CAMERAWORK

This medium long shot shows the farmer in the fields. The shot demonstrates that the location is isolated and that no one is around to help. The fact that the audience thinks the farmer is a villain at this point creates tension for the audience because they think the woman is in danger and has been killed. This effect makes the scene seem more horrific as the woman had no one to help her. The man being positioned at the left side of the screen emphasises the seclusion of where the woman and farmer were. Additionally, at this point in the film, the audience think that the farmer is the villain so the audience are wondering all sorts of questions like what the farmer is going to do about the woman. This emphasises the tension and further makes the audience feel anxious about what he plans on doing.

CAMERAWORK

This scene uses a hand-held camera effect when the farmer was running away from the woman towards the car. This effect used extends the tension of the audience and creates a sense of urgency as the camera is trying to keep up with the farmer. This indicates that the farmer is running to or away something and makes the audience feel more intrigued as don’t know what the farmer is running and what he plans on doing.

MISE EN SCENE

One element of mise en scene used in the film is the clothing the farmer was wearing. He is wearing a white vest underneath a dungaree and a cap on his head. His clothes are also dirty indicating that he has been doing some outdoor work. The clothing the farmer is wearing is a stereotypical outfit of what farmers wear and helps the audience interpret the character and the location of the film. Also a stereotype of farmers is that they can be mysterious characters, so the outfit of the farmer helps create a mysterious effect to the film.

MISE EN SCENE

Another element of mise en scene used in Love Field is the tattoos the farmer has on his arm. This makes the farmer seem more dangerous and more of a villain due to the tattoos being in the form of a skull. This makes the audience think that he is antagonist and makes the audience presume that he is capable of killing the woman.

EDITING

This screenshot shows the farmer running away. The pace of the scene speeds up as the farmer is running away, preferably to create tension and to make the audience feel engaged in the scene. It also makes the audience feel anxious as they are not sure what the farmer is running away from and what he plans on doing. The fact that this scene was shot from behind as well as in front, along with the fast pace, makes the scene seem more tense and makes the audience feel agitated as they are unaware of what the farmer is running away from and whether something is coming after him or not.

EDITING

This scene of the farmer with the woman and baby uses a soft focus to emphasise the sentimental value of the baby and to create a sense of relief of tension as the woman isn't dead and the farmer isn’t a psychotic killer. This scene also creates relief because it makes the audience realise that they were wrong to think the farmer was a killer. This soft focus effect demonstrates the farmer’s and the woman’s happiness and shows the importance of this scene to the characters and the audience. Furthermore, this message of this short film is probably most prominent when this scene takes place because it shows that you shouldn’t judge people based on their appearance and that not everything is as it appears.

SOUND

The on-screen and off-screen diegetic sound of this crow plays an important role in this film because it resembles a classic horror effect. Crows tend to represent death as they are birds that, in horror films, tend to eat parts of dead bodies, therefore the audience can associate the crow with the thought that the woman was dead and the farmer had murdered her. Additionally, the crows caw has an effect on the tension that builds up during the film because when the farmer is running away towards the car, the crow’s caw becomes more prominent and it caws more frequently. This makes the audience feel more agitated as they don’t know what is happening.

SETTING/LOCATION

In the film Love Field, there are many long shots of the location or setting of the film. The setting of the film is an isolated piece of land with acres of fields all around. These shots play an important part in the film because they emphasise the seclusion of the area where the woman and farmer are. this helps the audience understand that there is nowhere for the woman to run away or get help. This makes the scene seem more scary as there is nowhere to run to or anywhere to get away from this location.

PROPS

The phone is an important prop used in the film because it is left on the floor in the fields with blood around it. This instantly makes the audience think that someone is hurt and needs helps, which creates an effect that makes the audience want to watch more. The fact that there is blood everywhere and that the phone is left on the floor open, indicates that someone needed help and that due to the location or danger that was taking place, the person could not reach any help. This makes the audience anxious as they don’t know what happened or if the danger is still around.
