Summary

Tiffany Kimbro PubMed Low carbohydrate diets in family practice: what can we learn from an internet based support groupNutrition J. pp 5-26Feinman, R.Vernon, M.Westman, E. 2006

This article did a survey on The Active Low-Carber Forums website. The forum is an online support group for people who consider themselves following a low-carb diet. The survey found that most of the participants were females with an age range of 30-50 years old and wanting to lose 50-100 pounds. The survey was to determine how the diet related to family practices, how dieters actually ate and if the weight lost was kept off. The study found that most participants used there own variation of the Atkins diet and simply replaced starch and high sugar foods with non-starchy vegetables, without adding additional fat or protein. The survey found that most kept weight off for more than a year and while most physicians may have been skeptical at the beginning, become supportive with results.

Low Carb Diet May Slow Tumor GrowthConsumer Health, Brink, W

2012

These researchers tested rats with human carcinomas to see if the low carb diet would slow down the growth of a human tumor. After being tested, they found it to be true that the low carb diet would slow down the growth of a tumor. Mice fed with the foods lower in carb also exhibited lower glucose, insulin and lactate levels.

Consensus

• The low-carb diet is fairly adequate if the dieter planned well. However, carbohydrates are our main energy source. Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that carbohydrates make up 45 to 65 percent of your total daily calorie intake. So if carbohydrates are cut out completely or for a significant amount of time could give non-beneficial effects.

• A balanced diet is defined as a diet that contains adequate amounts of all the necessary nutrients required for healthy growth and activity. There is a lot of differentiation of how low a low carb diet can be, anywhere from 30-100grams. In general, a low carb diet is anything lower than the DRI minimum amount. The low-carb diet could be considered imbalanced, especially if the dieter does not plan well.

• The low carb diet focuses on replacing starchy and sugary foods with non-starchy vegetables, therefore making it a low calorie diet, as well.

• The low carb diet includes nutrient-dense foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean meats, and dairy products. This also allows your body to feel fuller quicker.

• This diet can include a lot of variety if the dieter is not a picky eater. The low carb diet includes various meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, dairy, and fats and oils. You have many options for meals.

• This diet is not expensive. Foods needed could be found at your local grocery. The low carb diet would probably cost as much as you are currently paying for groceries.

• Time management would be necessary for the low carb diet. It would not be a convenience grab-and-go type meal, preparation and planning is needed to stay on track.

• WebMD reports that there is not enough scientific evidence to back up whether the low-carb diet truly promotes long-term weight loss. http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20030408/jury-out-low-carb-diets
