdi gi, vinta,
conquisa da crudelo spavento,
alle minaccie s'arrendea;
per calle recondito qui tratta verr.
WALTER:
Ma il foglio?
WURM:
Compra man recar lo deve
a Rodolfo;
la vittoria certa!
Eppur dal primo assalto
qual poter vi respinse
io non intendo!Scene IV
Wurm and above
WALTER:
Well?
WURM:
I have prepared all the details of the plot.
WALTER:
Oh! Tell me, Luisa?
WURM:
As you foresaw, vanquished
Conquered by cruel fear,
She surrendered to the threats. She is being brought here by a hidden path
WALTER:
But the letter?
WURM:
A paid henchman must give it
to Rodolfo
Victory is certain!
Nevertheless I don't understand
what power pushed you back
from the first assault!
WALTER:
Inatteso periglio!
Del figlio una minaccia!
Ingrato figlio!
2:2 L'alto retaggio non ho bramato
di mio cugino, che sol per esso!
Ad ottenerlo, contaminato
mi son pur troppo di nero eccesso!
WURM:
In punto feci del mio signore
nel palesarvi la mente ascosa!
A me, cui sempre fidava il core,
scovr la scelta ei d'una sposa.
WALTER:
Timori nacquero in me ben tristi!
WURM:
Aver quel nodo figli potea!
WALTER:
Ad acquetarmi tu suggeristi
orribil mezzo!
WURM:
Varcar dovea l'irta foresta notturno il Conte. Noi l'appostammo, e . . .
WALTER:
Non seguir . . .
Sento dizzarsi le chiome in fronte!
Tutto il mio sangue rabbrividir!
WURM:
ver, che giova parlar d'evento
cui notte eterna fra' suoi misteri,
ha gi sepolto?
WALTER:
Sepolto?
WURM:
Spento il sire antico da' masnadieri,
qual noi spargemmo, tutti han creduto.
WALTER:
No, tutti! Al rombo mio figlio accorse
dell'armi nostre . . . non era muto
ancor quel labbro!
WURM:
Che intendo! Ah! forse? . . .
WALTER:
In quel supremo, terribil punto
Walter nomava . . .
WURM:
Chi?
WALTER:
Gli assassin!
WURM:
O me perduto!WALTER:
Unexpected danger!
A threat from my son!
My ungrateful son!
I wanted the noble heritage
of my cousin only for my son!
To get it, I contaminated myself with only too dark a violent crime.
WURM:
I put an end to my lord
by revealing his hidden thoughts to you! To me, to whom he always entrusted his heart, he revealed his choice of a wife.
WALTER:
Such sad fears are born in me!
WURM:
That bond could have had sons
WALTER:
You suggested a horrible means
To reassure me!
WURM:
The Count had to cross the rugged forest at night. We ambushed him and . . .
WALTER:
Don't continue .
I can feel the hair on my head standing up. All my blood runs cold!
WURM:
Is it true, what use is it to speak of the event which eternal night has already buried amongst its secrets?
WALTER:
Buried?
WURM:
The ancient lord was killed by bandits,
Thus we spread the word, all believed it.
WALTER:
Not all! At the noise of our armies,
my son came running up...those lips
are not yet silent
WURM:
What do I hear! Ah! Perhaps?
WALTER:
In that final, terrible moment
He named Walter.
WURM:
Who?
WALTER:
The murderers!
WURM:
O I am lost!
WALTER:
Sol tu? Congiunto
non t'ha Satanno a' miei destini?
2:3 O meco incolume sarai, lo giuro,
o sul patibolo verr con te.
WURM:
(Pi questo capo non sicuro!
Potria del ceppo cadere a pi!)WALTER:
Only you? Hasn't Satan joined
your fate To mine?
Either you will be unhurt with me, I swear it, or I will come to the scaffold with you.
WURM:
(My head is no longer safe!
I might fall at the foot of the block!)
WALTER:
2:4 Vien la Duchessa!
Scene V
Federica, e Detto
FEDERICA:
Conte!
(Ad un segno di Walter, Wurm si ritira)
WALTER:
Il detto mio confermo:
di Rodolfo nel sen,
qual d'un infermo il delirio,
s'apprese amor che spento fia.
FEDERICA:
Spento?
WALTER:
Ed in breve.
FEDERICA:
Io temo!
WALTER:
Indarno; di Luisa il core
mai Rodolfo non ebbe;
d'altri colei.
FEDERICA:
Fia vero? E chi potrebbe attestarlo?
WALTER:
Ella stessa.
FEDERICA:
Ella!
WALTER:
Qual tu chiedesti qui fu condotta.
FEDERICA:
Gi:!
WALTER:
Non lo volesti?WALTER:
The Duchess is coming
Scene V
Federica, and Above
FEDERICA:
Count!
(At a sign from Walter, Wurm withdraws)
WALTER:
I confirm my words:
Like the ravings of a sick man
a love seized Rodolfo's heart
which will be extinguished.
FEDERICA:
Extinguished?
WALTER:
And soon.
FEDERICA:
I'm afraid!
WALTER:
No need; Rodolfo never had
Luisa's heart;
She belongs to another.
FEDERICA:
Could it be true? And who may be able to certify this?
WALTER:
She herself.
FEDERICA:
She!
WALTER:
Just as you asked she was brought here
FEDERICA:
Already!
WALTER:
Don't you want it?
Scene VI
La Duchessa siede, cercando ricomporsi dal suo turbamento. Walter apre una porta segreta, donde esce Luisa, accompagnata da Wurm.
WALTER:
Presentarti alla Duchessa
Puoi Luisa - Intendi?
DUCHESSA: (Con sussiego)
Appressa.
WURM: (Piano a Luisa)
Ti rammenta in qual periglio
tuo padre!
LUISA:
(O mio terror!)
FEDERICA:
(Dolce aspetto!
Il volto, il ciglio,
tutto spira in lei candore!)
LUISA:
(A costei sar concesso,
quanto il ciel m'avea promesso!)
FEDERICA:
Mi par che manchi in te coraggio
d'erger gl'occhi al mio sembiante!
WALTER:
Ella nata in un villagio!Scene VI
The Duchess sits, seeking to recover from her perturbation. Walter opens a secret door from which comes Luisa, accompanied by Wurm.
WALTER:
Luisa, you must present yourself
To the Duchess - Do you understand?
DUCHESSE: (haughtily)
Come closer
WURM: (Quietly to Luisa)
Remember what danger
your father is in.
LUISA:
(O my fear!)
FEDERICA:
(A gentle appearance!
Her face, her brow
All breathes of her innocence!)
LUISA:
(To her will be granted
all that Heaven had promised to me!)
FEDERICA:
It seems that you lack the courage
To raise your eyes to my face!
WALTER:
She was born in a village!
WURM:
D'alta dama or tratta innante!
LUISA:
(Rea fucina d'empie frodi
son costor!)
FEDERICA:
Luisa, m'odi.
Far mi puote un sol tuo detto
sventurata, o appien felice!
Non mentir! Ma no, l'aspetto
tu non hai di mentitrice!
LUISA:
(Chi soffr maggior affanno!)
FEDERICA:
Ami tu?
LUISA:
(Destin tiranno!)
FEDERICA:
Ami tu?
LUISA:
Amo.
FEDERICA:
E chi? Chi?
LUISA:
Wurm!
(Indegno!)
FEDERICA:
Ma Rodolfo?
LUISA:
Fra noi venne sconosciuto.
A qual disegno io lo ignoro.
FEDERICA:
E non ottenne mai d'amor lusinghe,
accenti da Luisa?WURM:
Now brought before a noble lady!
LUISA:
(those people are the false forgers
of wicked fraud)
FEDERICA:
Luisa, listen to me.
A single word from you
Can make me unhappy or completely happy! Don't lie! But no, you don't
Look like a liar!
LUISA:
(Whoever suffered greater distress!)
FEDERICA:
Do you love?
LUISA:
(Tyrant fate!)
FEDERICA:
Do you love?
LUISA:
I love.
FEDERICA:
And who? Who?
LUISA:
Wurm!
(Unworthy man!)
FEDERICA:
But Rodolfo?
LUISA:
He came amongst us as a stranger
For what scheme I don't know.
FEDERICA:
And did he ever obtain a false promise of love, From the words of Luisa?
LUISA:
(Quai momenti!)
FEDERICA:
Di'.
LUISA:
No! Mai.
FEDERICA:
(La speme in cor mi si avviva!)
LUISA:
(Esulta!)
FEDERICA:
Parmi - s -
cangiasti di colore!
Ah! che fia? Non ingannarmi!
Non tradir te stessa!
LUISA:
(O cielo!)
WALTER:
(Oserebbe?)
FEDERICA:
Parla.
WURM:
(Io gelo!)
FEDERICA:
Dell'arcano squarcia il manto
se un arcano in sen tu chiudi.
LUISA:
Io . . .
FEDERICA:
Favella.
WALTER:
S, per quanto ami il padre!
LUISA:
(Il padre! O crudi!)
WURM:
Via, che tardi?
FEDERICA:
Ebben?
LUISA: (accennando Wurm)
Lo stesso da Luisa udrete ognor,
che alimento sol per esso
fido, immenso, ardente amore!
(Come celar le smanie
del mio geloso amore?
Ahim, l'infranto core
pi reggere non pu!
Se qui rimango, esanime
a' piedi suoi cadr!)
FEDERICA:
(Un sogno di letizia
par quel ch'io veggo e sento! . . .
No, mai s gran contento
quest'alma non prov!
Frena, mio core, i palpiti,
o di piacer morr)
WALTER E WURM:
(Pinto ha di vivo giubilo
il sorridente viso!
Fortuna in quel sorriso
propizia balen!
Ben io fermarla, e stringerne
l'infido crin sapr)
(La Duchessa si ritira, seguita da Walter; Wurm riconduce Luisa per l'uscio segreto).LUISA:
(What terrible times!)
FEDERICA:
Speak.
LUISA:
No! Never.
FEDERICA:
(Hope revives in my heart!)
LUISA:
(She rejoices!)
FEDERICA:
It seem to me, yes,
You have changed colour!
Ah! What is happening? Don't deceive me! Don't betray yourself!
LUISA:
(O Heavens!)
WALTER:
(Would she dare?)
FEDERICA:
Speak.
WURM:
(I'm cold with fear!)
FEDERICA:
Tear the cloak of secrecy
If you hide a secret in your breast.
LUISA:
I
FEDERICA:
Speak.
WALTER:
Yes, by the love you bear your father!
LUISA:
(My father! O cruel men!)
WURM:
Come, what's the delay?
FEDERICA:
Well?
LUISA: (indicating Wurm)
You will hear always hear the same from Luisa, That I nurtured only for him
A faithful, immense, ardent love!
(How can I hide the longings
Of my jealous love?
Alas, I can no longer bear
my broken heart!
If I remain, I will fall
Lifeless at her feet!)
FEDERICA:
(I seem to see and hear
A dream of joy! . . .
No, This soul has never felt
Such great happiness!
My heart, slow you beatings
Or I will die of happiness)
WALTER WURM:
(Lively rejoicing has painted on her
A smiling face!
Fortune shines propitious
In that smile!
I well know how to stop her and grasp her faithless hair)
(The Duchess withdraws followed by Walter; Wurm leads Luisa out by the secret door).
Scene VII
Giardino pensile del castello. Rodolfo viene precipitoso da un appartamento. Ha il foglio di Luisa tra le mani; un contadino lo segue.
RODOLFO:
2:5 Il foglio dunque?
CONTADINO:
Io tutto gi vi narrai!
RODOLFO:
Mi giova udirlo ancor.
CONTADINO:
Segreta e viva prece a man giunte mi fe' Luisa,
onde recarlo a Wurm . . .
RODOLFO:
E d'evitar la mia presenza . . .
CONTADINO
Mi repet pi volte.
Sospetto incerto di non so qual trama,
e speme di mercede
a voi m'han tratto.
RODOLFO: (gettandogli una borsa)
Esci.
(Il contadino esce)
Ol?
(Comparisce un servo)Scene VII
The hanging garden of the castle. Rodolfo comes rushing from the apartment. He has Luisa's letter in his hands, a peasant follows him.
RODOLFO:
What of the letter?
PEASANT:
I have already told you everything
RODOLFO:
It will help me to hear it again.
PEASANT:
Luisa begged me secretly and strongly,
with joined hands
so I brought it to Wurm
RODOLFO:
And to avoid my presence. . .
PEASANT
She repeated it several times.
An uncertain suspicion of I know not what plot and hope of reward
has brought me to you.
RODOLFO: (throwing him a purse)
Go.
(The peasant goes)
Hey?
(A servant appears)
Wurm.
(Il servo parte)
Oh! fede negar potessi
agl'occhi miei!
Se cielo e terra, se mortali ed angeli
attestarmi volesser ch'ella non rea,
mentite! io risponder dovrei, tutti mentite.
(mostrando il foglio)
Son cifre sue! Tanta perfidia! Un'alma
s nera! s mendace!
Ben la conobbe il padre!
Ma dunque i giuri, le speranze, la gioia,
le lagrime, l'affanno?
Tutto menzogna, tradimento, inganno!
2:6 Quando le sere al placido
chiaror d'un ciel stellato
meco figgea nell'etere
lo sguardo innamorato,
e questa mano stringermi
dalla sua man sentia . . .
ah! mi tradia!
Allor, ch'io muto, estatico
da' labbri suoi pendea,
ed ella in suon angelico,
"amo te sol" dicea,
tal che sembr l'empireo
aprirsi all'alma mia!
Ah! mi tradia!Wurm.
(The servant leaves)
Oh! If only I could deny faith
in my own eyes!
If Heaven and earth, if mortals and angels wanted to bear witness to me that she is not false, "you lie!" I would have to reply, "you are all lying".
(Showing the letter)
That is her handwriting! Such treachery!
Such a black soul! So mendacious
My father knew her well! But then, the promises, the hopes, the joy
The tears, the anguish?
All is a lie, treachery, deception!
When, in the evenings,
in the peaceful glimmer of a starry sky,
With me she fixed
her loving glance towards the heavens
and I felt this hand of min
pressed by her hand.
ah! She betrayed me!
Then, When I silent and ecstatic
Hung on her every word,
And with angelic tones she said,
"I love only you"
so that it seemed that Paradise
Opened to my soul!
Ah! She betrayed me
Scene VIII
Wurm e Detto
WURM:

RODOLFO:

WURM:
Oh!
RODOLFO:
(presentandogli due pistole)
Scegliere tu di.
WURM:
(cercando di allontanarsi)
Signor . . .
RODOLFO:

Meco ad un punto solo
spento cader al suolo t' forza . . .WURM:
(Inferno aiutami!)
(Scarica la pistola in aria). Scene VIII

WURM:

RODOLFO:

RODOLFO:

You must choose.
WURM:
(trying to get away)

RODOLFO:

You and I must fall to the ground dead
On the same timeWURM:
(Hell help me!)
(Fires the piston in the air)

RODOLFO:

RODOLFO:
Ah! I will be a fool!

RODOLFO:
Come?
WALTER:
Altre nozze attestino
il tuo disprezzo ad essa!
RODOLFO:

RODOLFO:
Io? S, lo vo', lo deggio . . .
Che parlo? Ahim, vaneggio!
WALTER:
Rodolfo, non pentirti.
RODOLFO:
Ove mi sia non so!
WALTER:
T'arrendi a me,

WALTER:
No . . . revenge!
RODOLFO:
How?
WALTER:
Another marriage will bear witness
Of your scorn for her!
RODOLFO:
What do you mean?
WALTER:
Lead the Duchess to the marriage altar.
RODOLFO:
I? Yes, I want to, I must. . .
What am I saying? Alas, I'm delirious.
WALTER:
Rodolfo, don't repent.
RODOLFO:
I don't know where I am!
WALTER:
Surrender to me
Your father, no, could not betray you
RODOLFO:
2:8 L'ara, o l'avello apprestami.
Al fato io m'abbandono.
Non temo . . . Non desidero . . .
Un disperato io sono!
Or la mia brama volgere
nemmeno al ciel potrei,

ATTO TERZO
Scene I
LAURA, CONTADINE:
2:9 Come in un giorno solo,
come ha potuto il duolo
stampar su quella fronte
cos funeste impronte?
Sembra mietuto giglio
da vomere crudel . . .
CONTADINE:
Un angiol che in esilio
quaggi mandava il ciel.
LAURA:
Ahim!
O dolce amica, e ristorar non vuoi
di qualche cibo le affralite membra?
LUISA:
No.ACT TERZO
Scene I
Miller's house. The window is open and through it can be seen the Church lit from within.. Luisa writes at a table on which burns a lamp: On the same table is a hamper of fruit, and a cup full of milk; in one corner of the room Laura and other Peasants who sadly contemplate Luisa.
LAURA, Peasant girls
How, in a single day
How has sorrow been able
To stamp its gloomy imprint
Thus on her forehead?
She's like a lily furrowed
By a cruel plough
Peasant Girls
An angel who Heaven
Sent down here in exile
LAURA:
Alas! O sweet friend, don't you wish
To heal the frailty of your limbs with some food?
LUISA:
No.
CONTADINE:
Cedi; all'amist cedi, Luisa.
LUISA:
La ripugnanza mia
rispettate . . . lo imploro.
(A questo labbro pi non s'appresser terreno cibo!
Gi col pensier delibo le celesti dolcezze!)
Il tempio, amiche, perch splende cos?
Tacete?
CONTADINE:
Ignare siam.
LAURA:
La novella signoria con pompa sacra
inaugura il Conte.
(Luisa torna a scrivere)
Ah! l'infelice ignori
quale rito nuzial s'appresta,
e qual esser lo sposo debbe!
A s crudele annunzio ella morrebbe!Peasant girls
Yield, yield to friendship Luisa.
LUISA:
Respect my aversion
I beg you.
(No earthly food will come near these lips any more!
In my thoughts, I already sample the sweetness of Heaven!)
The church, friends, why is it shining like that? Why are you silent?
Peasant Girls
We don't know
LAURA:
The Count inaugurates his new lordship
with a sacred ceremony.
(Luisa returns to writing)
Ah! May the unhappy girl never know
What nuptial ceremony is being prepared and who the groom is. At such a cruel announcement she would die!
Scene II
Miller e Detta
MILLER:
Luisa! figlia mia!
LAURA:
Qual casto amplesso
deh! non turbiam;
sia testimon soltanto
tra figlia e padre Iddio!
(Si ritira colle compagne)Scene II
Miller and above
MILLER:
Luisa! My daughter!
LAURA:
Let us not disturb
Alas! Such chaste intimacy
Let God alone be the witness
Between father and daughter!
(She withdraws with the company)
MILLER:
2:10 Pallida, mesta sei!
LUISA:
No, padre mio, tranquilla io son.
MILLER:
Del genitore, oh quanto caro
Lo scampo a te costava!
Io tutto da Wurm appresi.
LUISA:
Tutto!?
MILLER:
All'amor tuo per me rinunziasti.
LUISA:
ver.
(Ma in terra!)
MILLER:
(Quella calma funesta!
Il cor mi serra non so
qual rio presagio!)
(prende in mano il foglio)
Che foglio questo?
LUISA:
Al suo destin prometti,
se m'ami, o padre,
che recato ei fia.
(Miller apre il foglio e legge)MILLER:
You are pale, sad!
LUISA:
No, my father, I am calm.
MILLER:
O how dearly the escape
Of your father cost you!
I learnt everything from Wurm.
LUISA:
Everything?
MILLER:
You gave up your love for me.
LUISA:
It is true.
(But only on earth!)
MILLER:
(How calm and sorrowful!
I know not what evil foreboding
clutches at my heart!
(takes the letter in his hand)
What letter is this?
LUISA:
If you love me, O father
Promise that it will be brought
to its destination
(Miller opens the letter and reads it)
MILLER:
"Orribil tradimento
ne disgiunse, o Rodolfo;
un giuramento
pi dir mi toglie;
havvi dimora, in cui n inganno pu,
n giuro aver possanza alcuna;
ivi t'aspetto; come di mezzanotte
udrai la squilla, vieni . . ."
(Gli cade il foglio di mano)
Sotto al mio pi il suol vacilla!
(Resta un momento ambasciato e silenzioso, indi volgesi a Luisa con voce tremula)
Quella dimora . . .
Mancarmi sento!
Quella dimora saria? . . .
LUISA:
La tomba.
Perch t'invade s gran spavento?
MILLER:
Ah! sul mio capo un fulmin piomba!MILLER:
"A terrible betrayal
parted us, O Rodolfo
an oath holds me back
from saying more;
There is a place where neither deception
nor oath can have any power;
There I await you, when at midnight
You hear the bells, come. . ."
(The letter falls from his hand)
The ground sways beneath my feet!
(He remains a moment anguished and silent , then he turned to Luisa with a trembling voice)
What place . . .
I feel faint!
What place will it be? . .
LUISA:
The grave
Why are you filled with such great terror
MILLER:
Ah! A thunderbolt falls on my head!
LUISA:
2:11 La tomba un letto sparso di fiori,
in cui del giusto
la spoglia dorme;
sol pei colpevoli, tremanti cori
veste la morte
orride forme;
ma per due candide alme fedeli
la sua presenza non ha terror . . .
dessa un angelo che schiude i cieli,
ove in eterno sorride amor.
MILLER:
Figlia? Compreso d'orror io sono!
Figlia . . .
potresti contro te stessa? . . .
Pel suicida non v'ha perdono!
LUISA:
colpa amore?
MILLER:
Cessa, deh! cessa!
The grave is a bed scattered with flowers
In which the remains
of the righteous sleep;
Only for the guilty, trembling hearts
Does death clothe itself
in a terrible form;
But for two pure faithful souls
Her presence has no fear . . .
She is an angel who opens up Heavens,
Where love smiles for eternity
MILLER:
Daughter? I am seized with horror!
Daughter Could you do that against yourself?. . .
There is no forgiveness for suicide!
LUISA:
Is love a sin?
MILLER:
Stop, alas! stop!
Behold my face is furrowed with lines,
The weight of age turns my hair white.
The love which a father has sown
He should reap in his later years.
And could you , cruel girl,
Get me ready for a harvest of tears
and pain?
Ah! Into the grave which you want to open
Let your father descend first!
LUISA:
Quanto colpevole, ahim! son io.
Ah! no, ti calma, o padre mio.
Non pianger . . . m'odi!
MILLER:
Luisa . . .
LUISA:
(facendo in pezzi il foglio)
Il foglio lacero, annullo.
MILLER:
Vuoi dunque? . . .
LUISA:
Io voglio per te, buon padre,
restare in vita.
MILLER:
Figlia?
LUISA:
La figlia, vedi, pentita
al pi ti cade.
MILLER:
No, figlia mia,
sorgi, qui sul mio cor.
LUISA:
Padre, ah, mio padre!
LUISA, MILLER:
Ah! in quest'amplesso l'anima oblia
Quanti martiri prov finor.
LUISA:
Per fuggiam,
qui rio periglio
ne cingerebbe.
MILLER:
Sano consiglio!LUISA:
How guilty I am, alas!
Ah! no, calm yourself, O my father
Don't weep. Listen to me!
MILLER:
Luisa . . .
LUISA:
(tearing the paper into pieces)
I tear up the letter, destroy it.
MILLER:
What do you want then?
LUISA:
I want to remain alive
For you good father
MILLER:
Daughter?
LUISA:
Behold your daughter, penitent
Falling at your feet.
MILLER:
No, my daughter
Get up, come here to my heart.
LUISA:
Father, Ah, my father!
LUISA, MILLER:
Ah! in this embrace the soul forgets
the many sorrows it felt before.LUISA:
Nevertheless let us flee
Here, treacherous danger
may surround us
MILLER:
Sound advice!
LUISA:
I lumi al sonno chiudi brev'ora,
ancor lontano troppo il d.
Come s'appressi la nuova aurora
noi partiremo.
MILLER:
S, figlia, s.LUISA:
Close your eyes in sleep for a short time
The day is still too far away
When the new dawn approaches
We will leave.
MILLER:
Yes daughter, yes.
MILLER, LUISA:
2:12 Andrem, raminghi e poveri,
ove il destin ci porta.
Un pan chiedendo agli uomini
andrem di porta in porta.
Forse talor le ciglia
noi bagnerem di pianto,
ma sempre al padre accanto
la figlia sua star.
Quel padre e quella figlia
Iddio benedir!
Al nuovo albore noi partirem.
Come s'appressi la nuova aurora noi partirem.
(Miller si ritira)
(Si ode il suono d'organo dalla chiesa)MILLER, LUISA:
We will go wandering and poor
Where ever destiny carries us.
Begging people for our bread
We will go from door to door.
Perhaps at times our eyes
We will bathe with tears
But always next to her father
The daughter will stand.
A father and daughter like that
God will bless!
At the first light, we will leave.
When the new dawn approaches, we will leave.
(Miller retires)
(The sound of the church organ can be heard
LUISA:
2:13 Ah! l'ultima preghiera
in questo caro suolo
dove felice trassi la vita!
E dove "T'amo" ei mi disse!
(Intanto ch'ella tutta immersa in tacita preghiera, un uomo avvolto in lungo mantello si fermato sulla porta, un famigliare lo segue)
Altrove domani pregher!LUISA:
Ah! The last prayer
On this beloved land
Where I led a happy life!
And where he said "I love you" to me!
(While she is completely absorbed in silent prayer, a man wrapped in a long cloak has stopped on the threshold, a servant follows him)
Tomorrow I will pray elsewhere!
Scene III
Rodolfo e Detta
Rodolo beve)
Amaro questo nappo.
LUISA:
Amaro?
RODOLFO:
Bevi.
(Luisa beve)
(Tutto compiuto!)
LUISA:
No . . .Scene III
Rodolfo and above
RODOLFO: (to the servant)
Return to the castle and let my father know that when the ceremony is ready
I await him here.
(The servant leaves)
She prays!
It certainly is time to pray!
(He draws from his breast an ampoule and tips the liquid into the cup. Luisa gets up and seeing Rodolfo before her starts. Rodolfo lays before her eyes the letter written to Wurm)
Have you written this letter?
Well? Did you write it?
LUISA:
Yes.
RODOLFO:
In my blood, in my mouth the terrible fire burns. A drink . . .
(Gestures towards the cup. Luisa hands it to him and Rodolfo drinks)
This goblet is bitter.
LUISA:
Bitter?
RODOLFO:
Drink
(Luisa drinks)
(Everything is finished!)
LUISA:
No . . .
RODOLFO:
Fuggir tu devi.
Altr'uomo t'attende per seguirti;
attende per seguirmi agli altari altra donna.
LUISA:
Che parli? Ah dunque! . . .
RODOLFO:
Invano attendon essi!
(Si strappa la sciarpa e la spada, e le getta lungi da s)
Addio spada su cui
difender l'innocente
e l'oppresso giurai!
LUISA:
O giusto ciel! Che hai?
RODOLFO:
Mi si chiude il respir!
LUISA:
Deh! qualche stilla ne suggi ancor . . .
ti fia ristoro . . .
(volendo nuovamente offirigli la tazza)
RODOLFO:
Ah! quel che m'offre par che sappia l'infame!
LUISA:
Rodolfo, e puoi scagliar s rea parola
contro la tua Luisa?
RODOLFO:
Ah! lungi, lungi quel volto lusinghier,
quel'occhi in cui splende
degli astri raggio pi vivo e terso.
Fattor dell'universo,
perch vestir d'angeliche sembianze
un'anima d'inferno?
LUISA:
E tacer deggio?
RODOLFO:
T'arretra . . .
In questi angosciosi momenti
pietade almen d'un infelice, ah! senti. RODOLFO:
You must flee.
Another man waits to follow you
Another lady waits to follow me to the altar.
LUISA:
What are you saying? Ah then
RODOLFO:
They will wait in vain!
(tears off his scarf and his sword and throws them far from him)
Farewell sword on which
I swore to defend
The innocent and the oppressed
LUISA:
O merciful Heaven! What is the matter?
RODOLFO:
My breathing is choked!
LUISA:
Alas! Drink a drop more . . .
It will restore you.
(wishing to offer him the cup again)
RODOLFO:
Ah! The vile girl seems to know what she offers me!
LUISA:
Rodolfo, how can you hurl such wicked words at your Luisa?
RODOLFO:
Ah! take far, far away that beguiling face
Those eyes in which shines a ray brighter and clearer than the stars.
Creator of the universe
Why clothe a soul from hell
With such an angelic appearance.
LUISA:
And must I be silent?
RODOLFO:
Stop! In these anguished moments
At least have pity on an unhappy man, ah listen.
LUISA:
Piangi, piangi; il tuo dolore
pi dell'ira giusto,
ahi quanto!
Piangi, piangi, o discenda
sul tuo core come balsamo quel pianto.
Ah! Se concesso al prego mio
d'alzarsi fino a Dio,
otterr che men funesto
de' tuoi mali sia l'orror.LUISA:
Weep, weep, your sorrow
Is more righteous than your anger, ah how much more.
Weep, weep, O may those tears descend
Like balm on your heart.
Ah! If it is granted that my prayer
Reach right up to God,
I will make the horrors of your ills
Less deadly.
RODOLFO:
Allo strazio ch'io sopporto
Dio mi lascia, in abbandono.
No, di calma, di conforto
queste lagrime non sono.
Son le stille, il gel che piomba
dalla volta d'una tomba!
Goccie son di vivo sangue
che morendo sparge il cor!
(L'oriuolo del castello batte le ore)
2:14 Donna, per noi terribile
ora squill suprema!
LUISA:
Rodolfo!
RODOLFO:
Nel mendacio che non ti colga,
oh, trema! Amasti Wurm?
LUISA:
Oh! calmati.
RODOLFO:
Guai, se mentisci! Guai!
Pria che questa lampada si spenga,
tu starai dinanzi a Dio!
LUISA:
Che! Spiegati . . . parla . . .
RODOLFO:
Con me bevesti la morte!
Al ciel rivolgiti, Luisa.
LUISA:
Tu dicesti la morte?
Ah! d'ogni vincolo sciolta per lei son io!
Il ver disvelo . . . apprendilo.
Moro innocente!RODOLFO:
God leaves me, abandoned,
To the torture which I bear.
No, these are not tears
Of calm, of comfort.
They are the drops, the ice which falls
From the vault of a tomb!
They are drops of living blood
Which the heart sheds when dying.
(The castle clock strikes the hour)
Woman, for us the terrible last hour
has struck!
LUISA:
Rodolfo!
RODOLFO:
Don't let it catch you in a lie
oh, fear! Did you love Wurm?
LUISA:
Oh! Calm yourself
RODOLFO:
Beware, if you are lying! Beware!
Before this lamp has gone out,
You will stand before God!
LUISA:
What! Explain yourself. Speak .
RODOLFO:
You drank death with me!
Turn to Heaven, Luisa.
LUISA:
You say death?
Ah! I am loosened by it from every bond! I reveal the truth. Learn it.
I die innocent!
RODOLFO:
O Dio!
LUISA:
Avean mio padre i barbari
avvinto fra ritorte
ed io . . .
RODOLFO:
Finisci.
LUISA:
Ahi, misera . . .
onde sottrarlo a morte . . .
come quel mostro . . . intendimi . . .
Wurm imponeva a me
il foglio scrissi.
RODOLFO:
O fulmine! Ed io t'uccisi!
LUISA:
Ahim!
RODOLFO
Ah! Maledetto, il d che nacqui,
il mio sangue, il padre mio!
Fui creato, avverso Iddio,
nel tremendo tuo furor.
LUISA
Per l'istante in cui ti piacqui,
per la morte che s'appressa,
d'oltraggiar l'Eterno, ah! cessa . . .
mi risparmia un tanto orror . . . RODOLFO:
O God
LUISA:
The cruel men had my father
Tied in chains
And I . . .
RODOLFO:
Finish.
LUISA:
Alas, unhappy girl
to take him from death. .
as that monster,...understand me..
Wurm made me
I wrote the letter.
RODOLFO:
O damnation! And I have killed you!
LUISA:
Alas!
RODOLFO
Ah! Accursed be the day that I was born
My blood, my father!
I was created, adverse God,
In your terrible fury.
LUISA
For the sake of the time when I pleased you, For the death which draws near,
Ah cease to offend the Eternal one
Spare me from so great a horror
Scene IV
Miller e Detti
MILLER:
Quai grida intesi?
Chi veggo? O cielo!
RODOLFO:
Chi? L'assassino, misero,
vedi del sangue tuo!
MILLER:
Che disse? Io gelo!
LUISA:
Padre!
MILLER:
Luisa!
RODOLFO:
Ma voglio a' pi colui svenarti . . .
LUISA:
Rodolfo . . . arresta . . .
gi mi serpeggia la morte in sen . . .
MILLER:
La morte! Ah! dite!
RODOLFO:
Scampo non resta! Un velen bevve!
MILLER:
Figlia! Un velen! Scene IV
Miller and above
MILLER:
What cries did I hear
Whom do I see? O Heavens!
RODOLFO:
Whom? You see the murderer, wretch,
Of your flesh and blood!
MILLER:
What did he say? I'm cold with fear!
LUISA:
Father!
MILLER:
Luisa!
RODOLFO:
But I want kill myself at his feet
LUISA:
Rodolfo . . . Stop . . .
Already death is snaking into my breast.
MILLER:
Death! Ah! Tell me!
RODOLFO:
There is no escape! She drank a poison!
MILLER:
Daughter! A poison.
LUISA:
2:15 Padre, ricevi l'estremo addio,
mi benedici, o padre mio.
La man, Rodolfo . . . sento mancarmi . . .
pi non ti scerno . . .
mi cinge un vel . . .
Ah! vieni meco, deh!
non lasciarmi,
insieme accogliere ne deve il ciel.
MILLER:
O figlia, o vita del cor paterno!
Ci separiamo dunque in eterno?
Di mia vecchiezza promesso incanto,
sogno tu fosti,
sogno crudel!
No, non pi mio quest'angel santo,
me lo rapisce invido il ciel!
RODOLFO:
Ah! tu perdona il fallo mio,
e perdonato sar da Dio,
ambo congiunge un sol destino,
me pure investe di morte il gelo.
S vengo teco, spirito divino,
insieme accogliere ne deve il ciel.
(Luisa muore)LUISA:
Father, receive my final farewell,
Bless me, O my father.
Your hand, Rodolfo, I feel faint . .
I can't discern you any more,
a veil surrounds me
Ah! Come with me, alas!
Don't leave me,
Together Heaven must receive us.
MILLER:
O my daughter, o life of a father's heart!
Are we to be parted then forever?
You were the enchanting promise
Of my old age, a dream you were,
a cruel dream!
No, This holy angel is no longer mine,
An envious Heaven steals her from me!
RODOLFO:
Ah! Forgive my sin,
And I will be forgiven by God,
Both bound to a common destiny,
I too am invaded by the chill of death
Yes, I go with you, divine spirit,
Together Heaven must receive us.
(Luisa dies)
Scene Ultima
Entrano i contadini
con Walter e Wurm
CONTADINI:
Profondi gemiti fra queste porte!
Che avvenne?
WALTER:
Spenta!
CONTADINI:
Dio di piet!
(Rodolfo scorge Wurm, ch' rimasto sulla soglia, afferra velocemente la spada, e lo trafigge)
RODOLFO:
