Attend the VA Moose Association District 4 Quarterly Meeting on January 6th Another option our members can do on this date, is attend the Membership Meeting of VMA District 4 at 11:00am. The meeting will be at the Herndon Moose Lodge #2274 (located at 779 Center Street, Herndon, VA 20170). The Arlington Fraternity had won the attendance trophy at the last VMA District 4 Quarterly Meeting to start another run for another permanent trophy; however, as of the date of this publication, VMA District 4 has not provided a trophy to us to

display in our Lodge. Rumor is that they are still figuring out where to buy a new trophy.

Moose Legion Breakfast Sunday, January 7th (10:00am – 1:00pm) Start the New Year right by enjoying a “fulfilling” breakfast on a Sunday morning before you start getting all your files in order for the 2017 Federal Tax Return (Ha! Ha! Like you’re going to do anything before

April). AND … to make this 2018 event special, the Moose Legion Committee will be offering STEAK as an option in the breakfast. It’s an all-you-can-eat breakfast with made-to-order eggs (i.e.: any type including omelets), pancakes, French toasts, sausage, bacon, fruit salad, coffee, orange juice, and a minimum of one “surprise” food item. The cost will be $10.00/adult with 1 serving of steak or $8.00/adult for the normal monthly offering. If you decide to stay after the breakfast, watch the 2nd day of the NFL Wild Card Round at the Lodge.

Un-Oktoberfest - An Event Extravaganza Saturday, January 6th (2:00pm – 6:00pm) Unlike the rest of the world where everyone celebrates the Volksfest (People’s Fair) in the beginning of the Fall; the Arlington Fraternity prefers to be different by enjoying this German merriment in January. [Besides, it’s hard to come up with event themes in the cold winter months]. The food menu has not been set as of this publication; but some of the main items offered last year were bratwurst, sauerkraut, pork schnitzel, spaetzle (noodles), and German potato salad.

There will probably be a few non-German foods also being offered. This event will commence upon the shouting of "O'zapft is!" ("It's tapped!" in the Austro-Bavarian dialect), or as we say in our Lodge “Let’s Drink”.

Fish Fry Revisited – No. 11 (Since August 2012) Saturday, January 27th (2:00pm – 6:00pm) This event has always been a really big crowd-pleasing, successful event for the Lodge; with an average of 35 members and guests attending this similar event over the past several years. The Galley chefs packed their fishing gear at the end of summer; therefore, the fish selections will be found on ice at our local grocery store (actually, our chefs do not want to gut and clean the fish). We guarantee that the fish offerings of fried catfish, cod and flounder will be tasty and delicious! AND, as usual, there will be some special offerings being considered for later in the day. In keeping with the “menu that always brings the crowds back to the event”, several of the side dishes for this event will consist of macaroni & cheese, cooked mixed greens, stewed tomatoes, and baked beans.

Green Cap Celebration – December 2nd Honoring Roxanne Coles-Matis A glorious ceremony/celebration was provided to honor Roxanne Coles-Matis for achieving her Green Cap, which she received at the VMA 80th Annual State Convention in August 2017. Roxanne has been a member of the Arlington Chapter #1253 since July 2007, held the position of Junior Regent from May 2015 to April 2016, and held the

position of Senior Regent from May 2016 to April 2017. It is recognized that Roxanne has been a valuable asset in the continuing growth of the Arlington Fraternity. It was expressed in her speech that her achievement could not have been made without the efforts from all the members of Arlington Chapter #1253, the unconditional support of the LOOM Officers and its members, and the support of her husband. It is noted that “another” green cap style was bestowed on Roxanne at this ceremony. Immediately after the ceremony, there was a delicious buffet offered to all Moose members and guests within the Arlington Moose Lodge. Roxanne wants to thank Anna Phillips for preparing most of the main food offerings, all the other Arlington Fraternity members that contributed in the preparation/donation of the food for the event and to those that assisted in the cleanup.

Thank you Roxanne Coles-Matis for making the Arlington Fraternity the Greatest!

Pun of the Month Why can’t tennis players have a serious relationship? … LOVE means nothing to them!

Salute to Christmas - December 24th First, we want it to be known that no member came to the Lodge in a panic for assistance to assemble a gift. Which is a good thing, since our members do not follow instructions and probably would have produced more chaos than help! We missed a few “regulars” who always show up at the Lodge for a holiday “cheer”; however, everyone that did come to the Lodge had a good time.

The Arlington Fraternity wants to thank Joyce Chaffins for preparing the “sloppy joes” and to all those members that provided pot-luck dishes as a complementary food offering for this event.

National Indigenous Circle The Arlington Fraternity provided our Ritual Hall at no cost to the non-profit National Indigenous Circle for a Holiday Party on December 9th. The party hosted more than 100 children and their families for a holiday meal, gift giveaways, and games/contests.

The Lodge has also approved the use of our Ritual Hall to this organization for their monthly membership meeting if they desire.

The Fraternity Adopted 5 Families for Christmas

The Arlington Fraternity would like to thank everyone for being so generous in donating gifts to the children of the adopted families. This year we had three additional families and the Arlington Moose Lodge and Chapter members really stepped it up. A representative from Glen Forest Elementary School sent along sincere thanks from the three families that we adopted from the school. As for the families from Brighter Paths, some of our members had the joyous experience of delivering the presents directly to the families. To see the faces of the children was priceless. And to see the thanks on the faces of the parents was heartwarming. To know that our Fraternity was part of giving a few families in need a truly Merry

Christmas is what the true meaning of Christmas is all about. Thank you again and have a Happy New Year. The Arlington Fraternity would like to thank Brian Birtell and Elizabeth Coombs for being the organizers of this community service. In addition a thank you is extended to all the members that volunteered to shop for extra gifts/gift cards/food (from the collected money donations), wrapped gifts when needed, and made the deliveries to the Glen Forest Elementary School and to the adopted families associated with Brighter Paths.

2018 Moose Convention Registration and Housing Now Open The Moose are headed for the Big Easy! The 2018 International Moose Convention will take place from July 11-15 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Convention has not been in New Orleans since 1991, so a strong turnout of members is expected in 2018.

Registration and housing are now open at www.moose2018neworleans.org.

Endowment Collection The General Laws have been changed to require that the Nine O’clock Ceremony be conducted whenever members assemble in the Lodge (including the Social Quarters) … which is every day for our Lodge! Attendance within the Lodge is sparse during most evenings when an event is not offered; therefore, an endowment

donation box has been provided in the Non-Smoking Bar Area for our members to make a donation whenever they visit the Lodge. Please donate generously.

Redskins “Calling All Cooks” Sundays The thought of this program was to have members assist in enticing our membership to come to the Lodge when the Washington Redskins were playing their games on a Sunday afternoon by providing a food offering at a reasonable price (i.e.: volunteering to show their cooking talents with the

food items being paid by the Lodge). As you are aware, there were many games this football season where the Redskins did not play on a Sunday afternoon. Furthermore, it took several weeks at the start of the program before volunteers began to participate. But when the program “took off”, the food offerings were superb in October & November! Unfortunately, probably due to the personal burdens to accomplish needed activities for the end-of-year holidays or the fact that the odds for the Washington Redskins to make the playoffs was almost impossible at the end of November, the program had no volunteers that participated in the program during the month of December. What ever ... the Arlington Lodge wants to thank all those members that volunteered to participate in the Redskins “Calling All Cooks” program!

Celebrate the Holidays - December 16th This event did not meet our attendance expectations … so we will blame it on our members who procrastinated in their gift shopping for the holidays and needed to go to the stores. However, everyone that did attend found the chili offerings suburb; especially, since the Lodge decided to not charge a food fee in keeping with the holiday spirit.

The Lodge wants to thank Joyce Chaffins for preparing the standard meat and tomato sauce chili and to John Matis for preparing the Cincinnati chili, a white chicken/bean chili, and a vegetarian black bean chili. For the record, the Lodge offered the standard chili the next day to those members who watched the Washington Redskins beat the Arizona Cardinals (since no one volunteered for this date in the “Calling All Cooks” event). Unfortunately, in a good way, there was no leftovers of the other chili offerings.

Youth Awareness Program Even though the Arlington Fraternity had no students attended the Student Congress at our Lodge, we try to keep this worthwhile program in our mind and hearts throughout the year. It is not currently known how many students in Virginia are participating in the program at this time; however,

all should have already planned their presentations and will be providing their KidsTalks during this month and February (if they are like the Editor, they are procrastinators and will wait until the end of February – the deadline).

Governor’s Corner Welcome to 2018! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year celebrations with family and friends. My reflections on the past year has quite a story of

success. We continue every month with improvements to the lodge and its operations, increases in membership and volunteers, and more opportunities to continue these trends. As I look forward there continues to be many challenges and opportunity for improving what we have accomplished and what we could offer as improvements to our lodge. Please continue to reach out to me or any Board member with ideas, opportunities, and suggestions. Always remember this is your lodge we need your continued support and ideas to maintain continued growth, improvement of activities, and services for all our members and guests. Now that we have entered the winter season a reminder to be careful. Snow and ice can be and is dangerous. Try to prevent falls and overexertion, neither can end well. The lodge wants to see you as often as possible so please be careful. As always it is my great pleasure and honor to be serving as your Governor; I’m looking forward to seeing you soon!

The M(ooseheart) + M(oosehaven) Club

Dedicated donors provide a dependable monthly source of funding to help the children at Mooseheart Child City, the senior residents at Moosehaven retirement community, or the Endowment Fund’s recognition program – the Donors Circle.

When you choose to set up a monthly gift for as little as $10 (or more) per month, you can join the dedicated donors of the M+M club. Your monthly gift will be put to work in many ways:

Provide training for Family Teachers at Mooseheart;

Help senior residents at Moosehaven receive services;

Allow for healthy eating options for Mooseheart children;

… and many more. Monthly giving is a convenient and dependable way to provide for Mooseheart and/or Moosehaven. It can also help you reach your next level of giving to the Donors Circle.

You can enroll in the M+M club at the Moose Charities website.

Pie Day

January 23rd

Lodge Repairs/Replacements The holidays kept most of us busy in our personal lives, but some volunteers still offered their talents to address some important fix-its’ during the month of December. First, the lighting fixtures have been ignored over the past several months in the second entrance hall to

the Social Quarters and within the bar areas. Appropriate light bulbs were purchased, so Andre McFail, John Matis, and assistance from Marty Medel replaced many of the light bulbs within these areas. And while they had the ladder, Andre also cleaned the ventilation return air grilles within these areas (the last time they were cleaned is unknown & it was obvious). Second, from the continuous opening of the doors of the cabinet behind the bar in the Smoking Area, the doors had become loose at the hinges. We want to thank Billy Hensley for tightening the doors. We also had some “semi-emergencies” that needed to be addressed during the past month. The cooler housing the kegs in the Smoking Bar Area would not maintain an acceptable temperature for the draft beer (WHAT!). Mike Foster came to the rescue and cleaned the exhaust filter area of the cooler (again when was the last time it was cleaned?). It was also noticed that the ice cube maker in the kitchen was making a horrible noise. Ralph Phillips came to the rescue and cleaned the air intake filter to allow the proper air flow. For preventive maintenance of the coolers within the bar areas, as several of these items were collecting water in the interior compartments or freezing stored beverages, the thermostats of these coolers were checked/replaced by an outside contractor. Probably the main repair for the Lodge in December was the replacement of the hot water cleaning sprayer fixture near the dishwasher sterilizer in the kitchen. Over many months, it has been noticed that the sprayer fixture was dripping more and more to a point that the water was a steady stream (i.e.: lots of money “down the drain”). We want to thank Alex Wantrobski for finding and installing a new replacement. The water has stopped dripping! It is reminded that the Lodge now has a Facilities Committee and if you see something that needs to be cleaned/repaired, please discuss with Andre McFail (Chairman) and Brian Birtell (member of the Committee).

Who would have thought? The Active Military/First Responders Promotion Extended through April 30th! (“First Year Dues Free”) (from Official Communication of Moose International)

The Supreme Council has approved the extension of the “First Responder” membership initiative through the end of the Moose Year. This is a

PERFECT opportunity to sign a new member, as it is not anticipated that this incentive will be continued in the future. These individuals bring three things to the Moose that are desperately needed: a shared commitment to serving others; a youthful, energetic viewpoint that can reinvigorate our fraternal units; and the potential to step into leadership positions within our lodges, chapters and Moose Legions. The Moose cannot have enough members who recognize the benefits of giving to others and supporting causes purely because it’s the right thing to do.

What better way to get someone to join our Lodge than to have their application fee and their first year’s dues waived!

Let’s Talk (A Message from the Administrator)

As the Administrator, I want to let our members know that the end of 2017 was good to the Lodge as we finally increased our funds in the bank; in lieu of staying “flat-lined” (i.e.: “staying even”) like the first three quarters of the year. This year we did not have a major repair for the Lodge (please no jinx - “knock on wood”) which

definitely helped and we received great support for our members in volunteering to make necessary repairs. Furthermore, the Moose Legion Committee made some contributions to provide new facilities/replacements (at no expense to the Lodge) and we seemed to increase the number of Ritual Hall rentals in comparison to previously years. Last but not least, the electronic gaming (Powerhouse Gaming) contributed a nice income. Thank you members of the Arlington Fraternity for volunteering to keep the Lodge operational and assisting in our community service activities, attending social events, and welcoming everyone who enters our Lodge (fellow members, guests, and out-of-town Moose visitors). As Billy Hensley always says … our members ROCK!

Pet Photos with Santa – December 17th We had a great time with Pet Photos with Santa! The event was held in the Ritual Hall and had a backdrop Christmas tree to complement the setting with Santa. A thank you is expressed to all the members who participated and provided donations to the pets at Moosehaven at this special fundraiser. A total of $130.00 was donated for the photographs taken of the pets. A special thanks to “Moose”, our mascot with Patti and

Nora Rodas. Judith York and Donna Heflin made the event really fun! Of course, we must thank Santa! Tommy Oderwald and Liz Coombs did a wonderful job getting Santa to attend the event

Children’s Christmas Party - December 16th The program changed a little this year as we had a breakfast, instead of lunch, for the children and their families, as Santa had to be at the North Pole in the afternoon (you know he is a very busy man during December). The early hour event start on a Saturday did not deter the children from coming to see the “jolly man in the red suit”; as there

were over 45 children that registered to come to this event … AND most came with many family members. The breakfast offering was regular pancakes, pancakes with chocolate chips, scrambled eggs, and lots & lots of bacon (we could not meet the demands to keep the bacon in the tray). While the children and families were eating their breakfast Santa roamed the event meeting the children; but he then left for a short time to make sure his reindeers were being fed … he had to ensure his ride home had the nourishment/energy (for the record: there are no known Uber drivers that would take him back to the North Pole from our Lodge). The first activity for the children after breakfast was making Christmas trees with ice cream sugar cones, icing, and various candies. Then Santa came back and gave each of the children in attendance an early gift for Christmas; after each child privately told him what they wanted for Christmas … but he never promised anything! As the finale for the event, the children were read of the storybook T’was the Night before Christmas. Arlington Fraternity would like to thank all our members who contributed in accomplishing this successful event for the children; which included organizing & planning the event, providing monetary and gift donations, making the arrangements for Santa to attend the event, helping Santa’s elves that shopped and wrapped the presents, decorating and setting up the furniture for the event, cooking for the event, participating in the event, performing the clean-up after the event, and volunteering to perform anything else that was needed. All volunteers need to “pat yourself on your back”; you are the greatest in supporting the family and community ideals of our fraternity. The Editor apologizes for not citing specific names of the volunteers that participated for the event; but he was told that this was a Moose “FAMILY” effort. The Editor apologizes that there are no pictures from this event at this time … as technical difficulties were experienced. We will place the pictures on the Arlington Lodge website once our computer gurus resolve the problem.

The Arlington Moose Legion Committee Corner The Moose Legion Committee wants to thank all our Legionnaires and guests who brought a pot-luck dish to the Holiday Meeting in December. It was a very short meeting … so we could enjoy the delicious food offerings.

Thanks to the new Bull Run Legion #185 Membership Campaign, we enrolled three Moose members for the Moose Legion in the month of December. Thank you Dan Harris, Steve Sisson, and Dean Massey for taking the next step in the Moose organization. We expect to have four enrollees to be conferred at the Bull Run Moose Legion #185 Winter Celebration.

The Arlington Moose Legion Committee is planning to have a “Sock Hop” on Saturday, March 10, 2018 in the late afternoon. More information will be provided to the membership in February.

Thank you to all our Arlington Fraternity members who have participated in the fundraiser food raffles in the past several months. Your contributions are assisting to rebuild our funds to support the Lodge.
