Our Call to PrayerTo deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ, we are called to service – fol-lowing his example and command-ment to love others as we love our-selves. Last week we focused on our Call to Service and described some of the current opportunities for parish-ioners to get involved in various min-istries of our community. This week, we explore the Call to Prayer – our response to love God and the second aspect of our stewardship in faith.

Prayer as God’s Gift

In her autobiography, St. Therese of Lisieux describes our call to prayer as a surge of the heart. In this way, prayer is understood first as a gift from God, a way to respond to the gift of life that God has given us. Do we breathe? Our very breathing is a response to life as our lips form the name of God (YHWH) as we take each breath. St. Augustine suggests, “Whether we re-alize it or not, prayer is the encounter of God’s thirst with ours. God thirsts that we may thirst for him” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #2560).

Prayer as Covenant

God desires to be in relationship with us. Like all important relationship in our life, prayer allows us to com-municate the needs and desires that touch our heart to the One who loved

us from the beginning. The heart is the place of truth and encounter; it is the place of covenant and bond. Pope Francis writes, “Prayer touches the very depths of our flesh; it touches our heart. It is not God who changes; rather, it is we who change, through obedience and surrender in prayer” (Open Mind, Faithful Heart).

Prayer as Communion

If we are in relationship with God, then we are in relation-ship with all of God’s chil-dren – truly, all of creation. In this way, we never really pray alone – whether pri-vately or in public – because through Baptism, our prayer unites us with all living things in Christ. Our Call to Prayer is a call to community and to a responsibility for one an-other. Prayer opens us to the needs of others through the love of Christ (CCC #2565).

Praying as a Liturgical Minister One amazing way to deepen your prayer at Mass is by serving as a liturgi-cal minister. I’ve been helping in differ-ent ministries at Mass since I learned my Latin responses in 2nd grade! The opportunity of experiencing Mass as an altar server, lector, Eucharistic min-ister, musician and usher has been a great blessing in my life and has helped me to focus on God’s Word and the gift of the Holy Eucharist.

We are blessed with many parishioners who devote themselves to serving in li-turgical ministries each week. We have wonderful, dedicated ministers at ev-ery Mass. However, as our parish gen-erations change, we are in great need – especially of younger parishioners – to take their rightful place at one of our five weekend Masses. Will you prayer-fully consider how the Lord is calling you to prayer by serving in a liturgical ministry? You may not feel ready to be a lector or a Eucharistic minister. Then consider serving as an usher and help us extend safety and hospitality to our parishioners and visitors. This is a great gift for families to do together.

Our new Ministry Scheduling Pro-gram makes it very easy and conve-nient to set your non-available times, vacations, or to request a substitute when you are scheduled and plans change. Truly, a busy schedule need not be an obstacle to serving on a regular basis. Many current ministers travel for work and find the scheduling program very easy to use right from their phone or tablet.

NOW is the time to step up. We will be holding an information and train-ing session, Saturday, October 20, from 9:00 – 11:30 AM, in conjunction with our annual Liturgical Minister’s Retreat. You are invited to serve as a Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EM), Usher, Head Usher, Altar Server, or Mass Captain. In addition, we need people to assist with our liturgical art and environ-ment on a seasonal basis, or as a mem-ber our liturgy team.

WOCCR Invites You to a Healing Mass with Fr. Tim FurlowJesus, the Greatest Physician is the sub-ject of this Event. The Mass will be held Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 7:30 PM at St. Mary’s Cathedral, 1716 NW Davis St., Portland.

Fr. Furlow was born in 1982, went to the University of Steubenville from 2004 -2007. During those years he was part of the core team of their prayer group. Most recently, he was the Parochial Vicar at St Mary Cathe-dral and now the Administrator at St. Patrick’s in Portland.

All Saints Day Retreat Come and Join us Thursday, November 1 for the All Saints Day Retreat at Our Lady of Peace Retreat in Beaverton. Bishop Peter Smith will be our Retreat Master for the day.

Respect Life Sunday Focus on Faith to Feature Death Penalty OpponentOur Lady of the Lake is kicking off their Focus on Faith October lecture series with a talk on the death penalty by Becky O’Neil McBrayer. The event is set for Sunday, Octo-ber 7 from 10:20 AM -11:15 in the Parish Hall at Our Lady of the Lake, 790 A Avenue, Lake Oswego, OR 97034. All are welcome.

Becky lost both her mother and stepfather to murder 12 years ago in the Charbonneau area of Wilsonville. Her brother was ultimately accused and convicted of the crime, and is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Becky is now focused on rec-onciliation. She is a member of Murder Victims’ Families for Reconciliation and Oregonians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty.

The topic of the death penalty is particularly relevant as Pope Francis has declared the death penalty unacceptable in all cases and has changed the catechism to reflect this. He is committing the church to working with de-termination for abolition of the death penalty worldwide.

FDA Funding of Purchasing Aborted Fetal Tissue Research Last month, news reports revealed that the Food and Drug Administration signed a new contract to acquire “fresh” aborted fetal organs for research creat-ing so-called “humanized mice” with human immune systems.

Yesterday (9/11/18), the U.S. Bishops’ Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities joined 44 other pro-life groups in signing a letter to Secretary Alex Azar, head of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, expressing shock and dismay that the FDA is “using federal tax dollars and fomenting demand for human body parts taken from babies who are aborted.”

The letter points out that Advanced Bioscience Resources (ABR), “the company with which the FDA has its contract for procurement of aborted fetal organs, is among the entities referred for criminal investigation by both houses of Congress for potential collusion with abortion facilities as well as possibly profiting from the sale of fetal organs from aborted babies.”

The letter poses a number of questions to the Secretary about the contract with ABR and about other fetal tissue research being conducted by the National In-stitutes of Health.

Youth Ministry attendance has been steady at EDGE and we have been busy planning for Confirmation

and Life Teen. Thank you for those who have stepped forward to help with these ministries!

Serving our brothers and sisters living on the margins is the great privilege of Mercy Teams Street Ministry Van outreach.

Volunteers open their hearts and minds to offer comfort and support. We are there to listen, give voice to hope, and offer encouragement to those facing the very difficult chal-lenges of life on the streets. The stories of how our guests got there and the difficulties of getting off the street, are gut-wrenching to be sure. It’s not easy for them. However, by acknowledging their challenges, caring, and expressing our love, we can be the hands and feet of Jesus as we reinforce the message of hope and love through Jesus Christ.

Thanks to the 15 Mercy Teams volunteers that started at 7:00 AM on Saturday, September 22, to prepare the hot breakfast and sort a large amount of donated clothing for the event. We served over 75 meals, handed out a large amount of clothing. On Thursday September 20, 8 volunteers joined in to make the sack lunches we distributed on Saturday.

Love INC – Lace Up With Love - Thursday October 25 or Saturday October 27 - Children’s Shoe Distribution – School shoes for children identified as living on the margins. Shoes handed out between 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Join a small group at Our Lady of the Lake Parish Hall to help kids try on shoes and find their size. All shoes provided by Love INC.

Oregon Food Bank – November 3 at Beaverton Repack Room – Mercy Teams has reserved 35 slots for the Oregon Food Bank. The shift is 1:00 to 3:30 PM. Families and kids age 6 and up are welcome.

Mercy Teams Parish Wide Outreach for our own Parish-ioners in need. If you have the time to assist Parishioners in our parish that need assistance, we are attempting to match your ability with the needs in our parish. Add you name to the list of the willing and able and we will be starting proj-ects very soon.
