Message from the Executive Headteacher

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Burnley High School,

As we approach the holidays, it is always a pleasure to take time to reflect on the term’s many successes.

This newsletter is full of exciting and interesting opportunities which our students have been offered and undertaken over the course of the last half term.

As always, it is a real pleasure working alongside our dedicated staff and watching our students flourish and develop under their guidance and I am enormously proud to be part of our wonderful school.

Over the coming term there will be opportunities for parents, carers and families to come in to BHS for a planned event and I really look forward to welcoming you to these.

SPOTLIGHT ON...ANGEL PENNINGTON

Whilst on holiday with her family, Angel entered a dance competition which, she not only choreographed herself, but also mixed the music for, too!

Angel won the heat and was entered into the Grand Final of ‘UK’s Got Talent.’ She then had the daunting task of competing against the finalists from all of the heats leading up to it.

Her determination, resilience and talent shone through in the final and we are incredibly proud to say that Angel won and has been crowned the ‘2018 Winner of UK’s Got Talent.’ What an amazing achievement!

GREAT BURNLEY BAKE OFF

At the end of September, the Year 11 Hospitality and Catering

students were challenged with creating a dessert that could be served in a Michelin-star restaurant.

They planned their dish for homework and had two hours to prepare, cook and present the dish which was judged by a number of Burnley High School staff (a difficult task, one would

assume!!)

The selection of dishes included: chocolate cake, cheesecake, lemon drizzle cake and crepes.

The judges were thoroughly impressed and commented on the hard work and presentation of each of the dishes.

The final decision was cast by the Head Judge, Mrs Walmsley and, by a unanimous decision, the winner was announced as Dougie Graham with his ‘Kinder Egg, Strawberry Coulis & Milky Bar Shavings Cheesecake’ which was quickly demolished by the staff!

LITERACY UPDATE

Literacy is still high on the agenda here at BHS and our form time reading programme is now in its second year and having a huge impact across the whole school, helping our students decode difficult words and access a higher challenge curriculum.

The English Department took over clubs & form time to celebrate Roald Dahl Day. Competitions ran throughout KS3 and the English Department had the tough task of choosing winners which were announced in assembly. Jack, Kella, Sophie, Alex, Tamzin, Alex were the worthy winners, well done!

Should you require any guidance or want any further information about our literacy initiatives please contact Mr Plowes, Head of English at school.

BERLIN TRIP

Some of our Years 9 and 10 had the amazing experience of visiting Berlin and Krakow over a week period, organised and planned by Mr. Bradley-Green. Pupils visited Sachsenhausen and Auschwitz concentrations camps and were incredibly moved by the experience which enabled contextualised insight into the curriculum they are studying at school currently. A visit to the site of Hitler's bunker and the memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe also posed lots of questions and deep-thinking from our students.

On the final day, students met a Holocaust survivor who retold her story of survival and students asked poignant questions in a very emotional question-and-answer session. As always, our pupils represented the school fantastically and showed great respect, and had an experience of a lifetime.

GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP

As part of their GCSE coursework, Year 11 embarked on a fieldtrip to enhance their studies in school. Their challenge was to measure the velocity and bedload of the River Don, a challenge which they rose to with great enthusiasm. Once the data needed had been acquired, they moved on to visit Burnley town centre to identify if urban regeneration has brought more social opportunities to Burnley, again linking directly to the GCSE content of their course.

Students carried out questionnaires, land use surveys and pedestrian counts and needed to interact with the general public in order to gather the information, giving invaluable real life experience of how this process would operate in the working world.

SPORTING SUCCESS!

35 students took part in a town-wide cross country event. Our students did us proud as always. Congratulations to Ruby Fort who came in second place in the girls race and Finley Harrison came third in the boys race.

We have had a great start to the netball season with newly formed Year 8 and Year 9 teams working really

hard on their skills. Both teams took part in a practice tournament last week and Year8 won two out of their

three games and Year 9 won one of their three games. Well done girls, keep up the hard work!
