Cannes isn’t the only fashion forward film festival around, the beautiful city of Venice hosts its own prestigious extravaganza with gorgeous gowns rivaling those at Cannes. Let’s take a look at the best dresses at the 2011 Venice Film Festival.

1. Jessica Chastain in Elie Saab: Jessica Chastain made her red carpet debut at Cannes and since then, has been on everyone’s fashion radar since. The redhead beauty makes spectacular choices, this time was no different. At the premiere of “Wild Sloane”, Jessica shimmers on the red carpet in a Fall 2011 couture Elie Saab gown. The nude gown deliciously contrasts her red hair and lips. The cap-sleeved gown has an exquisite lace overlay with embroidered details and has perfect movement. Elie Saab continues to be the maestro when it comes to breath-taking red carpet gowns.

2. Marisa Tomei in Preen: Photo call looks at Venice have been on par with red carpet premiere looks. Marisa Tomei impresses in this Fall 2011 Preen dress. The crystal encrusted black top and the bright orange skirt make a perfect, chic combination. This look is perfection, head to toe. Marisa proves that you don’t need to be in a gown to leave a memorable impression.

3. Diane Kruger in Elie Saab: Diane Kruger is the fashion world’s darling, and she never disappoints. Sticking to red carpet favourite Elie Saab, Diane dons a dazzling gown from the Fall 2011 collection with a sequined underlay and embellished bodice. Beige and nude continue to be preferred colors for many events, it’s interesting that the trend hasn’t fallen flat yet. Flawless hair and makeup complete this look. She looks like a goddess.

4. Abbie Cornish in Versace: If there’s one collection that can give Elie Saab a run for his money, it’s Versace Atelier Spring 2011. Australian actress Abbie Cornish stuns in this strapless ombre gown from the collection. The dress has a fabulous bustier bodice and silk organza petals which effortlessly go from black to deep purple. Dramatic, dark and absolutely beautiful. Sideswept hair could have been swapped for an updo, but I don’t think anyone is looking past the dress.

5. Vivian Hsu in Dior: Taiwanese actress Vivian Hsu stepped things up a notch for her photocall in a vintage Christian Dior look. She looks utterly perfect in this pale pink Spring 2008 dress with embellished shoulders and a giant bow at the waist. The sleek hair and pink lips compliment the dress to a tee. This was a great, stand-out choice in a sea of Fall 2011 looks.


The past week in my life has revolved around one thing and one thing only. I can’t even begin to explain the sense of relief from the

fact that it is finally over as I write this article. The Lux Style Awards would never be complete without their fair share of drama, controversy, mishaps, bloopers, and tragedies.

It all started with my wife giving me the impossible task of designing her red carpet dress. Now I know most of you are thinking of what an honour it must be to have La Haq wear your creation for such an important event. But what no one realizes is that when you have a designer for a husband, you very conveniently dissolve the line that separates him from your own personal darzi. In fact, I think all the darzis sitting on the floor, Singer machines in every society auntie’s basement, stitching countless lawn joras, and putting up with a daily dose of the signature aunty abuse have a better level of job satisfaction compared to me when it comes to designing something for the Mrs.

I was handed over a sketch and 15 yards of fabric a week before we traveled to Karachi for the awards. Since the Dengue scare in Lahore, half of my karkhana has fallen sick and are all on bed rest. In spite of our constant spraying and being careful of standing water, there is a huge amount of our workforce that has been out of commission for more than a week now. To add to our bad luck, my wife also managed to catch malaria and was in bed until we actually had to drive to the

airport for our Karachi flight, which meant no fittings of this illustrious dress that I was trying to produce for her. No fittings at the studio meant delays in alterations, as I would have to drag the unfinished piece to her bed only to see her nauseous expression while I tried to believe that it wasn’t the dress that was causing it. With my assistant designer also falling sick at the last moment, I had to spend the whole night at the karkhana working on the dress and by the time we finished at 8 am in the m o r n i n g , I had just enough time to run home, pack and barely make it to my 11 am flight to Karachi. It was no surprise that I got off the plane in Karachi with a fever of 102.

obviously being when Kamiar Rokni introduced me to my wife to be in LSA 2003. As we went through the montage showing the best of all the LSAs over the past 10 years, one couldn’t help but miss the energy that surrounded our industry when we all went to Malaysia for the awards. It seemed like a different era all together even though it was only four years ago. I felt very sad realizing how much Pakistan has changed since 2007 and how much the arts have been affected. An unstable atmosphere in the country translates into fewer sponsors and fewer events. It is precisely for this reason that continuing to have an event such as Lux Style Awards or even the PFDC Fashion Week in today’s Pakistan is an achievement on its own.

With my partner in crime, HSY dancing with Reema to the grooves of her movie’s new single, the show kicked off with energy. Yours truly also had a cameo in the item number but it did not involve any kind of shaking or thrusting

of body parts. I was told that it is left only to the true professionals who know

how to do it well. That said, Sheroo really did bring the curtain down as the crowd cheered him on. As the awards continued, so did the sounds of silence. There were more than our fair share of

surprises but this is definitely not the forum to discuss “should’ve, would’ve,

could’ve”. Attending these awards for so many years has taught me one thing well, which is to see them for what they really are. It is an annual event where our peers from the 3 industries (fashion,

film, music) get together to celebrate each other’s achievements. In these harsh times, any event that supports and promotes the arts in our country needs to be supported and celebrated by us. Furthermore, the ceremony is about the publicity and the press coverage each celebrity manages to generate out of the whole experience which is the actual thing that translates into more work in our perspective careers. Take it from me; if you concentrate too much on the winning and losing, you might

not even be nominated or invited a few years later.

Lux Style Awards honoured the winners of various categories in fashion, music and television industry, last week. The highly anticipated event

of the year was held in Karachi featuring some memorable performances and glimpses of the most stylish personalities.

Kicking off with music category, the award for the best singer went to guitarist, composer and music producer Shallum and Zara Madani for the song ‘Payam’. Director Bilal Lashari for the best music video ‘Shor Macha,’ Best Artist (Rock Band) ‘Mauj’ and the Best Music producer

category went to the obvious choice Rohail Hayatt for Coke Studio season 3.

Winning the best TV Actress Award for the hugely popular serial ‘Dolly ki Ayegi Baarat’ Bushra Ansari was genuinely excited. ‘Though this is my 3rd Lux Style Award but every time it feels good to have the trophy in my hand, I am blessed to have been honoured and grateful to the people who appreciate my work,’ said a beaming Bushra Ansari. Iqbal Ansari has won the award for the best producer for TV Serial for Geo network ‘Bol meri machhli.’ This is the second time that the husband/wife team has won the award together and the last time was way back in 1986 for PTV Awards when both held trophies. ‘The main motivation and the drive to excel for the couple is the competition in their respective fields,’ Bushra acknowledges.

In the fashion category, models of the year went to Rabia Butt and Iffi Zafar. Rizwan-ul Haq won the best fashion photographer. The winner for best hair and makeup artist has been the creative team at Nabila. In Fashion

Design (Prêt) has been won by Khaddi Khaas, (best retail brand is also Khaddi)

and in Fashion Design (Luxury Prêt) Shamaael Ansari stood victorious.

Shamaeel commends the platform that is encouraging the young people in putting their best foot forward. ‘Any one promoting fashion is very close to my heart, I felt thrilled after winning this award because I had taken a break from fashion for seven years when I was at the peak and came back this year with the resolve to reach to that level where I had left off, so this has been truly special for me,’ says Shamaael.

For the simple goal of recognizing the talents of artists; the Lux Style Awards have come a long way since its inception. There have been disappointments and hiccups, but we must always remember that it gives us a platform to honour our local talent. The nominees were been chosen for their well-deserved contribution in their respective fields and every one is

Fashion stylist Khawar Riaz is one of the pioneers in our fashion industry. He is responsible for introducing and polishing many top class Fashion models. When it comes to fashion photography especially men, nobody can beat his talent and convincing style. Lounge recently caught up with him.

Q. How long have you been in this field and how did you start your career?A. I have been in this field since 1994. People know me as a stylist, photographer and make up artist but these days I am dabbling into interior design. I want to explore different sides of my personality. I was always more into graphics and that’s why I have now jumped into interior design.

Q. Tell us about your current projects?A. I am a very versatile person because I like frequent changes rather than being stuck with the same philosophies. I am

inspired by the environment because the people around me and the people behind the scene inspire me a lot. Other than that, as a host I am starting a show called the ‘Khawar Riaz Show’ on APlus Channel. This show will express the brighter, lighter and witty side of my personality. I have invited all those people in my show that I have worked with or who have been an integral part of my life. My show will be a learning process for people and a lesson can be taken from it. I am also planning to start a show for kids and I will come up with its details soon.

Q. Recently, you wrote an open letter to the media and a journalist

Amna Haider Isani. What is the story behind it? A. Amna Haider works for Dawn and she recently wrote a letter to the Lux Style Awards. In her letter, Amna Haider Isani attacked Ather Shahzad and me by saying that all our work is the result of Photoshop. She further said that people like me and Shahzad Raza should retire! Many new entrants are joining the field and they should get a chance. My letter was an answer to her biased criticism based on her personal opinion.

Q. How do you take competition in the industry?A. I think that competition is necessary

and it provides the potential to bring out the best in you. I take competition as positive and it’s very healthy for our industry. I am not stagnant at all and don’t want to repeat one particular kind of style. Instead of that I always try to create a new person every time.

Q. Who are your favourite models?A. All those people whom I have transformed are my favourite. You can see in the industry that there are various people who made their place in the industry just because I transformed their personalities.

Q. How was your experience while working with Pakistan Fashion Week?A. It was a great experience. I was the stylist and makeup artist for the male models. The problem is that you can’t show male models with a variety. It was a challenge for me because when you style female models you can style them with lots and lots of colours and you can do different types of hair styling but when it comes to male models you don’t have that many options. I decided to focus on change and decorated the male

models in an attractive way which people appreciated.

Q. Do you like working with upcoming designers and models?A. Yes, I prefer working with them because they are fresh and they have very innovative ideas.Q. Any message for upcoming makeup artists/stylists and photographers?A. Yes, I appreciate them a lot and fashion industry will flourish if new people will

join. The only thing I want to say is that they should not come into this field just for the sake of glamour; it is a lot of hard work and they have to be competitive. Just listen to your heart and do what suits you best and makes you happy.

The turn-offSitting in my office, this is something I hear all the time,

‘Doctor, my wife has become too fat, can you help her’; or ‘My Husband has got such an awful potbelly, I am so turned off’. After over 1500 successful liposuction procedures, it would be safe to say that I have heard it all and much worse sometimes. So when and how did liposuction become the alternative for weight management and does it really work.

The word liposuction means fat removal. It is the cosmetic surgical technique to remove unwanted fat from any part of the body permanently and never to plague you again.

Back in the day liposuction was performed in a hospital setting under general anesthesia, carrying many risks, such as thromboembolism (clot formation), or excessive bleeding during surgery, visceral injury etc. Also there were many complications associated with the procedure; dimpling, uneven surface, infections and even death. Unfortunately this old technique is still being performed mainly by many local plastic and general surgeons, and is considered outdated, and not to mention unsafe in the present times.

In 1984, Dr Jeffery Kliren invented a new technique known as ‘Tumescent Liposuction’. The advantage of this procedure is that it can be performed under local anesthesia. Tumescent liposuction is now considered the gold standard technique for performing liposuction because of its minimal risks and complications profile. There is no bleeding, no bumpiness provided it is performed by someone who has experience and has been properly trained to perform it.

In Pakistan liposuction was considered to be a potentially fatal procedure, due to serious side effects and deaths, mainly because the procedure was being done by surgeons who had not been trained in this field. In 2001, this situation proved to be a great opportunity for me to introduce for the very first time Tumescent Liposuction in Pakistan, as a risk free alternative for fat removal.

I had to face a great difficulty in making people understand the benefits of this new technique and also the difference between the old and new procedure. Unfortunately a lot of patients could not understand the benefits of Tumescent Liposuction.

But in the last 11 yrs of practice I have seen more a w a r e n e s s about the procedure, and a change in the mindset of people regarding this technique.

Making this procedure successful was a daunting and challenging task. The precision, accuracy, finesse and artistic touch I applied to each of the patients during this time was unimaginable. I have been able to establish this field slowly and gradually, despite all the challenges.

Now as the tumescent liposuction procedure is becoming more popular, other clinics have started to offer liposuction surgery, without any training, often resulting is disastrous outcomes. Never take the risk of getting a procedure done from an un-skilled, un-trained surgeon just because it will save you some money. The human body is sacred and should be respected; it should be handled with a lot of care because once the body gets disfigured it is very difficult to restore it to its natural appearance.

Expertise, experience and the quality of work a surgeon does, matters the most, not the cost!

make sure you keep your face clean at all times, stop using any cosmetic products that you feel you are allergic to and limit sun exposure, alcohol and cigarettes. In addition, try out the following home remedies to reduce and ultimately eliminate wrinkles and achieve that smooth texture that we are all so fond of. Make a paste of turmeric and sugarcane juice. Apply this liquid on your wrinkled skin regularly and you should be able to see the difference in two weeks. Turmeric is a guaranteed cure for wrinkles.Shred some cucumbers and strain the mixture through a sieve. Apply this residue on your face for about half an hour and then wash it off with cold water. Within days, you will notice a marked difference.The small miracle, lemon, is also extremely useful in reducing fine lines under the eyes, on the neck and on the hands. Just squeeze a lemon and apply it gently over your face with a cotton ball. Add some rosewater for sensitive skin and do it thrice a week to avail full results. Gently massage coconut oil on portions of skin prone to wrinkles every night at bedtime. Coconut oil mixed with a few drops of Vitamin E oil is one of the best deep wrinkle creams and often produces visible results within a week of using them. Alternatively, empty the contents of 3 Vitamin E capsules into a small bowl. Add to this 2 tsp plain yogurt, 1/2 tsp honey and 1/2 tsp lemon juice. Apply this mixture on the face using a cotton ball. Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse. This is one of the simplest natural anti wrinkle face creams and is an especially effective anti wrinkle treatment for men. Apply egg whites to the skin under your eyes. Egg whites contain several vitamins that help to nourish as well as tighten your skin. This is an excellent method to reduce wrinkles naturally and so in addition to applying it under your eyes, you can apply it to your forehead and other areas of your skin that are prone to wrinkling. Finally, use natural moisturizing creams and lotions regularly. Light massage with cream or lotion every night can keep your skin soft and supple.

Amidst the entire dazzle and the lure of the ‘American Dream’, one tends to forget their murky past. ‘The Help’ takes us back to the 60s when the shroud of racial prejudice and discrimination still masked the American way of life – I’m

acquiescing to the claims it’s not there anymore. While the movie is a reminder of Uncle Sam’s discomforting past, presenting such a sensitive – but severely beaten about the bush matter – in an engrossing manner was always going to be a tough task. The film is an adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s novel which tells the story of Skeeter (Emma Stone), an aspiring writer who wants to depict the lives African-American maids who, despite being a reservoir of love and care for the children of various families, are still being treated as ‘lesser mortals’.Skeeter’s actions are treated by an uproar of disapproval in Mississippi, as she quests to pen the stories of various women who come up to her – breaking the chains of orthodox conventions. As a result of this sharing of personal tales, a bond forms between Skeeter, Aibileen (Viola Davis) and Minny (Octavia Spencer), and the film illustrates this affectionate sisterhood with warmth and passion. Both Aibileen and Minny are maids. The former has spent her lifetime as a nanny, raising young girls with all the affection in the world. Minny is fired by a local social leader, only to be hired by a white trailer park trash like blonde. The characterization is impeccable and the acting is the undisputed forte of the movie. Viola Davis puts in an

enthralling performance as the watchful Aibileen and Octavia Spencer quite often seen playing comic roles admirably, justify each dimension of the multi-layered Minny. Although the focus on Emma Stone is less as compared to the actresses playing maids, she does her job with notable efficiency. However, scores of uncalled side issues – like a needless romantic sub-plot thrown in to the mix, causes the plot of the film to brim over and hence it took the complete 137 minutes to mould it all together. Focusing on the subject in question, customary though it was, would have shortened the length of the film considerably and leaving a more patent impact. Those expecting an eye-opener or an arousing revelation of the hidden mechanisms of the social setup will be letdown. This picture can be thought-provoking for those who have just returned back home after a 40 year long vacation in Mars, or those who have recently discovered the mind-boggling phenomenon that is the movie theater. The story is indiscreetly familiar and deals with a repeatedly acknowledged social issue. It’s about the courage needed to stand up to peer-pressure and fight against the skewed social order – defying all odds. All of this has been filmed umpteen times and such social awareness campaigns have been protruding from media portrayals for decades now – so basically it brings nothing new to the table. Nonetheless, the camaraderie and emotions shown in the film in severely antagonistic times is worth acknowledging. Go for it for the sheer acting talent on show. We could very well have an Oscar Nominee for the Best Actress from within its ranks.

Method:Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Prepare brownie mix according to the directions on the package. Spread into prepared baking pan. In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese, butter and cornstarch until fluffy. Gradually beat in sweetened condensed milk, egg and vanilla until smooth. Pour cream cheese mixture evenly over brownie batter. Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until top is lightly browned. Allow to cool, spread with frosting, and cut into bars. Store covered in refrigerator, or freeze in a single layer for up to 2 weeks.

Method:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch pan. In a large bowl, cream together shortening, brown sugar, and 1/2 cup white sugar. Beat in the 3 eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt; blend into the sugar mixture. Stir in chocolate chips, and set aside. In a separate bowl, mix together the cream cheese and 1/4 cup white sugar. Mix in the 2 remaining eggs.Spread 1/2 of chocolate chip dough in bottom of the prepared pan. Pour cream cheese batter on top of dough. Sprinkle with pecans. Drop pieces of the remaining chocolate chip batter over filling. Don’t worry if there are gaps; the batter will spread. Bake for 45 minutes in preheated oven, or until lightly browned on the top. Let the brownies cool in the pan before cutting into bars.
