WELCOME TO LSU
The Spirit of AcademicsAs the state’s flagship university, LSU means many things to many
people. And though during the course of your college career the
faculty to student ratio averages 21:1, you may encounter some large
classes early on. That’s just a fact.
But, here’s another lesser-known
fact; some classes at LSU are bigger,
because they are simply better.
Take Kerry Sauley’s Management 3200 class, Management Principles.
No, really, take it, it’s that good.
As a 3000-level class, one might think that it would be taught in
a smaller setting than the 1000-seat Bo Campbell Auditorium in
the state-of-the-art Cox Communications Building; but due to its
incredible popularity among students, no small classroom can hold
it. Plus, wouldn’t you rather laugh with a big group of classmates than
a small one?
You read that right…LAUGH.
The teaching style of Professor Sauley from the E. J. Ourso College
of Business has been referred to by students as “academic stand-up,”
a description he appreciates.
Bigger

“Sometimes I may use humor to
illustrate a point, or at other times
I may use it as a way to relax students
when difficult material is being
discussed. It makes the material more
memorable, it increases students’
readiness to learn the material, and
it makes learning more enjoyable.”
When Kerry Sauley began teaching at LSU, nearly thirty years ago,
word of his unconventional teaching style spread across campus
to business majors and non-business majors alike. So much so that
after a while no 20-seat classroom could meet the student demand
to enroll—and here at LSU, if there is one thing we take seriously,
it’s our students.
And if there is one thing Kerry Sauley takes seriously, it’s the business
of teaching management. He just does it in a seriously entertaining way.
If you are interested in taking Kerry
Sauley’s class as a management major,
LSU’s Rucks Department of Management
in the E. J. Ourso College of Business is
the place for you.
But, if business management isn’t your thing, you’re sure to find
an area of interest on the following pages where we list every major
available at LSU.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Academic Programs AbroadIf you think your LSU education is conducted solely within the
confines of the LSU campus, you’re mistaken. For that matter, if you
think your education is limited to what you can learn in the United
States you’re mistaken.
Academic Programs Abroad offers
students the opportunity to learn more
about other cultures while still working
toward the fulfillment of their degree
requirements.
You could take art classes in Ireland. Business classes in China.
Agriculture classes in Thailand. In all, LSU offers over 20 different
summer abroad options, giving students the opportunity to study
in places as far-flung as France, Morocco, and Tanzania.
If a single summer isn’t long enough, you can head overseas for
a semester or a full year thanks to partnerships with over 200
universities in over 40 countries. You must have a gpa of above 2.75,
be in good academic standing with the university, have completed
at least 30 credit hours, and have a satisfactory level of language
proficiency (if applicable) to be eligible.

Honors CollegeThe LSU Honors College is a four-year, residential college located
at the heart of LSU. Our “campus within a campus” is complete
with residence halls, the French House, and a live oak-filled outdoor
common area. The Honors College is the only residential college to
have a completely dedicated classroom building and residence hall
to foster continual learning in and out of the classroom.
The Honors College offers a curriculum
focusing on community service, study
abroad, undergraduate research, and
a senior thesis project. Our small
seminar classes bring together faculty
members from around campus to teach
a variety of topics. This multidisciplinary
approach allows Honors College
classes to fulfill multiple requirements
in all majors while creating a setting
where learning is enhanced by student
contribution and peer discussion.
Freshmen entering Louisiana State University are eligible to apply
to the Honors College if they meet the following recommended
admission criteria:
• Academic high school gpa: 3.50 (weighted by LSU) Recommended ACT: 30 composite with 30 English, or 29 composite with 31 English
OR
• Recommended SAT: 1330 critical reading + mathematics (combined) with 660 critical reading
• Completed SAT or ACT essay

In the Heart of LouisianaLSU is located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the state capital and home
to more than 766,000 people. In recent years, downtown Baton
Rouge—minutes from LSU—has transformed into a vibrant hot
spot where you can attend an art exhibition or a concert, or eat sushi
while you watch the sun set over the Mississippi River. Baton Rouge
attractions include the Louisiana Art and Science Museum; the Shaw
Center for the Arts; the Baton Rouge Zoo; and an array of festivals,
including international, book, film, animation, and blues.
LSU’s campus alone boasts scenic
lakes that are perfect for kayaking on
or jogging around, the Reilly Theatre
and the Shaver Theatre showing plays
and musical performances year-round,
no fewer than 15 places to grab a bite
to eat, 20 sports teams (19 of which
won’t even charge students a dime to
get in) and one Bengal/Siberian-mix
tiger named Mike VI.

The campus is bordered on its northern edge by Chimes Street,
where students enjoy live music almost every night in a multitude of
venues. Chimes Street is also home to popular coffee shop Highland
Coffees, Storyville—a t-shirt store owned by LSU alums—and the
Chimes,
a restaurant that is packed at all hours of the day with members of
the LSU community.
Easy road trips include New Orleans’ famous French Quarter (just 80
miles away) and Lafayette, the heart of Cajun country, closer still.
AthleticsLSU boasts 20 athletic teams and 46
national championships, including
three in football, six in baseball, and
an incredible 31 in track and field.
Our facilities are among the best in the nation, and include brand
new baseball and softball fields, as well as a legendary football
stadium that holds more than 92,000 people.
In addition to receiving football tickets at a discounted rate, our
students get in free to all other LSU home sporting events with their
student ID.

Residential LifeAt LSU, all of our residential options make a big campus feel more
intimate and friendly. Whether you choose to live in a Residential
College, a Freshman Interest Group (FIG), a traditional residence
hall, or the Honors House, you will enjoy the ease and solidarity that
comes with on-campus living.
Students applying for on-campus
housing must first be admitted to the
university and must apply for housing
separately. Once students have been
accepted by LSU, they may apply
online for on-campus housing.
Residential colleges maximize the on-campus living experience by
creating smaller communities and fostering greater student–faculty
interaction. In addition to living in the same hall, students in residential
colleges take several introductory classes together, and many of their
instructors hold office hours and review sessions in the residence hall.
Freshmen Interest Groups provide first-year students with a way
to make LSU feel smaller in this unique residential environment.
Small groups of residents live together and engage in linked courses,
develop and implement a student-designed community service
project, interact with faculty outside of the classroom, and participate
in several other activities in the designated theme of the FIG.

that are served in the two all-you-can-eat dining halls, and

Cost of AttendanceThe Cost of Attendance (COA) is the total amount it will cost you
to go to school—usually expressed in a yearly figure. Using rules
established by law, it is determined by tuition, fees, on-campus room
and board (or a housing and food allowance for off-campus students),
books, transportation, and miscellaneous expenses. The COA is
used for student aid purposes and is not necessarily the amount
a student will pay.
