His presence redefi ned a somewhat dowdy country in the eyes of the world, leaving us with a collective anxiety about whether we quite measured up. Brooke Johnson has captured this strange ambivalence in a beautiful one-woman show about her friendship with the just-retired PM when she was only 23. Co-presented with Ruby Slippers Theatre.

Damien ~ Nov 16 - 28A heart-wrenching story of love and compassion about Father Damien de Veuster who lived among the lepers on Molokai Island. The playconfronts his challenges of self doubt and undying compassion towards what he originally describes as a dumping place for human beings.

Visiting Mr. Green ~ Feb 10 - 27, 2011 86 year old widower Mr. Green is almost hit by a car driven by young corporate executive Ross Gardiner. Found guilty of reckless driving, Ross is ordered to spend the next six months making weekly visits to Mr. Green. What starts off as a comedy about two people who resent being in the same room together develops into a gripping and poignant drama, as family secrets are revealed and old wounds are opened. Speed-the-Plow ~ March 3 - 19, 2011David Mamet’s hilarious cautionary tale set in the high-stakes world of Hollywood fi lm pro-duction. An accelerating roller coaster ride of tension is put in motion as wannabe producer Charlie Fox brings a potential blockbuster movie to his old friend and newly-made Head of Production, Bobby Gould. Time is of the essence, as the deal must be locked-down or lost. Neither of them realizes the key role that will be played by young temp Karen, who gets a taste of power and the opportunity to wield it. The play is a nail-biter right down to the gripping conclusion and nothing is quite as it seems.

The Lower Lonsdale area is physically redesigning itself with the newly constructed “Pier” development at Lonsdale &Esplanade, public areas between the Pinnacle Hotel and the waterfront, construction of a 5-storey retail-residential building on Chester eld near West Esplanade, and early planning for majorredevelopment of areas including the foot of Lonsdale andadjacent properties.

The Lower Lonsdale Business Association is very proud to be a big part in encouraging development in Lower Lonsdale which will include many public amenities which, with other work LLBA isdoing, helps to create a wonderful family-friendly waterfrontresidential and business community.

We’re particularly proud that the LLBA has accomplished so much with a very modest $5,000 annual operating budget and a handful of very active volunteers. We now raise over $100,000 per year in funding for our 3 free public festivals: The Party-at-the-Pier, the Fall Festival, and the Christmas Festival of Lights. These festivals draw many thousands of people to Lower Lonsdale so that they can see how it’s developing into the gem of the North Shore, and for them to shop Lower Lonsdale businesses. Seventy percent of that funding is raised from private companies outside the Lower Lonsdale area.

We are working toward becoming a Business Improvement Area in 2011 so that we can do even more for our community.

t’s Friday night. It’s been a long week at work and the last thing you want to do is get back in the car and head down-

town for something to eat. There’s traf c and roadblocks and nightmare parking. But, until recently, with only a handful of decent restaurants on the North Shore, dining-out options were severely limited. But lately there’s been a buzz building about a slew of great new restaurants popping-up in the Lower Lonsdale area. There’s talk of a Greek place, an Italian joint, a sh restaurant, a place for Carib-bean tapas and even a cozy bistro that specializes in comfort food. They offer great food at reasonable prices in relaxed yet bustling environments, and even better, they’re just around the corner, tucked neatly beside one another in a row next to the water. “The North Shore customers are well educated. They want great food, a com-fortable environment and they want to have fun. All the new restaurants in Lower Lonsdale are very diverse and I think they just help make the area even funkier,” said Justin Joyce, owner of burgoo. Shallaw Kadir, the owner and chef at the year-old Fishworks a few doors up, has

also had success with local diners who are looking for a lot less fuss. Specializing in Ocean Wise dishes, Kadir caters to the conscious seafood diner who appreciates culinary value in a stylish yet laid-back set-ting. “I live in Lower Lonsdale and I wanted to open a seafood restaurant in North Van-couver because there was nowhere to go that offered quality seafood in the area. We have had success from day one and have lots of regulars, as well as, people taking the SeaBus from over town,” said Kadir. This simple yet successful concept is something that Nancy Campos, the man-ager at Anatoli, has known for sometime. This year the North Shore favourite is celebrating 28 years in the restaurant busi-ness, an impressive feat for a sometimes- ckle market. “Over all these years our reputation has grown to speak for itself. We have local customers that have been coming for years and those that come from over town for great Greek food in a casual atmosphere. “The new restaurants haven’t detracted from our business at all. I would say that they drive more traf c to the area. And hopefully with more development more people will come to Lower Lonsdale and

spend some time shopping, eating and look-ing around,” said Campos. And with plans for more restaurants, shops and cultural attractions in the newly reno-vated Shipyard on the horizon, in addition to changes to Waterfront Park, Lonsdale Quay Market and hotels, Lower Lonsdale shows no signs of slowing down. And while some concerns have been raised over parking restrictions, limited public transit and ease of access from the sea walk, businesses and residents alike are putting their heads together to nd solutions that work for everyone. “There’s a real sense of community in the area. We get great support from the local residents and also from the surrounding businesses. The Quay and Pinnacle Hotel send their guests over to dine with us and the neighbouring restaurants help each other out,” said Joyce. Kadir couldn’t agree more. “If someone is looking for Greek I will send them to Anatoli or if they want Caribbean I will tell them to go to Raglan’s Bistro. Everyone wants every-one else to do well.” So, leave the car in the garage and head to Lower Lonsdale. You’re bound to nd something for every craving.

Make sure to also check out The District and Gusto di Quattro, both right on Lons-dale. The surrounding streets are also well worth the short walk. Le Bistro Chez Michele is just around the corner on Esplanade and the Quay has several great restaurants. ower Lonsdale’s art scene may best be described as “inter-

active.” At the Presentation House Gallery, a high school art class is discuss-ing this month’s Flakey exhibit featuring the early works of Glenn Lewis. At the CityScape Community Art Space, the works of ve North Shore female artists are prominently featured on

the crisp white walls. And down the street at the Café for Contemporary Art, art lovers and coffee drink-ers are chatting about the current Industrial Design display. “Lower Lonsdale is a close-knit commu-nity where everyone helps everyone else out. When I started showing local art-ists, the word spread and now I have no shortage of

work to display,” said Elliot Maclean, owner of Lower Lonsdale’s Bilton’s Art Centre. Jo Dunlop, exhibition coordinator at CityScape Community Art Space, also credits community support for the vibrant local art scene. With 450-plus mem-bers and growing, there’s never a shortage of exhibit proposals from emerging and established artists.

“I feel that the local art community is growing and that is largely in part to the interactive community com-ponent. We work to bring artists and the community together by creating activi-ties that include people of all ages and backgrounds.” This month four of the ve artists featured in the 5 Senses and Sensibilities exhibit are putting their educator backgrounds to

good use by hosting a chil-dren’s painting workshop. Last month, art enthusiasts walked and sketched their way through North Vancou-ver gardens. Curator Adrian Boston has also capitalized on the opportunity to share his exhibit with an enthusiastic North Shore community. Port Captain Don Westmoreland’s day typically starts around 6:30 a.m. when he arrives at the Cates Tugs of ce at

the foot of Lonsdale.

The daily IRR report, which lists the previ-ous night’s boating incidents, will tell him how his day will unfold. There will be meetings, and appointments with training committees and updates with crews and captains, as well as visits to barge sites and docks.

By now it’s all second nature to the port captain who left the open seas in 2004 to come ashore after forty years.

“I still enjoy getting out on the water, but I wanted a change, a new challenge. Now I am one of four port captains who oversee a group of tugs. Instead of being responsible for the day-to-day safety of a single crew and vessel, I look after 14 tugs.”

those incidents. I also oversee docking in the West Shore terminals and conventional op-erations in the Vancouver harbour and Fraser River,” said Westmoreland.

It’s been a long road to port captain since Westmoreland started as a deckhand on his rst tug in 1970. He worked his way through the ranks earning his stripes as mate before becoming a captain in 1976. Twelve years later he joined Cates Tugs.

Of course this was long before Dennis Washington acquired Cates in 1992 or Seaspan in 1996. In 2000, West-moreland was on deck when all the marine companies joined under one umbrella to become the now-famil-iar Washington Marine Group.

“There were some growing pains when the companies merged together. But the Washing-tons have put a lot of money into the company and you can see that they are here for the long haul. I think they are a great company to work for,” said Westmoreland.

As port captain there are also plenty of op-portunities for Westmoreland to get involved with some of the larger and more expensive Washington projects. One example includes a trip to Istanbul, Turkey this month for sea trials with several new tugboats.

Previously, he enjoyed trips to Los Angeles and New Orleans where he escorted tankers and learned about simulator training. He also participated in live trials in the Gulf of Georgia where he loaded tankers and learned how to determine the accuracy of a simulator.

“I really enjoy working with the highly-skilled crews, travelling to these different locations and getting involved with the studies.”

“We worked on a tugboat in Tacoma that was worth 17 million dollars and had 6,000

horsepower. The tugs are bigger, more power-ful and more sophisticated because they haveto do more than ever before. Working on themis always interesting,” said Westmoreland.

Certainly it’s busy being a port captain, butit’s comforting to know that at the end of a longweek of high seas and weary travels all CatesTugs employees receive one-and-a-quarterdays off for every day worked. That means ev-eryone from deckhands to captains only haveto clock-in 135 days a year.

For those who think that kind of schedulingsounds pretty great, consider the dedication ittakes to have a career on the high seas. Includ-ing BCIT training, it takes ve to six years as adeckhand, a year’s more schooling to becomemate, followed by some serious work experi-ence before you can event take your MastersTicket to become captain.

During their careers most Cates Tugs em-ployees will generally gravitate towards work-ing on either the outside tugs, which travel inopen waters, inside water towing tugs or shifttugs. Understandably the most valuable em-ployees are trained in all three areas.

But with roughly 40 tugs and 200 barges inthe Cates family and growing, there is moreopportunity than ever to work on ship dock-ing tugs, ocean faring tugs and coastal tugs indeckhand, mate, captain and cook positions.

And Westmoreland will tell you, as long asyou’ve got your sea legs, it’s a ne career, withgreat people and great opportunities. He’sbeen at it for more than 40 years and showsno signs of slowing down.

Lower Lonsdale talksas the neighbourhood changes

a second look

Since the City of North Vancouver embarked on its ambitious plan to re-develop Lower Lonsdale more than a decade ago a lot has changed. Just take a look around: new residential towers, a new community centre and hotel, plus lots of cool new restaurants, cafes and shops. And as developmentcontinues, more change is coming. So, we asked some locals how they imagine Lower Lonsdale in the future.

Oliver Heimann and his faithful Retriever Finn, on their daily walk.

Oliver Heimann and his dog Finn had just nished meeting friends for coffee and were taking a walk down the Pier.

Finn was chasing a few seagulls that had landed on the walkway and had to be put back on his leash for misbehaving.

“He just loves to chase the birds. It’s kind of funny to watch them because they land again and start coming towards him. I think they are taunting him,” said Oliver.

It’s a daily occurrence walking the three-year-old yellow Labra-dor Retriever with boundless en-ergy and Oliver is always on the lookout for dog-friendly areas.

“I take him for hikes in the morn-ing on the Baden Powell trail, but it would be great to be able to walk him on the Lower Lonsdale seawall. It is so nice down here on a sunny day and this tends to be a very dog-friendly area. So, I would like to see them build a long walkway along the water for people and canines alike,” said Oliver.

And with that Finn bites the leash and it is time to go. Oliver heads off with a cof-fee cup in one hand and a leash in the other, Finn’s yellow tail wagging.

Janis Hummel and her good friend Ruth Goodmurphy are catching-up on the outskirts of the Lonsdale Quay Market with a hot cup of tea.

They have both lived on the North Shore for over 40 years and have lots to say about the development of the Lower Lon-sdale area.

“I think rst-off I would like to see the developers try to maintain as much green space as possible, as well as, the view,” said Ruth.

Janis agreed it was a disap-pointment that so many of the new buildings in the LoLo area were high-rises and consequently ob-structed the views of Burrard Inlet and Vancouver.

“And rather than more of a com-mercial area, I would like to see the area surround-ing the new Ship-yard site become more of a cultural attraction,” said Janis.

“Perhaps an area for outdoor con-certs and cultural

events with seat-ing. It would also be nice to have an artists walk, like the one they have in Stanley Park, where people can display their work,” said Janis.

Ruth agreed and added that while the National Mari-time Centre was no longer a pos-sibility, a historic sight would be a nice addition to the area, a token of the early LoLo days.

Richard and Doreen Blackburn check out the new Shipyard site.

For 50 years Richard and Doreen Blackburn have lived on the North Shore. Four years ago they made the move to Lower Lonsdale and have been keep-ing up on development ever since. They enjoy taking strolls around the Lonsdale Quay Market, where they are frequent shoppers and checking-in on the progress around the new Shipyard site.

“I sure wish they would make the location look more homey. It all seems so industrial,” said Doreen.

“I would like to see them expand the market to make it more of a one-stop-shop where you could get everything you needed,” said Richard.

They both agreed that the new Lower Lonsdale development has a long way to go, but were impressed with the updates to the Lonsdale Quay Hotel.

“We had some friends who were visiting stay at the hotel and they just loved it,” said Doreen.

So, while the Blackburn’s are not completely smitten with the new design of the Lower Lonsdale site, they are pleased with the updates to pre-existing ame-nities. Perhaps, a meeting of modern facilities with some old-school-charm could be just what LoLo is missing.

with lattes and breakfasts all

day long.

In the southeast corner of the Lons-dale Quay Market, coffee drinkers are sitting with friends around cozy wooden tables, reading the news-paper and taking in the view.

They are huddled around the All Day Café, which for over two decades has been serving-up fresh coffee, breakfast, sand-wiches and other baked goodies to locals and tourists alike.

The café, like many of the marketbusinesses, is family-owned andoperated. Today

Nicole Tschumi is at the helm steam-ing milk and froth-ing cappuccinos while her mother Regina takes the day off.

“It’s great work-ing in the market because it is a real community. I wouldn’t want to see it expand or change because I think it would take away from its fam-ily feel.”

“I would like to see more devel-opment towards the Shipyard site, more retail and restaurants and a seawall connecting the market to the site. The market

is the real hub of the area. It’s why people come to the quay. Making Lower Lonsdale more of a destina-tion would bring even more people over to visit,” said Nicole.

And with that the queue has picked up again and the orders for extra-hot double-shot lattes come streaming in. It’s another busy day at the market with familiar faces and familiar orders.

Rod Amunsen takes time amidst his paper-work to remember the old neighbourhood and suggests a gallery would let visitors to get a feel for thecommunity.

Rod Amunsen grew up on the North Shore. In fact, he has lived, worked and enjoyed the Lonsdale area since the 1960s.

“It is so different than it used to be when I lived here in the early days.”

“It used to have a small com-munity feeling. It was quieter and simpler then. I remember there was even a barn on 29th street and Lonsdale with elds and horses. Today there are so many new people in the area and there is too much development,” said Rod.

Had it been up to him, Rod would have just left the LoLo area as it was. He’s not interest-ed in more restaurants, or shop-ping boutiques. He would much

rather sit outside on a fall day and get some paper work done while looking out on the view.

But, in the wake of the develop-ment plans for Lower Lonsdale, Rod isn’t going to make a fuss. He’s seen plenty of changes in his years on the shore.

“I thought it was ne just the way it was, but if they are going to make changes, they should take the Presentation House Gallery and move it down to the new Shipyard site. It would be nice for people to get a feel for the North Shore commu-nity,” said Rod.

This month they are nally moving home and they

couldn’t be more excited. There’s an IGA, lots of restaurants and wonderful programs at the John Braithwaite Community Centre and North Shore Neighbour-hood House. We can’t wait to be back on the North Shore.”

s the commercial focus and transportation hub of North Vancouver,

Lower Lonsdale has the potential to be a truly vibrant waterfront community.

However, despite the roughly 14 thousand residents living in the area, the foot of LoLo has been vastly underuti-lized.

Since the inception of the Versatile Shipyard Land Use plan 13 years ago, which aimed to redevelop the shipbuilding site, there have been vast improvements to the local area. But, there is still a long way to go.

There were high hopes of a National Maritime Centre for the Paci c and the Arctic being built adjacent

to Shipbuilder’s Square, but when provincial funding fell through, the City of North Vancouver had to put their thinking caps on for an area that had already been zoned for retail or public attrac-tions.

On Oct. 6 the city, in part-nership with Washington Marine Group, held a Foot of Lonsdale planning Study in the Lonsdale Quay Hotel to open up discussion about the opportunities and chal-lenges that lay ahead for the Lower Lonsdale area.

“There was a lot of con-sistency in the feedback we were getting during the visioning session, said Larry Orr, the city’s waterfront project manager.

“Fifty per cent of the site, which is east of the parking deck, needs to be replaced. We want to create an area where people can see the water, a public gathering space where people can sit quietly and maybe build a water feature of some kind.”

“In the west section, the thinking is towards creating a small retail section with outdoor seating, like a sh and chip shop. We want to improve access from the shipyard to the new shipyard site and make the walkway more accessible for people.”

There have also been sug-gestions put forth by the Washington Marine Group to expand the docking area to make way for large ships.

With limited docking area along the city waterfront, they suggest that Lower Lonsdale could be an ideal location to moor big boats.

In addition, there have been talks to develop the area, which is currently home to the Waterfront Project Of ce, and plans to build three more residential tow-ers on the eastern side of the Pier.

“We are looking at a Gran-ville Island style-model for Lower Lonsdale with more retail space. We are also considering the feasibility of a media arts gallery. We would like to nd a new location for the Presenta-tion House Gallery and are thinking about what that might look like,” said Orr.

What’s not certain is the timeline for development for the three potential residen-tial towers. That, according to Orr, will be determined by Pinnacle Int, the develop-ment company responsible for design and construction.

As for the western portion of the waterfront develop-ment, where the National Maritime Centre was origi-nally slated, the Vancouver real estate developer PCI Group is also in the prelimi-nary design stage.

They will present their ideas to city council next month for review and decisions will be made from that point on in regards to a partnership with the developer.

“What we are certain of is that we don’t want to build any large buildings which would obstruct the water and city views. What we want to create is a destina-

tion. A location with some kind of cultural attraction where people can shop and enjoy some entertainment,” said Orr.

And there appears to be no shortage of attraction or entertainment ideas from lo-cal residents and business owners.

“I would love to see them build a oating outdoor swimming pool, that we could use all year round. That would be awesome,” said Rebecca Salit, who works at the Lonsdale Quay Market.

“I think a dine-in movie theatre like McMenamins in Oregon would be great.

Where you can have a meal and watch a movie on a big screen while sitting on an-tique couches,” said Emma Seddon, a North Vancouver resident.

And while everyone has an opinion, some, if not many of them are not nancially or logistically feasible for the Lower Lonsdale area. A project of this nature takes time and planning and while some grow frustrated with the delayed development, the end result will hopefully be well worth the wait.
