Why
§ The opportunity to "test drive" a career (Would I be happier in industry or university? Am I more comfortable working on a computer or in a lab?)
§ Chances to network
§ Establishing relationships with mentors
§ Possible college credit or certification
§ An introduction to the field's culture and etiquette (Are clients addressed by their first name? Are jeans appropriate?)
§ Accumulating new skills
§ Gaining a "real world" perspective on an occupation (How much overtime do employees really work? How much time is spent behind a desk versus in the field?)
What does a company gain?§ Pool of potential hire

IBM an history of internships
§ 1997-2010 Center on Polymer Interfaces and Macromolecular Assemblies (CPIMA), NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center. IBM only industrial firm to be a full partner. Brought 80 postdoctoral scientists and 100 summer researchers (including about 70 undergrads) to IBM Research.
§ 1993-2008 IBM partners with SJSU in academic/industrial grant for undergrad internships. $250k/year to SJSU brought 48 high school teachers and 260 undergrads from across the US to IBM Research for summer.
§ Participants in both programs had career day, graduate school workshop, poster sessions, and a CPIMA technical conference. Of the 300+ undergrads from both programs, 75% went on to graduate or professional schools.
§ APS internship program: since 2001
§ SJSU internship program since 1993
