C O M P A N Y P R O F I L EAberdare Cables, a member of the Powertech Group, is a leading African manufacturer ofcables with five manufacturing sites, in three provinces of South Africa, and offshoreoperations in Mozambique, Portugal and Spain. The company's customer base includespower supply authorities, railway and transport organisations, municipalities, andcompanies in industries such as petrochemical, mining, wholesale, industrial, constructionand domestic building. The company manufactures and sells a wide range of state of the artproducts with customer specific adaptation, design capabilities and full technical back-upservice. Aberdare Cables prides itself on its ability to identify and satisfy customer needsthrough development of innovative products; unique, cost effective cable solutions for a widerange of industries. This and their extensive project experience make them the supplier ofchoice for cable, related accessories and special cable projects.

Aberdare Cables pursues ongoing technology development programmes, and throughactive association with its local and overseas affiliates, continues to remain at the forefront oftechnology. The company has been recognised internationally as a pioneer in cableadvancements. Aberdare serves on a number of SABS and International ElectrotechnicalCommission (IEC) cable working groups. As much as ten years ago, in a move towardsfacilitating the provision of electricity for all countrywide,Aberdare Cables designed productswith an emphasis on cost efficiency of electrification. To this end, Aberdare created itsElectrodac range, which is aimed specifically at facilitating rural electrification by lowering thecost of electricity delivery. More recently, in accordance with Siemens specifications,Aberdare produced an unarmoured cable, with stringent fire characteristics, that wasdesigned to reduce the propagation of fire by cables. This cable is used at Eskom's open-cyclegas turbine generators at Mossel Bay and Atlantis. To cater for international markets,Aberdare introduced fire survival cable with stringent properties that allow continuousoperation and circuit integrity for extended periods during a fire.

Aberdare Cables is a fore runner in the industry with regard to quality. The manufacturing, quality assurance, testing and research resources of Aberdare are of a world-class standard. In fact, the company was one of the first companies in South Africa to be awarded the SouthAfrican Bureau of Standards (SABS) Quality Assurance Certification, and has been ISO 9001compliant for many years.Aberdare Cables is UL listed and has Basec QA accreditation.

Aberdare Cables has embraced the empowerment concept.Today Aberdare enjoys a strongand active relationship with Izingwe Consortium, their empowerment partner. AberdareCables employs a strategic focus on skills development and employment equity. Thecompany has always been an active supporter and pillar of strength for the communities inwhich it operates, championing a number of social investment initiatives across our country. The company has also assisted in the development of a number of black enterprises and willcontinue to drive such initiatives.

As a proudly South African company, Aberdare participated actively in the development ofthe ICT charter and the draft DTI BBBEE codes. Aberdare will continue to adopt a proactiveapproach to effect the transformation that the codes specify and to lead the cable industry inthis regard.

ABERDARE CABLES

SLIPDAC

SLIPDAC

has established

a procedure for testing of the pulling

force required to pull a sample of cable

through a preformed length of standard

20mm SABS conduit. The initial force

required to move the cable was

measured and recorded for a number

of samples of different sizes in the

house wire range of colours, for both

standard products as well as for

See attached photograph of the

rig used during testing. (The

conduit was exchanged for an unused

piece from the same batch, at regular

intervals).

What are the benefits of this product solution compared to standard housewire?

• The pulling force required to pull the product throughconduit, is significantly reduced, as the cable-to-conduitand cable to cable friction is lower than on the standardproduct.

• The product is neatly and accurately coiled on automaticcoilers, which reduces the risk of entanglement.

• The coils are sized for placement in a standardbucket where they may be stored securely

after use. Refer PHOTO 3.

• The heat-shrunk plastic used in the packaging, keeps the

coil in a sturdy, compact form until such time as it is used, thus there is a reduced risk of entanglement due to poorhandling.

• The perforated packaging allows for easy access to the wireend on the inside of the coil, without having to disturb thepackaging or the body of the coil during use. Refer PHOTO 1.

• The packaging is perforated on both the top and bottom, thusallowing coils to be stacked for simultaneous extraction of allrequired colours. A useful tool for this purpose is a bucket, which will hold the stacked coils in place while the wire isbeing withdrawn. Refer PHOTO 2.

Properties

3 circular stranded plain soft copper conductors, XLPE insulated, layed up with one circular stranded tinned soft copper earthingconductor, collectively screened with an aluminium polyethylene laminate (APL) tape, polyethylene sheathed undergroundsupply cable.

Use of intermediate Voltage allows increased power transfer over long distances with smaller conductor sizes, eg for loadstypically 25 kVA this represents a considerable saving when compared to conventional systems. This cable is therefore intendedfor supplying such loads over distances where using 11kV would provide a more reliable but far more expensive solution.

• Underground cable - with a specially adapted tractor, the cable can be buried with minimum labour, and therefore more costeffective.

• Screened cable construction for ease of fault location.• Buried cable results in a "clean" landscape - no poles or overhead lines to hinder farm vehicles.

Circular stranded hard drawn copper phase conductor, XLPE insulated with concentrically arranged identified neutral and bareearth conductors. Polyethylene sheathed 600/1000V service connection cable. Nylon ripcord laid under sheath. Manufactured toSANS 1507 -6.

• Small overall diameter - concentric construction (SNE - Seperate Neutral Earth).• Lower mass - due to smaller diameter - no steel wire armour.• Increased safety - reliable earthing.• Improved reliability - UV stable sheath and core insulation and water blocked.• Tamper and vandal proof - unauthorised access to phase conductor inhibited by concentric layer.• Easy strip with nylon ripcord.

FLAMOSAFE RANGE OF FIRE PERFORMANCE OF ELECTRIC CABLES

NHLSFR (Non Halogen) White

Stripe cables

(LOTOX )

are designed to reduceflame propagation and smoke inthose instances where a fire maydevelop. By replacing the standardPVC with XLPE insulation and EVAbedding and outer sheath, no HCIgases will be liberated during theburning of the cables. ®

LHFR (Low Halogen) Blue Stripe

cables

(LOHAL )

has specially formulated PVCthat reduces the emission of hydro-chloric acid during burning of thecables. ®

FR (Flame Retardant) Red and

Orange Stripe cables

(FYRGARD )

are designedto reduce the spread of fire along acable tray or duct. However, whenthese cables burn, they give off largequantities of toxic gases and smoke.
