The Lower Zambezi is the 250 km section of Zambezi River which flows downstream from below Kariba Dam Wall creating the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The river transects through 2 national parks (Lower Zambezi National park and Mana Pools National Park) and then flows into Cahora Bassa Dam in Mozambique. The Lower Zambezi River is in-fringed by the beautiful rift valley escarpment which is a sanctuary for wildlife on both the Zambian and Zimbabwe sides. There are approximately 50 species of mammal, over 400 species of bird and roughly 75 different species of fish located in the river and parks. It is not uncommon to see elusive Leopard lazing in the trees, elephants quenching there thirsts or the rare Pel’s fishing owl roosting in the riverine trees.

You will enjoy 5 nights hosted by Navigate Africa Safaris at our favorited fishing venue located just below the Mapata Gorge. Fishing will be predominantly exercised inside the Lower Zambezi National park and in the Mapata Gorge.

The area is known to deliver exciting tigerfishing for spin, fly and conventional anglers, there are quite a few species of fish which can be lured which include; Tigerfish, Vundu, Chessa, Nkupi, Bottlenose, Cornish jack and a variety of bream species.

Fishing in the mpata is very exciting, the water is quite fast as it is forced through a narrow and deep gorge, the river opens up on either side of the gorge. There are very few fishing camps located in this area keeping it very exclusive. Prime fishing season is September and October, this is when the river is low, clear and fast and Tigerfish start to run. There is very little netting in the National Park due to Zambian Wildlife controls and the difficulty for netters to net in the gorge itself.

The game viewing in the area is very good on both Zambian and Zimbabwean sides of the river. Some of the wildlife you can expect to encounter includes elephants, leopard, vervet monkeys, baboons, waterbuck, kudu, klipspringer (in the gorge), impala, crocodiles, hippo’s and many others. Birding is excellent with a variety of birds including Black coucal, Schalow’s turaco, Pel’s fishing owl, Lilians Love bird’s to name a few.
